Resistance 2 creator teases new game for Sony's flagship console; studio named fifth-best place to work in California.
Insomniac Games has been committed to Sony's hardware dating all the way back to Disruptor, its maiden effort released in 1996. Since then, the Burbank, California-based independent studio has crafted some of the most well-known franchises appearing on Sony's console, including Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and, most recently, Resistance, the first installment of which was a launch game for the PlayStation 3.
Consequently, it came as no surprise when Insomniac revealed today that it is currently at work on a new game exclusively for the PS3. Word of the upcoming project came by way of an announcement touting Insomniac as one of the top five places to work in California. As such, no details were revealed on the game, which Insomniac still regards as "unannounced."
As for the independent studio's award, Insomniac said that it was ranked fifth in this year's Employers Group "California's Best Places to Work" survey. According to the Employers Group, rankings were determined both by a survey completed by randomly selected employees as well as responses related to a company's work environment, policies, practices, and benefits.
"Last year was an especially historic time for Insomniac in that we launched two successful games in one year while also laying the groundwork for our new North Carolina studio," Insomniac Games founder and president Ted Price said in a statement. "It's therefore especially gratifying to earn such praise for our work culture considering the volume of activity and change we experienced. When we factor in the multitude of innovative companies populating the state, this honor becomes even more humbling and special."
The award marks the eighth of its kind that Insomniac has received since 2005. Previously, the studio has been honored for three years running as one of the Top 10 Small Businesses to Work for in America, as deemed by Great Places to Work. Insomniac has also been named as one of the top places to work in various other surveys encompassing the California, Los Angeles, and San Fernando Valley areas.
@SalarianChemist why don't u just stay away from ps3 articles jeez. go and play on your xbox360. we don't want you here. Ps3 and Xbox360 both have there pros and cons (although I prefer the ps3) so stop #$%^&* arguing about it.
my basic thought is when another insomniac game comes out is it has to be good. look at their track record spyro ( the good ones on the ps1) ratchet and clank series and resistance 1 and 2. i can't wait for their next project. do i sound like an insomniac fanboy? probably and i don't mind. oh and one more thing. when do we get some R2 DLC?
this guy SalarianChemist is funny .seems like he is deliberately making everyone pissed off and is enjoying it.
In defense of the xbox sucks statement, 33% failure rate. If it was remotely reliable, it would be a good console. Until 3 out of 10 consoles stop "changing color" to red ring camouflage, they will all suck in my view. Games do me no good if I cannot play them, and I have many friends (8) that have gotten the RROD. the **OD seems to be a popular contender in the microsoft arena. As far as Insomniac, LOVE R&C, I hope they never drop that series. Its something that you can just change a few variables, make new levels, and enjoy all over again. It's also one of the few games that I can just sit, relax, and enjoy playing. Resistance on the other hand, is great in its own way as well. I love the mix of real world and the awesome weapons of Insomniac. I hope they succeed, and do so valiantly.
I love ratchet and clank it's so awsome! Glad thier making a new one. But resistance 2 looks very different than other shooters which is why i think it's going to be a big hit.
@Kilbot and Joshua02381 My comment wasn't aimed at either of you specifically. Sorry for the misunderstanding. It was more of a general rant, like comments saying "xbox sucks" for no apparent reason. Yes, Salarian Chemists reasoning is a little odd, I agree with that... But fanboys still make me want to go on a punching spree....
@RyD3n if you read more of the comments you will see that we were all just having a go super fanboy Salarian Chemists. We are not fan boys but are angry at fanboys like Salarian Chemists who has been writing b******* about how he thinks all consoles but the 360 suck. I myself have a PS3, Xbox 360 and a PC so I see your point and agree with you but, we are not fanboys just angered by Salarian Chemists.
@RyD3n i was merely trying to prove a point at how stupid @Salarian Chemists comments were... if it doesnt make you agitated at what he said then i dont think you are human... go on, read all his posts. See how dumb the punk really is
Why the hell does every piece of news have to turn into a fanboy pissing contest? You fanboys used to make me angry, but now I actually just feel sorry for you. You are all incapable of seeing that both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are good systems (as are the Wii and PC), which is rather sad. And by attaching youselves to a single system, it means you will never really experience the full breadth and depth of gaming. And further more, have no right to call youselves gamers. You will no doubt fervantly disagree with me, but I'm reasonably confident all you'll do is further prove my point...
