Until I hear the official report on the PlayStation 4. all of the guess work isn't going to sway me until I hear it from Sony. I've heard people say the new ps4 sure he is going to have direct download only, be based on old technology,or it won't be near as powerful as the ps3. people who deal in such rumors are obviously threatened by the thought that Sony will launch first with a superior device. As for Blu ray being an old technology, none of us wants to go through the whole DVD/HD-DVD/Blu ray controversy again. I think it'll be quite some time before Hollywood is interested in upgrading the disk format for their movies. So if anything Sony will probably introduce a new Blu ray player with a higher capacity yet compatible with old Blu ray disc.
Sources say Sony to ship new console next year; company flirted with idea of download-only system, but decided against it over bandwidth concerns.
The PlayStation 4 will hit store shelves next year, sources have told the Wall Street Journal. The unnamed tipsters said Sony is aiming to hit this date, but did not elaborate further. A Sony representative declined to comment for GameSpot.
On top of outing a release window for the PS4, the paper's sources explained Sony considered making it download-only, but ultimately decided against it. According to the report, Sony's flirtation with such a system came to a halt mainly because of concerns regarding the prevalence and reliability of Internet connections around the world.
A user in a region with a relatively slow Internet connection would face lengthy download times, and this turned Sony off to the idea, the source said. A Sony representative told GameSpot, "This is rumor and we do not comment on rumor."
If Sony had moved forward with a digital-only home console, it would have followed the company's PSP Go in ditching boxed games. That system shipped in 2009 and during one week in February 2011 was outsold by its PSP predecessor 1,000-to-1 in Japan.
The site also reports that Microsoft's next Xbox will boast an optical disc drive, as was suggested earlier this year when rumor had the new console sporting a Blu-ray drive. The source told the paper that Microsoft also harbored concerns regarding access to reliable Internet connections when devising plans for its upcoming console.

So the 'new' console by Sony will be sporting a 7+yo optical drive (BluRay) and a 1-2yo graphics chip technology. Sounds like fun.
Meanwhile, PC gamers in late 2013 will have 1GB as the average graphics card size and 1080p as the average AA title resolution and 60fps as pretty much the agreed upon framerate.
PS4 means old technology for $499.99 and i'm just laughing at the Sony fanboys!
With my download limit it'd be the end of gaming for me if they did make it DL only.
Whouldn't it be nice if we could just insert a $100 card into our PS3's that'd instantly update our PS3's with better graphics, speed and all the other stuff we'll probably be charged $1000+ for when the new PS4 comes out.
I don't care when they release it if the specs are good and the price is right I'll preorder and have it release day, same as the wii u, same as the next xbox
Why does it seem like there's such a rush for the PS4? I still love my PS3, so why would I need a PS4?!
Isnt sony and microsoft trying to get rid of used games on their next consoles or was that a rumor....smh
@Gezquester Just because they are releasing a new console does not mean the life cycle for the PS3 is over. Look at the PS2. Sony supported it well after the PS3 was released. Heck it even sold new units for for quite some time. There will still be plenty of people who stick with their PS3s just as with the PS2. The wild card in the 10 year life cycle is Microsoft. Remember the original XBOX? 360 came out and the XBOX was toast.
@CraZed__ the 360 was backwards compatible... something that destroyed many of the early PS3's. The PS3 just had too many features CD, DVD, Blu Ray, PS 2 & 3 games.
My PS3 doesn't play PS2 games. In fact, I bought a PS2 just to replay MGS 1-3 again, and two months later the HD collection was announced. I was not happy since gamestop always rips you off.
Since 360 could play all old games, it voided the original box (plus the pooh DVD setup on the original xbox made it less appealing). PS3 can't play PS2 games that's why it still sells. They better make the new ones backwards compatible, or I'll cry.
