First-week sales of latest World of Warcraft expansion boosts global subscriber base to over 10 million; Blizzard Entertainment claims "growth across all major regions."
Pandas have proven popular. World of Warcraft's Mists of Pandaria expansion sold 2.7 million units in its first week on sale, boosting the game's global subscriber base to over 10 million users, Blizzard Entertainment announced today.
Mists of Pandaria launched on September 25, and went on sale in China on October 2. Sales figures from this region were not included in the overall tally. However, Blizzard Entertainment claimed Mists of Pandaria helped spur "growth across all major regions."
The debut of Mists of Pandaria was far from the best World of Warcraft expansion launch. Initial expansion The Burning Crusade moved 2.4 million units in 24 hours, with Wrath of the Lich King selling 2.8 million copies during its first day, and Cataclysm moving a series-best 3.3 million on launch day.
As Blizzard Entertainment had predicted in August, Mists of Pandaria helped increase World of Warcraft subscription figures. The massively multiplayer online role-playing game's global userbase surged by 900,000 users from the 9.1 million players reported two months ago.
Now that Mists of Pandaria is out the door, the World of Warcraft development team at Blizzard Entertainment is working on the game's first post-launch content update. The company will share further details on this "in the weeks ahead."
Beyond a new game update to Mists of Pandaria, Blizzard Entertainment confirmed in March that it was already planning the next two expansions for World of Warcraft. Additionally, despite offering a quasi-free version of the game, Blizzard has previously said it has no intention to switch to a fully free-to-play business model, insisting the company is happy with its $15/per month subscription plan.
Mists of Pandaria is set on the new continent of Pandaria and focuses on the Pandaren as well as the monk player class. The expansion pack will also increase the player level cap to 90.

1 Like Cataclysm really backed everyone away from this game. And it's a shame because Mists of Pandaria is everything Cataclysm isn't. To me anyways, it's the most fun I've had since the best expansion of all time, Burning Crusade. No matter what people think of the actual product though, the fact that World of Warcraft after 8 years is still the King and still on top is nothing short of incredible.

GW 2 folk font overcharge and they have a fair no-grind policy of not treating my time like it's worthless, i dont have all day to do tedious grinding, traveling and group assembling.

It's still a great game - but the class imbalance is pretty huge. Rogues are by far the weakest class and mages are stupidly overpowered. This needs to be addressed soon. I don't want to go through another Mage of Warcraft expansion again.
1 Like I think when it comes down to people dont like GW2 because they are used to only going from place to place completing everything there and being done with it for ONE character, because it lasts. In WoW I doubt anyone would have the patience to experience every class to the level cap because of the monotony. I played WoW a little during BC and WotLK and I liked the lock but I also wanted to try the mage,pally,priest and DK....doing the same thing over and over again is not fun. plus pvp in WoW isnt really skill based its gear based....and people use macros thats kinda lame unless ur farming I guess...matt node competition I hated that the most tho. I felt like WoW was more for the singular player experience with scarce chances for community to come together. GW2 is built for "alt-oholics" people that like variety the fact that some people got to 80 means one they have no life or they rushed though everything and didnt try to experience the game. I bought GW2 during beta so Ive had it about 5-6 weeks idk and my highest is lvl 72 with my alts lvl 22 and under. GW2 pvp is completely skilled based and cooperation is built into the system! The fact that I dont need a healer or tank when I go run a dungeon amazing. Now there are flaws with the game glitches and so forth but what is provided it's golden
So I guess what I'm saying about WoW is if you have all your investments in a game sure its going to be difficult to just give it up but.......if u had to start again lets say with this new class at lvl one would you do it all and I mean all again?
Yes, and I have with the pandarians, I enjoy leveling in bg's and with different classes when they come out completly more then anything in GW2. I was hoping and looking forward to GW2, as I am tired of the WOW after 8 years. But WOW is just better. I disagree with everything you say, pvp is much better in WOW imo, my abilities actually work! And world pvp, atleast on my server, is better then anything GW2 has to offer, don't tell me you still enjoy WVWVWVW crap, same old map over and over and over zerg fest clunky crap. I enjoy getting help cries in general chat because some dk is raping low levels in blasted lands, in 15 minutes, what was one guy raping people, turns into 50+ players, and now from other servers too, fighting it out anywhere in a real seemless world with no loading portals between every map, 1000's of skeletons all over the land. WOW has been great lately, no matter where I go, stranglethorn, blastedlands etc etc, there is alot of world pvp going on, and that is something that GW2 will never be able to offer.
@mr-gadgets @Darkskale I played LOTRO for about 2 years, had 6 max lvl chars and loved it. When I did play WOW which I also loved I found that eventually the game loses its spark, same with Lotro, and I am sure after a while I will get sick of GW2 as well. I don't understand people who can play the same game for 8+ years straight.
People people please, I hated when GW2 came out and all the WoWboys stepped in to hate on it. Lets not start another war over mmos. People dont know how to like 2 things at once, maybe it's the economy or something or A.D.D. i don't know.
Man loves competition, it's natural, that's why we play games in the first place but lets not hate on each others joys. Give an opinion or two then lets go log on to our favorites and let it be.
It's funny when you think about it Xbox vs ps3, iphone vs android, Amd vs Intel, Nvidia vs Ati, Mac vs windows. We shouldn't defend these things with so much passion unless you have money invested in the companies stocks, not just bought the product.

