Naughty Dog readies The Last of Us
[UPDATE] Trailer for Uncharted developer's next PS3 exclusive features father-daughter survival duo fighting humanoid monsters amid the ruins of civilization.
Naughty Dog's next project will be The Last of Us. At the Spike Video Game Awards tonight, a trailer for the game revealed the first details of the studio's next project.
The trailer showed an old man and a young girl struggling with humanoid monsters in a ruined home. The girl's voice-over explains that they have a routine of going from place to place, staving off the monsters in an attempt to survive. They bust out a door and the camera reveals they are in the middle of a downtown area in total disrepair and overgrown with vegetation.
The clip did not show a platform or release date for the project, but it had been previously teased as a PlayStation 3-exclusive title. A teaser site for the game features two video clips. The first shows real-life news footage of civil unrest and rioting, with a voice-over hinting at a US-centric point of view. The second clip, shorter than the first, simply shows footage of an insect in its natural habitat and does not feature any voice-over.
[UPDATE] Following the game's announcement, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann tweeted that he has already sunk two years into developing the title. Sony has yet to offer a date for when the PS3 exclusive will arrive on store shelves.
but this isnt a zombie game
Just another golden day for the PS3! This game looks amazing!!
Wow Sony you keep the great games coming. This game looks great so far
might be time to buy a ps3...
@no_fear_in_hell To even compare the possible outcome of this game to Dead Island means that you have absolutely no idea what Naughty Dog, as a team of developers, is like. You seriously expect the Uncharted series's developer to produce something like Dead Island?? While Dead Island's trailer had exactly 0% to do with the game, Naughty Dog made it pretty damn clear that this trailer is an accurate representation of what the game will be like. Really, just bring DI into this page is an insult to this game and Naughty Dog; they definitely deserve better for the kind of entertainment they produced for the industry so far.
I hate zombie games but I love story and post-apocalyptic worlds, and this first trailer looks awesome if they can make a game that has great gameplay and a great post-apocalyptic world/story I think I'll really enjoy it.... but I said the same when the first Dead Island trailer came out and that turned out to be a generic zombie game, I just hope this is different.
And this is why I bought a PS3. For Blu-Ray movies and PS3 exclusive titles. BTW is that Ellen Page?
No I havenīt. :) Would be a nice read surely...
@no_fear_in_hell Have you read the book? Friend of mine was just telling me about it the other day, apparently the movie is well done, but the book is even more harsh.
It seems like a ripoff of "The Road", a very good movie about a father and son story trying to survive in a post-nucler-apocaliptic world. Very haunting acting work by Viggo Mortensen BTW. But unless they really embrace a moody, grim and pesimistic atmosphere (like the one in Metro 2033), for me this is just another awful zombie game to throw into the garbage... Let's not forget how much anticipation was generated after the Dead Island first trailer, then to discover that game fell flat in so many levels...
I'm not a huge fan of this genre because there are only so many zombie games that are amazing you can only count them on your fingers. However naughty dog has proven to me through the uncharted franchise that they have extreme talent as game makers. If this game has a highly character driven story with clever dialouge and focus on the reletionship between the two main characters they could make a memorable gameing experiance in a genre that is almost as generic as military FPS games. You got me interested naughty dog i look forward to more details on this game in the comming months.
Looks good. Glad to see ND branch out from UC...too many companies get bogged down on just one franchise.
Anyone else think that girl looks like a young Ellen Page? edit: Just read some comments. Evidently, many others do. I personally think this game looks awesome and has tons of potential. Probably a must-buy for me.
Zombie games are the AIDS of the game industry. Empty, dull, bull. This whole sub-genre needs to vanish from this planet. I've tried them all and the all so glorified Left 4 Dead. They are all the freaking same. Easy, dull, if you want to make millions without being creative, do a zombie game. Because the people who end up buying those games are just like the zombies: Brainless.
I own a 360 and this looks NICE! The game I play on PS3 is Uncharted, the best thing about PlayStation 3.
I've always held out hope for two types of games. This is the first, civilization ends like in The Walking Dead and you have to survive. It would throw in elements like your physical appearance deteriorating, medical supplies are scarce, along with ammunition, etc. The second game, something I can't believe Capcom hasn't released yet, would be what Resident Evil Outbreak should have been. You group with ordinary people and are in the middle of a city while the T-Virus takes over. You have x-amount of time to make it out of the city and the horde of zombies increases dramatically throughout the game. You put up make shift barriers, construct home made weapons, etc. but it shouldn't be divided up into scenarios, that's lame. Also, any games like this, unless the door is made out of steel, key searching shouldn't be so strong, most people would just kick in a door. Anyway, that's my hope. Maybe this game will be a start. GTA with survival.
Reminds me of I Am Legend.
The trailer was excellent and the game looks awesome. My only problem is it's just another zombie game, but now with a Uncharted 2 & 3 feel to it. I was hoping for something original. Something in outer space, on a different planet would have interest me more. There are just too many zombie games out there right now. I'm sure the game will be great, but so was Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, Resident Evil and Dead Island. Was looking for more originality. Oh well.
are they using an in house engine or leasing cryengine3 to do this?
@liam82517 Yep. I always get those two mixed up! lol
Actually looks interesting
I see a good chance for a story based co-op.
