India-set Assassin's Creed on Ubisoft's radar

ACIII creative director says he would "love" to make a franchise entry set in the Raj; World War II, feudal Japan, and Egypt the "worst settings."

Assassin's Creed III is set in Colonial America, and a future installment in the series could have gamers slitting throats in Colonial India. Speaking to the Official Xbox Magazine, Assassin's Creed III creative director Alex Hutchinson said Ubisoft is excited about the prospect of bringing the franchise to that country.

"[Assassin's Creed III writer Corey May] really wants to do India," he said. "I would, too. I'd really love to do the Raj."

Elsewhere in the interview, Hutchinson said the three most-asked-for Assassin's Creed settings are World War II, feudal Japan, and Egypt. It's unlikely a future franchise entry will take place in these settings, as the developer said, "They're kind of the worst settings for an Assassin's Creed game."

Hutchinson did not specifically explain why those settings would not suit an Assassin's Creed game, but he did say, "People on the Internet suggest the most boring settings."

Assassin's Creed III is due out in North America for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U on October 30. A European launch will follow on Halloween. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's latest coverage.

I have a story idea. Set in 1236. The main characters, Salim Al-Sayf and Suleiman Al-Sayf (brothers, two high rankers of Indian assassins) receive a mysterious letter telling them to return to Delhi as soon as possible. In the way they encounter Sultan Ruknuddin's forces, but they are mistaken that it's Sultan Iltutmish who betrayed them. After arriving in Delhi, they take help from an informant who tells them that the letter was from Razia Sultan. They rush to the palace, only to find that Ruknuddin, who succeeded Iltutmish after his death, was killed and the throne was taken by Razia Sultan. When asking their need, they find that it was to overthrow the corrupt ruler and restore peace. More importantly, it was to safeguard the Sultan from her enemies. After some investigation, the two assassins find that Shah Turkan has planned to kill Razia by digging a pit where she practices horse riding. They sneak in and warn the Sultan. After some time, they come to know that some Amirs (nobles) are plotting against Razia Sultan. They are not allowed in the palace at night, so they sneak in and succeed in warning the Sultan again. Some time later they find out that Malik Altunia has waged war against Razia Sultan, and have to fight alongside the Sultan's forces. Razia gets captured. They attempt a rescue but fail. A sudden message comes from Razia that she has formed an alliance with Altunia. They help the two to retake the throne from Behram (Razia's brother). Behram's forces engaga in a fierce battle against the forces of Razia and Altunia. Razia and Altunia are killed in the battle, and the two assassins are severely wounded. The last part is to escape alive.

P.S: These are actual historical events, with the main characters and their actions made by me. If anyone likes my idea, be sure to give me a Like.

@chiefda Dude I live in the city where Altunia ruled (Bathinda), and yes this is actual History. But you have not written it clearly, Razia marries Altunia. There is  a lot of plot and settings that can go in this story. It has love, betrayal and bravery. Well picked story. I hope this is picked up cause I can't wait to play AC in my historical city. There is a great big fort of Bathinda where Altunia ruled and where Razia was imprisoned. I go there every morning for a walk on the parapet.

@TajinderWalia @chiefda If by any chance you come to know Ubisoft's email ID, please mail my idea to them too. (I tried my level best posting it as comments on Ubi staff's profile page, forums etc.)

@TajinderWalia @chiefda Yes. I know that, actually I forgot to mention it here but mentioned it elsewhere. She was imprisoned and given a choice- marry Altunia or die.

@chiefda Excellent idea! Best of all the ideas I have heard... from Xfire, Yahoo, Raptr and XBOX LIVE friends, this and other posts etc. Ubisoft, in my opinion, this will be a sureshot hit.

chiefda
chiefda

@SHUBHAMPURI Forgot to mention, on their way back to Delhi (7 days trip), they encounter Sultan's forces for 5 days, during which they assassinate important military chiefs and officers. Then forces mysteriously stop attacking them, they think of it as a trap. (Actually, this was the time when Razia Sultan had ascended to the throne and called off the attacks on the assassins ordered by Ruknuddin). Second thing is that after warning Razia Sultan of the conspiracy of the Amirs, they have to find and execute the then Nizam-ul-Mulk (Prime Minister) who went in hiding.

@vyaswanth I have just imagined such a game...set in the reign of Khaljis, Tughlaqs or Mamluks... the battles of that time, just imagining the gameplay of AC in those battles gives the impression of a true Game of the Year...

