PlayStation 4 powered by AMD - Report

10 year cycle - Sony stop playing games. We all know you release new systems in the middle of the old ones life cycle. Wait for them to unveil at E3.

Sony should focus on locking up a few Exclusive titles before it goes spending money on things willy nilly. Everyone knows that Games make people buy the system. If I can't get an amazing game on a specific system then I won't get it. Uncharted was the only reason why I got the PS3 over the xbox.

I honestly can't believe it's time for a new system already....I still think the systems are way to expensive with a number of great games still to come.

Both Nvidia and ATi/AMd have had some bads. It happens. Sony is looking for more of the buck. Every one is looking for more for the buck. Most Don't really care about the hardware stuff. It is the games. What is the point of having the best of the best but nothing to push it or getting ports. Even if PS4 gets AMD, think about this. Look at the games we have now, think about all the detail, true HD, and nothing less than 60 fps we will get on any GPU next gen. I was playing Red Dead the other day and I thought, Man, if this game had come out on next gen.. Wow! Even Mass 1-3. So no matter the hardware, we will see jumps.

@jollybest1 You also said "on the PC ATI has more issues than NVIDIA", which isn't true at all. Like I said, Nvidia's better at delivering drivers, but the actual hardware (isn't that what we're talking about here?) has been much more problematic for Nvidia than AMD. If you didn't want to start a discussion, then you probably shouldn't have commented.

Because they were making much smaller chips, duh. AMD was competing in the $500 segment for quite a while. And smaller chips means less power consumption.

@thewastedyouth You're lucky. My Xbox died 3 months after I bought it (hard drive failure) and my PS2 stopped reading DVDs, and no longer reads CDs either (so I can't even boot to the hard drive to run games off it). However, my Dreamcast still works fine, as does my early Saturn. My PSX wouldn't play certain discs unless I turned it upside-down. Consoles with optical drives just aren't very reliable (cheap drives with cheap lasers). The Xbox was a very robust design (since it was so freaking large), but the cheap hard drives sucked.

@jollybest1 You're nuts. Nvidia produces larger chips than ATI ever did. Power consumption and heat are almost always worse with Nvidia's chips. It's been that way for years. Nvidia have also had manufacturing problems (bumpgate) and Kepler will be the second generation in a row that Nvidia has released late because they couldn't get their designs working on a new process. Nvidia does seem to have better driver development than AMD, but I'm pretty sure they're spending more on it, too. Well, that and crippling games with PhysX. Nvidia would be awesome if it had competent management.

I honestly don't care what they use, as long as it's supported long term and it outperforms the predecessors.

Speculation is all well and good but sony thamselves have stated that there will be no replacment to the PS3 anytime soon. They see the PS3 having a 10 year cycle, so that's 4 years to wait for the PS4!

I've always been a fan of nVidia, but I've had AMD cpus back in the day (when AMD was considered the best gaming cpu). So I put faith in AMD for the future of PS4 gpus. And they they did great for ye olde xbox :)

@jollybest1 A few years back they did what you posted but the run cooler and the drivers are really good now. I have nvidia and AMD card in my computers and the the AMD card runs really good and a lot cooler than my nvidia.

@paranormalnut on the PC ATI has more issues than NVIDIA ....overheating , compatibility with games...Most of the PC gamers complaining about a game for not working are AMD ATI users ...Seriously the drivers for ATI are awful sometimes and I have many friends complaining about that...On the other Hand NVIDIA has it's issues too , like overheating consuming more power than it should and a lot more expensive......My opinion is that ATI has the advantage of price but Nvidia has more to offer , not only that it is more faster (not with much) but because the drivers are better, more stable and durable....Me I am a Nvidia user , never had a problem except with my last card which died after 3 and a half years because of oveheating ...now I have one that runs great and it isn't the best Nvidia card on the market...well I guess it's about what you want or what you can afford

@GodGundamNT1 Nvidia makes good stuff but most people will look at it like this. Nvidia card is just a little faster than AMD. But the price is more, for what? A little more FPS? So why spend more? Dont pull that fanboy crap on me.. My next video card will be an nvidia. But I will stand here and tell you that there is nothing wrong with AMD GPU's..

