Gamers 'overcharged' for modern DLC, says Witcher dev

CD Projekt Red game director says add-on content should be seen as a free "post-sale service."

CD Projekt Red game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz claims gamers are being "overcharged for what they receive" from modern downloadable content. Speaking to VG247, the Witcher developer said DLC today does not offer as much content as it did in the past.

"If today's DLCs offered the same amount of content they would be worth paying for, but in most cases players think they are overcharged for what they receive," Tomaszkiewicz said. "That’s why we offer expansions to our game for free. This is also a way of saying 'thank you' to the people who decided to buy our game instead of copying it from an unauthorized source."

Elsewhere in the interview, Tomaszkiewicz explained that CD Projekt Red has "always believed in free DLC" and that DLC should be seen as a "normal post-sale service that shouldn't be priced."

"Back when retail games were dominant, we had expansion packs," he continued. "These were really large chunks of content, which were worth their price."

Tomaszkiewicz's comments follow a statement from CD Projekt Red co-founder and joint CEO Marcin Iwinski, who said last month that the current industry trend is to "overexploit" gamers. He suggested publishers will lose business if they continue to charge for DLC and can actually stand to benefit from offering such add-ons for free.

They all say the same till they get popular. Then they turn greedy and try to milk us all. Case in point: EA-DICE battlefield statements.

I miss when DLC would release at a price, and then a month later it would be free. You could play those new maps on Halo for 5 dollars, OR you could just wait until February.

It pains me to see that devs like CD Projekt Red are merely exceptions in the gaming industry rather than the standard. Someone should give this guy a medal.

one game that i was interested in buying was Sleeping Dogs, until one producer (i think) said that they'll make DLC's until the end of this year... no more interest...

@Gusz2 That just means you should wait until next year when you can get the game and all of the DLC for $20.

Why can't we have more Bro-tier Developers like CDPR anymore? This is how you do DLC: Free.

Civilization, Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls, and even the Sims to some degree show what real DLC is. It's not just a costume or a weapon, it's an entirely new experience to the game. That's what we need and want for DLC: a reason to pick up a game that we beat months ago again.

@DrHyde Red Dead Redemption and Infamous 2... real worthy DLC...

I am not at all surprised that this is coming from the world's BEST RPG developer at the moment - CD Projeckt. Witcher 2 is the BEST when it comes to a mature and fulfilling RPG game. I never believed in the concept of DLCs unless they brought something unique and new to the base game. Honestly, a lot of the DLCs today are cheap pot shots. I hope somebody is paying attention, Bioware and Bethesda *cough cough*.

Preach it, sister! Till this day I have not bought one piece of DLC for any game because it's a scam. If a certain demographic of gamers are too stupid to realize this fact, then they deserve to drive this industry into the ground where you have to pay for each LEVEL in a game to continue. So enjoy where the industry is going, those who support this BS.

@Kravyn81 Im with you there! unfortunately people are actually really too stupid to realize its a scam and will go to defend these practices when its attacked or questioned.this is also known as "fanboyism"

we definitly need mroe devs like this one, Capcom, making us pay for several on-disc characters ,day one DLC, and devs not finishing a game because they can simply put the rest of it on DLC for extra money... DLC should be things made after the game is done, to keep the hype for the game a a certain treshold, not a mean to make more money...

Devs are the ones ruining the gaming industry not used games, used games are games they have already been paid for... the car industry isn't ruined by the used car market... yet more people buy used cars then people buy used games... greedy people are the worst

^^We need more Developers who think like this, because MOST Developers have already Brained Washed the masses into thinking they're hurting from Used games. When infact those developers are what's hurting Gamers and Gaming in general.

I just remembered that a few months ago this guy on facebook was defending Mass Effect 3's day 1 DLC because as he put it "games are too expensive to make.  Publishers need to make back the money they spent on making the game and you don't need to play from ashes to understand the game"  When I told him that its unethical for a publisher to to take content out of a game to charge us extra, especially day 1 on disc dlc, and that it EA wants to make their money back in costs they should focus on making a quality game he didn't understand and just kept defending the day 1 dlc.  I just love how he said DLC is needed to basically break even but CDPR has never charged for DLC and is nowhere near the size or man power of EA but are doing just fine lol.

