OnLive now playable on tablets and phones
Game-streaming service arrives on Android devices with iOS version expected soon; 25 games optimized for touch; Lego Batman: The Videogame included with free app download.
OnLive launched its on-demand game-streaming service as an application for the Windows and Mac operating systems last year. Since then, the company has released a dedicated console for the service, allowing for play directly on a TV. The list of gameplay-supporting devices is about to expand yet again, with today's announcement that OnLive will be launching a new application for tablets and phones.
The new OnLive app is available for Android devices now and expected to launch for iOS products soon. Although previous reports revealed that the OnLive mobile app would allow games to be played using a new wireless controller or onscreen virtual controls, OnLive announced today that 25 titles have been specifically optimized for touch input. Reworked titles include L.A. Noire, LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and 5-7, and Defense Grid Gold.
The new Universal OnLive Wireless Controller is said to use "exclusive adaptive wireless technology" to automatically find and connect to OnLive-compatible tablets, smartphones, PCs, Macs, TVs and Blu-ray players. Specific compatible devices were not detailed, but GameSpot can confirm that it works over Bluetooth on iOS devices and Bluetooth or USB connections on Android devices. The new controller is set to be available soon for $50 and £40 in the US and UK respectively, and it will support most of OnLive's 200-strong catalogue of games.
OnLive also announced that the game-streaming service is compatible with high-speed cellular services. Such devices as the HTC Jetstream, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and Motorola Xoom are said to be capable of streaming games in HD resolution over 4G LTE connections.
As a special push for the launch of the mobile app, those who download the free player will also gain free access to the Lego Batman: The Videogame.
[CORRECTION 12/8]: This article originally stated that those who downloaded the OnLive app would receive free access to L.A. Noire in addition to Lego Batman. It also reported that the OnLive app was already available on the iOS. GameSpot regrets the errors.
@offspring94 @XanderZane Did you even look into it before posting? They DO have a bundle, and it's actually CHEAPER than the $15 price point you suggested. It's all-you-can-play for over 100 games. It blows my mind how much gamers talk about OnLive when they obviously have no idea what they're talking about. Gamespot's Onlive "announcements" are obnoxious, but at least look this stuff up before you post something absurd. ************************************************ I'm well aware of that bundle. You do get access to 100+ games, but they are old. You get access to a select few of the older games and a very minimal amount of the newer games. Almost all the games are a year or more old. Here are some of the decent games on Onlive. NBA 2K11, Bioshock, Pirates, Stalker, The Maw, Fallout 1 & 2, Hitman 2/Blood Money, F.E.A.R. 2 & 3, OddWorld, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, Tomb Raider, Trine, The Witcher, World of Goo. Then there is a ton of games no one even heard of or want to play. Here are just a few Grotesque Tactics, Helldorado, Fishdom H20, Dimensity, Crazy Cats Love, Super Granny 6, Saw. Here's the link. http://www.onlive.com/games/playpack#&tab=top_games It's only $9.99 a month. It's a good deal if you have the system to handle the stream. Still, you never own any of these games. You are renting them. The fact is you'll have to wait over a year to play new games like Witcher 2, NBA 2K12, Call of Duty MW3, BF3, Fallout New Vegas, Borderland 2, etc..
@Randori_humar... Most people aren't capped at home on their wireless connections. I'm sorry that you are. But still... 150GB's of data is more than enough to use onlive and whatever else you want as long as you're not running servers 24/7. I would think most people will be using onlive over a wifi connection instead of the cellular network.
It's borderline worthless on my phone...I can watch the Lego Batman cinematics, so at least I have that to enjoy, lol. I'll try it again when I can connect my phone to wifi.
playing all great games running good specs on ipad ? thats something
I love onlive, I can use my content on my laptop, tablet and phone now... I don't notice any delay and even though the video quality isn't as good as you'd get from your console or pc, it still looks good. I'm gonna start getting games on the service and using my tablet or laptop to play the games. I used to be a hater, but now I am enlightened :)
FU** ON LIVE! AND FU** EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTS THIS CRAP!
This thing eats up battery like Pac-Man eats power pellets, but it works REALLY WELL. Seriously. The control is a little loose, but that's to be expected when you don't have a thumbstick. Even on a smartphone, it looks nice. And it surprisingly doesn't use up as much data as I expected.
i just checked the android market. not there yet, but i used to make fun of onlive. i have used it to play demos and man alive, it is pretty snazzy. when i get my xoom for my birthday, i have no idea how i am going to get through my senior year of college. supposed to use my tablet to download my textbooks and i will be playing games in class. i will download that app. totally.

Onlive look good on my HTC EVO :)
I wouldn't be suprised if Microsoft (or Sony) would buy Onlive..
PROBLEM! The vast majority of people are under DATA CAPS! As more services are products are becoming "Cloud Based" or streamable they may all be good but are truly competing for the same bits as my Online Hard Drive backups (work related), and Netflix, Hulu,Orb, and Office 356 (also work related), and well, you surely get the point and that doesn't even include the multi-gigabyte games and movies that I already download from Steam, XBL, Zune and PSN. If everything is going out to the cloud, I am only allowed so much activity a month. WHERE I LIVE, I have 150 GB per month at home and 2 GB per month on my phone. Onlive is really kinda pointless at this time, nothing really against it, the infrastructure just isn't really there yet. If I were to play games Onlive, I would be getting fined, or disconnected period. I don't know about anyone else, but this "Cloud" stuff HAS to stop or else internet providers will have to offer unlimited plans again. Or I'm just going to have to drop more services.
