Parents of mauled British 9-year-old blame game's barking mode for enraging the family mastiff, provoking lip-severing bite.
For years, the mainstream media has blamed violent games for instigating similar behavior. This week, a tabloid report out of the UK blamed one of the least violent games imaginable for a savage attack on a 9-year-old girl…by a dog.
According to the Daily Mail, Megan Walker was peacefully playing a copy of Nintendogs at a friend's house when one of the in-game dogs barked at her. Unfortunately, the bark was in earshot of the friend's bullmastiff, a breed of dog that weighs as much as 130 pounds. The sound reportedly spooked the dog so much that it bit Walker's face, severing a portion of her upper lip.
"I think this game should carry some kind of warning," the girl's grandmother told the Mail. "People should be told not to play it when there are dogs in the room. I blame the game for what happened to Megan. If they hadn't been playing it I don't think the dog would have gone for her."
Luckily, the dog was forced off of Walker by another dog and her friend's relatives, and her lip was successfully reattached in surgery. Less fortunate was the attacking dog, which was put down by a veterinarian shortly after the attack.
US Nintendo reps had not commented on the incident as of press time.
This just in!: Man playing Frogger slaughtered by rabid tree frogs! Experts deem amphibians deadly plague! U.N. approves proposal to exterminate all amphibious creatures on the face of the planet!
Hahahahaha. That's funny born gamer. I feel really bad that they put the poor dog down.He was just being a dog.I also feel really bad for the little girl. That would SUCK.But for the family to make such a big deal of an accident, and for *insert name of person responsible here* to kill the dog for it?Come on! I suppose you want you tube and cell phone apps and every other toy or item in the world that makes dog noises to carry warnings?Maybe aquarium web sites should do the same-the whale noises on one had my dog (100lbs) cocking his head.Who knows what vicious response this may provoke from a less calm dog! Jeez get a grip people. They should have helped the girl, disciplined the dog humanely, and just got on with life.No need for all that. Phoo. Thanks for letting me get all that off my chest Gamespot...
Nintendo have blood on their hands after this. I always knew there was something sinister about them. Their cutesy image was really just a cover for a dark desire to make dogs attack little girls.
The owner is probably blaming the game so they don't get sued. I also blame the girl for playing with a fake dog when there's a real dog in the room. That's just insulting.
this article fails to mention that the dogs owner thinks the girl may have kicked the dog. what irritates me about articles like the daily mail's (but not gamespots because it doesn't play the blame game(psp)(1.0)) is that it goes out of it's way to blame the game, it's like saying:" that guy who got stabbed after seeing that movie was stabbed by that other guy who also just saw that movie was stabbed because of the movie, lets scare people into thinking that the movie can turn you into a killer"
I guess that means I shouldn't play Dragon Quest IX too close to my pet Slime or he might attack me!
Next up on increadly stupid news: Could Nintendogs + Cats be a cause of alarm for parents of children of america? and if so, must we also worry that the nintencats will cause our lovable kittens to scratch our eyes out? More on this as the complaints continue:|
Several thins on this incident. 1) The girl was 9 and when turning on the DS and starting up Nintendogs, I am pretty sure she expected a cute reaction from the real dog. 2) Who would have known that a dog would go berserk on a little girl for hearing a barking noise from Nintendogs? Does anyone look at that harmless game and think "Oh no, this could cause a real dog to bug out." I do not think so. 3) To blame this on the game is absurd. Look at scene in which this occurred. What adult was around when this little girl was sitting up in the morning while everyone else was asleep. This little girl was in the room with her friends dog while her friend was asleep. Do you really let your dog stay in the same room where you are keeping your guest, who is a STRANGER to the dog? Again, not really. 4) Plus, you have to wonder how many people have actually played this game around actual dogs. Be it their own dog or near someone else's dog. This is the first I heard about Nintendogs "causing" this. So how can you blame the game? or even the little girl for that matter?
'a breed of dog that weighs as much as 130 pounds.' They don't tell you how much the dog actually weighed. I bet it was a lot smaller.
