Sure is great that they're jumping ship before they even made it playable online. This game could have a legacy if they would admit the problem and fix it. Maybe tourney interest will keep it alive...
Studio head Ed Boon says WBIE-owned studio is currently at work on projects outside popular fighter franchise.
The first genre award to be handed out at tonight's Spike TV Video Game Awards went to Mortal Kombat for best fighting game of 2011. That moment didn't pass by without a sliver of news from developer NetherRealm Studios, as studio head Ed Boon confirmed that his studio is taking a hiatus from the Mortal Kombat franchise.
According to Boon, while it's an inevitability that the studio will eventually return to the franchise that was first born in 1992, right now the team is at work on a different project. Boon did not offer any other details on what that project may be, though he did note that NetherRealm has no plans to release additional downloadable content for the most recent Mortal Kombat.
One possible new outlet for Boon's Warner Bros. Interactive-owned studio is the Batman franchise. Earlier this week, NetherRealm announced that it had released Batman: Arkham City Lockdown for iOS devices. A riff off of Rocksteady's acclaimed action adventure starring the Black Knight, Arkham City Lockdown pits Batman against foes such as Joker, Two-Face, and Deathstroke in one-on-one fights.
Stay tuned to GameSpot for more from tonight's VGAs.
I'm glad this game got the award. First fighter I ever played when I was a kid. As for ACL I can't wait to see what they'll pull off. I wasn't a fan of MKvDCU.
At least it isn't getting release too soon like crap like MvC3/UMvC3 and COD. I rather see the next MK on the next gen consoles. MK9 is an amazing game by the way.
@GodGundamNT1: The last thing they need to do is go the Capcom route of squeezing every drop of milk out of the cow until the teat shoots dust.
This news is almost as bad as if they were announcing a new MK game... I'll take games they should have stopped making 10 years ago for 2000.
Honestly whats stupid about this is that they really need to do a revised shipping retail disc like Capcom did with Marvel Capcom 3 with Ultimate MvsC3 and SF4 to Super SF4 with Super SF4AE. The reason Ed Boon and NetherRealm Studios needs to do this is because Mortal Kombat 2011 is a broken, crash happy mess, they need to fix those bugs, ADD MORE STAGES, make Kintaro, Goro and Shao Kahn FULLY PLAYABLE+Fatalities/Babalities Kharacters and redo the Challenge Tower so that instead of 300 challenges there are over 1000!! and also redo/revise the Story mode so that its like a Directors Cut story with more fights, and content but not make it a DLC, make it a new Disc and call it Ultimate Mortal Kombat 2012 or Mortal Kombat Turbo Special Super 2012 End of the World Edition or something. I would gladly pay the full $60 dollar price otherwise I feel cheated with how the game randomly crashes and how Goro, Kintaro and Shao Kahn are not playable kharacters.
@donmega1 MK has never been garbage nor never will be.. How much innovation would you like for them to put into their games? They've done so much with MK already.. Made it like a rpg or whatever where you can actually run around with your character etc... made it so you can unlock different things in the game with progression... Sure their latest installment went back to the SEGA generation but that's fine with me.. I like it better that way, its hours of continuous fun and trash talk when I invite a group of buddies over to the house for a MK session. It never gets old, and that's how it is suppose to be played. and commenting on your comment of games that are sequels lose their innovation.. hmmm Mass Effect never lost innovation, as a matter of fact the games just got better, and ME3 is going to be the best installment.
Honestly I think this is a good move, I don't see any problem with them waiting on releasing a sequel until they can come up with a good story and dedicate enough time to get the game mechanically and artistically correct. anyway its better to wait and have fans screaming for a game than to give them a game every darn year and in the process watering down the genre (the music game genre is a perfect example).
@AngelWolfCDS101 I had half a mind to delete and rewrite that comment after I caught that. But I decided against it, and do not take that grammar nazi statement the wrong way.
Doing this after the ending of the campaign (wich I enjoyed a lot)? is almost criminal :P donmega1 is so full of himself.
@RavageCobra It would be, "No. I'm a grammar Nazi, or so I'm told. And, again, it's 'you're', not 'your." ;) Just givin' ya' a hard time, Mr. Nazi. As for you, donmega1, you didn't like the new Mortal Kombat? That's totally fine. Everyone, after all, is entitled to their own opinion, but saying that nothing has changed shows how truly naive you really are. The new Mortal Kombat has drastically changed the franchise. It has taken all the ideas that worked in all the past MKs and combined them into one glorious bang. At least, that is how I see it... and I'm sure there are others here that will agree with me. You're probably a WoW-fanatic, right? You probably spend all day on stupid little raids, wasting time doing the same thing over and over again, spouting stupid, moronic little one-liners about about how awesome Chuck Norris is while Blizzard continuously sucks $15 a month from your bank account. And if it isn't WoW, it's CoD or Battlefield. Whatever the game, I know your type. Only too well do I know your type. So take a cue from RavageCobra and just shut the f*** up. Have a nice day.
@donmega1 The game has not changed? You serious? Let's see, new graphics, some new moves and combos, hell even some of the fatalities have changed. If you want to talk about a game that does not change then you can go talk about CoD, but not MK.
