Metal Gear Online shutting down June 12
Konami pulling plug from online shooter this summer; Metal Gear Online shop closing March 21, all expansion packs available for free beginning in April.
Metal Gear Solid 4's online component--Metal Gear Online--is coming to an end. Publisher Konami today announced that on June 12, the online shooter will be shut down for good.
The game's Online Shop will be the first to shut its doors, ceasing operation on March 21. And on April 24, gamers will no longer be able to create and register new characters for the game. Also on that date, Konami will make all Metal Gear Online expansion packs available for free.
Metal Gear Online launched in 2008 alongside Metal Gear Sold 4: Guns of the Patriots and was also available as a separate download in Japan. The online shooter amassed more than 1 million worldwide users.
why is there no bot match or even split screen option !!! can we request to Konami !!!
This is probably the most depressing video game news i have ever expierenced, I have been a hardcore mgs fan since I was about 6. Best gaming series ever, I've been with the mgo community since it started and no other experience can match it, I've put a countless number of hours into mgo and they were so worth it. So until June 12th, all mgo players play hard and strong, I know I will
The sad thing is that I got MGS4 over 2 years ago and never bothered to download MGO because it took so long, well I guess I should go download it now so I can get the packs for free... I'll try to play it before it shuts down otherwise it'd be a pretty big waste of Kojima's time
Hopefully they make a new online experince...
Good. Build a better one thats more than running in circles and headshotting.. A teambased game thats actually team based would be nice.
This is really sad. I've been with MGO since day one, played hundreds of hours. Just got back to it with a friend in the past month or two and it is still one of the best around. A truly unique experience, one that I will never forget. There is nothing like this out there, and it is sad to think it will cease to exist. Hopefully the next MGS will include multiplayer much like this.
lol reading these comments wile listening to the best is yet to come and enclosure makes this really sad
i thought it was cool having online mgs but finding a game took FOREVER!
at least all the expansions will be free so i can try them out
I was online with mgo day 1, met a girl (fairly good looking one at that surprisingly) and obtained a respectable level and skill set... and one night in survival I seen my level drop from 13 to 9 because of unfair team set ups and i actually watched my character simulatedly raped against a tree, I just couldnt play anymore after that ;_; I had no problem going against high skill levels, i found fun in the challenge, but the team setup was its largest flaw and i believe my reason for droping the game... I will miss you mgo but I already mourned you a long time ago
This is why I hate on9 gaming like MMO...
Why?
good riddance dont let the door kick you in the ass..i love mgs but mgonline was horrible and the online community was the worst deal with it
its a real shame that I could not even try it once. It was my friend who owned a copy of the game and we were really exited to try online but he had bad connection so we could never really update the online. I really wanted to try it.... but amazing game nonetheless.
It's a shame as I thought it was an awesome first outing for Metal Gear multiplayer, but I confess I haven't played it in months so I don't think I'll miss it. I'm sorry for those who will.
I used to love playing MGS4 online, but I got sick of idiots making up their own rules. If you want that, make a match, don't do it in quick match! Stuff like no rushing. Sorry if you can't protect your base, that's your fault. The point of that mode is to get the target and get back to base, not kill everyone! Or you can't use high level skills, because they don't have them, even though you worked hard to level them up (and not grinding in a cqc only room or something) Anyway, because of things like that, I stopped playing but I always wanted to go back. I'm really sad to hear it's being taken down. It was so go! So many intrecasies, and Snake VS All was awesome! There is a PC thing called X-Fire (I think), it lets you huck your consoles to your PC and use the PC to make servers. That way you can play games that are no longer officially online, and also play online without Xbox Live. Never used it myself, but it's worth looking into.
Î'm ashamed to say that in spite of my having played and completed MGS4, I have never even so much as started Metal Gear Solid Online up. I probably never will now, but if I had really started to get into the online element, I would probably be fuming at this point.
whats the point of shutting down a current gen game dont even understand
Makes me sad...
Feels kinda early to close it but unfortunately all online games hafta go someday.
yea i saw the news this morning when i logg in, sad news to all us who still play the game
I spent more time signing up to play than I did playing the game lol.
MGO wasn't the most polished multiplayer ever by any means, hell it was pretty broken overall, but damn was it fun. I hope this means that Konami has plans another MGO, because it's definitely something that deserves a successor.
Too bad they made so difficult to register to play the game
I really hope that Konami will come out with MGO2 someday....