The last sentence is very true on my case. I stop buying any game that have DLC for quite sometimes. Stop supporting abused business practice, micro transaction (DLC in particular), and those publisher would stop conducting it. I believe this outrage will stop in soon future (I'm talking about a few years ahead when much more consumers become wiser).

There was an editorial here on GS not that long ago talking about how the key problem is that publishers won't choose between whether DLC is created to combat piracy or to generate additional revenue.  So they choose both and try to milk their consumer base to death.  We can see through that and so it ticks us off.

CD Project has the wisdom to have at least made a clear choice.  They sell fancy special editions of the retail product to generate extra revenue from their biggest fans.  Fair enough.  Then they release free patches and free DLC to reward people who bought the product new rather than used or pirated.  And we as consumers see both of these as fair dealing.

I can only hope they continue to be successful and their views pay off so that the bigger fish take notice and curb some of their most abusive practices.  Long live CDPR!

@jimrhurst The only way EA, Actvision, Capcom, etc will ever change and adopt this model is if by some miracle the CEO's of those publishers get fired and by some chance an employee of CDPR or Valve takes their spot.

jimrhurst

@toddx77 CEOs don't last forever, and neither do whole companies.  And those same CEOs are perfectly willing to change their tune overnight if they think that way lies profits.  If gamers ever get sick enough of this crap then the profits won't be there for ridiculous DLC schemes.  Remember that at one time everyone bought their PCs at radio shack and best buy.  We used to rent movies at these local stores in our towns.  Now almost nobody does those things anymore.  Because newer business models supplanted the old.  DLC wasn't even a thing a few years ago.  It was still retail expansion disks.  Subscription-based MMOs?  Going the way of the Dodo.  Cheap licensed video games for kids?  Killed by flash and iOS games.

The minute CDPR's method looks more lucrative than the DLC milk machine then these companies will turn on a dime.  Or just fade into irrelevance like THQ.

@jimrhurst if your waiting for someone like EA to change? yea , i think id first see fish start walking out of the water on dry land and integrating into human society first then EA actually change their mind , EA would start thinking they dont charge enough first.

Now i know the world is coming to an end. Theres a developer out there who actually thinks about the customers/gamers. Please never change ur attitude towards DLC.

I can understand companies charging for DLC because there are idiots out there who will pay for all kinds of rubbish and as long as there are idiots there will be companies to exploit them.

I think the advent of MSP (microsoft points) makes things worse. Once someone gets MSP they dont see it as money as much so they dont mind spending it on any old junk.

DLC for free is definitely the way to go. Gamers can be a very loyal bunch and if a company is in the good graces of the gamers then they will be supported better. I dont know about everyone else but if a company looks after its customers then id be more inclined to buy their games new and even pre-order more games because i know i'd be getting the full experience and not be charged for little extras that should have either been in the game in the first place or added as free updates.

The only time i feel DLC is worth money is in cases like the GTA IV DLC but i think of them more as expansions. TLaD and BoGT were like whole new games that offered a lot of new content and experience but were also tied to the original game and enhance that also. This is what true chargeable DLC should be like, not just a few maps or a couple of hours of extra gameplay  or some pretty weapons and costumes but propper full on expansions that give many hours more gameplay and content, otherwise they should be free.

Until DLC goes down this rout I will continue to rent games and buy preowned at cheaper prices unless its something awesome like sleeping dogs is looking

I do like this idea...I have never minded paying for DLC when I felt like I got what I was paying for. There have been times I feel I've been significantly gipped. I know some business models *ahem* EA *cough* seem to call to charge for everything. I know the business has to grow, and companies have to make money--but it's nice when a company shows us that they appreciate our business and the fact that we keep them going.
