the author is all acting like hes a "gamer".Have you seen his pic? "oh look at me i wear a headset so i must be a gamer" 'If you can move your hand like this and swipe a screen, your a gamer.' -not true. If you play for fun or play for the community, or play at all, your a gamer. But to let you know, microtransactions WILL ruin gaming. WILL. there is no if ands or buts about it. It WILL crash the industry. What you dont think 100,000 different games all requiring another dollar for another item with get to people? look at the game market on android or ipod. all those free to play games. how many of those actually get paying customers? how many are deleted off the system in two to three days? HOW MANY ARE PIRATED. shit all we have to do is download the game, hack it, and now we have all the items available. The industry is screwed already. I remember when games were 20 bucks. I remember when the games didnt suck, and had a 3 week storyline. Let me repeat that. 3 WEEK storyline. NOT 3 HOUR storyline. If all games get microtransactions, I will officially stop playing games. I already stopped playing call of duty black ops 2, due to the release of a new weapon via dlc. so what now i gotta pay to play with a weapon thats already shown to me and I can already pick up and use without buying it? obviously the gun was in the game from the get go, because its USABLE, by people who didnt buy the dlc. Also, now I have to pay for weapon camos? when did this happen? Nope, Im done with call of duty. screw microtransactions/
COO Peter Moore says in five to 10 years, all titles will allow players to install a client for free, then charge for add-ons; $60 games may survive.
If Electronic Arts' prediction of the industry's future comes to fruition, in five to 10 years, all games will support microtransactions. Speaking to Kotaku, EA COO Peter Moore explained that this business model is similar to real-world retail outlets, like the clothing chain The Gap.
"I think, ultimately, those microtransactions will be in every game, but the game itself or the access to the game will be free," he said. "I think there's an inevitability that happens five years from now, 10 years from now, that, let's call it the client, to use the term, [is free]. It is no different than…it's free to me to walk into The Gap in my local shopping mall. They don't charge me to walk in there. I can walk into The Gap, enjoy the music, look at the jeans and what have you, but if I want to buy something I have to pay for it."
Moore went on to explain that such a change will not necessarily mark the end of big-budget, $60 games. It will, he predicts, lead to industry growth through bringing in new gamers.
"It may well be that there will be games that survive and they are the $60 games, but I believe that the real growth is bringing billions of people into the industry and calling them gamers," he said. "Hardcore gamers won't like to hear this. They like to circle the wagons around what they believe is something they feel they have helped build--and rightly so.
"But we have seen, whether it was with the Wii getting mom off the couch to do Wii Sports or whether it was, more recently, EA Sports Active, where we get females who love to work out, all the things that social gaming did--Rock Band did it, Guitar Hero did it--all of the things that elevated it from being a dark art of teenage boys usually sequestered in the bedroom--that it was testosterone-filled content that everybody railed against--to where everybody is a gamer…if you can move your index finger and swipe it this way, you're a gamer. And that has got to be the way it goes."
Microtransactions in games are nothing new. Valve's free-to-play team-based shooter Team Fortress 2 currently offers a range of items for purchase, as do numerous massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Additionally, Nintendo's upcoming Wii U will support microtransactions.
What a bunch of idiots. To not lose customers just do a good demo or allow a short trial of your good game and charge a flat rate instead of making it so that buying the game in parts is necessary and possibly excessive.`Nobody wants that.
Micro-transactions are filth and any good game developer would know that. The moment new games start coming out with this freemium model instead of a one time initial cost I will stop playing them, and I'm certainly not the only one.
Indie games and crowd-funding is looking much more likely to be the future of gaming to me at the moment, the only people who disagree those like EA, who don't really produce much of their own games, if any, and simply buy over companies to make money for them. Indie developers are a pretty big threat to them so no doubt they will try and squeeze every penny they can till the day they are no longer needed.
@neronix17 so true, already stopped playing cod due to microtransactions for weapon camos and other crap
EA is just another corporation, not greedy but just well a Corporation.