@donmega1 You're making it so difficult for me to believe you're an adult with your immaturity. I'm done aruging with you, kid. Grow a pair, then start an argument. Good day.
@Rat_King yes, I made the unfortunate mistake of buying it and I sold it to best buy for about 7 bucks less than what I paid for it. :)
donmega1, have you even played the newest MK? Clearly not because it is LEAPS AND BOUNDS away from the other "new" MKs. I could explain, but all you need to do is type it in up top. Simple. Maybe do some research before you try to look like a bad ass elitist know it all gamer.
@donmega1 No. I'm a grammar nazi, so I'm told. Again, it's "you're", not "your". Only a child would mess that up. And if you had something, you wouldn't dedicate a whole comment on one little sentence amongst a paragraph. Go screw yourself kid, than come back with a decent argument.
@Warlord_Irochi now that games like streetlighter and fallout have gotten better, what have they done since then? They keeping pumping out a bunch of crap with the same engine and put a 59.99$ price tag on it. Fallout 3 was good. Big jump from 2... But then what? Mortal kombat 10 will come, next generation guaranteed. How much do you think it will change? Well it's been how many years? And they reverted back to the old formula? Boring!
Good for NR :) As much as I enjoyed the new Mortal Kombat, a break from it will do them a world of good. They have been making MK games for a very long time. At any rate I wish them luck with there next project, such a talented gaming studio.
@donmega1 Please die to every game that has more than 3 games with it's name of it? Like the Fallout 3, Tekken and Street Fighter IV you gave a 9.0 rating?? Or maybe like GTA you gave an 8 rating?? Like those ones? What you mean when you say that MK is crap whet you gave a 8.0 to the PSP version?? You are just a guy searching for a cheap argument with other people and not even being able to be consistent with his arguments. There; you got your attention, happy now?
@dongmega1 You're an idiot. Some titles may not be so innovative, but we don't need them to "die." The only real non-innovative title is CoD. Which, you didn't even list. CoD is the only game that needs to die. That game is where innovation comes to a halt. Learn about the gaming industry of today, kid. Not every title requires innovation. It's all about the MONEY. Only few actually care about the quality of their games. Mario is only giving what the fans want. Activi$ion "claims" it's giving what their fans want. The producer of Zelda said it himself he's tired of doing the same thing with Zelda, and wanted to start something fresh. I'm not here to argue with some idiot who thinks he knows everything about games. You idiot wannabe. By the way, "you're", not "your." And how old are you now?
@RavageCobra after the 2nd or 3rd one the games lose their innovation. Your to blind or to young to understand.
@controlfreak25 I been playing mortal kombat games since 1992. It's now 2011 and what has changed? Nothing! The game is crap now. As for getting my head ripped off? I'm not the best but my game performance has nothing to do with wanting to do away something that needed to do a fatality on itself years ago.
@donmega1 Mortal Kombat sucks? Looks like someone has had their head ripped off to many times to actually enjoy the game.
capcom should take a lesson here , they even release the same game multiple times and call them ultimate :D
That's a good idea to put a halt on it instead of overdoing it and make us lose interest in the franchise and a good tool to use to build more anticipation around the next MK. Mr. Boon and the team, You have my utmost respect for this decision which seems like an afterthought in the industry these days.
This is a good idea, though i am diss-pointed they didn't put out more DLC.. More Stages would of been nice. I would like for them to wait for Next Gen consoles before releasing another MK would be a nice break from the franchise and good way to come back strong with way better hardware.
Honestly, not a bad idea. I'd rather have a quality game every few years, than a worse and worse product yearly (Madden, COD and Tony Hawk, I'm looking at you)
@vodoo, your right! That's because there is nothing else out there but sequels to games! You will have your wish! There will be plenty of crappy gears of war games to come. You and Marcus can give each other high fives and kill glowies till your thumbs fall off! I'll pass!
@morethot... No I'm allot older, that's why mortal kombat sucks! Who wants to keep playing a game that was around since I was in fact 10? 12? 14? It's garbage now! Time for a new fighting game!
@ coldfire25. Man...you can't read. Obviously call of duty would fall under that category simpleton!
It better not be Batman!!!!! Why waste talent, time, or money on Batty-boy. I'd rather they just made DLC for MK9 for the next 3 years. Or did absolutely nothing for a while.
@donmega1 Its funny how you left out CoD, silly fan boy. Gears, Halo, and Uncharted are some of the most innovative games to this day. Yet, these continuous shooter games come out a few times a year. Mario, Zelda and Sonic will never die off. There are many games out there that need to die off. And the ones you named and none of them. Good bye Mortal Kombat, the only good fighter game other then the SuperSmash series.
@donmega1 "out with the old crap..." what are you 10? 12? 14? Mortal Kombat is definitely not crap.. Its a classic just like Street Fighter, neither one of these games will ever go away. Also Mario and Sonic are hella classics as well.. I think it is safe to assume you didn't grow up during the times these games were big otherwise you'd more than likely like them... Either that or your 70 or 80 now and hate on them because your kids played them. LOL!
man i played this game a long time ago that was like a old school beat em up but you could do fatalities if i remember right i had to use a cheat code for skorpion as playable but man it was fun
