GTAIII: Anniversary Edition goes mobile December 15

By Jonathan Downin

Rockstar readying updated release of PS2 open-world crime game for Android and iOS platforms; $5 price point confirmed.

The PlayStation 2's seminal Grand Theft Auto III turned 10 years old in October, and developer Rockstar celebrated the anniversary by confirming it would be bringing the open-world crime game to mobile platforms. Rockstar followed that up today with more specific details, confirming that Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition will be coming to Android and iOS on December 15 for $5.

The mobile port of GTAIII isn't the only Rockstar recognition of the game's anniversary. The company is also peddling a $150 limited-edition Claude action figure: a 1:6 scale articulated dress-up replica of the game's protagonist, complete with Liberty City prison jumpsuit and classic ensemble (cargo pants and bomber jacket with "working zippers"). His tiny plastic arsenal comprises a baseball bat, grenades, knife, pistol, sniper rifle, and assault rifle.

Initially revealed in October, the mobile edition of GTAIII was set to support only the highest end of mobile hardware, but the list of supported phones and tablets has since expanded to include a wider range of devices.

Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition-supported mobile devices:

Apple iOS devices: iPad 1 and 2, iPhone 4 and 4S, iPod Touch fourth generation

Android phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x

Android tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive

LOL, at 4:00 where he's beating up the prostitute another one passes by and she's like "Hy bayybeee wanna get some..." *yoink* (turns around)

jevanteb12 5 pts

It should be available for PSP or PSVita

Jedilink109 17 pts

No but GTA3 is. It's not like they've said that this version is going to have any sort of different content anyway, so it's still the same game regardless...

wavelength121 28 pts

@Jedilink109 I'm pretty sure the anniversary edition isn't available on the PC ::eyeroll::

wavelength121 28 pts

@KrazzyDJ GTA III Anniversary Edition is available on the PC? What?

X_Colbert_X 5 pts

@boiardee14 Or we're giving you thumbs down because, you know, you aren't actually contributing any form of intellectual thought or vaguely relevant information that perpetuates the discussion of this article. But you keep thinking whatever you like.

AuronAXE 28 pts

I wonder, will it be superior to the PC version?

Dann_B 5 pts

Those who are curious about the compatible Android phone list: those are the only phones with a Tegra 2 processor, which I guess is required.

SpiritCrusher99 5 pts

Ohhhh No! I'm going to get fired from my job, for lack of productivity.

KrazzyDJ 6 pts

$5 for this game on any platform is a steal. Heck, one might just donate $5 to this franchise without even buying the game - this series has given me a life away from my life @wavelength121 For the record, the game is available on the PC !!!

Hvac0120 19 pts

curious as to why the Nexus S isn't supported

Hvac0120 19 pts

I'm very glad to see the iPhone 4 added to that list. I hope the controls don't screw up the experience. For $5, I'd pay to play this game again on my phone.

sizey03 5 pts

pi$$ed off its not out on S2!!!

krafty_pk 5 pts

hoping a bit of Chainfire power will work on my lg optimus 3d!

burgeg 29 pts

The guy that doesn't like to have fun in GTA is the same guy that gave GTA IV a 10. It all makes sense now.

Gamer_4_Fun 35 pts

Disappointed S2 was announced to be supported, but won't be during launch. Funny cause it is one of the most powerful androids right now. Hope the support comes sooner than later.

warhawk-geeby 59 pts

It's mental how quickly the games industry is advancing.. When this came out I was amazed at seeing a 3D GTA on a television.. and now you can play it on your phone.. Crazy I tell you. And all kinds of awesomeness.

GunBladeHero 25 pts

@Office_Ninja Couldn't agree more.

ALLoY1717 22 pts

I'm skeptical that the controls will work all that well but for $5 I'm sold.

shani_boy101 19 pts

$5 for GTA III? Sure. $150 for an action figure? No dice.

Auction_Sniper 5 pts

I loathe playing console oriented games with virtual buttons... Wouldn've been better if they had re-released an HD anniversary editon for the PS3 and X360

Masoodahmedkk 5 pts

$5 is really cheap for such a masterpiece.

kcmcgrady_1 5 pts

@boiardee14 the thumbs down icon also means disagree, and thats why ppl clicked it, lol if they thought is was the worst series, they woulda agreed with you. smh

boiardee14 5 pts

ya cmon ppl keep giving my comment thumbs down cuz i said GTA is the worst series ever! u must secretly know that it sucks or u wudnt give my comment thumbs down.

Jedilink109 17 pts

@cheamo Yeah I think they said that those devices are confirmed to absolutely work with the game. Although they never strictly said it won't work on other phones or tablets, I wouldn't exactly count it out, but don't get your hopes up too high in case it's ONLY supported on those systems...

SicklySunStorm 9 pts

Definitely interested, but I want to read a few reviews first... I always have doubts about controls on detailed games like this on my iPad and iPod. Some do surprise me, but most do fail somewhat if I'm honest.

Rheinmetal 7 pts

Terrific news!...for the millionaires.

cheamo 16 pts

This is awesome as long as that list of supported phones doesn't mean it's exclusive to those devices somehow, which I'm assuming it's not.

keyb0red 6 pts

Brilliant. Cant wait to get my hands on this

VenkmanPHD 6 pts

omg it will work on my g2x AND it's only 5 bucks? the only way this could be better is if it came with a zombie mode.

Phantasmica 5 pts

strange its not for windows phone

DiscGuru101 26 pts

I don't have a mobile device that can run it, but if/when I do, I'm tempted.

Jedilink109 17 pts

@wavelength121 This game IS on PC along with Vice City, and San Andreas (as well as GTA IV and Episodes From Liberty City.)

SDBusDriver1979 15 pts

no xperia play support? no support from me.

aussiemuscle 11 pts

games studios must love that they can now flog all their old games again to new mobile devices. double-dipping!

nate1222 111 pts

Just as I'm considering getting an Android. Too sweet.

psx_warrior 9 pts

Does anybody have a clue if this game can run on the samsung mesmerize or not, 'cause that's my phone.

nobodylive 5 pts

Although I have a supported phone, it WOULD be really nice to see a HD Collection come out. 3 GTA games upscaled to HD with the support of Achievements/Trophies ( For people who enjoy getting them, like me; I think they're fun to get.) That would be amazing, but I can settle for this right now. I just have to see how it turns out on my Photon first.

boiardee14 5 pts

lmao! all of u gave my comment thumbs down cuz u know my comment was true about GTA being the worst series ever. truth hurts.

HailHellfire 24 pts

i would like to see them bring San Andreas to the iPhone... either way, i am looking forward to this 10th Anniversary Edition...

giedrius1001 6 pts

no xperia play support is like to spit on gta 3 game, disgusting

JoVelociraptor 5 pts

GTA3 should always be remembered as a mark on (r)evolution of videogames. Go get it!!!

OGKNav 15 pts

That's fine. I got a place in the Red Light District where we can lay low, but my hands are all messed up. So you better drive, brutha.
