Best Buy begins offering rumored $400 retail configuration, which packs in 80GB console with nearly $90 of top-rated games.
With rumors of a new slimline PlayStation 3 and an August price cut still circulating, it's likely many cash-strapped would-be buyers of the console are taking a "wait and see" approach. Now, though, retailer Best Buy is trying a new tactic to get consumers to plunk down $400 for the console--by bundling it with nearly $90 worth of highly rated games.
Following a weekend of unconfirmed reports--which Sony reps dismissed as "rumor and speculation" just yesterday--Best Buy's online store is now offering the 80GB bundled with Killzone 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 for $399.99. While the former still costs $59.99, the latter was recently named a Greatest Hit by Sony and carries the collection's $29.99 price point. Both titles, however, were critically hailed, with Killzone 2 scoring a 9.0/10 rating from GameSpot and MGS4 being named the site's 2008 Game of the Year.
While the PS3 KZ2/MGS4 bundle is confirmed, it remains unclear whether or not it is exclusive to Best Buy. Currently, GameStop and Amazon are only listing the a la carte version of the 80GB PS3, and Sony reps would only offer the following statement when asked for clarification: "We work closely with all our retail partners to deliver compelling entertainment options for our consumers."
Does anybody know if I can get this bundle without buying online, and goind to a Best Buy Store instead?
PS3 slim is dumb. Why does it matter if it is fat or skinny. It sits in a box. It is absolutely hilarious that people are paying more for a skinnier version.
if ps3 slim exised they would of announced it a e3, yes if they did it would harm sales of the current verison but they announed psp go
Sony has yet to officially announce a PS3 Slim and/or price cut, so if you're planning to buy a PS3, I wouldn't sleep on this deal. Like the article stated, for $399.99 you're essentially getting a PS3 for $310 and a brand new $59.99 and $29.99 game, which would cost $489.97 sans tax if you purchased everything separately brand new. If I didn't already own a PS3 I would've purchased this bundle.
SalarianChemist- Your reading comprehension is poor to say the least. Buying MGS4 for $19 is not a better deal than getting it bundled (free) with a system. The author of this article was pointing out the cost of buying these games separately.
this is the best deal your gonna get a great console plus 2 of the best games on the system i wish i had this deal when i bought my ps3 when it came out. i thought i was tight but you lot
Wait, how exactly is this not a good deal? Metal Gear Solid 4 retails for $29.99, and Killzone 2 is still $59.99. So for the regular $399.99 price, you get essentially 1.5 full-priced games, and coincidentally 2 of the best games on the system? And people are COMPLAINING about this? Whether or not there's a new PS3 on the way, there isn't one out NOW, so people who would be buying the system NOW are getting a fantastic deal; instead of paying 400 bucks for a PS3, or a PS3 with LBP and the Wall-e blu-ray, they're getting Killzone 2 and MGS4. Man, that really sucks. Poor consumers.
Comon Sony, only $400 for this AWESOME package? It's worth at least a grand or so,pack in an extra controller and you could charge $1500 easy! Show some guts and do what you do best, stick it to your loyal customers again!!
This isn't a good deal. Everyone here brings up the same points, and I agree with them: * MGS4 can now be purchased for $29 in all stores, and as low as $19 in some stores. Having this game packed in isn't a good "deal" at all. You can save $10 by purchasing the game yourself seperately. * A better PS3 "slim" model is on the way. This new model won't have the hardware incompatibility problems with firmware updates that previous models did. * Best Buy is the worst place to buy a console from. Take a look at over 40,000 complaints against Best Buy in the last 36 months on the Better Business Bureau website. You will even see that there are five states Attorney Generals seeking legal action against Best Buy for not honoring Warranty and Insurance policies. I personally have seen how Best Buy does not honor insurance and warranties. Recently there was a TV show called "Let the Buyer Beware" that discussed all the problems with Best Buy, and the lies and deceptions that happen there. For example, Best Buy's commercials claim that their employees don't receive a commission, because Best Buy doesn't want you to think any of their employees have a selfish motive to help you. However many of Best Buy's employees do have a selfish motive to see you purchase items from their store, because their managers receive financial bonuses (e.g., commissions) based on the cumulative total of sales in the store and the ranking of that particular store compared to others.