@buccomatic GW2 doesnt have pay to win transactions FYI. The only thing they sell in the store are character slots, bank space, vanity items, pets and boosters like xp boosts where you gain more xp for some many hours/days.

These are the type of games your supposed savor and enjoy all the features of, not see how fast you can get to level 80. By the way I have 3XP boosters that I got from achievements and events not the cash shop, and they only last for 1hr i guess Oflow should have made his point clearer. @buccomatic You obviously never touched GW2, because if you did you would know that every single thing in the game shop can be bought with coins, money, gold, copper, silver that you earn in the game. Weather its money won from missions or events or mining ores or selling fruits and vegetables or crafting weapons and selling them to in game merchants or other players. Did I mention every single thing?
Just in case i didn't, EVERYTHING and ANYTHING can be bought without coming out of your pocket.
To top it all off the prices are great. There is no such thing as pay to win in GW2, nothing you buy in the shop gives you an advantage over anyone or thing. You cant use the same microtransactions argument for every MMO that has a shop. Now put the mouse down and go do your homework before you reply to comments.

@buccomatic Ok i swear I'm not typing this with an attitude or anything, your absolutely right about console games being short but I got Gamefly, and for $10 month ($120 a year) I can play up to 25 games. The last game i paid $65.23 for was Halo Reach which was more than 2 years ago. Gamefly just sent me an email yesterday telling me they shipped out Dishonored, i no that doesn't mean a thing I'm just excited to play it. So I am a gamer who spends a subscription fee for games, but i just feel like WoW shouldn't charge you guys as much as they do. Server technology has improved a lot over the last decade and the cost of maintenance has been greatly reduced yet they charge one of highest subscription fees. With 10 million subscribers WoW has to be one of the richest MMO developers in the world. $150,000,000 per month...WOW.
So if and when i do hate on WoW, it's not you guys and it's not the game itself, its those God Damn devs.

@Albaficas That's what people like you do. Outside of Pandas and Pokemon you have no idea what the game actually offers and how fun it is. But that's what people who don't like WoW do. Pet battles is completely optional and so is playing the panda race.

I returned for the expansion. Is it going to keep me playing for years or even months? Probably not, but I'm having a hell of a good time right now.

I was hoping GW2 was that game, especially being free and all, minus internet bill, but I just couldn't stand it, mechanics, graphics, music nothing....I forced myself to hit 80, which I did in one week, and it was horrid. This expac had me playing over 24hours straight before I hit the bed, and I'm still having a blast minus the hacked up talent trees and other abominations blizz has done to this franchise, it still rocks.

5 Like @mariopedroti I haven't played GW yet, but I expect that a proper comparison must factor in the cost to play. For retired WoW players, like myself, WoW's superb quality is undeniable, but it's not quite good enough to justify the subscription fee anymore.
