Pre-owned games coming to ASDA?

I laugh at MS's attempts to curb second hand sales with it's 'On demand' service. I mean 19.99 for a game that I could get cheaper new never mind second hand ... now if MS sold them for a fiver they might be on to something!!

I would say this is further proof that there is more in retro gaming at the moment than modern gaming.

Chavsda selling second hand games? I suppose it would only be a matter of time before Supermarkets entered into another venture

I shop online for my shopping at ASDA since it's cheaper (this is from someone who works at tesco) and if I'm able to buy preowned games online with my shopping i'd be very happy ^.^ Although i've never checked the prices of the games *goes to check ASDA website*

If console manufacturers and publishers don't want to lose money because people are buying second-hand games, make the games cheaper to buy in the first place. I will always buy new over second-hand if the price is good - in my mind around GBP 20. I don't buy many games and when I do, I wait until a game I want is around my ideal price...if it's at that price or less, then I buy it ( new or second-hand ). Only a few AAA titles will get me to part with more cash ( which unfortunately on the Wii is very small - Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Metriod Prime - I'm buying Money Island on WiiWare soon ). I'm also waiting ( patiently ) for The Conduit to come down in price. The only problem with my suggestion is that if games are cheaper to buy new, then second-hand games will be cheaper still. Although then people would get even less of a trade-in price and people might decide it wouldn't be worth it. Sorry for the long comment :)

@ shocka-delica: how much do you pay for the midget gems? also, the idea of asda selling games doesnt really interest me, ebay hmv game and play.com are much more convenient for me

I think ASDA do the cheapest new games anyway. I remember they had CoD:WAW at £27.97 on the first two days it came out. So im guessin their preowned games are going to be cheaper than the other retailers as well.

I rarely trade-in becuase generally the prices are stupidly low, but i do buy pre-owned more often than not because you usually get a good deal. I do buy new releases if i really want it and generallyt on pre-order, but pre-owned is a great way to go! Eswpecially with the economy as it is!

I get most game's pre-owned/pre-ordered/gneral purchases off of GAME.co.uk becuase they're generally quite good value and free P&P. And some pre-owned games from Amazon.co.uk(I recently got Resident evil 5 for £15.00)

I never buy pre-owned and I never trade in. Waste of money, most of the time you can get a sealed new copy for the same or a pound or 2 more if you shop around, not to mention the appalling trade in/sale value of most games (unless they came out a week previous.)

Shame its being run by "former Gamestation product director Andrew Thompson" In my experience Gamestation has always failed.

Cool asda have a lot of good deals on there new games as it is so if they start doing second hand wow.

i'll buy new games from ASDA, but only if they are cheaper, which half the time they are. I used to buy all my used games from CEX, but they have gone very downhill at the moment, not getting new releasses for ages and suddenly uping their prices. I also mainly use play.com, but i use GAME for the knowledge and reward points. I never use HMV, except for my preorder of call of duty modern warfare 2, but only because they are the only english firm which is selling the ultimate edition (with the night vision goggles).

I just use play.com for everything at the moment. There's usually between 5 and 10 quid off every newish game and you can pre-order most things a few quid cheaper than in the shop. For pre-owned stuff I usually try HMV. They've got a good selection and the newest games usually make it onto the pre-owned shelf about 3 days after they come out. Picked up Killzone 2 for 35 quid (New copy being 40) the Monday after it came out on my way to uni.

@SadPSPAddict I buy only pre-owned games, and 99% of them work, about the same for new games as well.

Instead of pre owned they should get a better selection of games in the first place, you can only ever buy games for consoles.

Called up yesterday after receiving email upon email of apologies that they could not get games from their supplier. They said that it will be another 2 weeks minimum. I cancelled my order and went to Amazon, came this morning free delivery.

I agree Game have great after sales service but how often do new games not work??

@ lukas and anyone having a pop at game, try taking a game back to asda or tesco and see what happens i.e. if its faulty, game has far better service, i buy games from game shop, food from food shops, and always will. Tesco = one of worst companies when something is faulty.

@lukas1051 I absoloutely agree. In the same way i get most of my DVD & CD's from ASDA instead of HMV etc.

Good idea to use less resources in manufacturing discs and boxes, books etc but not i hope they dont completely stop selling physical copies of games

I swear, ASDA and Tesco are some of the best places in Britain to buy games, pre-owned or not; I saw Killzone 2 in there 2 days after release for £24.99 I buy all my games from ASDA, why pay £45 at GAME when ASDA sells them for about £30?

Last year, one of the biggest names on the UK high street, HMV, announced that it would be moving into the sale of pre-owned games. The move came in the light of continuing decreases in CD sales and a growth in games and technology for the retailer.

Now, supermarket giant ASDA may also be moving into the used-game market. UK retail trade publication MCV is reporting that the Walmart-owned supermarket plans to capture significant market share in games, part of which will come from pre-owned sales. Though not explicitly confirming the move, ASDA category director Fergal Gara told the publication, "If we want to be a serious player in this market, pre-owned is definitely an area we have to watch. It's not top of our agenda, but we're aware that pre-owned is a huge part of the business for the specialist and not one we can ignore."

The retailer also announced it had hired ex-Gamestation staff to help with its gaming push, including former Gamestation product director Andrew Thompson, who will be the new head of business, and ex-senior product manager Jenny Leach who will be taking up the role of senior buyer.

In the US, several high-profile companies have already moved into selling used games, usually the preserve of specialist retailers. Toys "R" Us currently has a pre-owned service on trial in its New York stores, while mammoth online retailer Amazon has been accepting trade-ins since March. ASDA parent company Walmart also moved into the sector recently, setting up automated e-Play kiosks for trade-ins.

The used-game market is currently increasing in popularity, with recent Nielsen figures showing a 32 percent rise in second-hand game sales in the US. Though the service is popular with consumers who are able to buy games at reduced prices, as well as get rid of old titles, it's less popular with the major console manufactures and publishers who see no profit from the sale of secondhand titles.

At this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft announced its "Games On Demand" feature, allowing users to download full games to their Xbox 360 hard drive and effectively stopping secondhand sales as the games cannot be transferred from the original console on which they were bought. Similarly, Sony's new PSP Go ditches the UMD drive and only allows games to purchased via download.
