Purported magazine cover appears to reveal that Valve Software's dimension-hopping sequel will be coming to Sony's console.

What we heard: Last month, Valve Software revealed it was readying Portal 2, a full-fledged sequel to its award-winning first-person puzzle game, for a holiday release. However, while the first Portal was released for the PlayStation 3, PC, and Xbox 360 as part of the 2007 Orange Box compilation, its follow-up was announced only for the latter two platforms and the Mac, which Valve is now supporting wholeheartedly.
Given that Valve's last two games--Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2--were released only for the PC, Xbox 360, and (now) Mac, it looked like Portal 2 would not be released for the PS3. Bolstering that assumption was Valve Software CEO Gabe Newell's vocal criticism of Sony's console. The veteran developer, who was recently honored with a Pioneer Award at the 2010 Game Developers Choice Awards, has repeatedly complained about how the platform's Cell processor is difficult to work with and outsourced PS3 porting duties for the Orange Box to publisher Electronic Arts.
Now, it seems that EA may also be porting Portal 2 to the PS3. The cover of next month's issue of PSM3 clearly lists "Portal 2" as featured in the magazine, which covers only PlayStation 3 and PSP offerings. Though the announcement is not official, the upcoming game--which will introduce co-op play in a mode separate from the main storyline--has its title listed under "36 must-play PS3 games" along with Fallout: New Vegas, Brink, Crysis 2, and the Medal of Honor reboot.
The official story: (Sound of crickets chirping) -- Valve spokesperson.
Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus…unless PSM3's copy editors let a doozy of a typo slip through.
gabe newell is a massive fanboy.. just put L4D on PS3 already, im not paying for my online gaming, when theres a better one for free
boo. that probably means portal 2 wont be the first taste of the new valve engine =( or worse, valves new engine is designed for consoles... and valve isnt ID you know so "brand new" graphics circa 2005 here we go, yay =(
Probably fake, obvious PSM3 is trying to get media attention. Remember all those 360 magazines that put "Metal Gear Solid 4" on the cover of their magazines? Of course we know want happened, well actually it didn't happen.
@Hungry Dinosaur You forget though that the reason the sales were poor was because Valve refused to port it so EA did it instead. This was at the height of EA hating by gamers (luckily it seems they have shaped up for the most part) as well as the port while it was ok, was nothing compared to the 360/PC version until a patch was applied months later. Add that to the constant bashing by Valve of the PS3 platform and a couple hundred thousand (an impressive number in and of itself) is even more significant. If Valve had made an effort to port it and port it right the Chances of its sales matching the 360s would have been greatly increased. If anything PS3 owners proved to Valve that they were worthy of their time buy purchasing a product for their system despite all its faults.
i don't no. Valve is just a crappy dev. Portal 2 would be good but it doesn't fixed their stunt with the Ornge box and that President's, if i remember right, fanboy remarks
I hope Valve starts putting there games to ps3. I love there games. I have a 360 but sadly i do not have xbox live just because i dont want to pay and i don't really like playing on PC. But come on valve why now? why can't l4d go on ps3 or half-life 3? The orange box made me happy. Anyways i didn't really like the 1st portal so i don't really care if this is true or not.
@LosDaddie There's no need for that font, if your comments are worth reading they'll stand out on their own.
Valve has already stated that Portal 2 will be a first day release on the PS3 right next to the 360 and PC.
I wouldn't be surprised if Portal 2 ported to the PS3. If the Orange Box was multiplatformed to the PS3 due to EA, then Portal 2 can possibly be multiplatformed to the PS3.
It stands to reason that Valve and EA would release Portal 2 on PS3, They released Orange Box which had Portal packed into it's 5 game collection back in 2007... Back then it was released on PC, XBOX 360 and PS3 if everyone remembers....... If they don't release this on PS3 I kinda consider it an oversight, lol how is that for a XBOX 360 player??
Now? Valve chooses to start releasing games for ps3 right when portal 2 is being developed? Why not when Left 4 Dead 1 was being made? I would be really angry if I owned a ps3. Portal isn't bad, don't get me wrong, but it is far from being one of Valve's greatest. By the way, why hasn't there been a next gen counterstrike?
i hope portal 2 comes to ps3, along with half-life 3(if it ever comes out...) i don't want to buy a 360 for just one or two games!! >_
@0B3L15k_o_Li9hT An interesting theory - I find it hard to believe but it isn't that far fetched :). Has Gabe ever expressed patriotic sentiments? I still think it may have more to do with past sales - the Orange Box on PS3 sold only a few hundred thousand copies while the XBox version sold just over a million (and the PC did even better). Between low sales and increased development times, I can understand why Valve CBA... :P
@LordRaymond, Valve are NOT making it it for the PS3, its just a port thats being done by EA, in the same way that HL2:Ep2 was ported to the PS3 by EA. As indicated in the above story: "Now, it seems that EA may also be porting Portal 2 to the PS3. The cover of next month's issue of PSM3 clearly lists "Portal 2" as featured in the magazine, which covers only PlayStation 3 and PSP offerings."