I think this is a move from Sony to sell the PS3 they have in stock, so that they could cut off the price of the console.
Awesome bundle hopefully we might get something here in Portugal, anyways, a little off topic on the slim line, if it does go into the market won't sony think of the "lowering" the price by cutting out some of its components? and then selling them like the 360º? Anyway just a thought...
@Dragdar Really? Thats not a bad bundle at all because they are both new(great) games. Hope you enjoy your PS3 experience.
@izmickey thanks anyway, there's a good killzone 2/ infamous bundle available in europe, i can always buy mgs4 later i guess.
@dragdar i dont know dude, you can try calling the bestbuy nearest you. Sorry for not being much help.
They are finding ways to get rid of all the old stock by way of bundles and it doesn't stop here. I live in Alberta, Canada and just yesterday saw a Drake's Fortune bundle (160g) and it had Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet bundled alongside the box for $500. Thats like 420 american or something which is an amazing steal. Overpriced is a word cheap people and fanboys like to throw around.comments sections.
I hate when people say it's too expensive and then try to give the ps3 a bad name >:( thats not cool, the ps3 is the S***!!!! lol, I play my friends all the time and now im about to get this bundle without hesitation!!! GO PlayStation!!!!! :)
@P0T There needs to be more gamers like you dude, maybe its your name that gives you awesomeness. Wonder when people will drop the "its TOO expensive argument".
@Dreski83 Obtaining a BC PS3 (20, 60 OR 80GB versions) is not impossible - just a whole lot more difficult, now. You'll just have to enter 'ebay.com' in your address bar and you're practically go! =]
It's not quite a price cut, but it's a heck of a deal. I saw Best Buy offer an LBP and Wall-e blu-ray movie pack for $399 last week. The price cut has to be coming soon.
All they have to do is sell this at gamestop or sam's club or walmart and watch as the money rollz in. could have also done a resistance 2 and KZ2 with 20 dollar psn card. that would be a dream.
Thats a really good bundle! Sony needs to start making more money then they lose though. Especially now! But thats a sweet bundle.
Sounds like a real nice bundle... sadly, I missed my window of oppertunity by not scooping up one of those BC compatible PS3's... which basically killed my whole desire in owning the freaking machine :?
i love killzone and mgs there both good games and i think the buddle pack isnt half bad for newcomers to the playstaion network
Are PS3's no longer backward-compatible? Are you all saying that for those of us who haven't bought one yet, we will never have it, unless we buy a used system? __________ Yes. All PS3s since the original 60GB/20GB models do not have PS2 BC (they can still play PSone games, though).
Yeah, amazing bundle here. Especially with what the PS3 has to offer. An absolutely amazing system. Don't get me wrong, I love and own a 360, but I can't deny the awesomeness that is the PS3. But if you ask me, it looks like Sony's pushing out their 80gb systems with bundle deals to clear shelves for their rumored "PS3 Slim". Makes sense, no?
I feel sorry for the people who think these are the only 2 good games for the PS3. They must have totally missed out on Uncharted , InFAMOUS, and Resistance 1&2 !!!
I hope that activision's claims don't shut out ps3 like WB did with HDDVD. I want a ps3 more than anything, but if the console dies before I can get it then Im stuck with my ps2 psp and wii.
this package totally worth it An should increase sales. I'm sorry but this system is so under appreciated.
Good deal. These are the only two PS3 titles I really want right now so I was thinking a lot about picking up this bundle yesterday. However, I decided no because 2 games just aren't worth purchasing a system over. Maybe when R* starts releasing their PS3 exclusives, and a true price cut comes I'll think about it.
@ Sutton the newer ones (like Mine) can't play PS2 games, but PS1 games are completely playable. there are rumours of a PS2 BC firmware update around the corner, so theres still hope.
