League of Legends gets beta Mac client

Long-awaited Mac client currently works only on the Public Beta Environment; an open beta will follow.

The long-promised Mac client for League of Legends is now available in the game's Public Beta Environment. An open beta, allowing for play on the game's main servers, will follow.

League of Legends' Public Beta Environment is a separate build of the game which allows players to test upcoming versions of the game before they reach the main servers.

Posting on the Riot forums, associate producer Steve "Udyr" Mieczkowski said that "Riot engineers re-wrote a lot of the underlying game engine so that both PC and Mac platforms share the same code base and assets." Once the Mac client is out of testing, "Mac players will receive all future features, bug fixes, and new content at the same time as PC users."

The Mac PBE client for League of Legends can be downloaded directly here. Riot has also provided instructions for accessing the PBE.

Last week Riot announced the start of its qualifiers for Season 3 of the League of Legends Championship Series.

League of Legends currently claims to have around 12 million daily players.

I don't understand why this is a big deal.  I've been playing LoL for about a year on my three year old MacBook Pro and it runs totally fine, even with Keynote and Pages running in the background.  Sure, I can't play Battlefield 3 full graphics here but who cares.

People who think macs cant be used for gaming are idiotic. Not only was LoL on Mac before but http://www.boompje.net/download/ilol...already has made a mac client. The reason they arent used for gaming is because its a smaller market, and most people dont get a mac for gaming. This PC elitist stuff is getting old, and shows the immaturity of the ones who constantly berate macs. Just because you cant afford a mac doesnt make it a bad machine. Morons...

@Leeric420 Gosh, people who think macs aren't ideal gaming rigs are idiotic--and they're immature to boot!  I don't own a Mac, I never have, and it has nothing to do with being a moron, thank you.   I just don't believe the premium price is good value for my money.  You Mac people are insufferable.  Who's the elitist now, buddy?

@Pinman_DS9 @Leeric420 I own a mac, and when I buy a laptop in the near-future, it won't be a mac. Yes it works great. Yes it has a beautiful design and YES till date there's no screen that beats mine in terms of resolution and colour contrast. But seriously, they are EXPENSIVE! And as a player I prefer having a PC, and a powerful one to play games as I please, not having to worry to Reboot and turn Windows on, or get a virtual machine.

Macs are good overall in their OS, they are fast and there's a load of shortcuts and user friendly ways to use it that it works great, but their pricing is really what push me of from buying another.

@Leeric420 It's not about macs being good or bad compared to a pc, it's about apple charging a ton of extra money for the brand when you can get a pc with the same specs for a lot less if you know where to look.

Macs aren't built for gaming. The are great for designers and can run CAD/Vectorworks and audio programs wonderfully. Its an unfortunate part of being a Mac user.

Problem is, and it's the same one Guild Wars 2 suffers from, there are only 5 or so Mac's capable of running these clients. Unless you wanna upgrade, but that's a lot of money to throw on Mac's. MacBook's that are made in the middle of 2010, can't play any of these without suffering. Mac's just aren't viable gaming platforms, not as they are, and people are wasting time trying to cater for it.

@JustArtificial Macs.  Not "Mac's".  Also, my macbook runs LoL just fine at 60fps and has held up perfectly now for 3 years, which is more than I can say for any of my previous laptops.  For laptops/mobility, there's nothing better.  I have Windows 7 installed and I can't handle using it on here.  Love it on my desktop, but god, it just doesn't work for a laptop.
