GameStop: Sandy 'had no impact' on Assassin's Creed III launch

President Tony Bartel says megastorm's wrath only minimally affected sales, despite hundreds of stores being closed entirely for more than a day; six shops remain closed.
Hurricane Sandy slammed the United States' East Coast the week that Assassin's Creed III launched in late October, knocking "hundreds" of GameStop stores out of power. However, this, as well as GameStop's cancellation of all midnight launch events in the region, did not hurt initial launch sales, the company said today.
"Clearly, having a major storm hit on the launch date of one of your largest titles is not what we would have predicted," GameStop president Tony Bartel said today in a postearnings financial call. "However, we had heroic efforts on the parts of our associates."
Bartel added that GameStop was able to open some stores again the very next morning, and in some cases before its competitors. As a result, GameStop was able to "minimize the loss significantly," and in fact, the game broke initial launch sales records at the retailer, he said.
The executive added that the majority of GameStop locations in the affected areas were brought back online within two days. Currently, just six GameStop establishments remain closed.
"To a certain extent, we really mitigated what could have been a very disastrous event. And it really had no impact on our sales," Bartel said.
First-week sales of Assassin's Creed III hit 3.5 million, rising 100 percent over comparable sales of Assassin's Creed: Revelations in 2011.

Yeah what the hell, It just says a video game selling was good even during a disaster. Why would a GAME WEBSITE put that kind of news?! They should say about how much lives affected by the storm and the casualities right?

This article also doesn't have any relevance because I am pretty sure ACIII would have sold a shit ton with or without the disaster. It's always a slow newsday with this guy on your team.
But you know he doesn't care that we are completely right. Otherwise he may come with much better material.
Oh thank god. Whew. I almost cried at the thought of sales being affected cuz you know, that's more important right now guys. C'mon, what would you rather do? Swim in your millions or create temporary shelters for those w/ no heat, no house, w/ kids and hardly any food and donate some of those millions. I'm not knocking you for choosing the former.

Actually, *I* decided not to buy it knowing there would be no instruction manual for me to use as kindling in the fire I needed for warmth, so you lost at least ONE sale, Ubisoft!

1 Like I don't see what all the fuss is about. Everyone usually suffers financially from such an event, and businesses are no exception. If anything, it's good news that people were unaffected enough to be able to buy the game. :P
Right, phew, dodged a bullet there, with all the devastation and struggles Sandy caused it's good to know a super rich company was able to get even richer. Keep focusing on the important stuff GS.
aww man that was heartwarming in the middle of a storm gamestop were able to sell while people were able to buy. knowing gamestop i know they use the money to get all the people effected by the storm the help they needed.

No worries. Another big name Blockbuster that is made for profits hasn't seen any hits to their sales.
1 Like I know a gamer is a gamer, and a gamer will seek comfort from a game in a time of despair.... but I find this impossible to believe.
With Hurricane Sandy, just as with Hurricane Katrina and any other significantly damaging storm, it would HAVE to affect ALL sales of ALL sorts, which of course includes gaming. How could it not?

Oh thank God! Thousands upon thousands of individuals found themselves without power, thousands more faced property damage and homes being destroyed, and loved ones all over the country were sent into panic wondering about the fate of relatives on the East Coast for days. But fortunately, this event wasn't "disastrous" enough to ruin sales of a high-profile video game at a national retail chain!
I'm so glad GameStop has such a sensitive CEO who would do nothing to belittle a tragic event!
Agreed. Though I suspect sales were, at the very least, somewhat adversely affected in New Jersey during the widespread power outages.
6 Like oh thx you jesus! i thought sandy would effect AC3 sales, but thx god thats not the case. i mean sure there are thousands of ppl left without a home, but they'll be fine AC3 was the only thing really in any danger. and im glad its save
6 Like @Benifited Don't forget that it was thanks to the heroic efforts of their associates. Forget fire fighters, first responders and the national guard. The GS associates are the real heroes of Sandy.
