One more time: the only relevant info is the total software $ sales per platform. Using this indicator, the 360 and PS3 come before the Wii by a comfortable margin. The information presented in this article is borderline unprofessional. All the talk about top 10 selling games is loss of time & energy.
US retailers rack up another record year as Nintendo dominates hardware and software charts; Sony sees December system sales shrink.
Last year was a wild one for the gaming industry. Despite a slumping economy, a rash of studio closures, and heavy layoffs at many major publishers, the actual business of gaming had never been better.
The industry-tracking NPD Group backed up that assertion today with the release of its full 2008 sales figures, which show that US retailers raked in $21.33 billion in sales of gaming hardware, software, and accessories during the year (not including the PC market). That's up 19 percent from the nearly $18 billion brought in during 2007.
Although hardware sales were up 11 percent year-over-year to $7.81 billion, the big gains were made in software. Game software sales were up 26 percent over the course of 2008, totaling $10.96 billion.
Spearheading the charge was a quartet of Nintendo games for the Wii. In fact, the best-selling game of 2008 was actually released back in February of 2007, given that Wii Play (which comes bundled with a Wii Remote controller) sold 5.28 million copies. The remainder of the top five best sellers of 2008 included Mario Kart Wii (5 million), Wii Fit with Balance Board (4.53 million), the Wii fighter Super Smash Bros. Brawl (4.17 million), and Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360 (3.29 million).
For comparison, the best-seller of 2007, Microsoft's Halo 3 for the Xbox 360, topped the list with 4.82 million sold. Wii Play was the runner-up last year, with sales totaling 4.12 million.
Looking at just the December 2008 sales figures, the NPD Group data shows that the record-breaking year ended suitably strong. Game-industry sales were up 9 percent to $5.29 billion, driven primarily by $2.75 billion in software sales, a 15 percent year-over-year increase. Wii Play was the monthly champ, with 1.46 million sold during December. Other strong performers in the key holiday-sales month included Call of Duty: World at War for the Xbox 360 (1.33 million sold), Wii Fit (999,000 sold), and Mario Kart Wii (979,000 sold).
Hardware sales were up more modestly for the month, showing a 2 percent increase over December 2007 to finish at $1.88 billion. The Nintendo DS and Wii both posted banner months, with the portable notching 3.04 million sold (a new record for hardware) and the console trailing at 2.15 million. Both Nintendo systems sold significantly more last month than they had the previous December, as did Microsoft's Xbox 360 (which moved 1.44 million systems).
Those gains were partially offset by the performance of Sony's systems, all of which sold fewer units in December 2008 than in December 2007. The PlayStation Portable sold 1.02 million, down from the previous year's 1.06 million. The PlayStation 3 was also down slightly, selling 726,000 systems versus the prior December's 798,000. Although the current-generation systems were treading water, sales of the nine-year-old PlayStation 2 sank considerably, down to 410,000 from the previous December's 1.1 million.
Sony was quick to put a positive spin on the numbers, releasing a statement within a half hour of the NPD numbers going public. The electronics giant emphasized that PS3 sales for the year totaled 3.6 million, up 40 percent from 2007. Additionally, Sony said that full-year software sales for the PS3 were up 115 percent, though it gave no specific dollar amounts for either period.
NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier provided some additional perspective on the numbers, noting that the 2008 total of nearly $11 billion in software sales is more than the entire gaming industry brought in over the course of 2005. Additionally, Frazier responded to those who would say that the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises are losing steam by noting that December was their best month yet in terms of total dollar sales, with the pair representing 16 percent of all software revenue for the month.
"We get asked a lot why there are so many layoffs and studio closings occurring in the industry when it has just realized another record-breaking year," Frazier said. "This is not a case of the rising tide lifting all boats. The increases are not being enjoyed equally by all manufacturers and publishers."