We sure had some good times playing the game, didn't we? Getting kicked out of the game at random, the rage quits, the RP farming craze, the CQC EX nerf, box skill leveling servers, codec spamming, the aimbots, the lag, round-end dancing and singing... I haven't played the game in more than a year, but I was hoping it would last longer than this. But with little to no support or updates after the SCENE expansion and the relatively low number of players, I can't say I'm surprised. MGO, you'll be missed.
@ShinjiEx I'm not saying your wrong but your making it sound like gears of war.
MGS4 is the best game I've ever seen, and a true work of art. But I must say I never really cared for the online modes, they felt tacked on and out of place.
Players ruined that game all they did was hide then pop out and use aim bot head shots
It's no longer making money for Konami, I suppose.
it never existed n-e way i remember waiting for that download n did i wait then did i delete junk is junk
i love MGo its the best online fun i had , im sad the real problem was the lag and glitches of the game if the devs would have patch it better it would be the best for everyone. so sad i love i the game and the comunity i even made a real life friend in it. so sad
Im sick of these companies doing this MGS 3 Online was super fun and so is MGS 4 Online now we are being denied of MGO all together. PeaceWalker is fun but the Online is 100 times better om MGS 4 if they dont plan on keeping the servers up forever then dont charge for DLC or better yet dont give us online. Mabey we can have a longer single player
@babyrhinos yeah I was totally unaware this was even in existence until now. Guess it's a bad day when info about somethings closing is more prominent than info about when it was released.
who cares u got MGS4!
Anyone else not know about this game till now? Anyone else pissed as hell right now?
now it makes me want to play even more even though i suck at it
Its sad. I used to play it once in a while... I agree there were to many cheaters and lagswitchers, but the gameplay was unique. Loved to play SNE as Snake or Otacon. In what game can you stay behind a corner and wait for the right oportunity to CQC grab someone? That was just awesome. I hope they are doing this to bring room to the online mode of "project ogre". Well, who knows.
Irs not like if metal gear online is a good online game. So, Nothing wrong with this.
I still play on the 2003 servers for EQOA on PS2 yet they cannot keep the MGO PS3 servers online? Meh
although im sad to see MGO2 go down, i have to admit the execution of the game was terribly flawed. a few problems off the top of my head: 1. barely any moderation of MGO2's community, and those who were taken care of just made new accounts or characters anyway. 2. said community is comprised of k/d whores that manage to be worse than call of duty's and whine more than halo players 3. some sort of schrodinger's cat effect with the physics engine that occasionally makes a ragdoll legitimately in two places at once (noticeable with grenades); find "MGO The Truth About Lag" on youtube 4. as far as i could tell, survival and tournament mode matches consisted of which team can out-cheat the other more 5. you're probably a scrub if you don't use the m4 all day every day (or the xm8 in drebin point matches) that's all i could think of... the game modes were awesome, it was just useless mods and the crappy community that caused this gem's demise
=( i still play mgo, TSNE beats any mode that any other dev can think of. R.I.P. the game I played more than any other game.
How dare they! First you ruined Castlevania and now you're shutting down the online for a current generation game.........my money will remember this Konami.
True... but 1st party can and has extended the life-span for online games. I shouldn't be able to play TMNT '89 and UMK3 because they were removed from Xbox LIVE marketplace. However, online functionality remains in tact. Certain EA games on the other hand were shut down on both consoles because they ran through EA's severs. I think it's better to trust the point company instead of their affiliates.
Thats ashame, I wasnt a fan of how they made you need to create a konami id and a whole other login for this and it got to a point were downloading anything never worked for me for some reason or another. After the first year I wasnt able to enjoy the online.
Hopefully next time (MGS5) the infrastructure around the game is good...i.e. just use PSN you morans. This excellent game was destined to fail because Konami's stupidity (I said it during the beta and I was right). You need a PSN id, a Konami id (which was a pain to create), a Game id, and then finally create a character. And then patches take an eternity to download. And then there was no matchmaking. And the DLC wasn't even on the PSstore (literally have to open up the unstable ps3 web browser). They made it as difficult as possible to just play the dam thing. Too bad cause the game itself was amazing.
So much for trying to get all my friends to buy this for multiplayer.
now there is no other online metal gear game to back up this loss unlike the original MGO when it shut down, we got MGO2.
and nothing of value was lost.
No fair! Only just rebought MGS4, had to buy a new character slot and all just to play online because I couldn't remember my old Konami ID, and now they are shutting the servers down? Ah well, when I get the expansions for free I can just pretend I payed £2.39 for all the characters and the maps.
