Research group reveals 2K's newest basketball sim the top-selling game last month; total software sales slide 25 percent; Xbox 360 sells 270,000.
The NPD Group reported United States industry sales figures for October today, revealing NBA 2K13 was the best-selling game in a month that saw overall declines. Sales of 2K's latest professional basketball simulator rose 60 percent over last year's version in terms of dollars and units. NPD analyst Liam Callahan said this uptick in sales can be contributed to a favorable comparison to last year's game, which was surrounded by the uncertainty of a lockout.
Nintendo's new role-playing games Pokemon Black and White 2 were also bright spots for October, helping spur portable softwares to a 37 percent increase year-over-year. Additionally, Callahan said Skylanders Giants performed well during the month, selling over 160 percent more units than last year's Skylanders game during its debut month.
Overall, total software sales for October fell 25 percent year-over-year to $451.8 million, compared to $605.6 million last year. Callahan attributed this overall downturn to difficult comparisons to October 2011, which saw the release of top-performers Battlefield 3 and Batman: Arkham City.
In terms of hardware, all platforms saw declines year-over-year to the tune of a 37 percent dip. However, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, and 3DS each saw higher sales over September's figures. According to Callahan, this is evidence of "increasing momentum" moving into the holiday season.
NPD did not release specific sales figures for hardware, but Microsoft separately revealed that the Xbox 360 shifted 270,000 units during the month. This is more than any other console and marks the system's 12th consecutive month at the top spot. Microsoft also claimed that the Xbox 360 commands 56 percent of current-generation console marketshare.
Microsoft further added that total retail spend for the Xbox 360 platform during October (which includes hardware, software, and accessories) came in at $315 million.
Looking into November, Callahan said there is reason to be optimistic for software, due to the release of several high-profile games. ·
“While October was another month of steep declines in retail sales, we are looking forward to November 2012 with the results of Assassin’s Creed III, and Halo 4, which were positively reviewed, as well as the results of Call of Duty: Black Ops II," Callahan said. "These software titles, along with the Wii U launch on November 18, will provide a much needed boost to retail sales.”
Of note, Dishonored was October's only non-sequel to crack the top ten.

270k is 56% meaning PS3+Wii is 210k. You figure that PS3 is 150-180k and that means Wii is 30-60k. Wow, the Wii is basically dead. It is amazing really. Xbox 360 came out a year before the Wii and now it is still going pretty strong and will last at least 1 year longer than the WIi. I guess the Wii was really just a fad. I can't wait for 2013 and the xbox360 actually pass the Wii in total unit sales in the US.
iv jumped the console ship and went out bought a alienware x51 and stuck a nvidia gtx 670 evga ftw. Leaving the console generation so long made me jump and so many have. I love being able to download texture packs on pc for example maldo for crysis 2 is almost 3 gigs in new textures that are purely amazing. Next gen graphics now.
Good for you.
@meankilleR which model of alienware x51 did you got? I was interested in it but highest power supply on offer was 330 watt one ruling out possibility of gtx 670.
@meankilleRpc gaming aint worth it. when you go out and buy a gaming rig 6 months later its out of date and you gotta hear people say my pc is better then yours. least with console u get the same thing for 4 to 8 years
@monson21502 @meankilleR uh uh if u get a mid range card then it can last you upto atleast a good 3 -4 years, I mean playable at abt40-60 fps without too much compromise......while a top end card would last you a solid 4 years and almost at the highest visual standards albeit a slight drop in framerate.....And FYI: WE DO NOT SAY YAY MY PC IS SOOOO MUCH BETER THAN YOURS......we are more mature than that...just look up any of the forums of steam or overclock.net or techpowerup , we help each other, infact i myself have recieved numerous good advice from tons guys out there......
I'm really surprised that Borderlands 2 isn't higher on the list. That is a great game that people love, compared to MOH Warfighter, which hasn't gotten as good of reviews selling more units. What's up with that?
Industry did this to themselves; shovelware, 60$ 4 hour campaigns with death match, games that don't work, over priced hardware, fake paid for reviews are now simply expected....
smdfh looking at the november release tittle its like this publishers are trying to crowed them selves out of business
i been saving and now that i got enough cash for the 360 am just waiting for the holiday specials but no full price 2012 games for me just yet, i have a lot of 2011 games to catch up to
My brother and I got RE6, Borderlands 2, Dishonored and Doom 3 BFG so we did our part for the economy! And for November I got AC3, Halo 4 and Black Ops 2. God I love this hobby!
I gotta ask sports fans, why do you keep buying these games?? It's just the same game over and over and over and over and over again.
NBA 2k12 will be $25 Nov 22-25 at Walmart. I don't know about Best Buy or Amazon though.
Definitely picking it up though.
