PS Vita release date outed? - UK Retail Radar

By Staff

Shopto.net offers PlayStation Vita preorders for release on November 4; Sony denies releasing any information to retailers.

Two weeks ago, Sony confirmed that the next-generation PlayStation Portable was to be called the PlayStation Vita and that it would "successively launch in [the] global market starting [at] the end of 2011." While Sony did not confirm which region (or regions) would see the handheld this year, UK retailer Shopto.net seems to be betting Europe is among them.

It has posted a release date of November 4, as shown in inset screenshot and has claimed that that date is "from Sony," rather than simply a placeholder. Responding to this claim, Sony told GameSpot UK that "no one has communicated any release dates to retail partners. That date is not official as we [Sony Computer Entertainment UK] haven't announced anything yet."

Shopto has, however, also listed a rather unlikely looking range of Vita launch titles, including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, BioShock, Little Big Planet, Killzone, Resistance, Ruin, ModNation Racers, and Street Fighter X Tekken, which are all also being offered for preorder for the same date as the new console. The retailer has said that the above software will have a recommended price of £39.99 ($65); the Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the handheld have recommended retail prices of £229.00 ($370) and £279.99 ($451), respectively. The two units will retail for $250 and $300--before sales tax--respectively in the United States.

Check out GameSpot's full rundown of the Vita for more on what to expect from the handheld. Hands-on footage of the Vita can also be viewed through GameSpot's Tonight on the Spot broadcast.

Sony makes machines to play real hardcore games, it's just sad how XBROKE and Nintardo have dumbed the HD gen down to DVD level and kept Sony from moving gaming onto bigger and better things overall. Even regarding the PSP, it's sad that the Wii and gimmicks prevail over substance... Kinect is another example, $150 3 second lag crippled web camera for morons to leap around in front of a TV to, so sad. I've got my Vita preordered and I'm buying the 3DTV bundle, i want Sony around... without them it's a wasteland of XBROKENintardo garbage.

@Poncho_Hachacha I hope they do stay around PSP prices, I was just basing my post on the Shop To prices from the link but this seemed to happen (again in the UK) with the 3DS where games seemed to be console prices but then went down to handheld game prices before release though so I'll wait and see.

@Sigil-otaku Actually the production costs were said to be closer to psp costs than ps3 so Vita games will probably be somewhere in the same $40-$50 range the psp used.

@Firham_of_Jomah I agree with you that the Vita will probably be better than the 3DS, but your example about the gamecube is ridiculous. You thought that SSBM was the only game worth playing for that system? The GC had a huge library of great games, sounds like you missed out. As for the 3DS (which I do not own btw) even though people are buying it for Zelda OoT now, they know that Mario, Mario Kart, Star Fox 64, Kid Icarus, etc are coming. They don't plan on playing the same game for 5-6 years as you implied.

Vita = updated PSP and we all know how that turned out over here in the states. Also, if the Vita can run games with PS3 graphic and cost $250 then why isn't the PS3 about $50 by now?

I am sure every time a good game(Zelda 3DS this week) or news release about the 3DS comes out we will get Vita "Leaks" with Sony denying they released any of leaks and how they don't comment on speculation.

@dreamgod247 Excuse me but no Mario Kart is gonna stop be from buying a PSVita, the reverse is more probable....

Interesting is also that Amazon Germany is listing 250 euros for the non-3G and 300 euros for the 3G version. However - there's no release date listed and they've offered a price guarantee whereby price changes will be reflected in the amount payable. In other words, they don't have a frickin' clue how much it's going to be and just want to get people pre-ordering.

Once again sony is using thier heads by releasing the Vita on Nov 4 rather than later on in the month. You got too many big games coming out in Nov, Call of Duty, Assassin Creed, Skyrim, Uncharted 3 and don't forget the 3DS big games, Super Mario and Mario Kart. Those games can make gamers not want to buy a Vita. But it's coming out before those games, you might gamers getting a Vita unstead. You can either get all those games or a Vita, tough choice.

