Job listing at Microsoft suggests company will roll out next iteration of Xbox console by February 2014 at the latest.
A "new version" of the Xbox will be on store shelves sometime during the next 18 months, according to a new job advertisement at Microsoft.
"Over the next eighteen months, Microsoft will release new versions of all of our most significant products including Windows (Client, Server, Phone and Azure), Office, and Xbox, along with completely new offerings like Microsoft Surface," reads a line from the requisition.
[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "Microsoft is always looking for talented people to innovate now and in the future. We don't have any further comment on this or any other job posting."
Earlier this week, Microsoft shot down speculation that it had confirmed a new Xbox, saying comments from Microsoft general manager Brian Hall were misunderstood. In an interview last week with The Verge, Hall name-dropped "new Xbox," but Microsoft said he was actually speaking about this fall's new Xbox Live update.
The analyst consensus is that the next Xbox, as well as the PlayStation 4, will be on store shelves for holiday 2013. A recent 56-page document supposedly originating from Microsoft said the next Xbox would launch in 2013 at $299 bundled with the second iteration of the Kinect, among other updates.
being that online play requires xbox live servers and is a key component to the 360..I wonder how long ms would support it after the 720 was to come out..because the original xbox live got shut down years ago and the ps2 which was released before the xbox still has online play through official servers; official indie servers...and online play didn't require a subscription..I feel bad for anyone who would spend money on a new xbox at this time as most games on this gen don't even have LAN play options for lan tunneling software for future play
if the next-gen console's are are around 300$ then i might buy it however if it's 4-600$ i'll just invest in a new video card for my PC. I don't believe MS or Sony. I think the next console will be the same launch price tag as the last one if not higher.
@punisher70 they have always been around the same price..I think that compared to how much money is worth nowadays compared to the 90s..the ps3 was actually cheaper than the original ps..pc gaming got cheaper but consoles stayed around the same
Yeah unfortunately i brought a £1300 gaming pc instead which will play games way better than the consoles.
@Cruisemissile maybe alone in your basement you 50hz freak
I dont know why anyone would drop £1300 on a pc and i build em for a living but a £600 PC can cake walk the consoles hence why my 360 and ps3 only come out for exclusives.
And my PC is hooked up to my 47" 3d tv and works perfectly fine with a group over LAN beats split screen hands down...
Maybe you both should stop talking trash about the others chosen play style PC will always cake walk consoles when it comes to graphics and certain genres RPG, Strategy take TW for a whirl and show me which consoles pulling that off. like wise sports games and budget gaming is always going to be the ground of the consoles. pros and cons either way,
Cost wise to me it all depends on the user if like me you play a tonne of games PC is cheaper yes a bigger initial investment but they games are upto £15 cheaper and i game alot average 2 or 3 new games a month.
if ya buy maybe 3 or 4 games a year high end PC is a waste go with the console, quit bitching like newborns get your controller/keyboard of choice and play some damn games! although this next gen il probably drop out of the xbox and ps market and just go with my PC and a wii U for zombiu and to keep the kids happy :)
xbox...720? cause with the ms track record they are about ready to sh!t on their customers and dump the 360
I think holiday season is much more likely for both next Xbox and next PS - just a case of which year or if one is having to play catch up!
wow its just job listings you ever thought maybe they need more people to dev the software better unless mircosoft comes out and says a new xbox will be out on this date like they always have i think gamespot and others should just stop with this pointless posting of basicly useless intel
More gossip just take it there is no new xbox weather it be a new version or the next xbox until they actually announce it.
Also, I see a lot of talk about the Kinect taking away from the experience.
If anything it adds, that is stupid. granted, the motion tracking games are 100% kid-gimmik BS.
But the voice control for games is absolutely awesome. Playing Skyrim or Mass Effect 3 is just AWSOME that way.
