Leaked VGA trailer shows Raiden-centric action installment in Konami franchise rebooted as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, with Platinum Games handling development duties.
Metal Gear Solid: Rising isn't even out yet, but it has already gone Platinum. A trailer for the game purporting to be from tonight's Video Game Awards ceremony leaked onto YouTube today, revealing that the long-awaited game is now being developed by Platinum Games, the studio behind Bayonetta and Vanquish.
The trailer--which was pulled from YouTube as the result of a Viacom copyright complaint--shows off a combination of cinematics and gameplay, laying out a story regarding advancements in cybernetics and pitting protagonist Raiden against a similarly cybernetic, sword-swinging foe.
The clip bears the tagline "Revenge with a Vengeance," and even suggests the game has also been rebooted as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. It also lists the game as being produced by Kojima Productions, which was originally developing it as well. No platforms or release date information was given in the trailer.
Metal Gear Solid: Rising was first announced at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo but has been almost completely missing in action since then. Last month, Spike TV executive producer and host Geoff Keighley posted on Twitter that "the truth" about Metal Gear Solid: Rising would be revealed at this year's VGA broadcast.

my reactions towards this are definitely mixed while i can appreciate a paradigm shift in gaming mechanics, i just don't see the relevance of this story wise to the main story. And it's just not MGS so i feel although i admire there enthusiasm to try something new i feel naming it under a MGS title was a dangerous decision as it has revered our image especially new gamers about what MGS is really about
@JJB03 But the thing is there is a reason to bring the Metal Gear franchise in this direction. I'll tell you what it is, it's a completely different game and frankly series from Metal Gear Solid. Which is why they dropped the Solid from it. This is Raiden's story after Metal Gear Solid 4. It seems to have nothing to do with the Solid series save for the fact that it has one of it's characters at the head of it. It's taking it in a different direction because it's a different series. You can't compare this game to the Solid games because it's not a Solid one. Same as you can't compare Resident Evil movies to the games because their only similarity (which everyone knows from the first movie) is that they are set in the same universe. They do not have to be the same type of game. They are choosing to go in a different direction to also appeal to different markets as well as the die hard Metal Gear fans to see if they can create a new series with Raiden at the head of it. Let's face it, most people weren't a fan of Raiden when he was at the head of Metal Gear Solid 2. Now they are taking him in a different direction and I for one am very excited to see where it leads.
They've put rocket sliding from vanquish in this game...this is obviously not a try to make a regular mgs game, they're going for a new game IP
@Miniworrior Kojima has always been itching to make a DMC type game, it was pretty clear where he was going with Raiden the minute you saw him in MGS4. As for Snake there is a pretty big unexplained portion between 2 and 4 on what the heck happened to Raiden (who was pretty much the main character of MGS2) and how the heck Sunny came into the picture and how Raiden saved her. They really can't bring in Snake for that and explain the whole Raiden story without it being essentially two different stories and frankly people would be more pissed constantly switching between stealth and this. You can bet Snake will be in the game but he's not the main character It's a spin-off you can pretty much guarantee they will go back to stealth in MGS5 (Kojima said it wouldn't be made but he practically says that with every MGS game and he's already hinted at it). Don't act like by making a spin-off series that the main stealth based games are dead they're just expanding the series.
I'm sorry but that looks terrible.. We have enough jerk reaction hack/slashers.. I was looking forward to a "faster paced" MG title, however this just looks like a Red Bull infused action game. I'll reserve final judgement until the title is released but I'm not getting a good vibe from this... not at all.