Anyway Not to burst their bubble or in this case sphere of prophecy, but I do believe Indie Gaming is the Future and not Free gaming. And Indie games are something well beyond the understanding of EA or mostly any other Corporation. (Except mabye Valve and....Mircosoft :/ I find this ironic)
Here's to EA (Egotistical A-holes) and pompous douchf*cker who's by the way, a surrogate of two sewer rats. Peter Moore. To sum it up, here's a look at EA.
In case you were still wondering why EA was voted Worst Company in America 2012....it's stuff like this.
In 5 to 10 years, Peter Moore's gonna shave his head n cut off his balls. Also we gonna walk into EA stores, "Browse" their "Free Products" n piss on 'em.
You drama queens are still whining but everyone is going to buy their games anyways, since ME3 you hipsters are obssesed with EA, deal with it or find another hobbie, vote with your wallets (if you people have a job something that i really doubt), as simple as that.
For all the new readers on this article, I just want to point a few things out on what Peter Moore want's to do/happen, Not only does he want Micro transactions in every game, but he also want's to destroy the used games market, because with the micro transaction crap. he can limit your game to just one console but not only that he can make the game free, on all consoles except the xbox Microsoft will not allow free games on their console, If all games are free then there is no need to buy games used, because your not paying anything to get the game also it will also be download only with this model so they won't be making retail games and then with the micro transaction's he can force you to buy each level and weapon or whatever separately.
But that's his dream, in reality world, all gamer's despise him and his nefarious plans will never come true.
Also support the smaller dev's and indie groups their the ones that make the quality titles these day's.
$60 dollars games may survive... downloading a "client"... I'm sorry, but Freemium games, games with microtransactions are a fad and will disappear. For you, insane developers who think that is the way we're heading... I don't think so. We can't stand those kind of games, I think you've just gotten greedy. Nope, what we need is some cheaper games, true you go to GAP, but wait, there's KMART or Walmart, who are cheaper. I don't have to go to the GAP, it's all about variety of price and style of game. You want more business, try lowering your price by $10 to $15 dollars and see what a difference that makes. Plus, more variety.. nothing worse than waiting a game and all the games on sale, suck.
I love that analogy "I can walk into The Gap, enjoy the music, look at the jeans and what have you, but if I want to buy something I have to pay for it."
How about this analogy?
"I can walk into EB games, enjoy the music, buy video games and what have you, but if I want a complete game I have to pay extra for it."
On a scale of 1 to 10 how much do you hate the way E.A treats it's customers.
10 being you would like E.A's marketing and strategies departments to burn in the depths of hell.
Sadly, nothing will ever change the insatiable EA beasts appetite for money. It's all greed / apathy. Their logic is that milking cash cows like Battlefield and sports franchises like FIFA are doing enough to keep them going forever, why take any risks on new I.P's?
At the end of the day EA will lose a lot of us core gamers because we'll look elsewhere for original, compelling, full game experiences, not partial rehashes of the same thing we paid full price for and played last year (looking at Activision too!).
With each decision they nail their coffin closed. The idiots don't realize it yet. The future is outta their hands. Us and all the smaller Indy start-ups won't stand for this shit.
F*** EA, and all their games and Horrible Bussiness deciscions. They go beyond just killing games, they set developer and publisher traits other companies Monkey See Monkey Do.
@MW2ismygame We're getting too vocal for them not to pay attention and change their practices. Let them keep making their shitty yearly rehashes with half the content as DLC, everyone's onto their tricks now. They're killing themselves, but damn, It's like the slowest euthanasia I've ever seen.
That will be the death of the industry. You think these grubby companies are milking us now? Just wait till this crap comes to fruition. Look at the mobile industry. According to a recent Jimquisition, EA was selling single rides, in an iOS theme park game, for $60 a piece!!! IN A MOBILE GAME!!! Everyone should know by now that if EA suggests it, then it's gonna cost us consumers more money for less content. Stick to your $60 theme park rides EA, and keep your grubby hands away from my console.
I can't wait for the free to play Basketball...i mean the type where you can buy a new ball and be on the same playing field, competing with people like LeBron James. You can call it the Basketball Ultimate Shortcut Bundle....
