[UPDATE] Analysts' fears exceeded as hardware sales nosedive 38 percent year-on-year--but rise monthly; DS still sells 766,500 as Activision's superhero platformer swoops off with nearly 600,000.
Excluding one-month dips in January and September 2008, the US game industry had until recently enjoyed constant growth since March 2006. That all changed this past March, when the NPD Group reported a 17 percent slide in sales, followed by an identical percentage-point drop in April and an even more precipitous 23 percent decline in May.
Believe it or not, things got worse in June. According to figures released by NPD this afternoon, overall US retail sales of non-PC game software, hardware, and accessories shrank by 31 percent to $1.17 billion, down from $1.7 billion the prior year. The results, the poorest monthly showing since a dramatic 41 percent drop-off in September 2000, were much worse than the 20 percent decline many gloomy analysts were expecting.
"The video games industry realized a significant decline when compared to June 2008, the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines," said NPD analyst Anita Fraizer in a statement. "The first half of the year has been tough largely due to comparisons against a stellar first-half performance last year, but still, this level of decline is certainly going to cause some pain and reflection in the industry."
Hardware was particularly hard hit, shrinking 38 percent from $617.25 million in June 2008 to just $382.2 million. The drop was somewhat paradoxical, as sales of the DS--boosted by the popular camera-equipped DSi, released in April--were still robust at 766,500 units. Its success, though, stands in contrast to virtually every other platform's total, including the second-place Wii's 361,700 units. In third was the Xbox 360 with 240,600 units--nearly 76,000 units ahead of bronze medal winner the PlayStation 3 and its 164,700 units. Sony's other two platforms, the PSP and PlayStation 2, took home 163,500 and 152,700 units, respectively.
"The Xbox 360 is the only platform to have realized a unit sales increase over last June," said Frazier. "Year to date, both the 360 and DS have generated an increase in unit sales....While Wii sales are down from last year, the platform is still realizing very strong sales month after month. Compared against historical performance of other systems this far into the console lifecycle, the [Wii's] unit sales performance is still strong."
The year-on-year comparison also ignores the fact that console sales actually increased from this past May. During that period, NPD reported the DS only sold 633,500 units, the Wii 289,500, the 360 175,000, the PS3 131,000, the PS2 117,000, and the PSP just 100,400.
[UPDATE] However, June software sales were down 29 percent year-over-year while also seeing a month-over-month decrease. Top of the list was the Xbox 360 edition of Activision Blizzard's Prototype with 419,900 units. After this story was initially published, NPD confirmed the PS3 edition--which came in 13th--sold 179,200 units, bringing the game's non-PC total to 598,200 units.
In second place was the 360 edition of the still-strong with 338,300 units, followed by the still-active Wii exclusive EA Sports Active (289,100 units). In fourth was another EA Sports Wii game, the Wii MotionPlus-bundled Tiger Woods PGA Tour (272,400 units), with the 360 (260,800 units) and PS3 editions (210,300 units) of Fight Night Round 4 coming in sixth and seventh. Rounding out the list were THQ's Red Faction: Guerilla for the 360 (199,400 units), and the PS3-exclusive Infamous (192,700 units).
Nintendo ceded its first-party dominance of the software top 10, coming only in fifth (Wii Fit, 271,600 units) and eighth (Mario Kart Wii, 202,100 units). Missing was one Wii title that had been a fixture on the chart virtually every month since its December 2006 release--a fact not lost on analysts.
"Wii Play is finally out of the top 10," Electronic Entertainment Design and Research's Jesse Divnich told GameSpot. He remarked that "UFC keeps on ticking" thanks to perfect timing with promotion of July 11's UFC 100 championship. "That Tiger Woods 10 number is also pretty impressive," said Divinch, noting its 180 percent jump over last year's installment was partly because it had longer to sell and was packed in with the Wii MotionPlus.
Unfortunately, Divnich believes some of June's software winners were disappointments. "People were expecting a little bit more out of Prototype," he lamented. "People were expecting more from Fight Night Round 4 as well." On the hardware front, he believes the pain was shared, saying, "Everybody seems to have taken a haircut across the board. No one hardware platform underperformed relative to the others, and no one overperformed as well."

