I hope this starts making other devs do this. Would love to see some Full Multiplayer game downloads for games like Halo, Battlefield, and CoD where people only play multiplayer.
[UPDATE] Sony bringing stand-alone level-capped multiplayer client for last year's sci-fi shooter to PlayStation Network next week as free download; full experience to be available for $15.
Sony will launch a free-to-play stand-alone version of Killzone 3's multiplayer component next week, the company has revealed.
During the most recent PlayStation Blogcast, Sony revealed that players will be able to download Killzone 3's multiplayer component for free from the PlayStation Store. All the game's maps (including downloadable content maps) will be included with the download, as well as the game modes Operations, Guerrilla Warfare, and Warzone.
The free version of Killzone 3's multiplayer segment is not without its restraints, however. Players will be allowed only to reach the level of Sergeant 1 with the free trial. Players can purchase the "full experience" for $15, which grants players a 24-hour double XP bonus, free unlock points, the ability to create clans and custom games, and access to the Botzone mode.
The Killzone 3 multiplayer stand-alone version will launch next week on the PlayStation Network.
[UPDATE] Developer Guerrilla Games has shared additional information concerning the Killzone 3 multiplayer stand-alone version on its official website. Most notably, the company revealed the stand-alone multiplayer version of Killzone 3 will be out next week.
The Killzone 3 single-player campaign is not included with the download, nor have plans been announced to sell that portion of the game separately.

I never did pick up Killzone 3, too many good games came out at once. To be honest though if there's a platinum edition out there in the world I may buy it. The game looks absolute quality!
When I got my PS3 last year, Killzone 2 & 3 were some of the first games I bought. Didn't like them very much though. I thought the gun swayed around too much when you turn. It's a very well done game. I just didn't like it that much. And a move like this gives the impression that they're desperate for more players. There's already a multiplayer demo. If people wanted it, they'd buy it.
wish people would be more interested in kz2 multiplayer. it was more realistic than what you call realistic shooters of today.
Never played Killzone since I don't have PS3, but this is a pretty good idea. I would like to see more developers doing this.
Considering the success of games like WoW, that do basically the same thing described here (you see the ads everywhere, I'm looking at it now, WoW F2P up to level 20, etc), its not a bad idea. People who were on the ropes about KZ3's multiplayer, have a chance to try it out and can buy it at a decent price.
So wait, those of us who have the retail copy of the game get the dlc for free, right? That would draw me back to it, o you bet it would. @iilsSueZ Actually, it means quite the opposite. It means GG knows they did a good job with it, which they did. They give that first hit for free... Then when they've got you hooked, you buy it. If I didn't own the retail copy, you can bet I'd pay for this.
This pretty much shows GG know they failed with KZ3 multiplayer. KZ2 was my favourite game of all time. KZ3 was by far one of the worst.
That's awesome now I can play Killzone 3 with friends while I wait until I can afford the full game :D
great idea, great online. I might download it to see the extra maps. it'l have to wait though because I'm playing Dark Souls now.
My jaw hit the floor when I read the title and the first two paragraphs. Sounded way too good to be true. This is basically a slightly constricted demo with no expiration. It's a good idea, although players will essentially be paying $15 for the ability to level up.
The idea of letting people try the dlc is good, how many times I've downloaded content in the past and regreted it.
The thing I really loved about KZ2 and KZ3 MP ( played it at my friends place ) is that the MP really feels unique with classes, objectives, guns etc. It actually tries to be its own thing instead of trying to Rip-off COD MP like Crysis 2, Homefront etc. Will definetly check this one out. and also any game that doesnt try to become like CODs MP is a huge plus for me. Thanks SONY and Guerilla Games.
I saw the headline before seeing the update and I damn near had a heart attack. Keep outta my actual games F2P
Having played the game for a quite sometime, I'd say 15 bucks for the MP is pretty damn good. You're right, it's not exactly free but really, once you've played the MP, you'd see that 15 bucks is about right.
This is cool....wait a second...is this some sneaky disguise of an online pass? I'm kidding, I own KZ3 and thought the multiplayer was solid...everyone should check this out, especially for free.
So judging by the value Sony put on the multiplayer alone...Call of Duty and other fps campaigns would sell for $45 on their own? lawl.
Just when I thought companies couldn't get any dumber, they go and pull something like this... and totally redeem themselves! This is a genius way of bulking up server populations.
honestly, i dont know why this news isnt getting anything but positive comments. i own the game, and this seems like a pretty damn good deal to me
Why all the pathetic thumbing down of people calling it a KZ3MP Demo? That's what it is. If you want to buy into this "F2P" rubbish they're trying to put over on you, fine. But this is not a free version of KZ's multiplayer, its a trial of it. Free does not = "severly crippled, but if you buy it you get the whole thing..." No. Not so. Now I'm not opposed to this free trial, but lets call it what it is. Because it is not the KZ3MP experience for free
anyways this doesn't effect me since I already own the full game but it is good for the people that haven't experience kz3 since it is an awesome game
@RiP_ili that is what most mmo are doing when they say it is f2p limiting what you can do in the game and you have to pay to get the full experience and age of empire is the worse of them all cutting out most of the game unless you pay the way overprices for it guess that what you get when M$ is the publisher
.... I'm sorry, what? is Killzone an MMO now? Oh god no... Last thing we need is AAA games taking the freemium route..... No, no, NO! This is stupid, is the Killzone 3 multiplayer that dead?!
Free To Play? Plz stop lying to us. If you have to 'pay $15 for the full experience', call it what it is... a Demo.
The important question, if they get the DLC for free, then if I buy the game can I get the DLC for free? This is a serious question, as I'm thinking of getting it with a Move bundle.
Wait, I'm lost. Was it that when KZ3 first came out you had to pay extra for multiplayer, or did that only apply if you bought it used? Although I do not own a PS3, KZ3 looks really fun!
I bought KZ3 recently and the Multiplayer is awesome! If you don't have the game I highly recommend getting this because frankly the SP is boring and short - the multiplayer is where KZ3 shines and 15 bucks for the entire experience including all the DLC is a steal :) Kudos Sony
I was actually quite impressed they'd give it away for free but it does state you can only reach a certain rank, sergeant 1 (not sure how far that is in) so it's essentially a free trial which you pay to unlock. Nice idea to let people try the MP for free at least.
Well now, this is surely an interesting....er....thing to put as F2P. I mean, who here evert thought the multiplayer component of a game would go F2P?(And btw, I refer to games with single player content as well, so I'm not counting all those F2P MMOs + TF2 which are definitely Multiplayer only)