@GodGundamNT1 Go away. That was a mindless comment. First off Nvidia made a GPU that was not as good as what ATI/AMD made for 360. The 360 almost had the same GPU that the PS3 has in it but ATI made a better deal and a better GPU. Sony will do what it takes to keep the price low, and getting the best bang for the buck. I'm not telling you that AMD's GPU's are better. I have both AMD and nvidia in my both of my computer. I do like nvidia better but the fact is, it is who can a a good chip or the best price. As for CPU power. I don't think PS4's or next gen xbox will one up over the other. It will be more of a GPU and mem/ram thing.

So all next gen consoles will have AMD gpus . Nvidia needs to do a better job of convincing one of the big three to take theirs.

And no, Microsoft is behind all of this PS4 crap AMD gpu, they have successfully ruined this generation with the rushed to market crap box 360 and SEVEN years of Dx9 when Direct X is an intellectual property and registered trademark belonging to Microsoft and they could have waited to put out a Dx 10 GPU powered Xbox instead of the RROD rush job.

@bignick217 First of all you AMD fan-employee cheerleader. It took AMD-ATI to price down the Radeon HD 4870 to make a difference against the GeForce GTX 285, even then the 4870 NEVER beat the GTX 285 in benchmarks to this day. The 5870 also got gutted when the GTX 480 came out but if you are a whiny millionaire with $500 dollar pocket change to waste on graphics cards every 9 months... The Radeon 6XXX series SUCKED and when the GeForce GTX 580 SINGLE GPU card came out it also blasted it out of the water. It took the Radeon HD 7970 single GPU to pull ahead, a graphics card GPU that is 11 months younger than the GTX 580 and the GeForce Kepler GPU is months away so it shows how ignorant you are. Also the GeForce 7800 GTX 256MB ($500) came out at 430Mhz clock speed in early 2005 and it SMOKED anything ATI-AMD had back then and in November over six to seven months later Nvidia brought out the GeForce 7800 GTX 512 (also $500 USD) came out with the 550Mhz clock and 512MB of ram and it DESTROYED any feeble attempt by AMD. Then ATI-AMD after their sucky X19XX cards were sucking they delayed the 2900 but when it came out it also got smoked by even the crippled GeForce GTS 8800 384MB (cut down G80) since then ATI was being purchased and absorbed into AMD then they did not even try to compete as even the Radeon 3870 gpu got SPANKED by the years old GTX 8800 non Ultra.

I always have nvidia cards, except S3 ViRGE+VooDoo2 in 1998 :P BUT for the first time in my history i will buy amd radeon 7990 for my new computer which is designed to handle gta5 ;)

I have recently bought a PS3 in Nov last year and enjoying every minute of it. If the PS4 does make an appearance at this years E3 and it will on sale next year I will jump off a building.

@Hvac0120 I'm not talking about the PS2 box, PSX was the nickname of the original Playstation. I call it PSX to differentiate from the PSone, the slim version. Besides, most people don't know what the other PSX is anyway.

@RitsukoEX lol I guess I really looked like a fanboy. I'm just tired of reading M$ bought X dlc exclusiveness or what have you. It would be nice to see two systems that are pretty diverse, instead of mostly the same, but then again I'm not rteally a tech guy. I would easily bet that Xbox will have better color. To me thats the bigger factor (so much gray on PS2/3) since I'm sure lots of releases will meet both platforms.

Stick with NVIDIA Sony. My brother has a AMD Graphics card on his PC and I have a NVIDIA and bought my laptop first. Him having a PC he's Graphics card got messed up first... while i use my laptop to play games and it still runs fines.. with the laptop having overheated a couple of times. Copying MS it's not going to improve their sales more likely just make it worse.

@DrKill09 The Intel 2500k, which is only $180 will destroy that AMD cpu. You can push these SB chips to 5GHz. So don't lie about your AMD chip being anywhere near the Intel's right now. The Bulldozer cpu's are a joke and right now Intel is competing with themselves because AMD can't touch them. Right now ATi is faster than Nvidia. The 7970 is faster than the 580 and the 7950 is on par with the 580 which you can OC to above the 580. AMD's CPUs are a joke. AMD's GPU's are good. Do your research.

It is the same with Nvidia, NVIDIA or ATI want TOP DOLLAR for their tech and do not want to canablize their core business... deicated Cards. Who would buy a PC card for $$$$ if they can get a console that can have the same power for the same price??? That is why PS3 GPU is weak.

It would COST TOO MUCH. I see Sony working with AMD to licence some key tech. But as for the chip itself I think PowerVR is the way to go. Sony could get more for less. Thus a more powerful console for less money. Sony also has some engineers that are knowlegable about GPUs, and CPUs. Sony has a fab, and has the capability to make a great console.