I am 22 and I do not have any console from this generation.... only DS if you like! I think the only console worth buying is 360, even though I am a Nintendo fan. But i won't buy one cause i only have a crt T.V. 14'' in my aparment. So Nintendo says that the only think that matters (among others of course!!!) is to get one Wii in each home... So how they suposse to do such a thing while they forgot about the hardcore fan base that was so many years by their side(... lol too dramatic..;p) and they only make ''girly'' games! I don't say to stop making cassual games, but makes 4-5 just for us.. god!!! Neither Galaxy nor Metroid were non-cassual. It's sad.. I only hope that the next Zelda title won't be ''cassualized''.. Have fun playing video-games.. Cya
WII PLAY IS NOT A GAME ITS A CONTROLLER WITH A DEMO DISC OF MINI GAMES IN IT HOW IS IT ACTUALLY INCLUDED IN SALES DISCUSSIONS OF GAMES!?!?!?!???!?!?!?
I have a 360 and a wii I barely touch my wii. In fact I have only played and completed Super Mario Galaxy. I have always loved and owned Nintendo products but I think this time around the fact that the lack of online capability and no high definition is kind of taking its toll on the little white box. I also think that part of the reason why I wanted one so much was due to the fact that you couldn't hardly find one on the market for over a year (unless ofcourse you pre-ordered one)
Mario Kart and Brawl are games that are mandatory for any good Nintendo fan, but that's about it, while the other consoles had several other good games that deserved the purchase but didn't do amazingly well, but they sold some good amount of copies. What's happening is not good for the industry nor gamers, sure as hell is good for Nintendo. Also the addition of Wii Play in these lists is stupid.
What i think is funny to all the people who diss wii owners is that probably half the people who own one are never even on this site. After all, the Wii targets casual gamers. (im a Playstation 3 owner myselft though) lol
Some of those game titles shouln't even be there. who ever conducted this study, should conduct another, of how many r still playing those games?
@talonkard044 You said "Yuck Too brought up COD:WaW and that's funny... Look at how many total consoles sold per system - 360 and PS3 - and wow... There is a higher percentage of PS3 owners that own the game over 360 people. Hmm. Math does work I guess lol" Are you serious? You relate consoles SOLD to consoles OWNED by calculating software of COD:WaW sold to hardware of consoled SOLD? Math works against YOU I suppose. If you said "there is a higher percentage of NEW PS3 owners..." blah blah blah, then you might've been correct. Oh wait, you're NOT. If we were to calculate things in the way that YOU did it (even if it is terribly flawed to compare the progress of the two in the way that you did it), you'd still be wrong. There is a higher percentage of 360 owners who's consoles were puchased in December that potentially own COD:WaW compared to PS3 owners. That's not even taking entire 08 and worldwide statistics into account, so your argument is unfeasible. When did YOU flunk math =P
lol @talonkard044 Your fanboyish comments deprive you of ANY credibility to state that the PS3 is the greatest gaming console this gen. Why? Because of Blu-Ray? What someone would consider their favorite console is purely subjective, but if one WERE to be labelled as the 'greatest', surely the NPD would contradict you. I guess most of North America is plagued by 'sheer stupidity' for choosing something that plays games on dual-layer DVD's rather than the UBER-SUPERIOR blu-ray format. Wow, who knew that having an internet browser and blu-ray capabilities were to determine who'd come out as king. There are as many 360 fanboys who tip their hats to the PS3 as their are PS3 fanboys that like what the 360 has to offer. "Go to the 3rd or 4th page in the latest issue of PLAY magazine with Afro Samurai on the cover and they summerize perfectly whay PS3 is the greatest console." Wow. Because YOU know, there are absolutely ZERO credible sources that state otherwise, or better yet, that each console is equally great. In my opinion, it is 'fanboyish' to say that any console is superior. Even if the PS3 and 360 had no exclusives and shared similar gaming libraries, I guarantee that no console would come out on top because people would prefer XBL over PSN, or the 360 controller over the PS3's, etc. If you believe that the PS3 is the best GAMING console this gen, then state your reasons as to why. Don't tout it as having a better storage medium or whatnot. Storage hasn't been much of a problem really. An internet browser shouldn't be included in factoring which is the better GAMING console. Whether you want to pay for XBL's online experience or live with the cost-free PSN is purely subjective. I own a PS3, just so i can avoid getting an RROD. I'm waiting to see if any Jasper's fail before I get a 360. It's unfortunate that it has such a high failure rate, but that doesn't hamper my desire to purchase one in the near-future because I feel that it's a great gaming machine and I'm excited to play Gears on my own time rather than going to a friends house. "I can admit that 360 has a few cool games - Gears is aight but Left 4 Dead and Braid are cool as hell - but how often do 360bots admit PS3 is cool?" I'd say it's about even. How many sonybots do you see admitting that the 360 is cool? None. Because fanboys don't compliment the competition. fanboys are fanboys. But mature 360 OWNERS will come to admit that motorstorm, MGS4, and killzone 2 just as often as people from the other camp will compliment Gears of War, Mass Effect and Halo.
