New Super Mario Bros. Wii sells 937,000 in Japan

Latest platformer starring portly plumber sets new high-water mark for Nintendo's console in region during first four days on market.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl was one of Nintendo's tent-pole releases in 2008, and the game sold like gangbusters upon its January debut in Japan. The heavily anticipated Wii-exclusive multiplayer brawler shifted nearly 820,000 units within the first week of availability in Japan. As hefty a tally as that may be, Super Smash Bros. Brawl's opening performance has been bested in Japan by Nintendo's arguably most anticipated release of 2009, New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Famitsu publisher and stat-tracking firm Enterbrain reports today that New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold 936,734 between December 3-6, the game's first week of availability. Translated by GameSpot, Famitsu's report indicates that the game's opening performance is the best for a Wii title in Japan since the console launched in the region in December 2006.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii received a warm critical reception upon its release in North America on November 15. Nintendo has yet to announce sales figures for the multiplayer-centric platformer in the US, though the NPD Group is expected to release its November US retail report later this week.

According to Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, the game's US haul will eclipse that seen in Japan. In a note to investors today, Pachter estimated that New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold 1.2 million units in the US during the four-week period ended November 28.

@ Frazzle00 Okay. If you weren't living under a rock you would know that Mario Galaxy 2 is in the works. I take it you didn't grow up with this classic Mario games, otherwise you would be happy to see that Nintendo hasn't forgot about it's long time players.

@ NUKKU Im going to ask you the very same question that I asked my friend. Let me say that he has a PS3 only and he was bragging about LBP. So I invited him over to play NSMW and after 2 hours I asked him, so which one is better Mario or LBP? I guess I dnt have to tell you the answer... Nukku: LBP large emphasis on creativity ... and Mario doesnt? Mario is a million times better than LBP and will always be! theres no even one platform game that can compare to MArio, nuff said :P

I'd rather have another Super Mario Galaxy. If I want an old school Mario, I'll play Super Mario World again.

@Latino1982: ummmmm LBP is totally different from Mario cause of LBP large emphasis on creativity which is awesome some of the levels made in the game are simply awesome. Also what are you talking about LBP sold very VERY well for being a new IP so yeaaa dont talk.

Did we really need another Mario? Probably not. But, it keeps selling. Go figure. I could use a new Metroid though.

Yeah, you are right flyingteddy, Ninteno does very little to advance anything, that is why all three ratchet and clanks for the highly advanced PS3 have outscored Super Mario Galaxy right? Oh, that's right, they didn't. As for nukku, I guess Disney must REALLY drive you nuts for all the milking of Mickey Mouse huh?

Warlord_Irochi

What? honestly I spected a lot more! we're talking about "Mario" and "Japan" here. *Shocked*

flyingteddy

not sure you can compare LBP to Mario, LBP uses real physics, while Mario is an old school platformer. I commend the developers of LBP for at least trying to advance the platformer genre. Nintendo have done very little to advance anything.

@nukku people will never get tired of mario, sony tried a 2D platform, little big planet, not bad, but the controlls are not that good and it doesnt even get to the ankles of any mario game, nuff said little boy xD

@thetravman: see this is what Nintendo really expects from the consumers no one notices they milk there franchises they milk like crazy and just because they give mario to other developers doesnt mean they dont get any money theres a price to pay to use mario in games and Nintendo is sure making a killing from that. Nintendo are genius dont get me wrong they are masters at milking series im not saying there games are bad but their not original either they are the same thing OVER and OVER again same basic mechanics nothing new except a setting and maybe new costumes(the penguin suit i mean seriously wtf) I give credit to Nintendo cause they are buisness genius but there games are the same over and over again Hey and if u think i sound like a ten year old i dont care im just saying my opinion on Nintendo and its excessive milking i mean i didnt see all this milking till about a year or two ago right when the Wii had no hardcore games on it whatsoever besides like two games

thetravman
thetravman

@NuKkU I think you're missing the point of the term "milking." Nintendo relies heavily on Mario and it still works because people want more Mario. However they are far from milking him mainly because they come up with fresh new original ideas in every installment. Milking something is making the same game that brings nothing new to the table, therefore the audience gets sick of it (hence Guitar hero). Look at Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. They got the same 3D mechanics but gameplay and setting is very different in each game. As for Mario being in over 200 games, that's not all Nintendo's doing. Nintendo gives off its mascot for other developers to make sport games and what not, but even then I think they're unique and fun in its own way. Milking a franchise has nothing to do how many games a character is in, it depends on the variety and overall quality of each game. (by the way, you do sound like a fanboyish 10 year old)