PSVITA is shaping up to be the best handheld ever, it's a day-one buy for sure, every time I imagine playing PS3-like games with very close experience and controls, it always makes me really excited and thrilled to have such a device.I'd love to play Uncharted, Tekken ,Call of Duty ,(or any similar great multiplayer shooter, imagine a game like Battlefield 3 for this thing :D) and many other great games which are totally possible to be developed on the system. I hope PSVITA is at least twice as successful as the original PSP. I'll be buying it no doubt and looking forward to many great games and content available for it.

@sulaymanqazi "thumbs up if you are tired of Nintendo 3D$ fanboys are talking about how they got a 3D$ just for Zelda: Ocarina of Time. is that the only game they will play for the next 5-6 years?" Lol. That's exactly what I did with my Gamecube and Smash Bros. The only other game I feel is worth owning (back then and still to this day) is Eternal Darkness. Still don't own a copy though... Not sure if that's much of a fanboy thing to do. They would buy up everything made by the big N (Steel Diver for ex.) and say they are the best games under the sun. And then come on here shouting off, haha. PSV for the win this round!!! **Forgot to mention the price point is dead on. $250.00 is more than reasonable for such a piece of hardware....here's hoping they continue making excellent games to back it up (once the system is out and it already has some boss games that is).**

If it's true, then Sony should be in store for a nice holiday season.

Price seems a little high compared to US prices but I believe they will go down before shipping date.

Coming from a 3DS owner, I actually want Sony to succeed with the PS Vita. The system is looking great. Sony has been taking a lot of hits this year and they need a great comeback. I am not going to take sides and see which one is "better" because there is no way to determine that; it's all in a person's interests. While the DS had more sales than PSP, some people still prefer the PSP for certain games and features. I hope both Nintendo and Sony develop amazing games for their handhelds. It's too early to say the 3DS isn't great, it just launched. So let's just wait and see how both turn out.

its awesome and all but portables get beat to hell pretty fast, even if you take care of them like a child, touch pads getting chiped and a crack touched screen= 300 black brick, but if they last and are durable, id gladly buy it

ZeroX91 18 pts

I defiantly gonna get the vita but not at launch because they will just release an new version six months later with 1 more camera!!! and the "old" model will go down in price by 25%

Jab7604 5 pts

I have no issue with either teh PSV or 3DS, but if i rememebr correctly when the psp battled the DS, critics where claiming death to the nintendo grip on the hand held market, it will be interesting to see how it turns out, im looking forward to both.

I hope this date is true. The system looks phenomenal, can't wait.

@tom_cat_01 What do you expect when Conservatives aren't investing in jobs and people are just being put on benefits. Its unsustainable. We need to be investing in jobs, looking for new industries to narrow the gap between our imports and exports. Games industry could be one but as conservatives is mainly old aged grey haired men who know nothing about today's society, they think games are a corrupting medium.

I put $50.00 down last weekend at Gamestop. They told me the release would be 12-31-11.

I'm expecting a lot from Vita, I might even buy it instead of PS3 or 360.

@tom_cat_01 Oh. tht sux. i thought europe was doing good. i just heared how my uncle in greece lost his job and i thought that was a little thing but wow. thats crazy!

Only kidding i might buy it but its £279 at Game for the 3G one. Looks intresting i was only jokeing waiting for the 1.5 version

tom_cat_01 16 pts

@sulaymanqazi ... Ummm, the economy is most def not good in europe. The UK is barely out of recession, Greece is on the verge of massive economic collapse, as is Portugal: and Spain has some of the highest unemployment rates in the developed world.

Another reason I will be flat broke lol The Q4 of 2011 is a great time for gaming.

Awesome news. The only thing I hate is where I live. Converted to US dollars, the price of Vita is going to be 400$ (The same as Ps3 here). It sucks, because 400$ is average monthly salary.

Sigil-otaku 27 pts

Too bad the games are as expensive as console ones, that's quite a big put off when the system also uses storage cards of some sort to store games that will need even more buying to be able to store some of them. I'm beginning to wonder if the price of the NGP will creep up a little because of those 2 factors. Most games can be bought as physical media though I guess.

Sigil-otaku 27 pts

@axlroselm Why do you miss it? The game is still coming right? It'll be on PS3 anyway though.

lilrobda1 6 pts

They did say at the end of the year, so this date is no surprise.