They are already doing this kind of thing with Tiger Woods (Online)PGA Tour 12 for PC. THAT GAME WAS A JOKE!!! Madden makes me even more nervous abouts this kind of thing, I WANT 2K to get back in the NFL, and EA to get back in Baseball, Compitition is ALWAYS GOOD FOR US GAMERS!!!!
EA do you HATE Gamefly that much to say we want to put F2P or should a say P2W a new standard in the way we spend our money and time on gaming in general?!?!
Yay 60$ game and 50$(battlefield exemple) DLC im up to 110$ a game waht a discount...and i need to pay the Internet provider 50$ cuz I busted my DL limit with game that are 50gig of download and guess what I couldnt play it right away cuz the download took 3 days...anyone else see the discount in here. The only way this happens is if gmae price drop to 30$ at launch otherwise gaming will become a very expensive hobby and PC gaming well a 2000$ rig on top of it will make it a rich sport.
How bout a xbox 720 that has the same thing that the pc has now for a model PURE CONTROL of games you have to DL to play. NO opon for USED DISC purshcase, No Option for compitition for the right to download from, you will have to download from GOD, that's what 360 owners call M$es DL "service" their pirces are WAY OVER what other stores have thier games for the 360 at.
@TitanPolaris They would like to but both microsoft and sony both know that cutting out the physical port nowadays is console suicide for the new generation.
I stiil don't trust the big 3 console makers anyway you slice it. Let's start with the current gen back when it was introduced the one big thing that gamers had a bone to pick was backwards compatability with all three, and if you buy the consoles wii,ps3, and xbox the 4gb version there IS no BC anymore. The Xbox 360 also was supposed to have HD-DVD and that was released as a seperate peice of hardware for a very high 199$ pricepoint. So what you say MIGHT be true in the EARLY stages when the new gen of consoles are over 500$, BUT given time and gamers forgetful minds on this current gen on this kind of stuff it MIGHT STILL HAPPEN!! Overall if they can try and suceed in doing this in 2 to 3 years of the next gen of consoles like they did in this gen they WILL DO IT no matter how much we complain about it.
LOL, couldn't agree more, in an ideal world, with all things being equal, we could all pick choose and refuse the content we wanted without worrying about data costs... In reality, we'll be forking out more for the same content..
I see a future where game corporations no longer need to control an empire but simply make fun games.
The ONLY THING I would pay $70 after tax for are games like cvilization (II and IV),Sim City (2000,4),the Close Combat Series one of the first wargames I played that was moddable, Combat Mission Series again Moddable, RPGs like Skyrim and Dragon Quest and even those old rpgs like xenogears (those had over 100 hours in the story!) and moddable in the case of games like Skyrim. So IF you want to get to spend that much money IT HAS TO BE MODDABLE PERIOD!!!
No just overeacting to the pure greed of companies that do this. I'm a ture old school hardcore gamer. I started back on the old NES and now I just can't justify buying new games anymore because A. I'm a SP gamer that likes to cheat on games I've aleady beaten, B. Games that I grew up on are more or less SP driven and not MP driven like now, I hate the idea of ALWAYS ONLINE, C. The Price is over the top in terms of what you get in games these days just look at COD,BF,Madden, and even BioWare RPGs. When I pay good money for a game I want everything that I expect for that pricepoint. For rpgs the story, the amount of hours it has, like paying for a thick book that's the same price as a thin book. Sports games it's all about the cutsomization for me, I'm not that good at Madden and the idea quote Connected Carrers is a BIG TURNOFF FOR ME. I don't want other people spying on my gaming habits and the way I play the game. FPSes I want a good amount hours in SP, for 70$ it has to have A LEAST 70 Hours+. Far Cry 2 may have been a bad game but it was long and worth the 50$ I paid in the end.
i am stoping with gaming, this is my las generation of consoles and games.
I have had it with the dlc misuse and over pricing.
If this goes through EA you will be charging us for every single element in the game. You will get the intro for free yet the ending is a different story.
But on the plus side if a game totally suckes balls u do not get screwed over 60 bucks.
I will go back to the ps2 and xbox. Still need to finish some big games on those.
