SNK Playmore gives license for Neo Geo portable system; hardware to come preloaded with 20 games including King of Fighters '94, Samurai Shodown, and Metal Slug.
SNK's Neo Geo may be gone, but the arcade-based console is far from forgotten. SNK Playmore is licensing its name and rights on a new portable console that plays Neo Geo games.
According to a post on Famicom Plaza, the portable device has a 4.3-inch screen and two gigabytes of internal storage, and it contains 20 Neo Geo titles. The games are the North American versions of World Heroes, Ultimate 11, Top Player's Golf, Sengoku, NAM-1975, Mutation Nation, Last Resort, King of Monsters, Frenzy, Cyber Lip, Fatal Fury Special, Art of Fighting, Super Sidekicks, League Bowling, Metal Slug, Magician Lord, Baseball Stars Professional, Samurai Shodown, The King of Fighters '94, and Fatal Fury.
The portable gaming device measures at 170x72x15mm and comes with a 2200mAh battery. The device's inputs consist of a control pad, four face buttons, and four shoulder buttons. Other controls include a volume and brightness button, a menu button, and a start button. The device also has a headphone and AV port, along with an SD memory card slot.
Currently, there are no details on a price or release date.
iphone desgin+3DS circle pad+buttons=this? If it is cheap like $40-$100 I might actually get it. Will see how it turns out
And what's the reason that this entire collection couldn't be thrown on a cartridge/disc and sold on your favorite portable game system? For that matter, even downloads via a cellular phone app store would make more sense than this. I'm predicting that this product doesn't ever reach store shelves.
I might get one. I got a Neo Geo Pocket Color ... although it was used and SNK had stopped selling them at the time. I wonder if this will effect (affect?) distribution of Neo Geo games on PSN Store than can be played on a PSP. But come on! Magician Lord?! Swap that out of the pre-loaded collection for any other Neo Geo game, like Kizuna Encounter, Twinkle Star Sprites, Shock Troopers, or Savage Reign! Magician Lord is like a nasty stain on my Wii disc of SNK Arcade Classics vol 1.
Awesome but it's missing one important feature, a cartridge slot. How am I suppose to play my mammoth Neo Geo Samurai Shodown II cart on this thing?
That is good SNK is returning with a portable Neo Geo sort of. If they sell this at 129.99 they could sneak past the 159.99 3DS and $249.99 PSvita.
i would buy this, unless they get crazy and want 200$ for it then ill pass..but i would think this would be cheap and priced within reason
As of rite now im not interested. But if they start coming out with new games for the system then i might consider getting 1.
@snxx I imagine that would be an issue, though I imagine that it would be more profitable if those games were sold as an Android app. I just personally think that the device is really nothing more than those plug and play TV games except in a portable form.
hell yeah! I'd get this over a vita any day! Needs Aero Fighters and Bubble Bobble though. Samurai Showdown was my gaammeee tho.... I probably spent enough money in quarters on that one to buy this thing lol. Always wanted that neo geo pocket back in the day
@flashn00b I really don't believe playing fighting games on a touch screen is the ideal way to have fun.
KoF 94 and not 97 or 98? No Last Blade? Super Sidekicks 1, not 2? BaseBall Stars? Player's Golf? Sign me out.
If it's the same price or less then the 3DS, I might grab one. Especially if you can download their older games for $10 or $15 each. Gotta be priced right ($150 or less) for people to be interested.
Wouldn't it be better to sell SNK games through the Android Market and Apple store than have a device dedicated for this?
This would be great if the designers(like the Wii got games from other old consoles including portables) and it is sub $100.00
Sounds interesting. The old games are great but I believe they'll have to do a little better than that and release some new titles also.
If the price is right ill Probably only Buy it for Fatal Fury and Samurai Shodown I love Neo Geo Games :D
@gatsbythepig So you have an original Neo Geo... but you comment on the D-Pad "That's a d-pad? It looks a lot like a control stick to me. That is a strange looking d-pad." http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/12/neo-geo-2010-12-15-378.jpg Lie Failz FTW?.....
All other handheld fan boys, i dont know why you're crying already, stating the obvious. I think this will be more of a retro toy, rather then a new competitor on the handheld block! my bet is it will cost between £60-£100 or round about this region.
@MUKUSS They had the good sense to use the NGCD pad/NGP-style digital nub. Those things if the microswitches work like they're supposed too, you won't even NEED a d-pad let alone have to worry about one playing arcade games lol.
lol now I'm really scared that Apple really sue Neo Geo makers cause "Neo Geo is rectangular" lol lame Apple
I dont think it will work psn, xboxlive and will got there Neo Geo games and they reasle kings of fighters on ps3 and xbox360 what didnt work. So pp might save there money for other thinks like pspvita next xbox next Will U or next ps4.
