PS3 firmware update adds auto trophy syncing, auto-cloud saves

PlayStation Plus subscribers will have the option to automatically sync trophies and make use of a new auto-upload function for online save data backup.

Earlier today Sony released the details of its upcoming PlayStation 3 v.3.70 firmware update, announcing two new features for PlayStation Plus subscribers on the official PlayStation Blog.

The update will firstly rename the Automatic Download feature to "Automatic Update" and will introduce an auto-upload function for online save data backup and trophy syncing for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Other new features to be introduced in the update include a new recommendation function that will allow users to share their recommendations for PlayStation Store items with their PSN friends, as well as send messages with links from the product pages within the PlayStation Store.

Sony is also adding a new category to the XrossMediaBar (XMB) called "TV/Video Services," which will include video applications, such as Netflix, Hulu PLUS, and VUDU. Users will be able to download video applications available on the console directly from the new category and will be able to store them in a new folder labeled "My Channels."

In regard to the PS3's functionality to play Blu-ray 3D films, the update will add 3D support when accessing Java-based special features on Blu-ray, as well as DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR decoding/bit stream output (or lossless audio) support while playing Blu-ray 3D movies. 3D digital photos in MPO format will now also be able to be viewed in 3D on the XMB and in the Photo Gallery app.

According to Sony, the v.3.70 firmware update will be available soon.

@jamskis Duh ? I don?t know how I could be wrong if I only pay $5 dollars a month. Most everyone I know pays the yearly plan. Again, that works out to $5 dollars a month.

@ theshonen8899 : Or maybe instead you could actually come in with a normal reply instead of immediately brandishing your ''Nintendo and M$ Fanboy'' tag for anyone who dares question Sony...more than 90% of said update are features that only work for ps+ subscribers (also most of which of that like ''trophy'' and the likes are features that have already been staples on 360 for..a while...to say the least and are available for all 360 users) and excluding the video service (because of regional problems) there really isn't much at all for any non ps+ subscribers to get excited over. The general feel of this update is ''Here are the main features for those that pay even more and let's see if we can throw in a couple things for those who just purchased our $600 system...''.Selling a system for a considerable amount of money and then updating it with features that have already been on competitor's systems for a long time and then technically charging for it seems more like dlc than appreciation of customers.

@FusionRain I was not speaking of the Vita I know the Vita is coming with chat...I was talking about the PS3 people want party chat on PS3 but there is patent preventing it...

FusionRain

@Promised_Trini How could they have patented cross game chat when the PS Vita will release with it? Not to mention the clients on PC like xfire do that very thing.

Auto cloud-save uploads would be great, apart from the fact you've only got 150MB of space to play with - given how cheap storage is that's pretty weak. An Afrika game game save is over 350MB on its own (though that one is extreme) and I have quite a number that are 5-6 MB. My saves fill the cloud storage available several times over.

@Rayzakk Off topic, but who is that guy in your pic and how can I find him?

I updated last night and my iplayers have vanished on every account but the one I downloaded the update on... Its not broken the system but its frustrating to have to log in twice if I want to play games on one account then have to watch the iplayers on another... Just a heads up to those who haven't downloaded it yet.

@jamyskis Well I would imagine the PSN content would be worth it for people who buy a lot of PS3 games as it is, so the discounts and free games would make it worth it. For cloud saves I know people would like to have that option for people who have friends with PS3s, so I could go to my friend's house and load up my PSN and have all my unlocked characters in a fighting game or level in a shooter. It would also be useful in case of hardware failure. For instance, my friend's Xbox 360 had its hard drive fail recently. He played Mass Effect five times and Mass Effect 2 twice and he was hoping to use all of those saves for Mass Effect 3. If he had an auto-upload cloud save feature then he wouldn't be replaying Mass Effect five times (he's out of his mind). PSN+ isn't just some random charity, its useful for people who play their PS3s a lot and it should definitely be worth it's $50/year.

I wish they let you disable trophies, seems PS3 can do everything but that. :P

@theshonen8899: My point is not that the PSN+ content doesn't appeal to everyone - that much is a given with any offering. My point is that the content given away free in PSN+ is below standard by anyone's measure for the price demanded. And as far as cloud saves go - who is the target audience then? Who the hell is supposed to have more than one PS3? Steam cloud saves are something I can understand - after all, many people have a gaming PC AND a laptop - but if the PSP doesn't support cloud saves, what's the point? Of course, if the Vita supports cloud saves, that will be another matter altogether. At the end of the day we are customers. We are not here as a charity to support Sony in their endeavours. We are here to get our money's worth, and if you ask Sony for an honest answer, I'm sure they'll tell you that they're in it for the same. @Phil-teh-Pirate: I've had the same problem with FF9 on the PS3. Coincidence? Probably not. But I play it on the PS2 and it works fine. I suspect Sony have introduced incompatibilities in firmware to exclude people from using the disc versions of the FF games, thereby forcing them to buy from PSN. That wouldn't surprise me. I had the same problem with Ridge Racer Type 4, which worked fine until it appeared on PSN. Anyway, with the exception of a few intelligent comments on this board, this fanboy war is starting to bore me, so I'll duck out here.

