Hey look, a teaser!
Redmond technology titan files for trademark relating to online video game software.
Microsoft is aiming for dominion of the galaxy with an upcoming project, according to a recent government filing. Microsoft filed a trademark application with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) on August 1 for "Galactic Reign." The mark is listed under the goods and services description of "video game software," with a specific mention of "online video games."
As of press time, Microsoft had not returned GameSpot's request for comment on the trademark application.
Microsoft is not the only company to have sparked speculation with filings through the USPTO. Earlier this year, THQ filed trademark applications for "Evolve" and "1666"; Bethesda is seeking to trademark popular Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim dragon shout "Fus Ro Dah;" and Electronic Arts and BioWare are trying to grab "Paper, Scissors, Stone."
Trademark applications with the USPTO do not always mean a game announcement is imminent or will ever come to fruition. In 2010, Activision sought trademarks for a slew of Call of Duty names, none of which have been spoken of to date by the publisher.
EA can have "Paper, scissors, stone"... I always call it "Rock, paper, scissors" anyway.
As long as it's only for a specific name/set of names for a series, it's all good... Once they start letting people copyright anything with the words "The" in it's gonna get silly.
Agreed...Freelancer IS the best open ended sandbox space game I've played...moddable and adaptable...if only they'd just brought it back and expanded it...oh boy! Oh boy!
I loved MS' Freelancer. If they'd release something similar I'd snap it up. I wish they were less stingy with their back catalog and would release Freelancer and others on Steam or GoG.
no one saw this coming, I knew they've been training their space marines through videogames. yes I only read the title.
Someday all the Good names will be copyrighted and it will become impossible to come up with any good new title names.
Said it once and I'll say it a million times, IT IS STUPID TO LEGALLY CLAIM OWNERSHIP TO A WORD OR NOUN. Only exception is if a name blatantly rips off from another franchise.
Is this some greed hunter way for corporations to plant legal landmines under each other?
Next time I play Mario party and I land on a trap space. then hammer bro comes in outta nowhere and pegs me til -10 coins appear over my head, i'll know what to compare it to.
If they said this is the name of Bungie's new project, I wouldn't be surprised, but that's Activision so whatever.
And I imagine MS has been looking to reign supreme for ages. When we advance to the point where space exploration and development is commonplace and corporate ownership of galactic resources becomes every day news...we're so going to see an Armored Core scenario and MS will be a major player.
That's all fine and good, but there should have been some kind of allusion in all of this to something much more auspicious such as references to domination of The Galaxy or something similar. This could have been a bit more ambiguously-accusatory and I think it should have been...
Lets hope this isn't like their reign over netscape again. Lets hope that console online play stays the same and isn't controlled by M$
OHH GOD YAHTZEE WAS CORRECT !!!!
(watch the ending) THIS IS THE FIRST STEP !!!!!
Leaving his secret spacecraft, Bill Gates was overheard saying.. "They will pay the price for their lack of vision!!"
@sodiumpentathol Or 'leaving TO BOARD his planetoid space station' is a better rendering. 'Hey, dad, why are there two moons in the sky tonight?'
EA is trying to patent the phrase "Paper, Scissors, Stone?" RIDICULOUS!!! That's right up there with Apple trying to patent the air you breath.
@Vodoo According to the Apple fanbase, they DID invent said air, though they would never admit that in either case they rely on Apple for breathing, nor would they because they hold themselves so much higher than people who use PCs because they know better.
Your thinking of "Rock, Paper, Scissors".
@ilantis Not according to his bio, which says it started in his garage. I understand that's not the only thing to come out of a garage nowadays...
@moose3469 Even if it is, it will be no less-disappointing a console than every one of the precursors

@Suikogaiden Who says they haven't started making it yet? Just because they haven't said anything yet doesn't mean it's not in development.
@Suikogaiden easy, you pay for it.
Nice headline - for a second there I thought MS was going for actual galactic domination.
All hail to the great Bill Gates!
@megakick Why not, they made two Playstation clones already!
Kind of like how SONY clones Microsoft and Nintendo?
Sony does the same....
@megakick Now you're bringing Sega and Nintendo into this? Good, then you just lost the argument because neither one of the other is Microsoft. Thanks for conceding. Honestly! But which came first, as I mentioned already, XBox or Playstation? Again, thanks for conceding. Stick to one topic will you or just stay out of the argument.
Playstation was suppose to be a Nintendo CD addon.
Wouldn't that make the Playstation a clone of the Sega CD. So tell me who started cloning who?
Windows and Microsoft has been making software for computers far longer then Sony.
Sony is late to the party.
@megakick Which came first, PSX or XBox? Therefore, unless you attribute time travel to MS and assume they somehow reversed things, then you can't clone something that doesn't exist...Right?
@megakick a horrible game MS is going to make, this will lead them into that saying they had before "mircotransactions will be the future of gaming" and now in order to have a fair shot of playing any of these games with "microtransactions" Is going to be not only get the game, if they decide on a FTP model it allows them to say its' FTP but all good items and stuff will be blocked off unless you actually put real life money into the game, tahts fucking sad i thought in games like this after enough time and effort you'd have to abilitly to buy these items from friends and markets now we will probably have more RMAH happening in all these fucking games, fuck ea and fuck blizzard two worst companies in gaming history.
