iPhone 4S moves 4 million in first weekend

By Jonathan Downin

The latest handset to come out of Apple becomes fastest selling in three days, more than doubles iPhone 4 launch numbers.

There are now at least 4 million more phones in the world that will be able to play Infinity Blade II come December 1. Apple announced today that its latest mobile device, the iPhone 4S, moved 4 million units over its first weekend of availability. That's more than double the numbers posted by the iPhone 4 over the same period last year.

This marks the first time Apple has released a phone simultaneously on more than one carrier in the US. The iPhone 4 launched exclusively on AT&T in June of last year and landed on Verizon in February. The iPhone 4S shipped concurrently across the three biggest networks in the United States: AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.

The iPhone 4S is currently available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and the UK. The device's availability will expand to 22 more countries on October 28 and will hit a total of 70 countries by year's end.

For more on Apple's latest, check out the iPhone 4S review at GameSpot sister-site CNET. GameSpot has also broken down what the iPhone 4S means for games.

Mr. Jobs soon departure affected Apple sales. Everybody seems to be paying homage to this great man.

So much for the Apple haters and Androids fan-boys complaining about the "lack of features" in the new iPhone. The most retarded argument is about its standard iPhone screen size. Now, before to be accused to be a fan boy myself beware that I still use an old Nokia N70. And my next phone will probably be a cheap Samsung. I consider it a crime against humanity to have mobile phones costing 500 euro or more.

People always bash iPhone and Apple in this site. Based on this stats, they are only minorities...

So many people desperate to buy a phone. I guess peoples image is everything these days.

That's some serious coin. @Zeratul199 I like your answer (comparing models 'n' OS), but I disagree on one point. "Approved" apps don't necessarily mean better, either in quality or most certainly in price. Two examples: 1) original NES titles given the "quality assurance seal" didn't necessarily mean quality, which is true for iOS apps as well and 2) Google Sky Maps That second example is a free Android app made by Google, which is miles better than the $11.99-18.99 (!!!) iOS StarMap and StarMap Pro apps, respectively. Your main point (quality over quantity) is mostly true. But there are always exceptions to the rule.

There are some hardcore fanboys here LOL. Just choose your device and enjoy it, why get so angry just because another brand is selling well. Who cares if the iPhone sells well, just enjoy the device that you purchased instead of getting your knickers in a twist...geez... You do realize that competition is really a good thing right because it pushes companies to keep making better and better phones.

I'm not against iPhones, Androids, Droids, or any other touch-screen phone. But when it comes to gaming, iphones are inferior in every way compared to game consoles.

I am happy with my iPhone 4 purchase. I like the things my phone can do. I find it provides me with all the features I need. What I don't do is go onto news stories about Android and tell those people how great the iPhone is and how ignorant they must be for purchasing an Android phone. What is the point of people doing this? It's exactly the same as the console wars. Loyalists trashing the competition for a company. And what does that do for you? I don't bash Android because I think it's a great operating system. Someone please explain to me why you feel the need to submit your blind hatred online? A lot of people assume that iPhone user's are ignorant and just blindly purchase the new iOS devices every year. That's not true (for the majority). It's for the same reason that people continue to buy Android phones every year. And that typically comes down to contracts and available resources. Get over yourselves. You're decision to choose an Android phone means that you decided that was what you wanted. Why is it so hard to accept that others could enjoy the competition for their own reasons?

@Daian I live in Japan, the Iphone is cheaper than Andriod phones over here. Also the App store is much larger and has lots of apps that help me with my studies.

well good news for Apple. 4 million iPhone sold in one weekend. 4.5 iPhone S but why didn't Apple add a "S" like Microsoft Xbox 360 S. A Shame Steve Jobs had to die, But it was good for Apple's bottom line.

Daian
Daian

@Oldboy08 lol, of course u like it more then the Blackberry, there's a reason why they might go under if they don't sell the company soon, they're not that good, at least not anymore. Oh, and the best Androids out there (like the Galaxy S II) still pack a bigger punch with a smaller price than the 4S. @Sanguis_Malus A lost soul is saved, welcome to Android my friend ( presuming that's what u use now). I had a person tell me something along the line "oh, but 4S and the Galaxy S II both cost the same on subscription on blabla network". Yeah, well, wanna bet the iPhone subscription is much costlier (and not great) and that in retail the 4S is more expensive even if it has worse tech?

Sanguis_Malus

I'm through with the iphone hype, they are way overpriced & in the UK are often only available on long contracts that don't provide enough data. I won't be buying another iphone.

