Maybe Nintendo will realize that North America is a bigger market to them and they should cut back on the bullcrap when it comes to home consoles. No doubt their next generation will change the game - again.
Company president cites NPD data saying 43.1 million DS systems and 30.4 million Wiis sold in US, PS3 in distant last place with 13.5 million sold; holiday months account for nearly half of Nintendo hardware sales.
The industry-tracking NPD Group may have stopped doling out hardware sales figures, but that's not stopping the data from finding its way into public. Today at a BMO Capitals Market presentation in New York, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime used the firm's figures to underscore the success of the Wii and DS and show just how far behind the competition was in the US.
Citing NPD data, Fils-Aime had the DS and Wii in first and second place as far as US installed base goes, with 43.1 million and 30.4 million systems sold, respectively. The next best-selling hardware was the Xbox 360 (21.9 million), followed by the PSP (17.7), and PlayStation 3 (13.5 million). Later in his presentation, Fils-Aime noted that the Wii Balance Board alone has sold more than 12 million units since its debut in 2008 alongside Wii Fit.
The executive then shifted his sights to the upcoming holiday season. While the end of the year is a crucial time for the industry as a whole, Fils-Aime said, "The holidays are more important to Nintendo than to other manufacturers." In 2009, nearly half of all hardware sales for the company came during the last two months of the year. He also said that 44 percent of Nintendo software sales for the entire year came during these months (compared to the rest of the industry's 33 percent).
For this holiday season, Fils-Aime said Nintendo has a number of big brands lined up to bolster sales, including the Mario Anniversary bundles and Donkey Kong Country Returns, which will be released on Nov. 21.
@lithus I know what you mean. The Wii is what, 4 years old now? And that's around the time Nintendo starts thinkin' of releasing a brand new system. (which is the 3DS) But what about the next home console? Will Nintendo continue on with the motion stuff or will it be something different? I'm personally waiting to see what new systems are coming out next, just for the heck of it.
@woodyfr - Yeah, the latest e3 study was in June 2010. Unless Reggie Fils Aime was lying, then things have changed since then. Its probably decreased lately since Nintendo isn't doing as well as they were in June
@Pzypro: I hear ya 2, atleast you admit the appeal of the PS3 and 360 stuff. Most PC and Wii owners would just crap all over the two. Good deal man. 1st, I like the Wii, I can see it's appeal cause I've played my fair share of it (so I'm not a fanboy)............................... That's why Nintendo targeted casual gamers as well as it's (Nintendo's) hardcore fanbase. They attracted gamers that would otherwise not buy a video game system. But in all honesty. Many ppl I've come across today don't play Wii much anymore. Nor do they buy new games for it. The novelty simply wore off for them. Most of my friends played the sports games and left it at that. Hence the big initial sales.......................................That's also why the 360 and PS3 didn't sell as many units. "Most" casual gamers just don't go out and buy intimidating (and often complicated) titles like CoD and Mass Effect, for example.
@Pzypro: I hear you there. Every now and then, there's a Wii or DS game I like. I've been with Nintendo since the NES days (kind of showing my age, lol!) and this is the generation where I'm not exclusive to Nintendo anymore. I have all three consoles and most iterations of the DS (got the first model to the DS Lite). I'm thinking of getting a PSP (the PSP-3000 model, not the Go) soon as well.
It's a pity that all these hardware sales do me little to no good as far as games enjoyment goes =\. I don't know if I have perhaps been exclusively with Nintendo for too long or if I just lack a variety of experiences but I'm honestly very disappointed with what the Wii offers me now (and see nothing interesting upcoming) and constantly drool at 360/PS3 games which seem extremely appealing. Meh.
monson it cant beat every month because wii has already beat it since launch it already failed to do that , sure wii sales havent been as high as 4 yrs ago but for 360 to ever catch back up to the wii total sales it better out sell wii 2 to 1 from here on out and i dont see that happening im sorry , the reason 360 sold more in the last 2 months is the slim 360 once that dies down you will see the real sales leader back where it was the holidays is nintendos key season and they just get momentum from that point on and your 2nd post, the wii does have games with online your obviously new here other wise youd know! plus 360s online is not free so the only online console i count is wii and ps3 and ps2
I'll be playing Sonic Colors and DKCR often in a few weeks, on top of my already frequently played Mario Galaxy 2 and SSBB. So I'm not sure how some of you peoples Wii's are 'collecting dust'.
@Flint247, wii games dont have online modes. online adds alot of replay value imo. its gonna be that more then kinect and move that will end up killing the wii off next year
I could care less if there is a HD Wii or not. To me, gameplay and replay value is all that matters. Sure, I like beautiful graphics, but if it's ONLY focused on graphics and poor gameplay, the game fails, no matter what.