Why the hell are you all so bent out of shape over a Mario game selling so much? Mario is a pop icon, he transcends the boundaries of the video game industry. He's not going anywhere anytime soon. If the rest of the world can love a Mario game, so can all of you.

ayumi_miyazaki
ayumi_miyazaki

@BigBoss2014 Look, yes mario and link are used a lot but that's why I like the metroid series overall; because its the least milked but definately their most mature series! Out of the top 3 I know samus has the best series but she is not as popular as mario! Heck even link isn't as popular as mario. So can you really blame nintendo for using mario left and right. If they release a new series (forever blue; another code; battalion wars; fire emblem) it won't sell as good as mario! Point blank!

the Wii is not a game console it is a lame console. lame games, lame graphics, lame controller wiggle, lame children throwing controllers into HighDef TV's, the last good Nintendo was the 64 it had good shooters, the cube stunk the wii is a cube with wiggle and it is lame

BigBoss2014
BigBoss2014

@ayumi_miyazaki seriously, who are you to say my opinion is meaningless, read my words and dont go off blabbing until you understand, mario is a loved character. trew.but so was sonic thats what im saying, his good, but his being overused because if he wasnt used no one would have a wii, nintendo need to get something new or he WILL so the way of sonic, they dont have to put him into every nintendo game but they pretty much do, he is a legend, but so are many others BETTER characacters are hard to come by, none on nintendo consoles, the few legends xbox has are pretty even and ps3 has lots of legendary characters, i never said he was bad, but he is over used, you dont see marcus pheniox and solid snake in every xbox or ps3 exclusive, why? they both have several brilliant characters while nintendo really just have mario and link left, they need someone knew

@KieranCottrell: uhhhh none of that is original Brain Age was never original those look books u could find and barnes and noble was exact same thing, wii fit is original but it doesnt even work if u wanna lose weight how bout u.........GO OUTSIDE, and wii sports is not even a sports game and like ive said a million times before its nothing like the sports that they have in the game once again GO OUTSIDE And what are u talking about im just talking about Mario not being milked hes in over 200 different GAMES 200!!!!! And thats just mario they milk all there franchises. Also the Wii never worked out like it was supposed to i personally hate motion controllers because if i wanted to do any of this i would go outside(which i do :P ) but they had to release another controller to it so it would work like it was supposed too. Also not to mention the Wii has only like 5 hardcore games on the whole system. Im not a fanboy i just wish the people would see that Nintendo is the biggest milker of all time more then EA more then Activision they are the mother of all milking and they it too and i dont blame them they are making a killing off people who buy there milked stuff without even realizing I rest my case

This is a great game, like the DS version before it. Like @sluffmochildeater said, it is a great game for playing with the non-gaming significant other. It's also great for kids. Well deserving of high sales. I'm not sure how my Gamefly renting of the game affects overall US sales, but I definitely want to buy the game after having it since release date. I'll have to hold off until 2010 for that full purchase, though. My biggest complaint about the game so far is the graphics and that's not really a big deal. _

My fiance and I love this game. If you are trying to get your lady into games then this is one of those perfect games to achieve that. Just don't get mad when half your deaths are because of her =).

@Nukku - Seriously, how can you 'hate' Nintendo? Even working on your terms, that they are never 'original' (despite almost single-handedly introducing millions of people to the industry with Brain Training, Wii Fit, Wii Sports etc; despite being the only gaming company to make motion sensing popular and profitable), and 'milk' their franchises (I have yet to see Mario 2009/2010/2011/2012, and how can you complain when in any of their major franchises there is never a real dip in quality), I don't think you have a point. Have a problem with EA by all means (if you really need to have a 'problem' with a video game company), but don't pretend your points are asserted by anything but blind fanboyism.

@ Flint247 Most GS users these days are people who first experienced gaming during the 32-bit era atleast, so the hate is understandable. Nobody can truly feel the impact of a historic event (yes Super Mario Bros. deserves that title) unless they lived through it. Another reason I can think of for the hate is that maybe some aren't into 2D stuff anymore, they find it inferior. Others find Mario only for little kids.