@DrKill09 And all the vids were made by fanboys.. physx runs just fine on AMD cards. In the past they did not fair to well but 5000, 6000, and the new 7000 cards run it just as good as nvidia. I should know. I use it all the time with CGI and we run AMD and Nvidia workstation cards. The both do very well. My home computers have nvidia and AMD video cards and they both run it just the same.

@paranormalnut I've seen plenty of vids showing AMD graphics cards running physx like complete garbage.

The playstation 4 to have an AMD processor. Good to see Sony actively working on PS4. So by having the same company making the CPU as the Xbox Durango then Playstation 4 will not be the last port of call for developers.

@Hvac0120 PSX's GPU was a 2D unit, all the 3D was handled by the geometry engine inside the main CPU. Neither the CPU nor the GPU had anything to do with ATI. The PS2's Graphics Synthesizer was a Sony design and, again, had nothing to do with ATI.

PSOne and PS2 were both ATI video cards. AMD cards are ATI cards, since AMD purchased ATI a few years back. This is pretty much just saying that the relationship between Sony and Nvidia for the PS3 was not as friendly or beneficial as the ATI partnerships and that Sony is simply returning to it's original vendor for the next PlayStation. I like both AMD and Nvidia graphics cards. So I don't really care which way they go. What I'd like to see Sony take advantage of is system-on-a-chip designs for adding a little more oomph to the system using crossfire/SLI with the on-board GPU. Let me try to briefly explain... The AMD Llano chips have an AMD GPU built into the processor. If you purchase a crossfire AMD dedicated GPU and put that into the same machine, you can crossfire the dedicated GPU with the APU to get a significant graphics boost. It's not as good as 2 dedicated, but it also is significantly less cost. I have seen this configuration in a recent PC build.

Well nvidia kind of burned Sony. Nvidias CPu in the PS3 was not as powerful as the 350's GPU. @DrKill09 Yes AMD's GPU's are compatible with physX. Put Bat Man or a ton of other games and you will see physX..

@Madgnad No. Intel's cpu's are overpriced. Why spend three times as much when I don't have to. I have a Phenom II 940 quad at 3.5ghz, and it's great. I got it used for $95. AMD's graphics cards have buggy drivers, and aren't compatible with physX. No thanks. So next time, learn to read.

@monson21502 Oh trust me I don't...but too many people are...but its not completely their fault. A lot of the younger generation wasn't either around or don't find it necessary to go buy a PS2 to play a lot of these HD remakes Sony are releasing. When they took the PS2 backward compatibility out of the PS3, they kind of shoved the digital format of these games down everyone's throats and neglected the loyal older generation of Sony customers that has invested heavily into building game libraries for decades now.

@demonkingx5 Well I am a PC gamer and user only...But man as @Sigil-otaku said consoles use less power and less programs, the pc on the other hand has a lot of needs like more ram (don't forget that the OS eats ram and every program that runs in the background).....Yes PCs are more powerful because they can be heavily customized and updated without changing everything in it (with limitations because you can't install a NVIDIA card on a mb that uses ATI technology, or an Intel on mb that uses AMD tech. or more than, for example, 8 gb ram because the mb is limited to that number ).The PC is more powerfull because it should be ,because it can do more than playing one game or doing limited things .. PC is a more practical system for the ones that know how to use it and like it because they can do much more than just entertainment.....So yah the PC will be the king because it should that doesn't mean that consoles (limited to entertainment) are that inferior , in fact consoles should never be compared to the PC ....Even if the consoles are outdated they will do their job as an entertainment tool......On the other hand my fear is that when SOny, Nintendo and Microsoft will release the new systems they will charge a lot more than they worth..

huh, then again most consoles have been powered by AMD for quite a while. I remember the original Xbox had a Nvidia card but other than that it's mostly AMD for this gen and last. I wonder if Nvidia's cards are still a little too hot to be going inside consoles. @demonkingx5 Consoles won't be outdated right out of the box, they are designed with older hardware from PC's (i.e. not the latest and best graphics cards) but they have these customised and tweaked to meet there needs so they are beyond what it appears. Consoles also technically can't be judged in the same regard as PC's (yet at least anyway) as they have far less background software and applications to run so they don't need as much power. It's like calling a mid range PC 'outdated' even if it was the mid range graphics card of the latest series. It's not outdated, it's just designed to be weaker for price / performance reasons. Like I said though consoles generally have graphics cards customised to meet there needs too.