@ SalarianChemist. Hey man, first up, R2 Multiplayer. is full of online players, i remember seeing the list of online players were up to the hundreds of thousands. If you didnt see rooms, it only explained one thing, your internet service provider sucks a@$. maybe you should drop them a call. Secondly, your cousin picking the xbox360 over the ps3 because of tetris.. thats real classy buddy. read it over and over again and see whether you werent such an idiot in putting that. I guess the xbox360 performs best with 1080p tetris, you idiot... I guess tetris is part of your exclusive title list for the 360. oh and one other thing... the xbox360 has sold 22 million to date... guess how many had the rrod? magic number.. 9 million... hahaha... inferior console... check this out.. A source that has been identified as a team leader and key architect in the creation of the Xbox and Xbox 360 and a founding member of the Xbox team provided insight as to the high rate of failures. The interviews suggest that Xbox 360 units that fail early in their life do so because of problems in the system design, parts supply, material reliability, and manufacturing issues as well as a system not tolerant to faults. These issues were alleged to be the end results of the decisions of management in Microsoft's Xbox team and inadequate testing resources prior to the console's release. A second source cited that, at one time, there was just a 32% yield of one of the test production runs. 68 of every 100 test units were found to be defective.
@ SalarianChemist To be brutally honest, do you really think a lot of us care that your cousin picked the Xbox360 over the PS3 for tetris? so your cousin is dumb enough to think of buying a console and decide purely on tetris? Your cousin doesn't own a PC and can't play tetris there? Who the #$%^ buys an expensive console to play Tetris? At the end of the day, your 360 HW is not even close to the PS3. If i recall correctly, you guys had to buy additional add-ons to hit 1080p. I'm not too sure about the 1080p thing but i know u guys don't have WiFi. I'm not saying the PS3 is perfect. but damn man. shut the %$^& up and go play games. with the 360 you'll have to buy a new console 2 years before we have to just to keep up anyway. I also have to say, I'm starting to question whether u really really have a PS3... your comment about resistance 2 not having enough people to play with on multiplayer... is hard for someone like me to believe as unfortunately i've never had time to play the campaign. I've played the multiplayer each time i turn it on. and i've never turned it on and end up shutting the game down coz' no one was online... I was even enrolled in the beta test and i had no problems there. your other comments on other ps3 games are all stuff u could have figured out before u bought the damn thing. no coop for both resistance and killzone?! u didn't need to own a ps3 and play the games to figure that out.
SalarianChemist stop stubbornly defending your inferior 360 here you won't find any support. By the way do you get free online? Oh, thats right....
I bet it is a ratchet and clank sequel. Depends on what happened in quest for booty. Truly great company.
@GunGriffin Insomniac Games has never made a single game for the psp. Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank were developed by high impact games. Make sure you know what you are talking about before confusing people. ;)
Regardless of these pointless and made up "Console Wars" I hope Insomniac comes out with some new IPs for the PSP as well. They claimed they were done with the platform after Size Matters, and then came out with Secret Agent Clank, I would like to see some new ideas from Insomniac on the PSP other then just PSP exclusive console side stories (though those are indeed fun, and they did a great job with Sony Bend on Resistance) I still feel that the PSP needs a new flag ship title other then the stuff you see on other platforms. IMHO I would love to see Spyro come to the PSP with at least 4 games in a stand alone line of platformers for the system.
@LosDaddie lets see last gen nearly 200m console sold with the PS2 selling 140m and still going. So far this gen 85m have sold with wii 35m 360 28m and PS3 22m. With the wii looking like it's going to sell 100m or more so if the PS3 would sell 50% of what the PS2 sold that would be 70m. So what your saying is the 360 would sell only 2m more this gen.
@SalarianChemist: Well said! :D I'd like to add that the PS3 will be lucky to retain 50% of the marketshare the PS2 held last gen. :)
Uh. gobbo, I think you got confused there. Naughty Dog made Crash and Jak+Daxter games, and Insomniac made Spiro and Ratchet+Clank games. Either ^ or that was terrible sentence structure.
