Nintendo to make 'serious' 3DS titles
Company president Satoru Iwata reveals Nintendo's plans to make "elaborate games targeting serious gamers" for 3DS; claims successor to Wii will be 3D compatible.
Nintendo hit the ground running with its E3 press conference last week, announcing a strong lineup of first-party titles for all its systems. The new 3DS handheld was no exception, with news that Kid Icarus: Uprising, Star Fox 64 3D, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would all be getting the 3D treatment in the future.
While Nintendo's focus seemed to be squarely on first-party development, the publisher also stressed that the 3DS would launch with ample third-party support. The company has now reiterated its aim to better embrace external publishers, with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata telling Japanese news service Nikkei that he intends to work more closely with developers in order to "expand into elaborate games targeting serious gamers."
The wave of third-party titles announced so far for the new Nintendo handheld seem to back up Iwata's statements, with titles like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D - The Naked Sample, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Pro Evolution Soccer, Dead or Alive 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, Ninja Gaiden, Pac-Man & Galaga, and Dragon Ball would all be coming to the 3DS, as well as a spate of unnamed titles from developers like Harmonix, Take-Two, Atlus, AQ Interactive, Disney Interactive Studios, Hudson Soft, Majesco, Marvelous Entertainment, and Sega.
In the Nikkei interview, Iwata went on to suggest that the current DS and its software only caters to those who do not play games; something that he hoped to rectify with the 3DS in terms of advances in graphics and gameplay. Recognising this shift in focus from first-party to third-party development, Iwata told Nikkei that Nintendo went to great lengths to incorporate software developers' requests when making the 3DS and called on these developers to make games for the new system.
"These partnerships are good for both Nintendo and the software developers," Iwata said.
Iwata also announced Nintendo's plans to make the successor to the Wii 3D compatible, telling Nikkei that "a full-scale entry into this field will take some time because 3D televisions will not catch on right away."
Look at those puppies they are so realistic!! .... :-/ .. I would like to buy a 3DS, I'm just waiting to find a couple of good reasons. That "look at those puppies!!" did not help...
This system will be made or broken at the retail demo station - since it can only be experienced in real life something as seemingly meaningless as the angle the system is bolted to the counter will be the biggest factor in whether consumers buy into it. I really hope it's as good as people who have witnessed it seem to think
Hell yeah, Nintendo. It's about time you got your head out of the ground and embraced outside developers. That is te one thing constantly holding Nintendo back. The handheld Zelda games are a tesamant to how well outside developers can handle games on Nintendo, but then agian, it was Capcom that took part in those games.
@ benny-pimpster and RagingBob Well to obsess a little further, Techspert's comment was about Metal Gear Solid, not Metal Gear. The Solid spinoff series did originate on PS1, tho as mentioned its GC port invalidates the PS-exclusive theory.
Excellent. Good to hear.
@beny_pimpster Not to be obsessive, but the original Metal Gear game was released on the MSX about 5 months before it was released for the NES, and from everything I've heard the MSX version is superior (I've yet to have the chance to play it or Metal Gear 2). Nice to see someone who knows that it was on the NES before it was on the Playstation though.
@dynamo11 .... Oh sorry I didn't get what you meant, thought you meant best hardware, not best hardware ideas. :D
@shafe-man I kinda meant the best ideas in hardware. From N64's widely available 3D to the Wii's motion sensing capabilites.
So psyched for this, if it's coming out in 2011 Nintendo will have caused the first hype-induced death ever. Heck, I don't think I could even wait for November 22. :O
@dynamo11 I hope you mean the opposite, right?
@ blazetiger89 your comparing nintendos next gen handheld to sonys psp. sony still have to announce what they are going to bring out. although i still think the 3ds is going to be awsome. i will definately get this
Good to see Nintendo raking in bigger titles. They always have the best hardware but not so much the bast software.
I will seriously buy this, and waiting for a new tactics advance game to be released.
3ds vs psp. 3ds wins! psp epic fail. i think this is what's gonna happen when the 3ds comes out.
@ The-Techspert:::: it was originaly on the nintendo console to begin with :)
If anyone wants more of Ocarina Of Time besides the game, check out the manga comics part one and two at the bookstore.