When she realised that Megan was being attacked, Ms Melville started kicking him and her second pet dog, named Zena, also attacked Saracen in a bid to save the child. sounds like the dog got more of a beating than anyone
the article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1315826/Girls-lip-torn-dog-heard-barking-Nintendo-DS.html#comments stupid grand mother is stupid and is the girl even regularly around the dog? i guess not she must of Liu kang the s*** out of the dog for it to attack that aggressively i really feel sorry for that dog nonsense
I have a dog; Ok his name is Sasquatch and he weighs about 1/10 what that mastiff weighs, but regardless he goes nuts when every he see animals on the tv. There is this one commercial for Sweet Millions from the NY lottery ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vF6PyIML0hI ) That's his favorite. Anyway, my dog loves to jump on his hind legs and try and touch the tv. If that dog knocked over the tv, could i hold the state of NY accountable? If Nintendo wants to go ahead and apologize as PR damage control that's up tot them but there is no case here. Nowadays though you can get a check for just about anything...
That's like saying: "Oh, I failed to do my homework assignment on time because I was addicted to Halo. I am going to sue the company for making an addicting game!" When it was your fault the whole time.
More like you need to learn to train your freakin' dog morons. Grand Theft Auto complaints are somewhat viable (if the gamer in question is already a whackjob). Nintendogs? It's about petting dogs and taking them on walks. Fail.
@ monson21502.....yea but its a dog that belongs to a family...its not the dogs fault and its not the games fault. plus shouldnt the dog have attacked the tv if it was spook? Story just doesnt check out to me..im still going with the girl had to have done something to provoke the dog. i feel sorry that the dog gets his life cut short because someones brat provoked it enough to fight back
Where was the mother in all of this? let me guess busy on FaceBook on the computer/playing with her iphone?...lol bad parenting & bad dog owner.. now blaming the game.
Another case of bad parenting, a dog of that size should not be near a 9 year child as shown here. Dogs are like all animals, they are unpredictable.
This is so messed up. It's not the games fault, and it's not the dogs fault. It's called noise. Turn on the TV, go outside, and you hear the SAME THING.
"I blame the game for what happened to Megan. If they hadn't been playing it I don't think the dog would have gone for her." Anyone else see the humor in this? Apparently the grandma believes the game just plays itself, which is why its to blame, not the person playing or the guardians supervising.... An unfortunate accident yes, but not really newsworthy.
The parent(s) was not available for comment, the quote is from the grandmother. Probably a very flustered grandmother who just saw her grandaughter's lip torn off by a big dog.
omg, like what game has a dog in it that dont bark? next to p***ing on every tree, thats just what they do. STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!
parents always blame the game industry, they always see the bad side of it, and now they are blaming kid games? what's next?, parents blaming pacman classic.
This is ridiculous! This is just people putting blame on every one except themselves. People need some self responsibility!
@ChiliDragon, Exactly what I was thinking!! Dear god, what the HELL is wrong w/ her parents?? I mean for even having a dog like that around a 9 yr old is insane. Hell, there's few adults that can stack up against defending themselves against a dog like much less a child (if you've never seen one 'google' them...you'll see what I mean). I mean, mind you they're not 'bad dogs' per se (that all on the owners who raise them) but from my understanding of them they can be quick to get defensive and aggressive if they feel like they're threatened or challenged. I tell you people's stupidity know no bounds. Honestly, I don't know what I can say is worse: these people's poor ass parental judgment or their pet ownership skills (both seem SEVERELY lacking, at any rate)....but sadly the poor dog had to lose due to both.
Stupid morons treat their dog like sh*t = dog gets put down. It's tragic and it's happening more and more in this country. This, however, is the lamest excuse yet.
"Ms Melville was unavailable for comment, but it is understood that she told police that Megan may have kicked Saracen and that is why he attacked her. " Yeah why wasnt that in the story. Moral of the story, dont kick a dog bigger than you, keep your lip
Yes, because leaving a child alone with a large dog bred to fight bulls is a lot more responsible than the sound effects in a video game...