Lol look who is coming back to the PS3 after I thought they dropped support for it. I won't buy this lol.
I am honestly not surprised because it was just a while ago when Valve stated that Gabe's infamous "PS3 bashing" isn't happening anymore in Valve and that they want to begin developing on the PS3. They said that they know many PS3 only owners want L4D and that they are hoping to bring that over, I expected a version of Portal 2 or TF3, HF3, etc. on ps3 that is equal to 360 made by Valve (not ported by EA) to be on it.
PLEASE VALVE! I really don't give a **** about L4D but I need Portal 2 (and when it comes out HL2E3/HL3)! If this is real I'll take back everything bad I've ever said about the company...except the Gabe Newell fat jokes. Way to add to the stereotype Gabe
Wow, I wouldn't want to be them if they acted preemptively, and Portal 2 never ends up coming to the PS3... But I'm sure it will.
I own the PS3 and I hate it when good games never come to the platform.
Where have you been for the past year? Most of the best games have either been exclusive to PS3 or released on both systems. The PS3 is my platform of choice, with the 360 tailing closely (cost being my biggest differentiator). _
I totally agree with ChoiMein! I want the next episode of Half Life! Valve is way to slow at releasing titles that only take an afternoon to beat. They should release Portal 2 and Half Life 2 Episode 3 together in a bundle. And the Cell processor is too difficult to work with? Quit whining Gabe Newell, tons of other developers are doing just fine with the PS3.
@InsertWittyID : "It looks like the Internet's sarcasm detector is severely damaged." You caught that, huh? I was kinda thinking my avatar would be a big enough clue, but it looks like I'll have to make my position a little easier for these folks to get: omfgx0rz s0n33 r t3h ub4r l33ts4uc3 &nd gabe NEWBell kan sux mah poel!!!!11!1!1!1!1!1!111!one Better?
Where the hell is half life 3?? Why are they working on Portal 2? I mean, Portal was AWESOME.. I played through it twice... but I WANT MY HALF LIFE WRAP UP!!!
cool for PS3 people but I have to say 2 things 1.) didn't gabe from Valve (I forgot his last name) completely bash the PS3 and call it useless and too hard to program for? and 2.) I adore valve I am a valve fanboy the whole way but didn't they have problems porting over the orange box for the PS3? from what I heard out of the PC, 360 and PS3 the PS3 version was the worst and had horrible glitches. Lets hope that doesn't happen to portal 2.
@ emoticedmar I hear because the coding is entirely different to execute as opposed to all other consoles from the past, each one having the same formula and logic, the PS3 taking a different direction. Well, I still say change is good, and they should give it a shot!
Valve has a point. The games look the same on both platforms, if not worse on the PS3 because of ports. Maybe if Sony made something more developer friendly we wouldn't be suffering from the lack of games. They ****** up and everyone knows it. High priced console, difficult to code for, etc. I own the PS3 and I hate it when good games never come to the platform. Either because M$ bribes everyone or devs don't want to make games for the PS3. I really would have picked up the 360 but the failure rates on that is inexcusable. They couldn't even develop a normal console lol I miss the PS2 era =(
Cool, I am so glad that it may be coming to a console I can play it on as the first one was awesome.
it just shows how lazy gabe is. Like come on buddy u dont want to work on somthing new and have a challenge for once. Like come on i have alost all respect for this guy.
@mrzero1982pt2 Microsoft uses their existing .NET framework technology for the development of Xbox 360 games. The architecture of the Xbox 360 is also setup very similar to a PC. Therefore developers where already very familiar with how to program for the Xbox 360 right from the start. With the PS3, the Cell is a completely new way of programming. This means new developer tools and new ways of using threads to peek the performance of the machine. Now that there have been 4 years of PS3 games, the tools are likely a LOT more friendly and developers now have training and experience on the architecture. I believe many of the complaints stem from the fact that developers have to spend the time and resources to train their programmers on the PS3. This leads to delays of games and amateur mistakes in the programming. For those developers who got their people trained and started putting out games asap on the PS3, their programmers are now skilled and have experience behind them in developing for the platform. This results in much better games and they will only get better. Those developers who did not invest in the research or in their programmers skills will have a harder time jumping into development on the system. _
