Crimson Map Pack out now free for War Games Map Pass owners, $10 otherwise; Extraction mode now also available.
Halo 4's first wave of downloadable content is out now. The Crimson Map Pack for Microsoft's new sci-fi shooter adds three new maps and eight achievements worth a total of 250 Gamerscore. It is available as a free download for those who have a $25 War Games Map Pass or $10 otherwise.
As was previously announced, the maps included with the Crimson Map Pack are Wreckage, Harvest, and Shatter. The maps will be playable in their own playlist that only features the new environments.
The Crimson Map Pack also brings a new game mode to the mix called Extraction. This new 5 vs. 5 objective-based gametype tasks players will extracting assets from various locations. Once a squad has found an extraction site, they must plant a beacon and protect it. The defending team will receive a point if they control the beacon. If they fail to do so, however, they attacking team will be awarded a point. The first team to extract five points is the winner.
Microsoft made clear that those who own a War Games Map Pass should not purchase the Crimson Map Pack, as they will be charged twice if this occurs.
Two further Halo 4 expansions will follow the Crimson Map Pack. These are the Majestic Map Pack and the Castle Map Pack, due in February and April, respectively.

I love map packs. I don't get why people flip shit about them. They have to make money. Its a fucking business. Don't expect everything to be just handed to you. And hell, if they make more money this way, be glad. That means they have more money to put into the development of the next game to make it better. Halo 4 has the biggest development cost of any Halo game to date. Also, its not like they are charging exorbitant amounts of money for these map packs. $10. Its not a lot.
3 Like If you like a game $25 shouldn't really be an issue. If you got it from the Microsoft store they actually included a $25 gift card if you pre ordered. But if you can't afford 25 you might want to step back , take a deep breath and ask yourself where you failed at life.

I really wish they'd release a backlog of old maps for free. I'd be in that playlist all the time.
This is soo stupid. This should be free, why release a new game then make new multiplayer map packs with exclusive online modes to those map packs, only to have those of us who don't get the map packs the instant they're out not available to play certain game types.

@Sn00pyBrown get a PC (if don't have one already) and play TF2. I bought it way back in 2007 and haven't had to pay another dime for it sense. Yay Steam/PC/Valve!
man i wish i would have look at the map pack, would have loved to get it for free (as it should be to begin with).
The big news here is that they are making another map pack for LE costumers. This is huge that means they have to actually make a map pack not just use the maps they already made and decided not to put on the actual game to charge more later.

Only releasing a dominantly multiplayer game with 8 maps is criminal. Glad a lot of people got this map pack for free.
@ravenkiller Yes lots of people got the map packs for free so lots of LE buyers are complaining. Why paying if you can get something free? But I read that in the HaloWayPoint forum (from another user): 'Frank O'Connor: 343 Industries - "We have looked into this particular issue regarding our release of the Crimson Map Pack and are planning on releasing a fourth map pack to those who purchased the Limited Edition of Halo 4 to make up for the distress."' (no source though).
@hydrobeast @ravenkiller I'm glag for you :) Too bad I spent money for a LE and wasted some of it (800 points, maybe more). ^^'But Halo 4 has been pretty disappointing to some players (where's my Rumble Pit and Race mode??) so maybe we'll get a bit more population in servers with free map packs.
@hydrobeast @ravenkiller I paid for the LE so I didn't really care about how to get the pack for free but as far as I understood you only had to go to the market place and where it should say "800MS" it'll be "0MS". Microsoft admited it was their fault so people who got the pack for free won't be banned or anything. I don't know if you're too late though.
The article is very confusing. Extraction is already in the game, it's just not on any playlists. Does this mean it's in a playlist now, or only in the Crimson pack playlist?
@FarmFreshDX As far as I understood, now extraction's in MatchMaking war games when it previously was only in custom games... Like Grifball... Why did they spend money to develop a game mode and not putting it in public matches??

@hydrobeast @FarmFreshDX No money? But if more modes make more people happy, doesn't it mean more copies sold/people keep playing so it's *is* more money. And how much does it cost to create a mode and not adding it or just to remove it within a week?
I am not into map packs anymore, but I do like Halo 4. I'm too busy though with other games to hone in on maps for a single game.
I am downloading this when I get home. The current maps get boring really fast for some reason.
Why do people hate map packs so much....you should be glad that companies do map packs and dont let the games die because they dont want to keep thing fresh....Do you think if they lowered the prices that you would buy them, if you would then you should stop complaining.
1 Like @mrsniper83 The problem with map packs is that, although there is no definitive way to actually know this unless u work with M$ or 343, these should been with the full game in the first place because the chances are these dlc maps were completed with the full game but they decide to hold them back so they could charge people for them a little while later. They haven't even sorted out their online file sharing yet and they already release map packs. The very least they could do is charge people less for them.

@huerito323 @dreamfist11 Exactly, it's a business, but it's an entertainment industry. We're talking about video *games*, it seems logic that they'd try to please us as the more we actually are, the more money they'll make (and not only with sales). Of course it doesn't always work like that though, some people will be anything if there's enough marketing shove down their throats.
1 Like I think these map packs should be $5. I mean, Halo 4 costs $60 and comes with 13 maps... At $10 for 3 maps, they're implying that around $43 of the cost of Halo 4 was for the multiplayer maps it comes with? I just don't see that logic, especially when I'm guessing that the campaign costs equal or more resources to develop. Also, why the hell are there 13 maps but only like 5 come up in any playlist? I haven't even played Ravine, Impact or Erosion in any War Games matchmaking.
@cwd633 Huh. I watched a lot of videos before the game came out but I did not know this. Seems like sort of a waste to me. I would play on them as they are plain. Thanks for clarifying though.
@cwd633 They had that in Reach and it was horrible, hopefully they don't ruin Halo 4 matchmaking with this.
@DriftEJ20 It would be really cool if the community could create maps and have them implemented into the matchmaking system like in Reach.
1 Like @DriftEJ20 No they just know it's easy money and that people will buy Overpriced DLC. I would say about 80-90% of the DLC I've seen is rather badly priced.
And your cost comparison was generous to say the least. When making the new maps 343i didn't have to make any guns, balance them, make a UI or any of the other things that a company has to do with making a new map. I prefer the old days when people made their own maps and the great ones were the ones you saw on the majority of the servers.
1 Like @nedrith I like making maps and people have made some pretty awesome things in Forge, but what you really get with the new maps is new environments I suppose. In Reach, Forge World got pretty old to look at, what with only Forerunner architecture and grass. I got maps mixed up because I couldn't even define them by environment or landscape or landmarks for the most part.