The reason this is happening is because people aren't buying video games and consoles at the moment, I think certain people are drawing them away from it all, we must fight it off, and find some way to tell Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo that they need to find a way to solve these people's problems so that they will let us buy again, just a theory, I know some people who believe video games are a waste of time for several reasons, I don't agree with them, so it is simply a theory based on my experiences.
Prototype is really creative and just an overall fun game to play,I'm not surprised. Activision-Blizzard released another really successful game for the millionth time in the past 8 years.
I lovee th ps3 a thousand time more than 360 but this is sad a multiplatformer game(prototype) sold 227200 on 360 then a Ps3 exclusive thats really sad i was deciding upon getting a ps3 or 360 and these stats just go to show how sucky psn is gonna be and how little people actually play thier ps3 this is sad as hell
yes DVD does read faster than blu-ray but that doesn't mean the games look any better. In some cases this is true only because of the certain developer on certain games...if you look at SFIV or Bionic Commando, or any of the other comparison videos as of late...both version look the exact ...yes exact same. Not one better than the other the same. Don't get all bent out of shape when some true comes your way...because in actuality I think microsoft has done much more things for the fans than Wii especially. (yes i've owned one of these for a while) it amazes me how they continue to have great sales based on all the shovelware they come out with. They have totally forsaken their core game audience..unless you want to check your pusle and workout. Sony is definitely without fault...they dropped the ball as far as getting netflix for the online users, the copied their previous controller completely and slapped a gimmicky wii iteration into it. Mainly the thing that has hurt them is that they have kept the giant sticker price while in a recession, not smart sony. Overall all the companies have problems I just think other than software problems, microsoft has the most trouble. So please don't just be a fanboy...look at the overall picture.
You've really only had one 360...?...wow..first let me congratulate you...bravo...i dunno how you did it...Seriously second...i forgot to mention earlier of the ring the disc tray grinds into the disc...granted this usually only occurs when you move the system during play, but it is still possible without movement due to a raised ring in the tray. MGS is a big franchise but even the creators themselves said that they couldn't put the current iteration on xbox 360...they said it was impossible, which is why they have to make a different game completely for it. (which i'm sure will be eqaully cool, but in a different way) I'm not completely hating on 360...they have great software and good developer support...but they charge for an online experience..and in my opinion they charge too much for what you get... by now they should've had wifi built in, at least in the elite because yes, some people DO have wifi. if the companies were leaving out features based on consumer stats then most likely HD capabilities wouldn't be included because overall the numbers are low for homes adapting high def televisions.
5)Both machines has its faults. it just happens the 360 occurs more often than the ps3. plus the fault for the 360 is based on luck because i have the launch day 360 and i haven't experienced any problems that other people have experienced . plus the newer generation of 360 should have less chance of getting RROD. 6) After all of that why would anyone invest into the ps3, where majority of the games come on the 360 and those games usually look better on 360. Plus the ps3 is losing more exclusives than the 360 since there is gonna be an mgs game on 360 , most probable FFIV ( as we all know SE has never been truthful to sony). Also game companies like Valve, ubisoft companies that make splinter cell series and soon to be activison has stopped supporting their games on the ps3.
@damonkeypirate "but if people could see the value of other systems with built in wifi and other extra features they could save up for a system...whether it be the minigame hound Wii or a PS3." 1) how many people have actually access to wifi that it justifies as a good investment for the ps3. i can guarantee that percentage is less than 5%. 2) games (multiplatform) made on DVD have proven to have better graphics than games on blu - ray . To name a few : fallout 3, dead space, gta iv all look better on dvd than they do on blu - ray . plus the Cell has been proven to be useless. Even with its so called "power" , games still look better on consoles that doesn't possess it . 3) why would u want to use the internet on the ps3 when you have the pc to do that for you. Those so called extra features so far have been proven to be a useless investment , let me alone a justifiable reason to why the overpriced piece of junk has to be overpriced. 4) i rather pay for xbox live as it provides the service that you pay for and the service that you pay for is hundred times better than psn. Also both machines have to by extra controllers and in fact the people who owned the first generation ps3 would have to buy dual shock 3 controllers just so that the controller has vibration when you play a videogame. If i remember correctly the newer ps3 doesn't even have backwards compatibility so basically you paying a steep price for a machine that has unnecessary accessories.