This better be a new console. The end of a chapter of life used to be measured for me by the end of a console cycle. X360 has been around since 05, that is since I was 17. I am 24 now, this chapter needs to END!
the Xbox 360 slim felt more fragile than the previous model. the older model of the Xbox 360 to me felt more sturdy and reliable so what im wondering is if the "new xbox" is just gonna be the same with just different touches or renovations to the whole thing entirely?
If it comes with the Kinect and I have to subsidize that thing with an inferior console GPYU, CPU etc I will consider not buying. $299 is too low to have a high tech console first yet have to subsidize a kinect pack in.
@Telekenesis123 I have to admit I have no use for Kinect either!
If they have to save money on other more vital components in order to include Kinect hardware, that is just wrong. For me Xbox is a console for serious gamers and you don't play serious games like RPG's by waving your arms about.
If that is MS's idea of progress then the only gesture I would give them is the middle finger, but it's all just speculation from all of us anyway.
What would be nice, instead of keeping secrets and spreading rumors would be for MS to actually ASK their CUSTOMERS what they would like to see in a new console, but obviously that is just another Final Fantasy which will never happen!
@Simba13 I don't think it's their idea of progress as much as it's their attempt to attract customers away from the Wii. The only good uses Kinect has had in "hardcore" games has been voice commands which, if we were allowed to, could be performed with any microphone. I as much as any one hope they drop Kinect as soon as possible and return to appealing to the core Xbox market, perhaps with a new IP?
Why would they miss the 2013 Christmas season releasing in February, that would be huge mistake so I think we can assume late Nov early Dec as more plausible.
I think $299 sounds fine for those buying this system, but they seriously need to stop with the commericials lol.
The job ad says "over the next 18 months," not "exactly 18 months from today." Also, "Xbox" is now a brand, so a "new version" most likely means a new console. I'd be surprised if they don't release the next Xbox around holiday 2013.
Uummm.. 18 months from today would be Feb 2014. So I hope it'll come before that time. I hope the new system launches with at least 8-10 exclusives. No more Gears, Forza, Fable or Halo. I want all NEW never before seen exclusives.
I feel sorry for the guy who goes out and buys this "new version xbox" and then sees that the "new xbox" comes out soon after. I feel like they just want to take as much money from us as possible.
the crisis wil putt xbox at $1.000,00 dolars, or more, when have crisis, they try keep with the same lucrative funds, i dont know what they want, you pay for console, for games, for xbox live gameplay, for energy to putt on the console. you pay for everything and when time pass, you will have to pay MORE. The console price can decrease but who know about another things?
Sounds like they had a big internal Yay rah rah meeting about the next Xbox but didn't make it clear everyone was supposed to shut up about it.
"New Version?" "New XBox?" Which is which?
A new version could mean a redesigned XBox 360. A new XBox on the other hand means an entirely new game console from Microsoft.
The author of this article should be more careful with his headlines. The readers might feel mislead and irritated by his play of words. The same goes with the person interviewed in the article. They should be more precise with their public statements.
@toyo75 No offense, but it doesn't take a genius to work out that it's the new console, not a new version of the 360.
It doesn't take a genius yet so many comments on this forum seriously belive it is an updated 360. Just sad so many people are getting up in arms.

I don't see where he reports these things as anything other than rumor and speculation - you're not meant to make life altering decisions based on these articles. And he always seems to ask for confirmation but they usually "decline requests for comment." Unless you're only reading the headline, which seems pretty common here. I wonder if he has control of the headlines.
I predict new consoles 2014 for a while now. I might not be far off from that mark. Late 2013 could be possible, but 2014 is more sound.
this is getting pathetic, more or less every day there is a "new xbox" news headline. doesn't eddie have anything better to do? Is it possible to report gamespot to gamespot for spamming the news feed? lol
in fact, game spot tells us about his imaginations although microsoft denied all these imaginations Please stop game spot
This is what the 33rd article speculating in when the damn thing will come out? It all does not matter one bit until we hear it from the actual companies themselves. Stop it Eddie Makuch.