I don't rate Insomniac at all Resistance FOM felt like a homarge to Unreal ( though still enjoyable ) and Resistance 2 lost the speed and I lost interest. Give me Naughty Dog games any day of the week, to be honest if The Dog done a FPS. Insominac's effort would be the "poor mans" equiverlant, much like there PS1/2 ( Crash, jak & daxter/Spiro, Rachet & Clank ) games when put next to The Dogs work.
@ SalarianChemist As much as I respect your opinion and research, you must also realize that you are as well, ignorant. The only reason why I pointed this out is how biased you are when it comes to Killzone 2. Most of the faults that you have pointed out, where already discussed by gamespot editors. As well the reply value of a game does not end on single campaign alone, but also of multiplayer. The graphics engine and rag-doll physics of the game is also to note, as well as the intelligent AI of the enemy, or how the fact they recreated a really good view on how real warfare is like. I.E taking cover, giving covering fire, adjusting to enemy's movements, etc. Granted it does have some load time fails, and of course no co-op. Yet you giving this rating and basing it as a "2005 it could be better" is just ignorant at best. While you are saying you are not trying to criticize the PS3 in a dishonest way, you in fact are. Yet you don't really see it. "I think the developers did the right thing when they decided not to release Haze for the Xbox 360 due to the poor reviews on the Playstation 3." That comment basically proves how biased you really are. You make it seem that all bad games STAY on the PS3 and not on the 360 and they choose to do it that way.
@SalarianChemst also Halo 3 and Gear play at 30 frame per second not 60 they only do that at cut scenes just like Killzone 2. Only a very few games play at 60 frames with most of them being on the PS3 because of the 360 red ring of death. The reason why some games have slower frame rate on the PS3 is because it has its memory in two parts while the 360 has it in just one and those games haven't been ported well. Finally Co-op has been confirmed for Killzone 2 in a later patch
@SalarianChemst you would've Bill Gate's balls dry by now! I don't know where you get your info from but Blu-ray plays at 48MB per second it's BD 2.0 that plays at 54MB per second and the PS3 blu-ray the PC blu-ray plays games upto a MAX of 48MB per second probably more because of all the updates. The reason the PS3 has HD installs is so the BD drive runs smoother so the PS3 is quieter and doesn't over heat unlike the 360
@SalarianChemist 1.) Get a Job and life 2.) Do something with your hopefully newly aquired life. and 3.) shut the **** up.
@ tiukyle, Tetris is the best puzzle game in history, in my opinion. I own Tetris on just about every console I have ever owned. I bought Tetris on Xbox 360 when it was released, and I have to say the Xbox 360 version is the best one I have ever played. I even bought the Xbox 360 Arcade version of Tetris when it was released, just so I could gather some more Achievement Points and have a version to play without putting another disc in the drive. So, to answer your question, yeah, my family and I really think quite a bit of Tetris. I do own a PS3 (although it rarely gets played since the Xbox 360 versions of the multiplatform games are almost always better, which results in me buying the Xbox 360 versions). But I have a cousin who was trying to decide whether she should buy an Xbox 360 or PS3, and the first thing she asked me about what Tetris. When I said Xbox 360 has two Tetris games and Playstation 3 has none, her mind was made up which console she was getting. I'm not trying to criticize the Playstation 3 in a "dishonest" or "bad" way. I'm simply pointing out the facts. I really do give credit where credit is due. That one guy is incorrect--I rated Resistance 2 with a score of 7 out of 10, not 6 out of 10. And that was mainly because there was nobody to play online with since Resistance 2 didn't sell very well. I thought Resistance 2 was much better than Killzone 2.
@SalarianChemst - you're looking for a tetris game for the PS3 console? Hahaha. actually that's what the Xbox 360 is for! It also seems like that's why you own one!