Whomever thinks this tech isn't going to last or is skeptical about it just wait and see Sony and Microsoft will both be doing it on their next consoles. I'll admit cloud gaming isn't perfect yet, but it's getting there faster than I thought it would. Onlive may not be the cloud gaming choice of the future but it just advanced gaming into a new era.
Why would Onlive ever come to Xbox, PS3, or Wii? I don't think those companies would be too keen on making competition within their own respective ecosystems. I could definitely see Microsoft implementing streaming games between WP7, PC, and XBOX as the process gets more refined, though.
Wow, Onlive games are incredibly pixelated on my phone...none of the text is readable and I keep getting disconnected from the app.

So how much did OnLive pay for this announcement?
Wow, so now you can play L.A.Noire on the iPhone ??? Seriously, technology has grown by leaps and bounds !!!
Talk about taking a concept too far.
My phone battery can barley keep up with watching youtube videos. Wanna destroy your battery in 20 seconds's or less? here u go
It's almost like Netflix, the only difference is they want you to pay almost full price for each game instead of just charging you $15 a month to have access to ALL 200 games. If they changed their payment setup to be like Netflix, they'd make a bundle. With Netflix, I don't have to pay $5-$10 for a movie just to watch it. I pay $15 a month to have access to 1000's upon 1000's of movies, t.v., specials and documentaries. I love it. The picture quality is decent with no interruption and no commercials and I can also order DVD's when the movie can't be streamed. What's even cooler is I can watch multiple movies at the same time from different devices. My wife can watch her movies in the bedroom and I can watch mine in the den. Even my little girl can watch her cartoons on my 3DS or in her bedroom using my XBox360 or PS3. I was skeptical about OnLive, but they are almost there. If all broadband becomes as fast as Verizon's FIOS and they can change their payment terms to be like Netflix, they will easily make millions. I'd gladly pay $10-$15 a month to have access to 200+ (or even 1000's) of PC games that I can play anytime. You could easily beat 5-7 games a month, which would normally cost you $300-$400 to purchase the game at retail. I don't think OnLive should be on game consoles though. It could work I guess, but I rather consoles stay as their own entity.
Hmm... I was bored with the original idea of OnLive, because it smacked of the original, failed "WebTV" service from years ago... but this is suddenly interesting. While it's hard to take my Xbox or PS3 on the road during business trips, I could totally see it on my iPad. It's a big enough screen with high enough resolution that it would look great.
Um, Gamespot, you either broke some news that isn't ready to be broken or you are incorrect in your report, because you said: A) That OnLive will be available on iOS today. It's not. It's only available on Android at the moment. B) That people who download the app will get free access to L.A. Noire, which is also not correct - just LEGO Batman.
Wow!!
How fast does your Internet have to be to play onlive in HD?
As a concept, I'm skeptical of OnLive because it's an attempt to make games a service as opposed to a product. If there's one thing the past few years have shown me, it's that attempting to do that results in less value for money and less quality in your games. However, I think this has potential, and if it expands it could really mean the death of portable game systems. That makes me a bit sad, but no matter how awesome the Vita is, it's not going to equal playing a full HD quality console/PC game on a tablet/phone. That said, I'm sure this sucks up battery life like nobody's business, so this is probably something I wouldn't be doing much on my phone.
who cares?
thats a very good idea leeko
Okay Onlive you're almost there, next how bout supporting PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, that way you'll be like Netflix except you stream games for play instead of movies.
I've finished both games but I will definitely try out LA Noir on my Sony Tablet, it sounds pretty amazing to get those kinds of graphics on a tablet. Damn man, I remember playing Duke 3D and marveling at the graphical fidelity of that game... how far technology has come in the last 15 or so years...it's unbelievable.
sweet
I hope they're working with Sony to get OnLive on PS3 and PS Vita too.
People want to play L.A. Noire on a tiny, less than 5 inch phone screen?
Finally onlive venturing into something that could be very interesting and maybe huge revenues...
if this thing works with the xperia play im n.
I'm only stoked because now you have the chance to use your ipad on the go as a gaming system. That is just complete genius. I love the idea and I'm sure this is JUST a start to this amazing service :). Can't wait to purchase the controller for my ipad :D
@DrKill09 - WiFi hotspots. Which, if you don't live in the middle of nowhere, are everywhere.
The idea of playing games on my iPad propped up with the smart cover and just carrying a controller in my bag is pretty intriguing.
How will this work on phones if Onlive uses a ton of bandwidth, and phones data plans are extremely limited now days?
I like that Onlive is trying this. I really do. But as cool as streaming a pc game to a phone might sound, it would be a nightmare to plsy eith touch controls. I'm really curious to see how something like L.A. Noire would look on my iPhone.
@wombinator04 I won't be using it on the road for that reason, though when I go to relatives houses I can play a few of the games I have on there.
Inb4 people who comment negatively on this even though this will not hinder their life whatsoever.
Don't have a smartphone or a tablet. I have a laptop and a DS if I want to game on the go. Also, cloud gaming is cloud gaming. You don't really own anything besides the products used to play it. Maybe this is the future of gaming, but I don't think we are there yet. There are going to be multiple hurdles to onlive before it's fully embraced by the gaming community.
OnLive actually is important now? Interesting.
sounds fun, but i bet you people will stop quickly because of the touchscreen and the size of the screen in general.
INB4 no body using this because It eats up all of your data and battery.
LA Noire on my iPhone? Oh hell yeah.
Interesting--And here I thought OnLive was just going to die.
Whoops, I lied. I'm actually hella stoked for this stuff. LA NOIRE + PHONE = HELLA STOKED