The xbox is great with the technology involved in it but the games it has lacks. Almost every game released on Xbox is released on the Playstation. The playstaion however has the amazing racthet and clank games which I believe is the best game. By the way Rafael Nadal the 2nd seed in tennis has a Playstation. He blogs on the heraldsun newspaper each day has has mentioned that he has a playstation. I live in Melbourne and heraldsun is a melbourne newspaper.
@ab3r Ok, seriously you have a problem....the Wii has great games available for now. 50 games are coming for the future while the 360/PS3 have 15.....15??? So, that is your fault and loss
I really don't if the dumb 360 win over the PS3, it just a dang Console LOSER!!! other hand the Wii sucks, i trade in the Wii with smash brothers and rock band with it, and i got my self the PS3,and really, i don't see the difference between, cuz they both have good graphics, but the only thing problem about the 360 avatars, it feels like im playing the Wii again on the 360 and the homes has only a picture on the background and people go to them. BORING! the Play Station Home other hand, they really know what they were thinking cuz, we have virture home that show the whole place and u can meet other by going placees like the mall, bowling etc. then u press start, see which games the other player have and don't! Also the Mii's that a big joke, Nintendo didn't think it well, only time to use the Mii on games only and like the 360 or the PS3 u just make one and that is, that the dumb idea ever! BOTTOM LINE, the Wii sucks, and the 360 fanboys are retards for saying that the only big problem PS3 has is Blue Ray disc, well dumb head having that is a good idea so we can have HD Graphic in games and movies! Pop in Halo and Pop Metal Gear Solid 4 and u can see the big differrnces.
Another victory for the great Xbox360 over the PS3!! :D Yup, the PS Brand's fall from the top is guaranteed now. It will never be dominant again. :)
Wow... can't talk about video game consoles anywhere without the pre-teens coming in with their biased opinions thinking that everyone will agree with their superior logic. I own a 360 and a Wii, and most of my friends own PS3s. They're all great systems in their own right. I really only got 360 because of the hope for Fable II being good, as well as a few other games (disappointing). The Wii is fun in its own way... I can play with people who don't care about video games at all, and it's fun for everyone. It's a great drinking / party system (yes, I'm 21). Enjoy the consoles for what each one offers. Which one is best is subjective.
We can always depend on PS3 and 360 fanboys to put a negative spin on Nintendo's success. Such as "Oh, no this means the future of video games will rely on motion sensing games that require me to move my arm to play. I dont want to gain a noticeable bicep that might cost me my virginity."
Nintendo Wii really did own the software in 2008, and I have to say that their selection wasn't the best I've seen. But their 2009 lineup so far looks killer. Starting with a one-two punch of Deadly Creatures then the next day House of the Dead Overkill. Then in March we get Madworld, Sonic and the Black Knight(I still have a lil hope left in Sonic), Ready to Rumble Revolution, and Final Fantasy CC Echoes in Time. And sometime after that we'll be seeing The Conduit, Punch Out!!, and Eduardo the Samurai Toaster(well I'm excited about it). Those are just some of the 3rd party projects, so who knows what infamous secret projects Nintendo has yet to reveal.
@willkorn Not being able to read properly is also dumb. If you'd read my post you would have seen that I did not call talonkard044 dumb for not sharing my opinion. I called him dumb for not backing up his statements with any form of proof. Secondly you would have also noticed that in the only direct comparison I made between the PS3 and the Xbox 360 (in regards to their game libraries) I said the following: "That's the major advantage of having a larger, and SUBJECTIVELY superior, games library". Note the use of the word "subjectively". So please before you get on your high horse make sure you have good cause :D.
@GodLike500 Loyal Nintendo fans means that we have been buying Nintendo games and consoles ever since we discovered about it. Fanboy means that you say that your console is superior while the others suck. I'm not a fanboy because I like and play the 360 and PS3. The reason why I defend the Wii is because fanboys bash it...and I counter their statements with facts.