I rated Killzone 2 with a "fair" rating of 6 out of 10. If Killzone 2 would have been released in 2005 when the standards in the videogame industry were less diverse, I probably would have rated the game higher. Unfortunately, Sony's promises for HOME and Killzone 2 sounded good when they were made in 2005, but by the time HOME and Killzone 2 were released in 2009, the industry standards for videogaming had risen beyond what was promised in 2005. For example, in 2009 it is now a 100% expected standard to have games in the First-Person Shooter genre include Co-Op modes. Killzone 2 fails to live up to this industry standard. In fact, Killzone 2 is the only FPS scheduled for the first-half of 2009 that does not include a Co-Op mode. This is obviously very disappointing. Killzone 2 runs at only 30 frames per second graphically, which is also a disappointment, considering games like Gears of War 2 and Halo 3 run at 60 frames per second. This wasn't a surprise, though, considering that there have been times when third-party multiplatform games have been released with the Xbox 360 version running at 60 frames per second, while the PS3 version ran at only 30 frames per second. All-Pro Football is an example of one of these games that I play often. Blu-ray discs actually read data at a rate of 54MB per second, not 48MB per second. However, this is the rate at which data is read off the disc for movies. Playstation 3's dual-speed Blu-ray player is only capable of processing data from a Blu-ray game disc at a rate of 9MB per second, compared to 16MB per second for the Xbox 360 DVD drive. This is the reason why Xbox 360 versions of games have load times that are so much faster. For example, Street Fighter 4 loads for about 30 seconds on the PS3, but it takes only 10 second to load on the Xbox 360. Killzone 2 is actually a game that you cannot install on the hard drive of the PS3. This is very disappointing, because the game is always being read at a slow rate of 9MB per second. This is the reason why Killzone 2 has such slow "hiccups" with load times that look like very long pauses in the framerate. I simply could not give Killzone 2 a "good" or "great" rating, considering that it failed to live up to industry standards in so many ways. I thought that the rating of "fair" was appropriate for a game that lacks co-op and has virtually no replay value in the very short single-player campaign that can be beaten in less than 8 hours. I would also like to comment to Sean...I think you did an excellent thing by grouping Haze and Killzone 2 together--they are identical in many ways. I'm glad you noticed this. I think the developers did the right thing when they decided not to release Haze for the Xbox 360 due to the poor reviews on the Playstation 3.
Ok, did i pass the part when they said what game it was going to be or did they not say. Chances are that this will probably Resistance 3 since 2 was left on a cliff-hanger. Besides, most studios for both movie and games alike tend to make the third sequel come out sooner than it took the second, usually. I think it would suck if it ended up being another ratchet & clank game since i am not a fan of it so i have my finger crossed for R3.
@SalarianChemist - You know that if you had the money, you would have bought a Playstation 3. X-box 360 is a poor mans playstation 3. I can speak from experience, I had 5 X-box 360's, no kidding. You can argue all you want about your exclusives for the 360, but as far as I, and eveyone else in the world is concered, you can keep your Halo, its slow, dated and a waste of time. You can keep your gears of war 1 & 2, I have played them both and, to be honest, I went into a coma it was that boring. But what I will keep is Haze, Killzone 2 and Motor Storm. You will never get to play these games. I feel pitty for you.