Well, I'll be. And honestly, you're shocked that a combo system is present? Did you expect to flail the analogue sticks for absolutely every attack? Please - there HAD to be a combo system in this and there WOULD have been in the older version of the game. Based on the evidence we've seen from both trailers, the level of sword control you are bemoaning the absence of is still, in fact, present; Raiden dynamically sliced soldiers in slow motion according to the player's control. WIth regards to your criticising the aesthetics of a game that hasn't even been released yet, I kindly suggest you stop jumping to conclusions. If you're desperately hinging your argument on that, you'll only be eating your words when the full game is released. Unfortunately, these message boards do not allow me to choose the exact wording I'd prefer to describe your plight, but "urinating" and "the wind" comes to mind. And as for the title... well, that is a matter of taste, but you cannot deny that it goes with the overall theme of 'Zan-Datsu' - a made up Japanese word created for the conceptualisation of the game. 'Revengeance' may come off as ridiculous, but not nearly half as ridiculous as the majority of people reaching redundant conclusions from little evidence.
Metal Gear was about stealth. I guess stealth got boring or Kojima got lazy. The game looks like it may be exciting, but that still remains to be seen. Visuals is one thing game-play is another.
Kojima has let Mgs down, it seems like there is no more stealth. anyway raiden was always annoying in mgs. they need to bring back snake. he will be the only one who can fix this situation
Looks more like Vanquish or Bayonetta rather than MGS. Was really excited about the trailer in 2010. This looks too over-the-top for a Metal Gear Solid game. I'm not sure how to react to the new direction this game is going. Guess we will see soon enough. :/
It's about time we found out what was going on the MGS:R. It's worrying that Development has moved on from Kojima's team directly though and nothing about the trailer makes me feel better about that news tbh.
Revengeance??? I must say this makes me laugh but I'm a sucker for the Metal Gear games. The dialog on some scenes makes me roll my eyes but I still have loads of fun playing the games! Can't wait for this game to come out!!!!
They should take 'Metal Gear' out of the title and rename it to 'Raiden's Revenge' just like 'Snake's Revenge' which released for NES as a spin-off.
...also i think they could do a good game to use the move controller, if they in fact keep the 360 degree free slicing system of the first trailer.. if this game would combine the hack n slash + quiet super cyborg ninja sneaking it would be perfect.. just as long as youre not forced to do either at certain times - like some games have sections where you need to sneak and sections where you need to kill everyone without choice...
Well they DID change the "Tactical Espionage Action" into "Lightning Bolt Action" so something like this was expected... I just hope they keep the same freedom of choice that for example mgs4 had, to go in guns blazing or to sneak up on people and take them down quietly.. and when sh*t hits the fan, just shoot everyone and run. I would love to sneak up on people quietly with raiden, just to brutally stab a sword through their back, and slice it up through the head. but if it's just hack n slash, i might just read the storyine on wikipedia... :/
2 things . 1. Metal Gear solid: rising has been cancelled. This is another game, called Metal Gear Rising: revengeance. This is now a spin off, not a MGS. 2. This game is mainly being developed by PLATINUMGAMES, not Kojima production. platinumgames, in case u didn't know, was developer of Bayonetta.
well according to Kojimas official twitter it is a metal gear game but not part of the SOLID series this is it's own spin off hence why the changed the name from Metal Gear Solid: Rising to Metal Gear Rising: Revengence he also said that you will have to wait for a stealth game sequel to MGS4 so hopefully he means MGS5

@kcooper_007 Oh, then I guess you missed the part where the original trailer showed full freedom of control over your sword whereas now it's just button mashing combos like any other hack and slash; complete with sloppier animations, cheesy action dialogue, less polished graphics, and a renamed title that a 5-year-old could have come up with. Yup, clearly this was the natural progression everyone should have expected since the last trailer. :/
Ever hear of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?" The MGS series has sold more than 25 million copies. Last year's demo looked different and cool, still maintaining the atmosphere we've grown to know and love even as it introduced new gameplay mechanics. This just looks plain stupid. It's hard to believe I'm going to say this, but "Rising" looks like the first Metal Gear game I won't buy.
There's no doubt it will be a good game, but by God this is NOT Metal Gear at all. *shudders*
I don't know what bothers me the most... the fact that Raiden wears a pair of high heels... or that MGS:R looks like Dynasty Warriors on steroids.. If they change the playable character to GrayFox, I will get it :)
What are you guys talking about. This is totally deserves to be called a MG game. Cyborg ninja, Grey Fox, did battle with Metal Gear Rex back on PS1. There is a precedent for this game going back more than a decade. I promise you it'll be canon to the story.
This does not look near as good as the one show with the watermelon, graphics look different gameplay is way over the top. Still its a metal gear game so if this is the style they wind up guess thats the one i'll play.
Ok do the game it looks good as a hack and slash and its ok use raiden to sell BUT PLEASE DONT USE IN TITLE METAL GEAR PLEASE x(

Guessing this is a cross between, Ninja Gaiden & Vanquish and seeing this isn't a Metal Gear Solid entry in the series, more like a side story, I guess they can go over the top.

So the protagonist is now a cybernetic ninja who can deflect bullets with a sword that can cut through virtually any material. And he can manhandle metal gear? I thought Raiden said it perfectly: "Too easy."
I thought I'd rather burn in hell before playing a MGS game not made by Hideo himself...however- Platinum made Bayonetta which was novel and engaging, despite serious hiccups on the ps3 version. They also made Vanquish which performed flawlessly on both systems and was one of the most underrated games of the year. Platinum is one of the only suitable choices...and I suspect Kojima had to approve. The video shares remarkable similarities with MGS4 (for example, the cut scene with the soldiers filing out of the APC- directly for MGS4) which is sort of good, sort of bad. I hope Platinum is able to infuse some of their own creative strengths without being crucified by hardcore MGS fans like myself! (Though the "time for Jack to let her rip" can be excluded)
It's not supposed to be MGS. It says Metal Gear. It's an action game just like The first two Metal Gear games where. I don't see TES(tactical espionage action) anywhere. Why are you people complaining. Raiden looks really cool. If they make the mechanics work right, I won't mind buying this game.
It is looking more "beat em' up" than when I saw it last. I liked the mechanic of slicing any (or most) objects in halves, or thirds if i want.