My Wii is playing Kirby Epic Yarn and Monster Hunter Tri as of late. It'll eventually have Goldeneye 007 a DKCR in it as well. It did collect dust for about 3 months as I played Halo, Borderlands, Fallout 3, Limbo, Braid, MW2 and a few other games. None it has a slew of games ready for action. *********************************************************** @Latino1982 @monson21502 I think Nintendo is gonna kill the US market once again with the Nintendo 3DS!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think your right. I'd like to pre-order mine now if I could.
@ nintendoboy16 I guess you are right some Ps3's do collect dust. But you have to admit it that sales of the wii are slowing and will remain slow until they cut the price to $99 bucks next year.
In-precise controls LMAO yeah right. Too bad Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 (especially) are the most wonderfully designed games for control ever. So fluid and perfect. Most quality Wii games don't even use the motion controls to a large degree thus ruling out you "inprecise controls" argument. The great thing about Nntendo taking back over the gaming industry from the very brief PS1/PS2 reign is that Nintendo now has HUGE money to work with on the next console. Just wait, it'll come out before the 720 and PS4 and still blow them both out of the water in terms of originality. My guess is that Nintendo will smarten up and put the processing power and graphics on the same level as competition. Then they would truly have a monopoly of the gaming industry once again. Hardcore gaming fans will ALWAYS play video games, and if you put out a quality game no matter what system, hardcore gamers will play it. Nintendo knows this. Casual gamers need to be drawn in. Casual gamers will not play video games unless you offer something new and fresh. Nintendo has been the perfect business model this past half-decade with the Wii.
@Roxo I have to argue the fanboys because they don't really look at other gamers points of view. They want to hype the hell out of this console when IMO which I am arguing the wii is the failure of the company. It started back when gamecube started to try and be different just for difference sake. The wii controls either have to be wholly based on gimicky controls or just feel weird. I don't think this is about gaining ground for this console war the gamers should look at the content not sales. All I need is my PC and My 360 I was excited for the wii, but you lost me at in precise controls and lack of dvd playback. I mean it's not even a dvd player its so archaic I am surprised it doesn't run carts and vhs. @truelori Go ahead tell me what is wrong with call of duty. Multiplayer issues aside (which I can get into instantly because my console doesn't treat me like I am pedobait.)
@roxomega Granted, Xbox 360 is more popular than PS3, and has better online service. However, Nintendo has been very popular this generation with its Wii and DS systems. In the last generation, the PS2 sold more than both GC an Xbox combined. But now, the tables have turned in favor of Nintendo. Perhaps the Kinect will regain some ground for Microsoft? Anyway, gonna go play some MHF on PSP and some OOT on N64 before bed.
@XT-inc The reason why Nintendo games retain their full price is not because of Nintendo's refusal to lower it, but because of sales. Prices are determined by the market. When a product's sales decline, the prices are lowered to clear out stock (see PlayStation's "Greatest Hits" for example or games like Wii Music, which is now $20 new). When games sell strongly, there's no reason to cut the price, which is why titles like Mario Kart Wii still sell for $50 while MGS4 probably costs around $30 new and any Gamestop you go to will have mountains of used copies.
well all of you with your own points of view mine are well is doesnt matter what mine are but im gone tell you guys anyway last to first coming in at #7 iphone #6 ds #5 psp #4 wii #3 xbox360 #2 pc #1 PS3 and thats just how i feel cant be a fanboy cause i own them all, serveral like 2 or 3 of each but thats just me want to really know something about them and the games i can tell you i play them all
Personally, I prefer my Wii to my PS3. There's just something about it that still feels refreshing to me as a long-time gamer. It's not that I don't like my PS3, but I've been kind of bored with it lately, and I find myself enjoying games on Wii, even games that got middling reviews. I think it's because the console makes me jump through the least hurdles to play games. Update this, patch that, install this...I get tired of waiting for my PS3 games to get ready at times, and the sheen of HD graphics wore off on me way back when I conquered Folklore (my first PS3 game). It doesn't surprise me at all that Nintendo hardware is the best selling. This is how it's supposed to be, when the company that created the game industry and inspired generations is doing things the way it's supposed to be... concentrating on gaming, not on spectacle.