The list of "exclusives" doesn't include the games that are "console exclusive." This really does cheat the Xbox 360 out of plenty of high-quality exclusive games where the Xbox 360 is the only console you can play the games on. After all, Xbox 360 has far more "console exclusive" and "timed exclusive" games than the Playstation 3. For example, I think it is stunning that Gears of War 1 is not listed in that list of "exclusives." The reason for this is obviously because Gears of War 1 was eventually released on pc. But everyone in his right might would give the Xbox 360 the points for "console exclusive" for those great games like Gears of War 1, Call of Duty 2: Game of the Year Edition, Prey, Mass Effect, and so many others. After all, Xbox 360 is the only console where you can play those games. I also think that it is interesting how the ps3 list of exclusives includes identical games such as Gran Turismo HD Concept, Gran Turismo Prologue (the $40 demo), and Gran Turismo 5 (which isn't even released yet). If those demos count as exclusives for ps3, then why don't the expansion packs that are exclusive to Xbox 360 for games like Grand Theft Auto 4, Oblivion, and Fallout 3. Those expansions are so huge that they are almost like new sequels. "Sequelitas" is the disease that many people beleive the ps3 has. This list of games for ps3 proves this point. ps3 is a console that was on the market for three holiday seasons before a single game in the Real-Time Strategy genre was available. The reason for this problem is because Sony did not devote their development resources in the proper places. The ps3 has: * Motortorm & Motorstorm 2 * Uncharted & Uncharted 2 * Resistance & Resistance 2 * Pixeljunk Eden & Pixeljunk Monsters & Pixelunk Racers If Sony spent more time creating new franchises instead of making sequels to the same games (or just correctly developed the game the first time), it would be much better and improve sales a lot. I also think it is interesting that Final Fantasy 13 Versus appears in the list as a ps3 exclusive. I just want to confirm that the president of Square Enix said from the beginning that they were considering releasing FF13 Versus on both the Xbox 360 and ps3. The only one that was ever announced as an exclusive was FF13 for ps3...and it should be noted that just like so many other PS3 "exclusives" Final Fantasy 13 was announced for Xbox 360. Developers in Japan have already revealed to industry insiders that FF13 Versus is being developed for Xbox 360 as we speak. If the Sony fans really think FF13 Versus is going to remain exclusive to ps3, it will be just as fun for the Xbox fans when FF13 Versus is "officially" announced for Xbox 360 as it was at the 2008 E3 when FF13 was announced. Honestly, do the math. Final Fantasy 11 is on Xbox 360 now, but not Playstation 3. Final Fantasy 13 is on the way to Xbox 360. Square Enix puts games like Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery exclusive to Xbox 360. Do you really think Final Fantasy 13 Versus would be developed only for ps3, considering that Square Enix supports Xbox 360 so much more than ps3? And considering that Square Enix now places such a high importance on the western market where Xbox 360 has the Playstation 3 outsold by 8 Million units in North America. Also, many of the ps3 games listed as "exclusive" here are far away (years) from being released. This is not a fair comparison with the Xbox 360, because Microsoft focuses their trade shows on the present moment because the Xbox 360 has games to sell right now, whereas Sony doesn't have the games right now, and is forced to focus on the future. If you are going to make it a fair comparison, why not inlude future Xbox 360 games like Gears of War 3, Perfect Dark 2, Killer Instinct 3, Too Human 2, Too Human 3 (since Too Human is supposed to be a trilogy). I also think it's a shame that the ps3 doesn't have any Tetris game at all. Tetris is supposed to be one of those games that all systems have. I think that is one of the reasons why ps3 has a bad reputation for lack of games. The other main factor that works against the Playstation 3 is the fact that almost all of the multiplatform games from third-party developers are better on the Xbox 360 than the Playstation 3 versions. I've lost count of the number of times the Playstation 3 versions have been delayed, released later, not been as good, and costed more money when they were eventually released. I give credit where credit is due. I'm not saying that a games like Africa isn't going to eventually be an "exclusive" to Playstation 3. I'm just saying that most consumers won't know it until the game is eventually released--years from now. It's the same way with Blu-ray...Nice new format, unfortunately none of the movies I like are available for it, and the small number of movies that are available cost $30, which is way too much considering the Blu-ray versions are not remixed for HD, and they don't use the new features like 48-bit x.v. Deep Color.
Good to hear, sort of. I honestly almost despise the R&C games because the franchise has been the same since the first game. I played all of them up to dreadlock and got sick of them. There aren't new R&C games they are just expansion packs. And whats worse is that the story was only good in the first game and the humor is really forced. Can't believe people still play these games.
@brendanhunt1 I think you did a quick grab on exclusives for both but I'm really too tired to check. But from quick skimming it is to note that some exclusives for both were either cancelled or changed to mulitplatform. I.E: LA Noire = cancelled (if I recall correctly) and Saints Row = on PS3 as well.
Its annoying when people say playstation 3 has no games or no decent exclusives, because there is a lot, they've just got there head so far up their own ass they've never bothered to actually look what sony has to offer
brendanhunt1 exactly, my comment got deleted by myself lolz,(fell asleep on the backspace key haha) and one other sad fact is that most of the 360 exclusives came out before the ps3 was out, and noone plays them haha
@brendanhunt1 next time use a space, i was looking at your list and was like , since when is halo a ps3 exclusive