@Tony-Baxter Hell, tell me 'bout it...but it's not just the outdated Flash player--it's the OVERALL browser experience that needs an overhaul. C'mon, several yrs later would it kill you to finally put some effort into making your browser acceptable, Sony. Chrome or Opera I'm sure would work wonders right about now....just sayin'.

That's some ol' BS, Sony really needs to stop trying to nickel and dime us (and if you're like me, you've been there since their first console) with features that should, quite frankly, be given to PS3 owners anyway. You don't see Xbox Live not giving silver users the same updates and system features as the paying customers, at least not that I've seen. PS+ should be an option, but Sony is slowly changing it into a must-have, if only for system features. I had it for the free month, I really wasn't all that impressed, tbh.

@FoxbatAlphFifty dollars a year is really not that bad. That's less than a normal retail game at launch. I'm a PS+ member and I've already got my money's worth back and more in free games and the subscription year isn't even half over yet. The auto-updating, the little PStore discounts, and the early/exclusive beta access is just icing on the cake. PS+ is fantastic deal that's well worth $50.

why don't trophies sync as soon as you earn them? Or the next time you sign in after earning them? That always seemed weird to me.

@Yulaw2000 Likely never to happen with all these HD re-releases, not to mention that they have long ago said backward compatibility wasn't what consumers wanted :\ "trophy syncing" Why on earth it too this long is a mystery, but whatever, it's a welcome addition.

@Promised_Trini Thats your right, however I would be interested to know then if you feel the PSOne bc is a mistake? How about the compatibility they are proposing between PS3 and Vita games? If you are for those, then why would you be against PS2 bc? If your against all cross platform and bc play between Sony devices my question would be why? Does it hurt you in some way, and if you don't care what other owners would like then I have to say why should I care what your opinion is?

Cross chat, or some kind of party chat PLEASE, I hate having to chat either in the chat window or in the same game as another person. Oh well, itll prob never happen anyway.

Cloud saving auto-update would be nice, but they need to radically expand the space for cloud saves. i have 150 megs of saves for several games (I believe Valkyria Chronicles is one of them, yay save scumming) so that feature is basically useless to me. Still, little updates are nice.

Promised_Trini
Promised_Trini

@Rayzakk A feature I hope that's doesn't come back...It's called PS3 for a reason...I have friend who owns a 60 gig an he never touched BC since getting his 60 gig...I always tell people if they want to play PS2 games buy a PS2 cause they are like what now 80 to a 100 now...Plus there are HD Collections which I prefer...

As far as i can tell, the one feature i want does not exist? Unless i missed it? I have a TON of PSN games and minis, but my original 60GB hard drive is about full, (if i had $$ i'd buy a new one), but i had to delete a bunch of the PSN games and minis I dont play much or had beaten. BUT now they are unlocked in the store, but there is no LIST of "games I own" in the PSN store!? Why is that not a tab on its own? Content you own should be displayed somewhere. Now i gotta just remember or sort through the kinda hard to navigate store..... They do have the "things downloaded" section, but that is 100's of extra pieces of content that I'd have to sort out (demos, videos, wallpapers, etc....). Please make a "GAMES OWNED" section on PSN!

Rayzakk

@Promised_Trini If you must know I already have a PS3 60gb phat that works great still but if they would bring back the bc then perhaps they would also release ps2 games on PSN. I'm sorry that you get so offended because I would like to see additional features on the PS3 and feel so smuggly that you have the solution. I have every right to desire the return of that feature, just as others want other functionality returned to theirs. I do understand that my PS3 will not last forever though and I when I one day do have to replace it I would like to have that option.

Cloud saves will only be useful if they allow immovable game saves like Vanquish, Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, and GT5 to save to the cloud. Those damn games wouldn't let me copy to a flash drive when I upgraded my HDD, so they are dead to me.

I like the auto syncing trophies option, I only hope it doesn't have the trophy update pop up window to appear everytime I exit a game. for the rest, there's nothing really special in this update. Cloud=whatever

Sorry, still not paying for PSN+. I never paid for xbox live because I refuse to pay money to use the broadband I already pay for, and I'm never paying for PSN for the same reason. But since I don't play online games on consoles, only on my PC, it doesn't affect me either way. I've already mostly moved away from my consoles anyway since the PC experience is almost always better when it comes to games.
