I Am Alive PC port may not happen: director
Piracy makes PC version's profitability uncertain; creative director Stanislas Mettra still working on feasibility of port.
The upcoming action title I Am Alive may be heading to Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, but a PC version of the game has yet to be announced. The reason for this, according to the game's creative director, Stanislas Mettra, on IncGamers, is that a PC version is still uncertain.
Before a recent update to the article, it stated that Mettra was aware about PC gamers being vocal regarding any statement about the PC version of the game.
"We've heard loud and clear that PC gamers are b****ing about there being no version for them," Mettra said in the original article. "But are these people just making noise just because there's no version or because it's a game they actually want to play? Would they buy it if we made it?"
Mettra also said he believes it's hard to port games to the PC platform because of piracy after weighing the cost of buying it against the cost of making it.
"Perhaps it will only take 12 guys three months to port the game to PC; it's not a massive cost but it's still a cost. If only 50,000 people buy the game, then it's not worth it."
Later, Mettra sent an email to IncGamers, stating that he was "misunderstood" in regards to his position on the PC version of the game and PC gaming as a whole. The email reads as follows:
"I would really love to see a PC build of the game and I don't think I meant to say 'the game won't happen on PC.' It's probably an English language miscommunication (I am not a native English speaker).
"What I meant is that the PC version did not happen yet [sic]. But we are still working to see the feasibility of it, which is not necessarily simple. I gave some examples to illustrate the problematic [sic], but obviously it is not in my hands and not my part to talk about this.
"Honestly, which game maker would not love his game to be playable on as many platforms and by as many people as possible?
"Regardless [of] console or PC, what matters is the game and the pleasure people can get from it."

Unless there's a comprehensive (as in, you can experience the gameplay / climbing mechanic thoroughly), I doubt I'll buy. This is the problem with digital only game -- it's a big risk and there's zero trade value or recourse for refund.
So 50,000 customers isn't worth a port of an existing game. Greedy much?
@Vambran I dont know its true or not, cos Im never work with them (scener), so I can't say or claiming anything. But, theres 1 thing that I know, Im a customer. Lets just say, we bought something with our money and LEGALLY! BUT, do we need a "permission" to use what we bought? TBH, I dont blame the scener. But, I blame the person who uses their cracks and dont give a F to the developer! You killed a person with a knife, do you blame the blacksmith? Just my opinions :D Peace
Pirating is a big industry. Those in-charge make lots of money and even have their own of PR team of a sort. They lurk on forums and post negative comments about DRM and whatnot to keep profits up. True story look it up.
Aw No! I'll cut myself while playing Skyrim for MY loss PUbisoft...
You being idiot soft
Lol at all the PC gamers crying about this. I love the reactions. Especially the, "I'll never buy another game from Ubisoft ever again." Guess what? Yes, you will. I love it when people take a stand against things that don't matter.
It looks like he did not believe himself about the game he made, if he was confident about his product, then he would easily says, "this game will sell millions, instead of 50 000 copies"  what a waste bitc*in' about crappy game,, there's a lot great games that made for PC (CD Projekt, Dice, Blizzard, Valve, etc.)... hey,, UbiSoft It's not only you that made games for PC.. if you do not want sell your products then go Fk away, we could easily buy $ 1000 hardware products, why do we care about your cheap lamey port DRM...
Damn you "Ubisoft" again... Don't abandon PC Players or I will stop buying your products once for all... Please know that XBOX gets pirated first of 'em all...I was eagarly waiting for the game and now you do this... Ubisoft sucks for this kinda mentality.
I've got some other games to occupy me for now, so... botch it up however you want Ubisoft, it's your company.

I like that devs still haven't figured out that it's just as easy to pirate stuff on the consoles as it is on PC -.-
is it me, or is Ubisoft is in second place next to Activision for the worst gaming companies ever?

@AuronAXE How To Make a PC Port Successful: Original game must not suck. There, I tidied it up for you.
More piracy on pc my A$$, the 360 was hacked, jtaged, modified and flashed since day one, they sell 360 games for 5$ in my country, and since the PS3 is hacked its games are practically free. Simple lesson, if your game doesn't sell well, it's probably because it sucks.
*sigh*
More money in console sales? Yes it is a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to pirate crack and cheat with PC games.
If only 50,000 people buy your game is because it's a crappy game and not because piracy
We get it Ubisoft, you hate PC Gamers. Now become a console only developer already so we can stop listening to you guys whine on and on. I'm quite happy to give my money to other developers, and they are quite happy to have my business. Now go away already. btw nobody pirates stuff on the xbox right? (sarcasm for those that can't pick up on that)
To many PC pirates. I'll stick to consoles, thank you very much.
Cmon now Mettra, make sure that ur game sees the light of day first...then dream of porting it to PC.....
