Mirror's Edge 2 in production, claims Swedish dev

Rumors of Mirror's Edge 2 have been swirling for years, but according to ngmoco's Ben Cousins, the game is no rumor, but in fact a reality. The Swedish developer and former Electronic Arts employee said over Twitter today that it is "general knowledge" in the Stockholm, Sweden (where DICE is located) development scene that the free-running sequel is in production. An EA representative was not immediately available to comment.
Cousins' tweet was in response to an Official Xbox Magazine report in which EA Games vice president Patrick Soderlund confirmed non-Battlefield projects were in development at DICE. He was asked to justify the "risks" associated with developing games like Mirror's Edge when sequels to established franchises are historically known to sell well.
"Well it depends, right? Maybe it is and maybe it isn't. It's also important for us; the DICE guys are roughly 300 people in the Stockholm studio; not all of them are working on Battlefield things, and that's intentional, because we don't want to become a Battlefield factory," Soderlund said.
The developer added that telling DICE employees that they will only work on Battlefield games for the duration of their tenure would be detrimental for morale.
"The minute we start saying 'you're going to make a Battlefield game for the rest of your life', they're going to go some place else," he said. "So for them to make great Battlefield games there need to be other things for them to do as well. That's why we have people who move around quite a bit. And then obviously we have a boatload of people that just want to make Battlefield because they love it."
Battlefield 4 is currently in development at DICE, with a beta for the game arriving in late 2013. It is also believed that the studio is working on Battlefield: Bad Company 3.

More actual missions and takedown enemies while running and jumping would be a perfect sequel. Shooting enemies is so mainstream, we need sequences such as from the movie Casino Royale's opening sequence. Booyah!
1 Like This is wonderful news. Just please keep the tone of the first game, the beautiful soundtrack that perfectly matched the visual style.
I would like to see the world open up a little bit in terms of variety though. You're a courier of sensitive information, yet you only deliver something once. After that, you're mostly running for your life. It's fun, but a bit more variety wouldn't hurt.
Still adored the first game despite its faults.
@RatingPending I agree, I'd also like them to really develop the themes of dystopia, surveillance states, and the like. The first was a leap in the right direction.
Oh and please no more combat or gun nonsense. Unless they make it amazing. The vast majority of the game (95%) should be free running and escaping combat and running back and forth. I think they should add more populated areas and some more street level running.
Hence the 5 map packs that they probably had ready at the time of the initial BF3 release to allow them to do their own thing. EA isn't some great group of guys all of a sudden letting their best dev make the game they want to make, they're doing the same thing as always with the "Premium" price. Not like I really care though, BF3 is still great without the extra content.

lost a lot of hours ( and knuckle skin) to mirrors edge, getting all the stars made my life both hellish and wonderful.
I loved mirror's edge, the combat was a bit annoying to get in with but that free running made up for it 10 fold
*sigh* Considering i WILL have to open an Origin accout just to play this game... I dunno what i'll do...
I loved the first game. Controls were a little tricky and the environments didn't always act in the way you wanted, but new IP is never perfect. So excited now though!
Can't wait to hear more, Mirror's Edge is one of my favorite games; it was just a little rough around the edges.

Come on, we all what to see that alsome game out. I watch the entire walkthrough of Marrior Edge 1 and thought it was short but still a cool game. So I know that they should continue to work on Mirror Edge 2
1 Like they said they would love to be working on a sequel to 2142. I definitely think they should do that with an updated frostbite engine, but glad to hear bc3 is in the works. Interested to see what direction they take the engine as far as destruction goes. Im guessing we will all need to update gpu's and hardwaree when these games come out.
PLease make the game look more realistic while still being able to see where we have to go easily! I love this game and i think dice should continue to make games that are different from modern FPS games!
I hope it has a really good song to go along with it. I won't lie, the only reason I bought Mirror's Edge was because of 'Still Alive', it's such a good song. The game itself was really fun when it was open and allowed you to just jump around, but man, did the shooter bits and some of the later level designs really suck.

Sorry DICE, but to EA, you will always be a "Battlefield factory." You could walk up to an EA executive asking them about DICE, and they will go "What, DICE? Oh yeah, our Battlefield factory!" :)

@queuing_for_PS4 it WAS a better game. forget the story mode and gunplay. losing yourself inthe time trials is where its' at.
1 Like @queuing_for_PS4 No one said it's one of the best -- this is what fan appreciation of a GOOD GAME sounds like. People want more. Clearly you're an FPS fan -- as the other commenter pointed out, M.E. was NOT a FPS, and the game actually rewards you for NOT playing like one. The simple truth is that the game was original, they took a huge chance, and it's earned all this praise.
That said, the worst thing DICE could do is try to change it with a bunch of online garbage that EA is shoving into EVERY game it publishes...
@Pyrosa @queuing_for_PS4 Sadly i think there will be an online mode for mirrors edge 2. didnt ea say that all of their future games will have online included? i dont like the idea
Awesone news! Mirror's Edge was one of the most original, exhilirating games I've played. Just show me where you want the money, DICE, at least one copy is already SOLD.
Mirror's Edge was flawed gem.The city was stunning to look at,but more freedom to explore it would be nice.