I hope game developers use the anologe stick to good effect. FPS Anyone? Hurray for LOZ OOT!!! :D
@MATRIXMAN3780 Exactly what were you trying to imply?
[This message was deleted at the request of the original poster]
Metal gear solid (snake) was in smash bros brawl too
@The-Techspert they made one for the gamecube and also the gameboy color I think
Theyre bringing Metal Gear Solid to Nintendo? I thought it was a Sony/Playstation exclusive.
@sneekyratchet... I think you mean to say that the third party games on Wii are largely crap. And on that, you are correct! The publishers are the same companies that publish for all consoles.
Nintendo sure knows how to catch peoples attention.....Im such a sucker for nintendo
I can see into the future and SE are going to bring a FF7 remake to the 3DS, with better character models new CGI movies and hi res CGI backdrops
@darknautxxx Both Link's Awakening DX and ALLTP GBA had a bonus dungeon and extra items. Sorry, lol!
@yodelyfish I agree
@SneekyRatchet "you dont have to be smart to notice that the wii doesnt have any good 3rd party publishers at all" But you have to be stupid to think that it doesn't have any good ones at all. By the way the same 3rd party publishers for the Wii are the same ones for the PS3/360... newb. And who cares if it doesn't play in HD? What are you gonna do, hang the graphics on your wall? It's a game, not a f-cking movie.
@atomD21 you dont have to be smart to notice that the wii doesnt have any good 3rd party publishers at all, look at great games like bioshock 1&2 and assassins creed 1&2 borderlands, call of duty, resident evil 5, final fantasy, (just to name a few) that only are available on the ps3 and xbox. while the wii has nothing good to offer because its hardware is greatly inferior, it cant even play in HD!! which is pathetic in this generation!
dead or alive xtreme volley ball 3d .... hmmmmm ...
3-D for a hand-held is amazing, but not for a home-based console. Although if nintendo makes a 3-D console it should make the system have better graphics even if you don't have a 3-D TV;)
@atomD21: Its happening: no way in hell its not. N's been constantly talking about how they wont put ssb on a portable system, probably cause none of the hardware would be able to make ssb what it should be. The 3ds will be more than capable.
Who wants to start the SSB 3D rumor mill?
Ummm... @SneekyRatchet... their 3rd party publishers are the same as Sony and MS' 3rd party publishers.
i hope nintendo trips and falls into a hole, and that the hole led to hell because all their third party publishers suck huge @$$!!!
I am pre ordering 2 of them ..one for me the other one on ebay . This is going to be hot !!
Pokemon 3d... I know it's coming and so do you...::Sigh::
Took a while but dang nabbit THE BIG N is back with a VENGEANCE!!
Sounds cool, I can't wait to play it.
not a very big fan of Nintendo, but i'm intrigued.
welcome back indeed
Welcome back, Nintendo.
Nintendo's back... I'm ready for Nintendo to have another 1998'. Should be soon...
I'm excited to see all of the ideas made up with this.
Why so serious?
lol 22 years old just back from afghanistan and i find myself still saying "iiii wannnt iiiiit!"
Finally making games for gamers again hu? its beena really long time Ninty welcome back!
For example the Super Mario Galaxy 2 game came out and GameSpot called it a "new standard for platformers", giving it a perfect 10 and I know i went out and bought it and a lot of people i know all went out and bought it as well. I played it for about 3 hours the first day and then i haven't played sense ( it has been 3 days sense i purchased it). I'll probably pick it back up and play it again soon but just to prove as me for an example Nintendo has to be the first for stuff, the normally do it very well, just to keep their crave alive.
You have to admit though Nintendo is one of those companies that make games and consoles that you know just about everyone will run out and buy for there little ones and then that child will play the game for tons hours straight the first day and then will get tired of it for a while. Then the second family or friends comes over they all play that game and everyone has fun and loves it. Im not putting down Nintendo cause im one of those people i will probable end up going out and checking out the 3DS and then buy it. But somehow i have a feeling that the nintendo created games such as Mariokart, Zelda, and Metroid will be the most enjoyable on the 3DS.
Well done Nintendo, 3DS will rule the world!!