Wormkid_64
Wormkid_64

@tjoeb123 Nintendo and Sony will not be crowded out by Apple's tabs and phones. Those devices are uber expensive, play almost nothing but casual games, and have only touch controls, which just don't respond like physical buttons. Plus with a phone, you have to have the contract and monthly payment, which I will never do. If I have my eye on a game, and I find out it's on PC on a pay-to-play basis, they've lost a customer. I will not be duped into paying any amount per month for a game I bought, much less the device itself, which in the case of a tab or phone, will be outdated in a year or less. I won't deny that real game devices will have to co-exist with these new devices, but there will always be a place for them if they continue to innovate as they have.

Wormkid_64
Wormkid_64

@DenverNick Yeah I don't deny that someone can have some fun on a smartphone. It's when they start talking about them replacing real game devices that it drives me crazy. I' mean,Angry Birds was fun,but for the past week there were at least 3 articles, features or videos here on Gamespot focusing on Angry Birds. Get real. It's not THAT great. But yeah, that Infinity Blade stuff looks pretty legit, but a phone can still never be a main game device.Anywho, thanks for not being like a lot of the jerks on here who blow up in your face if you have a different opinion than them. Game on.

Every gadget has their own perks, and personally the main reason I beleive iPhone has been successful, is cause it looks good and easy to use for the mass market, Now tell me when you go to phone stores, there are so many customizable options for it, how many other phones come with that option? The mass market is looking not only for a simple phone to use, but one that is customisable too as a fashion accessory, and iPhone takes the cake. Yes it is out of context to this whole site being a gaming site, however its the truth. What's the point of having so much power in a phone if the person using it has no clue about its specs, either that or the mass market doesn't give a hoot about it or cant use it cause it has too much figgety crap. Simply it just looks good and simple to use. Like it or hate it

@ Wizallah . I think the question is not where does Apple hate come from but more like why do people who love Apple have absolutely no tolerance for people who are just a tad more sceptical"?

xkurupt718x

@nanorazor the reason why i call it a quad core with 5 cores is because it has 4 regular cores and the 5th core runs at a lower frequency and uses less power. technically its a quintuple core but i see it as more of a quad core

2/2. I played with the iPhone 4 once before couple of months back and you had to pay for a application just to choose your own song for a tone. Such a boring phone that felt really its on its own. even the media have to be hyped about the iPhone when anything new comes from it, even its a minor upgrade as any basic tech head would know. anyway the use base is more than massive to not make a big fuss out of nothing. It's so boring to hear people go on and on about Apple iPhone, I mean wooow- Look at what my HTC can do- Same as your iPhone but better. ( in the end reality is with any phone to sell is putting the features or new features in a product that the majority of people want and use often.

SIDEFX1
SIDEFX1

@ xkurupt718x, Definitely you are right, Its all trend. 1/2. Anyway my own comment on this is sad i assume, and i am not trolling or flamming or anything like that. For me Apple is a shadow company and a master of manipulation. A evil cult here not for us but for it's own greed undercover to look like it cares or caters for its buyers and followers, I see Apple targeting and marketing towards the people (despite everyone and anyone can buy it) who are different or more similar to ones who lack knowledge to fit in or on the same wave length. They targeted people who buy or use products that engaged our emotions strongly and inevitably make alienation to those who don't share those emotions. I doubt anyone could see a difference in their picture quality even with more MP. as iv heard lots of people talk like a 5MP camera is great. 8MP camera difference from 5MP only means you can print out a bigger picture, The picture quality really comes down to quality of the lens etc etc. I also see Apple as something that is not taking us forward with technology, I mean this trend that Apple has developed in people is corrupted, Everyone wants the latest greatest technology but Apple ript of every patient tech to build the Apple iPhone, example would be touchscreen, They wasnt the first just the best at the time and that what made it huge. Years of Marketing research searching for the worlds emotion.

Well, good for Apple. I personally wasn't at all interested with this round, as to me, the 4S isn't enough of an advancement from the 4 to even fathom an upgrade. Here's hoping for a better one for year six, although I can wait even longer for them to finally get to what I want. As for switching... I probably won't simply because of the Apps I've spent money on. I think those are a consumer trap, lol.

Sometimes I don't get why some people want others to buy the product that they like. People can buy what ever they like and afford and I just don't give a crap, But if they wanted recommendation i just give them my point of view of what good and not so good. Haters= selfish bastards. @xkurupt718x "quad core processor with 5 cores" LOL

its all good hey i like my SGS4G atm no need too upgrade when i can flash diff roms open more then a few apps sure apple leads the base with nice games but the let down for me is the no flashing diff roms but i wont hate on people who like apple.