The title on this article is really misleading. India-set AC is NOT on Ubisoft's radar. This is just two people within the company saying it would be cool if they could do an AC game set in India, it is not planned and probably won't be. Assassin's Creed had always been planned as a trilogy in the first place.

chiefda

@tanktank537 If I may clarify you, the TRILOGY ends only Desmond's story. Ubisoft staff has said that there will be more games, though having a different protagonist.

Feudal Japan's not that  bad but i guess the Ubisoft folks wanted to try something new since there are too many stealth type games based on Feudal Japan including the Tenchu series and Shinobido. On the other hand WWII and Egypt aren't that suitable.

@Natanoz  WWII is definatly not suitable dont be stupid plus the amount of games set in that bloody time period is just gettin annoying these days

@true_gamer007 no, I mean southeast Asia, like Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, & etc. not east Asia (japan), the cultures are a lot of different.  The countries in that place have a lot of history about colonization, wars, religions, mixed cultures, & human rights.

@nedsig7 +1 on this. Southeast Asia should not be overlooked. There's a lot of exotic locales and rich history in this region =)

Couldn't think of a better setting for an AC game, a country, culture and history thats never really been covered properly before, perfect.

Also disappointed to see people moaning about "thick accents" and the like. Grow up and get out more, theres a whole world out there.

so heres how the story might go the brits a.k.a the templars  find an interesting artifact to be located in india so they go on a treasure hunt however the assassins too find about it  and send couple of their men after them including Conner if  the time period is around the 1770s to the early 1800s otherwise its some new character and the story goes on. but i do think the location is awesome although u may feel its a little older as compared to the states in AC3 although on the bright side u may get to see the Taj Mahal in its younger years

THIS IS FOR THOSE OVERREACTING MORONS WHO DON'T KNOW TRUE INDIA IS. Perhaps because they never step out of their mama's room and don't know the reality of this world.

And don't question about my info coz i'm an Indian.

India is a cultural and religion hub and has a vast diversity of both people and culture.

We have people speaking english in various accents in India itself. I agree it includes thick accent too. (Mine is not that so don't point me out).

From a friendly and western-oriented  to bizarre people and traditions, everything exists here.

AC in India would be a great concept because there was really an intense treachery and torture imposed upon the Indians. Then there are our great freedom fighters who gone through so much pain for freedom.

Torture, freedom movements, open assaults and betrayals and true patriotism, everything existed at that time.

@true_gamer007 im an indian too . ur right about the concept being too interesting but  the time period may or may not  the colonial period  but pre colonial times were awesome too it was the era.so lots  of the mughals so lots interesting history here as well.

a lot of people here think marketing is just giving customers what they want? well if that was the way then i think almost anyone would be an amazing marketer, sometimes you show the customer what they want. For example nobody wanted or asked for a game set in colonial america before AC3 was announced, but as soon as they've shown it, now the majority of people who is a fan of AC definitely want to play it, they're pre orders show proof of this and for those horribly bad mouthing Hutchinson @chrisangelo2k7  this guy gets paid to research, and asses whats best for the franchise and I don't know wether he was involved in the last two (or Four if you count revelations or brotherhood) but if he was, then i think you can guarantee he knows what he is on about, i think maybe he meant cliche time periods, rather than boring anyway, its always good to go for something spectacular rather than just take the obvious or predictable route, and this is something the franchise has always done avoid the obvious and predictable.

@chrisangelo2k7 Because the customer is always right & always knows more about the artisan's profession than they do.

And developers making a game in a setting that they don't like & don't think will work BUT is what a large proportion of the fanbase want will result in a better game than if it were in a setting that the developers really enjoy the feel of & know plenty of ways to make it fun & interesting BUT isn't what said proportion were asking for.

You know, sometimes I get worryingly close to agreeing with that whole 'gamer entitlement' thing...

Hahaha, that last Hutchinson quote is brilliant!

Got to admit, the only one of those three settings that I liked was Egypt, & frankly that would suck for gameplay. The Raj DOES sound a lot more interesting, would have fantastic gameplay, & the potential for an Assassin's/Templars thing going on in the backgorund would be far more interesting than anything the other three could pull off - Egypt would pretty much be restricted to slaves vs rulers while WWII would just end up becoming a conspiracy theory (as close as much of the franchise is to that already, especially by the sound of ACIII).
