Mario & Sonic hurdle 3.28 million

New London Olympics minigame collection goes triple platinum; Sonic Generations and Virtua Tennis 4 also move more than a million copies as Sega's revenue and profits fall.
Mario's latest trip to the Olympics was popular with gamers. As part of Sega Sammy's latest financial report, the company revealed that Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games has sold 3.28 million copies between the Wii and 3DS versions.
Other million-sellers on Sega's resume were Sonic Generations at 1.85 million and Virtua Tennis 4, which sold 1.04 million copies. Other titles called out by Sega were Football Manager 2012, which sold 710,000 copies, and Yakuza: Dead Souls, which moved 550,000 units.
The most lucrative platform for Sega software sales during the year was the Wii, which accounted for sales of 3.05 million titles. This is compared to 2.45 million for the PlayStation 3, 1.79 million on the 3DS, 1.54 million on Microsoft's Xbox 360, and 1.1 million on the PSP.
As for Sega Sammy's actual earnings, for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012, the firm's Consumer Business (which houses its game division) posted revenues of ¥85.6 billion ($1.1 billion), down 3.6 percent from the year prior. The Consumer Business division posted operating losses of ¥15.1 billion ($189 million) for the year, a marked decrease from an operating income of ¥1.9 billion ($24 million) recorded a year ago.
In total, Sega Sammy recorded revenues of ¥395.5 billion ($4.96 billion) for the year, down 3.6 percent year-on-year. Profits came in at ¥21.8 billion ($272.7 million), down a significant 47.4 percent from the ¥41.5 billion ($519.1 million) tallied a year ago this time.
Looking to its current fiscal year, Sega Sammy is predicting net sales to surge 18.8 percent year-on-year to ¥470 billion ($5.88 billion), with net income ballooning some 83.3 percent to ¥40 billion ($500.37 million) for the year ending March 31, 2013.

I enjoyed the Beijing game but this one sucked. No championship or mission modes, all you can do is play each event individually or the pointless London Party.
It isn't Sega who is losing the money but the incompetent Sammy who keep dragging the company down. I can only hope one day Sega breaks the merger.
Obviously there doing something wrong if they're selling that many copies and still losing money.
2 Like This my friends is what's wrong with the industry listen to the amount of copies pushed how do you take a loss on that? Companies really need to go back to the drawing board cause there game plan isn't working out, and no the answer is not the used game market. it's spending so much money that even when you have three platinum games u still lose money.
1 Like I remember the article posted up about sega's losses a few months back. What a shame. It's been a long run but they should just join Nintendo and work as their developers. Nothing wrong with that.
Funny how first time Nintendo worked with SEGA, they released a sales bomb called F-Zero GX, which is an excellent game and critics praised it, but alongside those bad sales, Shigeru Miyamoto even hated it.
With their second try with Mario and Sonic, which isn't as liked as much as GX was, it sells much better...
Think about it...if some dude from the early 1990s somehow traveled BACK TO THE FUTURE!! and came to 2012.........
He would probably get very displeased, and forward a very strongly worded and angry letter to Sega's CEO explaining his displeasure of seeing Mario and Sonic star in the Olympics together, before being ignored, forced to confront the CEO face to face, before shouting "WELL YOUR MOTHER IS OF SCANDALOUS REPUTE, GOOD SIR!!" after a loud and uncomfortable argument.
Those sales are exactly whats wrong with the Wii and its target audience. Most real games on Wii sell like crap but generic mini game collections sell well. 3/4 of the top selling Wii games are casual garbage.

@burgeg It's Mario & Sonic at the London games, of course it's a big deal in the UK. :P Plus, they like Sega games more than the US does anyway.
I need to quit bsing around and get M&S at the Winter Olympics for DS. I heard that one rocked.
2 Like Hope Sega gets out of the hole it seems like getting lately. The only publisher coming out with true IP every year. Vanquish,Bayonetta,Mad World,Resonance of Fate,Binary Domain etc...
Yeah Sega bid on a ton a new IP this gen, unfortunately most simply just didn't pan out as the middle tier market has been dying this gen in the wake of AAA and indie games.
@R2C25 the reason they are in the whole becouse they didn't market those awesome games and it was word of mouth that made them hugh and sega doesn't really support thier games after release..
Sales for the other games sound about right, but Mario Sonic London 2012 only did 3.28 million? You sure? Seems like it would have sold more than that considering the insane amount of tv advertising the game got , in the UK at least. Plus I'm pretty sure I regularly see the game in the top ten in the UK charts even today. I dunno. Maybe it isn't as popular in the rest of the world or something.
It seems like there are some typos in this article with the millions and billions in the second to last paragraph.
Only in the corporate world does making 272 million dollars profit seem like you are losing your edge ::sigh::
