First things first, GameTap is nothing like Steam. With GameTap you pay a single fee to play every game in their library, while you could play many without that fee. With Steam you pay a fee per game, usually games you could purchase at retail for the same price anyway. Gametap is a great idea, but fairly poor execution. They have too many useless titles. However, they are adding Supreme Commander into their library so that makes it pretty much all worth it. I just hope they keep their price point, and don't go the high monthly fee way.
GameTap merging with European counterpart
Turner Broadcasting to transfer control of PC downloadable-game service to Paris-based Metaboli by early next year.
Back in August, Turner Broadcasting Systems made clear that it was looking to unload its GameTap PC-based subscription-gaming service in short order. The media giant said that it was "considering various strategic options," one of which has now won out.
GameTap announced today that it is "partnering" with European PC-based downloadable-game service Metaboli in an agreement that will see Turner relinquish management duties of the site early next year. After the transition is completed, Turner will become an equity investor in the merged Metaboli-GameTap business.
According to a FAQ posted by a GameTap staffer on the service's official forums, the merger won't impact subscribers' rates or access to games. Current users won't be able to access Metaboli's library of games right away, but the companies are working on new subscription options and other changes to the service that will be announced "in the near future."
GameTap currently touts a selection of more than 1,000 retro console, arcade, and PC games. The service also plays home to a number of high-profile original episodic-gaming series, including Telltales Games' Sam & Max franchise and American McGee's Grimm.
