Mass Effect 3 beta leaks online
Xbox Live gaffe exposes single-player, multiplayer details for BioWare's upcoming sci-fi role-playing game; Microsoft issues cease-and-desist order.
Mass Effect 3 is due for release on March 6, but over the weekend, a number of gamers got an unintended advance look at BioWare's next sci-fi role-playing game. On Friday, the client for Mass Effect 3's beta surfaced on Xbox Live, offering gamers a look at the single-player and multiplayer component of the upcoming game.
BioWare acknowledged the leaked content shortly after its appearance online, saying that a Microsoft employee inadvertently published the beta for those who had signed up to test the fall Xbox Live dashboard update.
"We'd like to stress that the leaked code is in a rough, unfinished state and was not meant for public release," BioWare producer Jesse Houston said. "The content is not final and is not reflective of the quality of the finished, polished game due for release on March 6, 2012 (March 9 in Europe)."
Houston also addressed the aforementioned new modes, saying that they are "still in the early stages of development and will receive considerable iteration and refinement." He also emphasized that Mass Effect 3 will support ways to play the game that cater to those interested in just the story, just the combat, or both.
And though BioWare's response to the leak could be seen as conciliatory, Microsoft's was decidedly less so. After the aforementioned NeoGAF thread disclosing details on the beta was deleted by forum administrators, a second thread questioning this move was created. As part of that thread, NeoGAF message board owner EviLore disclosed that his team had decided to remove the original, spoiler-rich thread after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Microsoft.
"We've gone through this sort of thing hundreds of times, and sometimes action is taken and sometimes it isn't, based on the circumstances, but it's dealt with internally," EviLore wrote. "This time Kagari apparently decided to leak news of the incident on Twitter without consent after I notified the team of what was going on, so now we have a scandal (perhaps justly) and now everyone gets to ask why I'm so Soft On Terror."
"It's handled in an informed manner in the best interests of the site on a case by case basis and is not up for debate or pending approval of a committee," he continued.
EviLore did not post the contents of the cease-and-desist letter sent by Microsoft and had not responded to a request for comment as of press time. A cease-and-desist letter serves as a warning of sorts, and it is not a formal notification that legal action has been initiated.
One way in which a cease-and-desist action would be enforceable is if the individual who posted the content were directly responsible for its initial leak. Alternatively, if the leak violated intellectual property rights by exposing trade secrets, a court could order its removal. The cease-and-desist letter does not need to state the grounds for the legal action.
BioWare expects to officially release the beta to a wider audience in January. Microsoft had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.
Nothing can compete with KOTOR, ever
Lol Action Mode. Still waiting and excited for the game, but this just confirms to me that the 'choice' Bioware offers in its stories is still just an illusion. KOTOR was deeper than this, and it came out, what, eight years ago? Oh well. I'm still happy to be able to finish the story.
@TheLawLord Wait, so you have played the game and perused all the available options, and their multiple outcomes? Or is your opinion presumptions with no basis? you say inevitably, but I've yet to see any proof to solidify this statement.
ME2 was meh, so I will be playing Diablo 3 when this releases. Maybe a rental depending on the player reviews.
I gotta be honest, this doesn't really affect anyone's playstyle. From ME1, there's been a neutral set of dialogue choices that didn't affect Paragon or Renegade scores, or alter the final gameplay outcome. They're not reinventing the wheel here. They're just streamlining the process. Most of us posting here, are gonna play the game in the way that caters to our playstyle, and that's what it should be. Doesn't mean we don't have the option to play through it differently again later on.
Holy ****! Can't ******* wait!
@Volgin The problem with options is that when there are too many, the game lacks focus. This set of options particularly angers me because it means the story will almost inevitably stay on a superficial level. That is because they need to keep it that way to ensure the "action mode" players are brought along for the ride. Yet the ME series at conception was supposed to be about a tightly written RPG story where the player could meaningfully affect the details later on. Therefore, the mere existence of the options does affect my game experience. It's frustrating because that sorry excuse gets trotted out every time a developer suggests a poor set of options. Unlimited choice is not the holy grail of gaming. I'm sure ME3 will get stellar reviews because of its high production value, but it has abandoned its space opera concept for a more Halo-esque experience. That's never what Bioware has been about, and I'm sad to be witnessing a slow death of what they used to stand for.
Wish I would have gotten this. An hour would have been enough.
RPG Mode?
The MP is actually not a bad idea. After the 9 times I finished the second mass effect I thought that it would be nice if it had a horde mode like gears of war to have a change for a while.
One of the reasons IMO I dont want MP in ME3 is because of the gameplay. The main focus of the ME games were always about the story, characters, dialogues etc. The shooting aspect of the game was just there for you to do something throughout the game. To have a good MP shooter your shooting mechanics has to be perfect ( for example UC 2 and BF3) and for a game where the shooting and cover system is clunky I dont think this game needs a MP component.
I don't quite understand why people are mad about this. If you want the same "mode" as ME1/2 then just play RPG mode. You get to choose for a reason.
@TheLawLord It's called an "option" for a reason.
Evilore is afraid of having NeoGaf seized by microsoft. Unfortunately, the courts have abandoned the notion of freedom of speech and will always side with multi-mil corporations. Remember, Activision was able to seize the MW3 website under judicial rule. Cease-and-desist means microsoft is playing nice for now.
I won't touch the story spoilers, but the new gameplay modes are an utter disgrace. Giving people the option to play through without dialogue options? In the case of Mass Effect, that truly is selling your soul. I never thought I'd see the day when Bioware actually disgusted me.
I'll wait till January to play as a Salarian Vanguard!