@COMICNERD11 calm down dude, you still have kinect dance central exclusive for the 360
And thats a wrap! PS3 wins ANOTHER award/event show and IS THE UNDISPUTED KING of EXCLUSIVE GAMES! 30 Day exclusive COD map packs and mario Golf Be damned! SONY FTW
Looks great but i don't know about this post apocalyptic scene, its way too overdone, but i trust the naughty dogs.
great, naughty dog and the girl looks like Ellen Page, fine by me too:)
Win
last year we have dead island. So zombie / survival game each year.
IMO this was the best trailer of the whole VGA
this is what creative freedom is all about. after critical success uncharted 2 got, sony could've marketed hell out of uncharted 3 and cemented it as their permanent franchise like mario and halo. instead they split team and budget to work on new ip. kudos. best developers in this singular respect. before fanboys take this as bait, am only giving credit where it is due.
I wish this wasn't a Playstation exclusive, it looks very promising. I would gladly give up Halo and Gears for a Naughty Dog Game lol.
@DeanTaker hi. just by watching the trailer, i felt like seeing UC egnine similarities. the way textures are used in this game look quite the same. allways sharp on importand places and many blury , but not bad, textures here and there. i didnt know this is CGI, because, for me, its looked like UC and UC didnt have many (or no) CGI scenes. all ingame.
@COMICNERD11 : chill out mate,PS3's won just let it be.plus if your an xbox fanboy, why are you checking out a ps3 game? O.o
@godzillavskong No it was charlton heston. The guy from planet of the apes and ben hur. The omega man is pretty good, but its pretty 70s though.
@aeming4u oh, i dont know, one spoiler after another? ha
LoL@COMICNERD11 Player hating at its purest form... If you like what you see don't hate... Participate... You on the wrong team playa
I lovvvvve the post-apocalyptic, gotta love naughty dog, killer combination. Excited to see how this turns out, oh and, what a surprise hearing about it!
After just finishing episode 7 of Walking Dead, i stumbled across this trailer on my YouTube channel...Will miss Drake for sure but, this is a very good direction for the Dog to be going in, excited for this, looks epic...
"why people complain that is a zombie game.??? first of all, they are not zombies" What they mean is the game seems to have a zombie-type enemy -- humanoid, altered/mutated/infected, hellbent on killing humans, possessing no regard for personal safety with a high threshold for pain. As the player you will be hunted, but kill the "zombies" wantonly, en masse and in a graphic nature. In Omega Man (a remake of the original Vincent Price "I Am Legend" starring Charleton Heston) the "zombies" were infected vampire-like hippie-types that ate people. The Will Smith version depicted them as much less intelligent, more violent but still as mutated survivors. Most zombie movies have the cause as a viral infection. Any period of death is purely clinical, as we all know that dead people can't get up, chase and kill you. Let's be honest -- the game/pre-render has some very obvious pop-culture influences, many of which were mentioned in this thread.
I was siked as hell when I saw that Naughty Dog was producing this. The Uncharted series has put them to a point where if I hear they're behind it, I'm ready to buy it. I tend to stay away from survival games but if they keep to their great story telling I'd be willing to get the bejeezus scared out of me and play this damn game LOL
@comicnerd11 Why you mad at Sony? You should be blaming MS instead for not having more 1st party studios to make more exclusives for the 360. And what's up with all that hate for Japan....
oh and didnt mention... I LOVE NAUGHTY DOG :D
@COMICNERD11 hey umm bro in case you havent heard... microsoft has these two huge exclusives called Halo and Gears of War.... well in return Sony has Uncharted and Killzone. So to summarize, we both have our own exclusives so chill out with the console war stuff k?
@liam82517 Thats right! Wasn't Robert Duvall in that? Omega Man that is.I thought I saw him in that movie, not sure though because I didn't watch the whole movie.
So after the events of Splinter Cell: Conviction, Sam Fisher finds his daughter, Reed was actually working with the Umbrella corporation which caused this whole mess, and now Sam and Ellen Page must find Will Smith to find the cure .What they don't know is that WIll Smith sacrificed himself at the end of I am Legend, so wait where am i going with this??
@comicnerd11 Hey man, how's it feel in microsofts ass? You act as if the 360 doesn't have any exclusive games. Great job there man! You're clearly a role model to intelligent people everywhere.
Different twist from Uncharted. Kinda like I Am Legend. I will probably buy it since its naughty dog and they make the best games around
This is bullsh*t. Sony is just a greedy little co*k-sucker of a company. The only reason they make exclusive games is that they KNOW that Microsoft is better so they're getting back at Microsoft by making exclusive games. Fuc* you, Sony. Go back to fu**in' Japan.
@Devil_Triger-38 Shut up, you have emo Dante as your pic.
why people complain that is a zombie game.??? first of all, they are not zombies..... if u can see CAREFULLY for those complaining, those things actually feel pain..... and zombies can't feel pain. Second, the city is not destructed or in ruins..... its pretty much changing into a forest like environment.... a zombie game would have dead plants, cuz zombies are most of the time A FRIKKING VIRUS that KILLS EVERYTHING(and reanimated them with only the purpose of infecting more people)..... I rest my case here