@PSGamer99 Just what I expect from a guy with no facts.... You said that only first-party games are great, you're wrong since I can list a huge number of great Wii games. Wii owners are not true gamers? I'm not saying that PS3 and 360 gamers aren't true gamers BUT if theres any true gamer..its a Wii gamer. Why? Because we're buying a system thats way less powerful and not HD. We're buying a "weak" system because we care about gameplay MORE than graphics and we're loyal Nintendo fans.
frazzle and talonkard , dumb is calling someone else dumb for having different tastes, and not being able to spell. i have all systems and the most fun i have... is when i play with friends. wii games may be kinda lame at times but at least my grandma can understand and play it, and thats cool. And as for 360, my favorite games that i play are exclusive to 360 or are on ps3, but like you pointed out, i had a 360 first so guess what system i'm buying games for and what system i'm watching blu-ray on. dude, the only reason everyone and their mom doesn't already have a ps3 is because not everyone can afford it and it's human nature to dispise things they don't have, can't afford, or don't understand. if your opinion means anything i'm stupid for loving my xbox, dumb for enjoying my wii, and in my opinion... retarted for buying an expensive systems that i barely play because i'm having more fun with my 360, and wii....i love the ps3 don't get me wrong, but if it wasn't for the blu-ray, i wouldn't even own a ps3 because 360 has the same games out on it that i would be playing on ps3. unlike the ps2, i could have waited before buying ps3
@talonkard044 "What's funny is that Sony is in the same position financially now that they were 8 years ago when the PS2 had a few years on the shelf...They were loosing money per system, but not as much. They are doing better with the PS3." And the source of this information is....? "Perception and hype is going against PS3...That and price. Dumb fanboys of Wii and 360 not included, the PS3 is the best gaming console this gen. To say otherwise is sheer stupidity." And why is that? You've provided nothing to back up such a bold statement. In my book that's sheer stupidity. :D "All of you 360 players talking smack about PS3 prolly have had your machines replaced how many times?" Even with repairs, you'd still have more play time with an Xbox 360 than on a PS3. That's the major advantage of having a larger, and subjectively superior, games library. "How is it not being able to play blu ray on the same console?" Most gamers buy a console to play games, not watch movies. The sad thing is I've used my PS3 to watch Blu-Ray movies more often than to play games. Now that is concerning. "Go to the 3rd or 4th page in the latest issue of PLAY magazine with Afro Samurai on the cover and they summerize perfectly whay PS3 is the greatest console." Why would I need someone else to tell me what is good to play? Are you really incapable of forming your own opinion without being spoonfed by a publication of some sort? Not everyone is a lemming. "I just wish people weren't brainwashed into thinking PS3 is so bad. It's sad really." Irony at its best. "I can admit that 360 has a few cool games - Gears is aight but Left 4 Dead and Braid are cool as hell - but how often do 360bots admit PS3 is cool?" As often as PS3 fanboys like you admit the Xbox 360 is cool. Love that random instance of ebonics though. Very hip buddy. :P "I love the new Xbox experience by the way... Ripping off Wii with those horrid Mii like avatars and the little sounds whenever you do somthing isn't annoying whatsoever." Nintendo didn't create the concept of avatars. And FYI walking around in a pseudo-interactive ad space is just as annoying. Wow you've really got to love that Red Bull ;).
Yuck Too brought up COD:WaW and that's funny... Look at how many total consoles sold per system - 360 and PS3 - and wow... There is a higher percentage of PS3 owners that own the game over 360 people. Hmm. Math does work I guess lol
What's funny is that Sony is in the same position financially now that they were 8 years ago when the PS2 had a few years on the shelf...They were loosing money per system, but not as much. They are doing better with the PS3. Sony has just about broken even on production costs for PS3. Perception and hype is going against PS3...That and price. Dumb fanboys of Wii and 360 not included, the PS3 is the best gaming console this gen. To say otherwise is sheer stupidity. All of you 360 players talking smack about PS3 prolly have had your machines replaced how many times? How is it not being able to play blu ray on the same console? Go to the 3rd or 4th page in the latest issue of PLAY magazine with Afro Samurai on the cover and they summerize perfectly whay PS3 is the greatest console. I just wish people weren't brainwashed into thinking PS3 is so bad. It's sad really. I can admit that 360 has a few cool games - Gears is aight but Left 4 Dead and Braid are cool as hell - but how often do 360bots admit PS3 is cool? Not very often. I love the new Xbox experience by the way... Ripping off Wii with those horrid Mii like avatars and the little sounds whenever you do somthing isn't annoying whatsoever. :P
Why do people think that Sony is losing all this money and could possibly go bankrupt? Sony along with Microsoft don't just sell gaming systems. Sony is probably one of the most successful companies in the world. I have an Xbox360 and a Wii and still don't think so negatively about Sony.