@ T-razor1 I agree that all exclusives just leave the publisher with a hole in which more money could've been dumped. Infamous is a MUCH MUCH better game than Prototype..yes i have played both. I think it comes to a point when they should put out games on all the systems that are technically able to play them...I mean it doesn't make sense to put Prototype or Infamous on Wii because it would become another dumbed down port, but I think Killzone 2 would do well on 360 and Gears of War would do great on ps3...as far as sales go. I mean by now more core gamers have whichever system they are going with for the remainder of the current gen, so I don't get the exclusivity either.
@ 10679 The only reasons xbox 360 sales are still high (and yes i had bought three of them before so I am not just a fanboy ranting)....is due to the Continued hardware malfunction it has. Once people get invested in a console with paying for xbox live, extra controllers, games, accessories and their system goes kaput, then they are left with few choices other than to go out and buy another system hence inflating xbox360 sales...plus unemployment rates are high as unemployment has gone up, which means that people are spending less up front, which is sad because 360 is obvious the cheapest sticker price, but if people could see the value of other systems with built in wifi and other extra features they could save up for a system...whether it be the minigame hound Wii or a PS3. i know everyone will hate on this because they know it to be a Fact.
By now everyone knows why sales sink in the middle of the year! ...or at least they should...all the game companies fires their biggest guns in the fall closer to Christmas time in order to gain more profit (which overall is good for the companies, but bad for gamers; however, this puts numbers down middle of the year, especially if the biggest title is Prototype..i tried it..eh, an ok rental at best. On top of that not many companies want to compete with the Annual money drain called ea sports games in the july/august months...it still puzzles me why Millions spend money on the same game continually EVERY FCKUING YEAR!...Madden come on do something NEW...yes, i get it. it is football and not much changed in the sport, but there are many directions you can go with improvements...that have been brought to attention by fans that will undoubtedly fall upon deaf ears again this year...Anyways looking forward to Bioshock, CODM2, MUA2, FFXIII (if it ever comes out), and Assassins creed 2...Which will undoubtedly blow up the charts.
alpha commando....and by the look of infamous and killzone sales It looks as if ps3 owners dont understand the concept of a good game lol
LOL all the sony fanboys are in denial. i guess they can't accept that the 360 from time to time keeps dominating the ps3 in terms of hardware sales and software sales and on top of that the 360 is supposedly " technically" inferior to the ps3 :D .
Real gamers play as many good games as possible. This usually means owning consoles from more than 1 manufacturer. Hence real gamers don't tend to fit the definition of being a fanboy.
Fanboys ARE real gamers. we play to win. And 360 are beating the ps3... if it werent for fanboys, we'd be still playing PONG till the year 2020... there would be no sony, MS, nintendo.... non fanboys can go to HELL becos i hate playing pong for the rest of my life
Proud 360 owner. what is wrong with that? imagine if there were no 'fanboyism', just like watching a one team baseball game, having one tv channel, a one car race, eating at one place, sony charging you $1000 for the ps3, how dull is that? But after all we have choices and i choose the 360 over the ps3 becos its better. better games, better graphics, better values. its a common fact. The 360 is better in every way, more have said in here and every where. But my team (360) is over your team (ps3) like every months. the ps3 is STILL distant third, you can't argue with that.
well no wonder thers never a lot of games out in the sumer but come sep till xmas thers loads out has allways
I'm so bored to see fanboys war... it's always the same peoples, with the same arguments... Seriously, why it is so hard to unite us? We could focus on finding good argument against idiots like Jack Thompson! But no instead we got fanboys with their "my console is better than your!" attitude, trying to find "good" arguments to flame the others... Fanboys aren't real gamer, they are losers.