@Frequenxy exactly, nintendo has to bring those games to wii/ds with updated graphics, sound and storyline and i bet you they are going to sell like hot bread. just look at mario, zelda and medroid..they are great games, real high score in all magazines and im they they have more surprises for these franchises @ClintKeys im 23 now, i remember when i was a little kid spending hours just playing smb3 for nes, im sucker on buying any mario game out there and so far they deliver..they are great games

pretty good numbers. and yes, i'd like to see new franchises but in this economy it's probably not the best idea for a video game company that already has a lot of well established franchises already.

@clintkeys The Nintendo Wii console is the most popular platform among female gamers in the United States and japan, according to the latest figures from Nintendo. Around 80 per cent of female gamers prefer the Wii, a huge lead over rivals Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3, which were the consoles of choice for 11 per cent and nine per cent of female gamers respectively. The figures did not take in to account PC gamers, or those who play hand-held consoles, such as Sony's PSP or Nintendo's DS. "This didn't happen by accident," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo in the US. "It's the result of a deliberate attempt to expand the market." There are an estimated 11.7 million female console gamers in the United States, and around nine million have chosen the Wii as their primary home games console. Female gamers are still outweighed by male gamers, with about 33.3 million men in the US saying they regularly play video games on a home console. Nintendo has been aggressively pursuing the so-called "casual" gaming market for the last few years. Its hand-held DS console, and games such as Dr Kawashima's Brain Training, have been credited with attracting more women and young girls to video games, while the Wii, which uses a motion-sensing controller system, has proved particularly popular with families. Now I know your right about the wii having great 3rd party games like monster hunter but I'm a young japanese female casual player, those hardcore games are tooooooo hard for me. Just give me good old wii fit/wii sports and I'm happy!

@Toxicclown That's exactly what you are is a clown. I can picture you 200 pounds overweight, coke-bottle glasses, and sporting a stench that makes your mother's heart melt. Wii emulation is far from perfect, and even with the fastest computer on the market, the way the emulation is now, it isn't even close to being as fast as a wii itself and it's highly prone to bugs and glitches, and you'd still have to go out and buy Wii-motes and chuks. Second, it's only been 250 bills, the fact that you can't support that says a lot about you, and if a great game like NSMB only holds your attention for 30 minutes before going back to the same game, an FPS at that, why are you even posting on Gamespot? Nobody wants to hear about your pathological lies about current-gen emulation. You are a liar and a thief, and most obviously a clown.

Honestly Mario bros Wii + 3 friends = A stupid amount of accidental death, yet amazingly fun game play. Honestly if I had died this much in any other video game I'd probably have thrown my controller through the TV by now, but in this game its fun, mostly because its completely accidental and quite humorous.

@Frequenxy You order placement of the top 6 is off in my opinion. Where's fire emblem and advance wars on your list? Hotel dusk? Another code r? Oh well. The truth is no one is too concerned with all those franchises at the moment. Only samus; link and mario matters now!

@Frequenxy - I agree lol. @devildothack - Your a great nintendo fan. I didn't grow up with Mario but when I first started to play his games, I never stop playing. I have 4 Mario games on the VC! @ayumi_miyazaki - Your a casual player, I'm well-balanced with both, its all cool. I used to only play Pokemon back in the Game Boy days but thanks to the Wii/DS, I started playing newer games! ooh..btw have u heard of sin and punishment 2?

Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Kirby. All great franchises, but I wish Nintendo would create new franchises, and then promote them like they do with these top 6. They had a great thing going with Pikmin and Pikmin 2! I want Pikmin 3 for Wii, and Pikmin DS. How about F-Zero Wii? Or Kid Icarus? Or Earthbound? The top 6 are great! But would it kill Nintendo to expand and add more franchises? And another thing, only 2 out of the 6 big name games are out for the Wii right now, with Zelda coming next year...finally...What happened to Star Fox, and Kirby, and Donkey Kong?

of course itsold so well in japan -_- i would love to see mario get his head ripped off and have him finished and no more. when nintendo has no new ideas for a new game, they result in yet another mario game so they wont lose money