This is total BS. This is nothing more than just an excuse to not release the thing on the PC. Last I recall Steam has 40+million users who download games legally and also the witcher 2 a game that was on retail with no Draconian DRM( Like Ubisoft) sold somewhere around 300000 units on the first month of its release.
@parrot_of_adun Agreed.
Bla bla bla bla...yeah NO ONE Pirates on console..Skyrim and lots of games Leak before the official release dates. Pc pirates are just an excuse for not spending addicional $ for making an ACTUAL DECENT game port.
pirating a video game may seem like the best way to stick it to these large companies but, honestly, it really isn't. what you are telling them is that there is still a demand for their product so they will not change their policies. if you really wanna stick it to them and get them to change their policies on DRM, stop buying their games. if enough people do it, sales will go down and maybe then they'll change stuff up.
@SolidTy I assure you, every PC gamer who heard what that pretentious @$$hole said i assure you that they'll want his game sells so bad until the one b1thching is none other than him.
You know what Ubisoft. Forget it... I'm done with you. I'm tired of the excuses. I'm tired of your ridiculous Draconian DRM. And quite frankly, I'm tired of the cookie cutter dumbed down games you've been making lately. The constant pushing out of the same games over and over again. The way you disrespect your customers and insult our intelligence. I'm tired of hoping you can be redeemed, when clearly you have no wish to improve as a company. And I'm tired of the excuses and BS you constantly push on us gamers in your press releases hoping that we'll swallow it and follow you blindly. Yep, I've had enough. I'm done with you. You're just not worth the effort anymore.
pass
ubisoft are bunch of idiots. They expect people to buy their games , when they do a sh!t job of porting and put the worlds worst DRM on top to keep from people that even bought from playing it . And then what they do? they b!tch that people pirate their games. Well wtf do you think people will do with the choices you give them!
Thank you this was very helpful. I said something really bad to my girlfriend today, but now I know to just tell her English isn't my native language. That should fix things.
PC gamers "b1tching"? Frankly he can sod off with his game.
"half of all console games are bought pre-used" Not here broski, pre-order/new errrrytime~
Haha, thats funny considering that half of all console games are bought pre-used. Idiots, nobody bothers getting your games on PC because they are already crap and made even worse by terrible porting.
TBH, even though I do have a bit of bias against PC gaming because it is in fact the biggest spot for pirating, we should really be targeting the pirates instead of the gamers.
I love how he first looked down on PC gaming and then quickly took it back and conveniently blamed it on his not being a native English speaker. If you notice, the third paragraph of the email is that of an advanced English-speaking person. But hey, as long as there's a misplaced "yet" and the odd "problematic", then he's truly a subpar English speaker!
@A_Belmont You just won't let it go,huh? VgChartz doesnt include digital sales, only retail ones, and Steamworks games are mostly purchased on Steam digitally,so you won't find any info there. MW3 and other year to year games sell very low on PC since that kind of buisness model doesn't work on PC we don't buy games thar offer no improvements or changes from its predcessors, and thats the main reason why Madden franchise ended out of PC,we didn't want to pay each year for a roster update. On PC,we keep playing our games for long periods of time,we don't switch every year. For example.Starcraft 1 after a decade still has a strong gamer community.Counterstrike too,and there are more of such examples. There is a differnce in PC and console gamer mindset, console gamers trade in their games often and hold onto them for shorter ammounts of time.PC gamers hold onto them for a long time, and things like modders encourage that...
@A_Belmont Notebooks/Laptops aren't meant to be used to play games. And my 4 year old PC can play Assassins Creed 2 just fine at higher resolution than either of the consoles can. Also, are college students really the best measure of the gaming community overall? They are generally low on extra cash. Most of the people pirating software wouldn't pay for it if they couldn't get it for free. That's why Microsoft lets universities sell copies of Windows and Office to students for 10 bucks, because they know they most likely aren't going to pay for them anyway. Fighting piracy is a losing battle. It's more common on the PC because it's easier, but if they stop making games for the PC I guarantee you the number of people pirating console games will skyrocket.
@Rocker6 and yes, those were just this week's sales. But still, you can look at any game launched on console & pc, the pc numbers make up a small little fraction of the total sales.
@Rocker6 Dude, before you go saying stuff like that, you really should check your facts. http://www.vgchartz.com/ Go here, it's a analtyics site for game sales. Notice that COD MW3 has sold over 6,000,000 worldwide on EACH console, for a combined total of 12,000,000 copies. The PC version? 369,000 - that's only 3% of the combined console sales. PC gaming might be big on it's own, but it's almost insignificant when compared to the size of the console market.
"We've heard loud and clear that PC gamers are b**ching about there being no version for them," Mettra said in the original article. Screw you, now you really shoudn't release to PC. And i really hope I Am Alive is the fail game of the year, it started as a great idea descending to this crap of downloadable game. And TYI Mettra, most of games sell better in PC, especially those in Steam. This is the last straw, i'll never buy this **** game of b**ching developers.