@XT-INC Dont try to argue in forums mate.. Gamespot has some of the most ignorant filth to ever traverse the interwebz. With Thousands of Sony/Nin fanboys screaming at what ever there bold enough to shout at. The reason you see so many SONY/NINTINDO fans in here is cause there systems are not keeping them entertained... IF you'll excuse me Gonna go play more COD-BO on my XBOX before bed. Oh and before some flammer has @ me let me remind them Xbox Live has logged more hours played over PSN/WII/World of Warcraft combined so think before you reply++ Proud Owner Of: My Competitive Gaming System::XBOX 360(Creative Gaming System w/ Kinect)++ My Expensive Blue Ray Player w/ A Few Excellent Exclusives(You keep buying them for yourself and ill keep knocking the dust off ya) PS3++ And my 200$ Paper Weight i just keep around to play Zelda/Mario/Pokemon your bread winners. WII
I have a Wii and a X-box 360. The Wii gives me access to all those great 1st party Nintendo games that I have been playing for decades like Mario and Zelda and Metroid. The 360 gives me access to all those great 3rd party games like Gears of War and Half-Life 2. As for the PS3, yeah, there are only two games i can think of that i can't get on my other systems that i would want to play, and that is just not worth it to invest in that overpriced POS. Cost benefit is a factor for consoles, something Sony may want to consider in the future.
My ps3 may be trailing in last.. but I know for a FACT it's by far the best console - spent a lot of time on all three. The only reason consoles sell more than their competitors is prices - not quality. Nintendo cheapest = top Xbox 2nd cheapest = 2nd Ps3 most expensive = last place Its hardly rocket science. The real science is the quality of the consoles. Which I am more than happy with. Had it still launch an still going strong.
I have both a Wii and 360, and love them both equally (I'm a gamer, not a fanboy). I will admit that the Wii did gather some dust when I got the 360 (which was after the Wii), but that was due to me wanting to play several games on my new 360...not because it was better. And presently, due to me spending all my time with my 4 month old daughter, they're both gathering dust...
HD! HD! HD! HD! ... To me HD is not all that gaming has to offer, I own a Xbox360 and the Wii and im 100% sure that i spent more time playing Wii that Xbox360 this Year. Nintendo Rocks and they make the best games, look at all the hype about God of War 3 ... and then? Lots of ppl have told me that Bayonetta is Better than GOD3, Look at Zelda, Look at Mario, Look at Kirby, Look at Metroid ... AWESOME GAMES! One thing that most people forget is that alot of us grew up playing nintendo, so Mario and company are like part of our lives. LONG LIVE NINTENDO!!!
Wow...who woulda known $599 starting Price wouldn't have sold lol big dummies. Guess people were not hardcore enough to pay that price.
Wow... who woulda known that people would prefer a low-def fad of a paper weight over a PS3 more than 3-1.
Wii doesn't have enough games to satisfy hardcore gamers, but it does have a few fantastic ones. I've played and beat most of the highly anticipated/rated games this year and Super Mario Galaxy 2 still remains my favorite.
lord wii leads in japan and austrilia china etc aswell so ya , it leads world wide since launch nothing gonnachange it whether or not it is 2nd in us now, for 360 to catch it it have to sell wii by 2 to 1 and on holidays 4 to 1 , but that never gonna happen so dream on
@flawless75 yeah i think they´ll show it at e3 2011 and be out by the end of next year or biginning of 2012, oh and by wii hd i dont mean like an update of the current wii, but a whole new wii, like a wii 2
The Wii is a juggernaut in the console industry! HD or not, it has really moved units. I actually like this new red unit a lot better. I may get one before the end of the year, but I'll have to see how bad my Christmas funds are.lol
i know this is off the subject, but when do you think a wii hd would come out, i think it would come out in late 2011?
I find it funny when people think "mature" games are the only good games and overlook games that appear to be "kiddie". Not saying you don't have an opinion, but most of the "kiddie" games are actually great compared to some of the over-hyped mature games.
I don't have many Wii games, but I still play my Wii. I've been playing it for over 2 years straight. Even after I got a 360, I still want to play my Wii sometimes.
Maybe it's just that I'm not a gamer like I used to be, but I never play mine. I've bought or rented and played all the big name titles, and I dunno, they just don't keep me engaged. Mario Galaxy kept me interested for a few weeks. I've tried picking it up and playing it again but it doesn't keep me interested. Metroid, I tried playing it, but it seemed like a very generic shooter to me, and I thought the motion controls were just put in because it was on a Wii, turning a fuse using the Wiimote for the motion, as exhilirating as it is, felt tacked on. Mario Kart kept me on it for a good bit, but that lost its appeal too. I mean it was fun, but playing a cartoony kart racing game when I could've instead been playing, I think maybe it was Forza 2, much prettier, much cooler, took my attention. Wii just doesn't cut it for me. I also think these numbers are probably skewed, because it seems like everybody and their mother owns a Wii. It was cheap, a novel concept at first, but hardly any of my friends play it anymore. I think of Wii as a kiddie console with kiddie games. Looking at their lineup, with a few exceptions, doesn't do much to convince me otherwise. just my thoughts.
wow , me and some one was arguin on yahoo last night i m gonna show him this lol he d wish he never said anything he thought xbox 360 sold more world wide let alone usa