@Gezquester That is exactly what they said. The reason for both PlayStation and Xbox releasing new consoles is simply cause of Nintendo.I my self am surprised the wii lasted this long. Yes its dirt cheap, and yeah its a lot more family oriented then both the Xbox and PS3 but it also lacks everything else both those consoles bring to the table. (I dont think i need to list them). I'm pretty sure the PS3 and even the 360 could last at least till 2015-2016, i do not think for 1 second that dev's have reached both consoles maximum potential. Just look at Forza4 and GT5, both games looked absolutely amazing on their respective consoles. With halo 4 coming out in November if im not mistaken and any other PS3 exclusives coming out this year im pretty sure my point will be proven. Why release something new to replace something that's not broken?
@Justinps2hero I hope most console gamers realize that the 'next gen' of systems (PS4/Xbox720/Wii U) are all using graphics cards that will be atleast 1yo tech upon their release AND no new optical drive capability.
TL;DR- get ready for old tech and 'nextgen' systems taking up 3-4 Bluray discs.
If people haven't seen them yet, I added all the tech demos, Here:
If people think games are only going to look better, then they are dead wrong.
didn't sony mention they planned a 10 year life cycle for the ps3 back when it first came out? so much for that....
also i'm not sure i would trust any "inside source" that couldn't spell "halt" properly.
Another rumor? Why can't people just wait, not like its going to get here any sooner if you have idiots saying they leaked information.
im not gettin da PS4 if its goin to be download only console, how they goin to come out wit a new PS4 they can't stop dem hackers from hacking the PS3,PSN?
@youndeke Unfortunately, if a hacker wants in bad enough, he will get in. All consoles and networks have been hacked into. There was a small time when there were reports of xbox accounts getting their credit card numbers used to purchase microsoft points for other accounts. Now there has never been a large scale hacking for any other console except the playstation.
haha thats funny yeah i'm sure bandwith was it not the fact that they would lose probably a quarter of there consumers right off the bat maybe a little more depending on if xbox did a download only platform too.
I hate this we don't need a ps4 just yet!! We still enjoy the ps3...
instead of making it a download only system,
how about putting a mini projector in it for people who cant afford
a nice HDTV yet.....

@Dice2119 how are you gonna co-sign on your own idea? not to mention that would be a terrible idea, a mini projector is not gonna compare to a "nice hdtv" and even a crappy one would drive the price up beyond what anyone with an hdtv, or any tv really, would want to pay for a useless feature. really the only benefit in this idea is if you want to travel with it, but again where would you be going to use a game console that didnt already have a tv you could plug into?
@funguar Ideas lead to better things and yes they can be bad moves but that doesn't mean not to think and go for them right >;-) , that's exactly what it is a idea. thinks for your view though ;-)
I have a feeling it's gonna cost between £500-£750 (incl. bundles), so I'll buy it, but won't be very rich afterwards!
Very glad they decided against it. Physical media will always be what I expect, especially considering nine times out of ten at the moment, they are STILL charging more money for a downloadable title VS what you can get the same game for on a physical disc, which makes no sense whatsoever. If they want us to take it up, they at least have to play the game and lure us in with some decent deals (yes Steam I'm looking at you, the way they do it most of the time is awesome)...
If this is true, you can count me out. I don't like media that I cannot touch. I may even get a VITA instead of a PS4.
It would if that were the only system that got good games. Making it much harder to pirate and butchering the used game market would sure make it easy to get an exclusive deal from a publisher.
Too soon u people are crazy im def ready why wouldnt u want better graphics and more immersive gameplay new consoles are overdue i love the feeling of getting next gen systems going from xbox to xbox 360 was pretty spectacular to me hopefully it will be the same with next systems
@juboner theres nothing wrong with the impressive graphic all ready on on current consoles . your just greedy. we don't need PS4 yet, the PS3 is good enough for a few more years
the ps4 in 2013? hahahahahahahaha! yeah right.. these unnamed sources just wanted their 5 minutes of fame