Oh my T-razor1 ............ If you really desperate for first party Sony`s games why don`t you just get a PS3 rather than speak like a businessman ? From the way you speaking clearly you only have 360 ........... And you still don`t know the purpose of first party game don`t you ? The purpose is to sell console. Just like Halo, Mario and other first party games ........ Sony`s 1st party game dev doesn`t complain about sales as long as Sony helping them financially ........... Not like you ............ Complaining too much.
It really is getting to the point where every exclusive PS3 development house should just go multiplat. I just don't see how it's good business sense to develop exclusively for the PS3. Think about this. If you just worked your ass off developing Infamous only to find out that a game like Prototype for the 360 just took one month to outsell your game which has been out for about a month and half how would you feel? Infamous May sales: 175,900 Infamous June sales: 192,700 Infamous May and June combined equals 368,600 Prototype (360) June sales equals 419,900 Another way to look at it is the launch sales for 360 Prototype (June) doubled the launch sales of Infamous (May) It's just hard not to ask yourself what the Infamous numbers would've been like if it were also on the 360. If I were a CEO I would either develop for all systems or develop exclusively for the 360. Sorry.
Why xbots here think Infamous should be multiplat? It`s a first party game you kids ........ It`s your loss for having only 360. Quit complaining .........
@Acejoel99 LOL. Preference is bias. You prefer the PS3. That's your personal bias commonly referred to as "taste". Please don't try and pass of your opinion as unbiased. You can really only do that with FACT.
@izmickey What you've said is just your opinion not fact, in which case what makes you anymore "right" than SalarianChemist?
Why are there so many xbox360 fanboys. Don't get me wrong PS3 fanboys are annoying too but to be honest there are WAY more xbox360 fanboys so i find the xbox fanboys like a plague. Xbox360 are the most annoying kind because there are so many of them. SalarianChemist may sound like a fanboy but he is mostly right, except about xbox360 games being the highest quality because console wise, PS3 has already demonstrated in having the two games(MSG 4 & Killzone 2) with the highest quality in graphics(console) and it's exclusives are growing. They are both great systems, its just that xbox360 has the upperhand. To say PS3 or xbox360 are garbage, you have to be either in denial or an idiot. The PS3 is a better value for price than the xbox360 elite because if you Pay $400 for the xbox elite you still have to pay for xbl and it still doesnt have wifi or blu-ray, this is not an opinion to be debated on, its a fact. Does this mean PS3 is better, no it doesnt because someone might find the xbox360 more appealing. Main point is...to each his/her own.
People complain about PS3 price. You just dont understand value, the console is a steal at its current price. You get better visual power than 360. You get a built in router ($99 for 360 one) You get a blu-ray player (a $299 value) You get more Gigs (PS3=80------360=60) Games are the same price regardless that they come on blu-ray discs, allowing for multiple times more memory. You get tons of exclusive games that not only are only on the PS3, but can only fit on blu-ray discs. You get six-axis technology in the controlers. You get free online (about $50 a year on xbox) Right off the bat to make the 360 match the PS3 it would cost......$299 (xbox standard) $99 (router *unless you dont play online*) $299 (blu-ray player) $50 annual subscription= $749 and that dosnt even take into account the countless years you will have xbox live, so every year you own a 360 add $50. And even than PS3 has 20 more gigs. So please stop complaining about PS3 price, instead you should be complaining about 360's price. And when PS3 drops to $299 (which it will this year) The PS3 will be like a gold mine of value. Not to mention that PS3 has a sizably larger line up of quality games coming compared to all other consoles. The hassle of having to ship your 360 back to the manufacturer multiple times because they die more often than flies with cancer. I own all the consoles of which I bought my 360 than my wii than my PS3 so I bought my PS3 after being introduced to all other consoles. Not biased.
Infamous Shouldn't Be Multi.Wtf Every Sony Exclusive Has To Be Multi If It Doesn't Do Good In Sales.
PS3 does not need anything. Hey if people can't afford a High-Powered game console such as the PS3, they should stick to kiddy stuff like the wii.
Playing Xbox One games on somebody else's console will also require a check-in every hour. Full Story