I hope the PC version have compatibility with pad this time, thats some of the good reasons to play in PC, you can play L4D with wiimote or Mario Kart with 360pad, PLants vs Zombies with a waccom, etc.
@DrKill09 wow just.....wow i think that i will spawn 5 krogan in your house now
@EPaul Oh ok I see what you mean now. I haven't played on a PC since I got a job in IT. Switch to consoles soon after.

Its quite obvious EA leaked this beta on purpose, just like Crysis 2.
What's with MS and these problems they have with stuff leaking out? BioWare/EA just cant get the ship righted as far as marketing goes on this game. The fiasco with FemShep, the MP announcement and now the beta and plot details leak. Its all gone wrong. I believe it will ultimately end up being a great game and strong finish to Shepard's story. But this has one been one rocky ass road and they still have 5 months to go.
That sucks...some ones loosing their job.
Free advertising or a real news story?
I gotta admit ME2 is the best game I've ever played in my whole life.. I just can't wait for this with the ability to control some enemies, jump, roll, use the omni-tool as a blade, larger scaled maps and more upgrade options...
Mass Effect 2 what by far my favorite single player game I have ever played in my entire life. If you never played any of the Mass Effect games, please just buy them. Best single player EVER!
Of all the places to issue a c&d to, NeoGAF? I hope they don't have a heart attack when they look at someplace like the imageboard that is apparently censored here
this leak only makes me even more to have the ability to make time flow faster :D.... i'm just to curious to see what squad mates will return to the series (i really hope to see again Garrus and Legion they are my favorite :P), which will not and what new squad mates will be added :D also i really hope the Normandy SR2 will get some new crazy upgrades also curios how the Joker - EDI relation will evolve :) and many many other things.... and as far the new story progression modes i'm not worried at all from my point of view it just makes the game more attractive to a lager gamers groups, still i will always probably suggest playing in RPG Mode ( but maybe that is just the RPG Lover in me) and hope they will add and a Nightmare Mode :D
come on ea why dont you start selling the beta version of the games dont leak them u morons..
@santinegrete We can only hope for the best man.
Marketing. Every triple A game coming from EA needs to have a beta leaked.
@Valen_Ca I know, and that's a shame. I just don't understand how BioWare lets EA do whatever they want with their title. Not selling this game on the biggest digital distribution service is strange, to say the least. The publisher should do whatever it can to sell as many copies as possible for the developer's sake. It is obvious that EA tries to push Origin in the expense of Steam, which only hurts us gamers, the developer and the competition.
yay im getting half a game I want for fool price ! F EA!
@Jedimg but they are making me pay for it !
@ainars1239 having multiplayer in a game doesn't mean the single player mode is gonna suck, don't know why people keep thinking that without even giving the game a chance. Bioware knows the Mass Effect story is the most important part of the game and they want to finish off the series with a bang. Imagine if the multiplayer is the best ever seen in game, it would be the best SP and MP game yet.
Really can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to screeching little teenaged voices hollering "I AM KROGAN" at me through my TV. :\
Mass Effect; ripping off Gears of War, and somehow making it worse. :P
Here's a massive spoiler for you: Femshep is a man, baby!
@rodrover Nobody's making you play the online content.
Mass Effect wasn't much longer than Mass Effect 2. The only reason it was slightly longer was because of those stupid mining missions, where you aimlessly explore planets looking for useless crap (fun, amirite?). And in the end, that only made it slightly longer. Mass Effect did a few things better, though. For one, the story. Two, the leveling system. For mostly everything else? Mass Effect 2.
@SlickMajestic I'm still convinced that people look back on ME1 with rose colored glasses. It is a great game, but to say that the story is drastically longer than ME2 is a stretch. The never ending comments about how the series is getting worse with each title are subjective at best and, in my opinion, just ridiculous. I definitely stand with the ME2 > ME1 camp, but I think most people feel like the story line across the series is what makes the series so amazing. Given that this is the last game in Shepard's story, I would be shocked if ME3 isn't at least as long as ME1. This is their flagship IP... they're not gonna screw it up.
damn online content, now we gona have to listen to those stupid no life ppls: ur noob, baddie and all that stuff
@vengefulwilberg I've asking for that in other sites, too. But I also suggested that it shouldn't have voice-over comms, like Demons Souls coop. And some indicators like Portal 2 used in coop mode. I'd love to see that.
@SlickMajestic get out of my head!
So ME 1 was a very long, deep game but with a ton of flaws and interface problems. ME2 drastically cleaned up the interface and made combat more enjoyable but completely shrunk the game content, length, depth, and story. ME3 looks to improve a little in the interface/combat area again, although not as much from ME1 to 2, and most likely again shrink the content of the game. Except this time we get some weak multiplayer aspects. ME1 was a complete game. ME2 was half of a complete game. ME3? Not looking so good.
story mode would rock..........just joking! (:
well this game is a single player game not a mmo like swtor, imo they should just forget about mp and focus on sp more. yeah mp is nice but not on such games. there are games that are meant only for single player mode like me, da, the witcher, kotor etc and mp games like cod/mw even the old cs (and not to forget mmos) but anyway the game itself is great and i cant wait till is finished ... atm i just managed to buy all the dlc's from me2 so i can finally have my save game files ready for march XD
Oh my god! A developer is giving us more options. Those bastards. You guys need to stop complaining. If want action and story, simply play RPG mode. Not everyone plays Mass Effect for the same reason you do. So deal with it. Also, quit bringing up Dragon Age II. The ME team did not make that game.
Choice is great, so long as it doesn't end up making the game a "jack of all trades, master of none." Unfortunately, that is the most common outcome.
Someone got fired.