Microtransactions AKA 60$ Main Client game plus tax, DLC at 5-30$ a piece,ALWAYS ON-LINE even in single player (I HATE THIS TO DEATH!!!) I want my computer gaming sessions to be private not on MYFACE AND TWEETER!!, Future monopliles on cetain gaming platfroms for certain kinds of games i.e. RPGs for Playstation, FPSes for Xbox, and RTSes for PC ALL IMCOMPLETE. OH and let me say this about micros and their "brainchilds" of those CEOs and thier thinktanks, I would NOT BE surprised at all if they charge for A PATCH to FIX their game! Think about this for a monent what is the one thing that gamers on the Xbox, PS3, Wii, and most of all the PC, complain about the most, and rightfully so TECH SUPPORT!! I could JUST imagne a time in the future in the next 10 to 20 years that we will have this model of thinking on those parts. Gamers want a game that works and is playable and those greedy bastards in companies like EA and ACTI, are going to say "oh we will give a playable game BUT you will HAVE to fork over 1$ for the pleasure of this "SERVCE" we provide you for OUR troubles in PAYING OUR TECH SUPPORT GUYS TO DO THEIR JOB!!! If this is the future of gaming I can see more people pirating and buying used for consoles. Even in the America people are POOR AND WANT WHAT THEY WANT i.e. pirating games. GOD I MISS THE DAYS OF $50 GAMES!!!
And I'll never buy an EA game again. The only way to stop corporate greed is to stop supporting the corporation.
But hey, what do you expect from the company voted worst in America last year?
@-Saigo- only morons believe that EA is the worst company of america in that poll, that poll only showed how the gaming community is filled with 10 year old crybabies and whiners.
@alenth Only morons huh? Considering the poll was compiled by Consumer Reports--and EA beat out companies like Bank of America and Wal-Mart--I'd consider your comment the only thing moronic about the results.
Worst in America?? More like in the WORLD!!!
@-Saigo- Expect them to at least change a little.
But nope, they're dead. Dead stuff won't change.
EA don't care about us anymore. All they care now is to make as much money as possible. I understand profit is important, but this is just too much. Free to play games eh? You think you can attract a larger population of gamers eh? You'll have some newbies running around the game and be killed so many times your "new gamers" will just drop your games, they will not buy your items. Why are non-gamers being non-gamers? They might be unwilling to pay or just not interested in games. And what makes EA think that they can just create a free-2-play game and expect people that is unwilling to pay/not interested in games to pay for their items? What EA didn't realize is the population of gamers right now is their profit, and because they are too greedy, they will have significant losses due to everyone just drop their games.
So... just like all the F2P games now? TF2 went downhill because of this. Free games w/ microtransactions would demotivate people from putting much time into making a game.
@Hawkins1313666 TF2 didn't went downhill because of going free to play... there is nothing wrong with TF2 being free as the items inside is achievable without money. I played soldiers with basic weapons and I am still able to be competitive at the same level as others that paid for different items.
But EA's free-2-play vision is different, they will intentionally make the game very hard to play and forces a player to pay for items again and again to beat the game or to compete at the same level as others that paid for items.
EA....must go theyre the cancer of the game industry their practices are spreading to other companies and will lead to the downfall of the gaming industry...Noone should have to point out that Microtransactions in games that had no such things in previous generations is a horrible idea in a recession.
That's why i've quitted buying new games for my ps3 and buying used games. PC games I will only buy if they have a very good backing of mod sites and SDK Tools for those games they sell. That way I can stick it to those companies like EA and say I don't need your DLC CRAP. I can get something that's even better and free. BTW after bills and living expences I only have about 100$ fun money for the month. So in a sence I'm POOR and don't have that luxury anymore after the banksters did what they did to the world. EA if you wnat my money, LOWER your prices and NO MORE monpolies, same with everybody in the Corprate Republic that is Wall ST.
yay for ruining gaming! theres a reason why some microtransactions game suck.and why good games without microtransactions rule.making everything the same is idiotic, diversity matters more than constant income if gaming is truely to be something fun and not a cashcow.so EA shove your dlcs and microtransactions where the sun doesnt shine, I want to play good games and have fun whilst not being victim of a "loan shark"