I don't doubt that motion sensor controllers could be the future, and I definitely commend Nintendo both for their ingenuity and their obvious mastery of marketing. However, the games that I played on the Wii, while mostly 1st person shooters, were very difficult to control. Maybe it takes more than the week or so that I played to get used to the controls, but I just feel that they should have made them easier to use; unless the motion controllers simply don't work well with 1st person shooters. But couple that with the fact that it has last gen graphics and as many people here have pointed out, questionable 3rd party games, and I have to stick to my guns and say that I don't understand the appeal of the Wii except to all but the most casual gamers who prefer pretty colors to blowing stuff up.
Sony will soon announce a price drop for the PS3 to 199.99. The system will come with no hard drive,no blueray, and no backwards compatibility. It also will have no disk drive (you'll have to spin the game manually),no power cord,no cables and no controller. Sony spokeperson Ben Dover said about the price drop "you HAVE to buy it because it's made by SONY, you numbnuts!" Industry insiders were skeptical about the price drops ability to increase sales, mostly because Sony sales people were seen killing anyone who attempted to walk out of a Gamestop retail store without a PS3 under their arm. One insider said "killing them decreases add on sales, they should only be attempting to maim!"
i wonder if nintendo is killing third parties on purpose. cause a lot of third parties are going down cause of the casual game market being so weak on fake gamers dumb purchase of a wii just to play wii sports.
And of course people drone on and on about how much the wii supposedly sucks etc etc. Can't you just shut up for once and realize that if Nintendo can release so many great games for the system and we have seen some great 3rd party releases like No More Heroes and CoD: WoW that M rated titles that makes full use of the wii and are FUN are highly possible. People that make remarks about how "all the gamers are on the 360 need to wake up". All three consoles have some great games but you can only push pixels for so long. Ideas like the wii is where the future of gaming is headed. get over it.
@ronnet you get a BIGGER slice if you were on Wii. if a game were to release on wii, the potential that 20m+ people can play that game equals to sales.
Nintendo has about 10 titles that sell a rediculous amount of copies. But what I want to know is how much all the other titles sell. Microsoft is a hardcore consoles, a lot of it's owners buy too much games but they also buy lesser titles. Nintendo might sell a lot of their own titles but if their third party support isn't selling enough then things might not be as good as they seem.
@hatieshorrer while the wii has its positives, i just cant take it seriously. it seems the only good games for it are first-party which isnt enough, and the only reason software sales are up for it is because of the sheer number of wii owners there are, which can be attributed to the wide demographic the wii appeals to. sorry, but true gamers play PS3/360
@mysteryman2024 The motion sensing controls on the Nintendo Wii are very responsive and their exist four so called terrable games that are saling better then every other game on every other console. Your right you dont get it but, that doesnt change that the Wii is a great game console.
Yuck_too is right, it is the games that make the system. A console can be as powerful as it wants or have a motion sensor controller that doesn't work very well; but if it's hard to program for (PS3) or just has terrible games (Wii), there's going to be problems somewhere. I don't consider myself a fanboy since I've jumped consoles every generation to whichever has the games that I want, but I just can't see what people see in Nintendo these past few generations.
Where is MGS 4??? Sorry Sony fans. I guess your last hope is KillZone 2. I have a prediction that MGS4 will be release for the Xbox360. Konami will release a statement saying it will port it to the Xbox360.
--Ps3_PLAYA1O1-- They had better care...a company that does not care about what it's customers want does not stay in business long.
Playing Xbox One games on somebody else's console will also require a check-in every hour. Full Story