Oldboy08
Oldboy08

I was an Iphone hater until I got the Iphone4. It's a slick piece of tech, sure it doesnt have flash but that doesn't bother me in the slightest. It beats the hell out of the blackberry I was using prior to it. I just updated to the IOS5 last night and its even better. The app market here in Japan is much larger for Iphone than it is for the Andriod as well.

xkurupt718x
xkurupt718x

@Zeratul199 thats a very respectable answer and i respect your reason to choose the iphone but theres no doubt a lot of ppl just choose it because its an "iphone" and every1 has it so it must be good and they dont even look at its hardware. this is what I was tryin to show was that all the hype for the iphone 4s is bs. ppl gettin all hyped up bout its processor and 8mp camera that can now shoot in 1080p when there have been phones out there that have those specs already. the apple app store is a huge factor over android tho. i can definitely agree on that. and iphone is the leading phone right now simply because its sellin the most.

@ xkurupt718x so your g2x came out in april is roughly as powerful as the iphone 4s, except the g2x has 8gb of memory... same as a 2 generation old iphone. Fair enough it does have an expansion slot on which you have to spend extra money to take it up to a maximum of 40gb. Thats 24 less than my Iphone S. Aside from that lets see, 800x640 resolution vs iphones 960x640. So really we are looking at a technically better phone, sure its out 6 months later but its still better. Now even if technically they were the same (which may I remind you they are not your g2x is inferior). The iphone is available in the same configuration almost worldwide, vs your T-mobile only g2x (Yea i live in Australia) but as I was saying even if technically they were the same, I'll take the one with thousands of approved quality apps, with a well established store which many good companies are designing for. Not to say Android doesn't have good apps, but with free reign to anyone who wants to make one without any form of approval, there is also a lot of crap apps on Android. All that aside I wouldn't say the g2x or other android phones for that matter suck. Because you know I have the maturity to not say: "my thing is the best and everyone else's sucks!" but I as many other people chose the iphone because its as good as the other leading phones, but with a way more established customer base and app store.

xkurupt718x
xkurupt718x

Iphones suck. they barely gave em a dual core processor and an 8mp camera. my g2x came out in april and it was packin the tegra 2 chip and an 8 mp camera. oh and guess what. it also supports flash and has an hdmi output. does iphone 4s have that? hell no. u apple fanboys need to know that u guys are behind and hop off the bandwagon. look up the tegra 3 chip aka kal el. quad core processor with 5 cores

Just because you cant afford one doesn't mean that it sucks! People are so strange with this iphone "hate". Where does it come from? The iphone is an amazing device. Sure it isn't the best gaming device but what it does it does very well.

my point is that people criticize and say that it is cheaper also and you have to lug less things around, and you get the same entertainment out of angry birds or cut the rope, but i own itouch and 3ds and it is nowhere close, i would rather spend the money for the games on my 3ds than buy 10 4$ games on ios

johnthek1d
johnthek1d

for all the posts saying that we try to just act cool because we play 3ds games and that the apps on iphone are cheap... i have a 2nd gen touch, none of the games amuse me all that much, and i havent spent nearly as much time on a single game as i would on my 3ds playing ocarina of time 3d. its neat, but they arent real gaming machines, which is why i dont even understand why this article is posted even.

Funny, this article doesn't mention anything about gaming and yet it is on Gamespot. It seems to be a trend for some GS writers and I wouldn't mind if it stops... I wouldn't care if there's an apple device in every household, this stuff shouldn't be front page, letalone written about unless it has to do mainly about games; hence GAMEspot.

@weaslerz @BigAl519 @Stonecutters508 @Wormkid_64 I'd also like to thank you all for making my initial post "not meet display criteria". Also, just about every other kid I see at dentist offices and various other places are gaming on an iPod Touch instead of the usual Nintendo DS I'm used to seeing. Just sayin'. I also find it funny that A LOT of you can't seem to see what the future holds for portable gaming.

tjoeb123
tjoeb123

@weaslerz @BigAl519 @Stonecutters508 @Wormkid_64 No I am not kidding. Honestly, I wouldn't buy a smartphone solely to game, either. But if you add up all of the sales for and number of the games on the App Store, and take into account the MASSIVE install base for ALL iOS devices (not just iPhone), you can CLEARLY see where Apple is going, and it's CLEARLY a threat to Sony and Nintendo. I myself own an iPod Touch 4, and it's the best portable device I've ever owned. I practically do everything on it, and what it can't do (like play Uncharted), I turn to other gadgets. Also, Apple beat Nintendo to its Wii U concept, only in reverse.

I have been fighting the Apple for years. I am perfectly happy with my Motorola Xoom and have no desire to get an iPad. But, I haven't found a smart phone I've been happy with. I might break down and get an iPhone. My friends seem to be perfectly content with theirs.