@A_Belmont Well, since Steam alone has 30 million users, and there are a lot of PC gamers that don't own Steam accounts,I would say PC community is large enough, and I suppose most of them can run newer games(you don't need enthusiast grade hardware to do so).Skyrim also had a great opening on Steam. Also revenue from PC gaming is growing, and there are predictions how it will overtake console revenues in a couple of years. And don't forget how on consoles devs don't lose money from piracy only, but from used game sales too... PC gaming may have a smaller user base compared to consoles, but its still strong, and it brings enough profit, despite piracy(that isn't that big,on TPB I saw about 13 000 users downloading Skyrim, while on Steam 200 000 ppl played on release, including me,OFC).So to conclude this,Ubisoft is wrong, many gaming companies made great sales on PC just by respecting the PC community with good ports and exclusives.Ubisoft didn't do that,so they are getting pirated and having low sales.I understand if you disagree, but this is just my opinion on the situation.Let's finish with this discussion, howewer first I must admit you gave me something to think about, and that's good...
illegal activities is not cool. get a job, and support developers for there hard earned money.
@Rocker6 You're clearly trying to sidestep the point that for demanding software titles (And Assasins Creed 2 isn't going to run on most netbooks/older laptops/ older desktops), The PC user base is SO LOW compared to the PS3 or the 360. So even if Piracy is Rampant on those consoles, the sheer user base for each console makes it a much better target platform than the PC. Try not to think of this from a consumer standpoint but from a management standpoint. Ubisoft's higher ups are clearly sticking with the DRM, that's their business model. No amount of community complaints seems to be disswaying them from it, so you may as well not purchase Ubisoft PC games until they make it expressly clear they're changing their business model. If you pirate, you give them legal power, and the last thing consumers want is to give Ubisoft any sort of power or reason to cling to their (bad) business model. Plenty of good games that don't include DRM and intrusive crudware get pirated to heck and back. If you doubt me just go look at the pirate bay right now and look for Skyrim torrents. Nothing illegal about informing yourself. Whether or not the DRM is bad, PC games have a smaller user base, /and/ I would say a higher piracy rate. I know plenty of people at college who have consoles, maybe one or two pirates. I know plenty of people who pc game, and about 80% of them pirate.
@A_Belmont Why should Ubisoft make PC games? Easy question, because if you do it right without putting in crappy DRMs and crap, you will get good sales and make profit.Fill games with intrusive DRMs and crap, and you will get low sales and piracy,a simple fact Ubisoft can't understand... And keep in mind, when I was talking about console piracy,I didn't mean the DS,I meant PS3 and Xbox360,both are heavily pirated, and its still a problem, like on the PC.Piracy is a part of the industry,it won't go away, and treting loyal consumers like criminals won't do nothing good, perhaps it will even turn them into pirates.
Other then being a crappy a console port full of BS DRM this is the reason why I'll never by ubisoft games with some exceptions like Trackmania until they're in the $5 bin
@Rocker6 Yes Piracy exists on the consoles - I'd be a silly fool to not see what's happened with the DS. And I'm not defending Ubisoft's DRM practices either - I'm just saying, if I were in a position where I had to be sure my team's efforts generated the money necessary to pay them, I wouldn't make a PC game (and I just sold my console and bought all the components for my second PC, so I'm not a PC hater!). Even if there is console piracy, there's admittedly far more console players. If Ubisoft is going to be pirated, why would they make PC games? Again, not even attempting to defend their DRM, having to be constantly online and connected to their servers is the most BS thing in the market.
@A_Belmont Well,I disagree.Consoles have piracy too(Do you have any REAL proof that isn't specualation how piracy is more prevalent on PC than on consoles???),and devs who make good games for PC without including corporate crap like always online DRM,etc get good sales and the respect of the PC community. We'll gladly support such companies,CDP,Valve are the examples. What Ubisoft does is in fact asking for piracy,a dumb practice that simply doesn't make any sense...
Yeah, the guy has a point. If I were to be heading a game project, and was in charge of making sure my devs got the money they deserve for their hard work, I'd question making a game for PC. Will the sales just get gobbled up by the thousands of pirate copies circulating? Another question is, what motivates people to steal shareware? Entitlement? Compulsion (addiction)? When will people start respecting the fact that devs gotta eat, as much as anyone would love to put games in the hands of gamers for free, it's just not feasible for most titles.
@doheny420 I think most people would take, , to mean what I thought it did, but nevermind then. Your post gave off a rather different impression than its intent, and I suppose in that case I would recant a few things. Still though, the reasons Mettra said what he did are based on fallacy, not fact. He ought to either be worried about videogames in general, or not worry about piracy at all.
