PS3 sales on the rise as Sony suffers overall losses
PlayStation 3 hardware moves 6.5 million units for the quarter, but Consumer Products & Services division loses ¥85.7 billion overall.
Kaz Hirai will have his work cut out for him when he becomes Sony's CEO and president in April. Sony announced its third quarter earnings today, revealing slumping sales and more than $1 billion in losses for the three months leading up to December 31, 2011. On the bright side, PlayStation 3 hardware and software sales are both trending upward.
According to the earnings report released today, 6.5 million PlayStation 3 units were sold in the publisher's third quarter, an increase of 2.8 million units on the previous quarter and an increase of 200,000 units compared to the same period last year.
In PS3 software sales, Sony recorded a total of 66.2 million units sold, an increase of 28.8 million units on the previous quarter and an increase of 8.6 million units compared to the same period last year.
However, Sony's other PlayStation business was largely in decline this quarter compared to the same time last year: PSP hardware sales fell from 3.6 million to 2.4 million, while software sales for the handheld fell from 16.5 million to 11.4 million copies sold. The PlayStation 2 continued its steady decline, with hardware sales down from 2.1 million to 900,000 and software sales slipping from 5.3 million to 2.5 million units shifted.
Sony's Consumer Products & Services division--which includes the PlayStation business as well as TVs, home audio, cameras, and personal electronics--suffered an operating loss of ¥85.7 billion (US$1.1 billion), compared to an operating loss of ¥63.5 billion yen (US$834.1 million) in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year.
Year-over-year sales for the division were also down, sliding 24.4 percent to ¥996.5 billion yen (US$12.78 billion).
Companywide, Sony posted a decrease in sales of 17.4 percent year-on-year, arriving at a figures of ¥1,822.9 billion (US$23.38 billion). Sony attributed the loss primarily to the impact of the October 2011 Thailand floods, as well as a deterioration in market conditions in developed countries and "unfavorable" foreign exchange rates.
Across all divisions, Sony suffered a net loss of ¥91.7 billion (US$1.2 billion) for the quarter.
@rognard @XanderZane - sorry, but I don't think you're very familiar with reading financial reports (I'm not trying to be mean by saying that). Anything listed as a contributing factor in the Operating Losses section of a financial report is explaining the losses in that business unit. The price cut meant that even though they saw a boost in units sold, they took a loss on each one - not just reduced revenue (which it also impacted because, as you said, they need to sell more units to hit the same revenue). Otherwise, it would be noted as contributing to profits and not appear in the Operating Losses section. If they were making a profit on each unit, even a smaller profit, it would not appear in this section of the report. I think what you are getting confused with was an earlier speculative article which estimated the component costs for each system. However, that report does not factor in marketing, assembly costs, etc. ***********************SEE BELOW ****************
************************************************************* @rognard I know how to read financial reports. I used to work in Accounting. It may not say each PS3 is profiting in that report, but that doesn't mean each unit is NOT selling at a profit. The loss is because they didn't sell enough units as a whole. They make X amount of PS3 and plan on selling Y amount of PS3 for the quarter. If they don't reach that target, they post a loss. I'm well aware of marketing, manufacturing and distributing costs. They have to sell enough hardware, software, etc.. to cover the costs. I'll make it easy for you. The PS3 Slim launched Sept 1, 2009. At that time it was selling at a loss of $36. http://www.geek.com/articles/games/sony-now-losing-just-36-on-every-ps3-slim-sold-20091214/ On April 10, 2010 it was announced that ever PS3 Slim would start to profit soon. This was because of a cooler 40-nm RSX graphics chip being installed in the PS3 Slim. http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/26/sony-ps3-upgraded-with-cooler-45-nm-rsx-graphics-chip-profits-a/ On April 29, 2010 Sony announced that every PS3 Slim was now making a profit. and have been since March 2010. http://www.psuni.com/ps3-hardware-now-profitable-for-sony-3816/ So YES, every PS3 SLIM is making a profit for Sony. I know what I'm talking about.
Stuff like this is going to happen in a down economy. Hopefully my 400 dollars will help when I get my new ps3 and mw3
Any Im hoping to play all my ps3 games on my ps vita from day one now I can finally finish all my games.
It sounds like the PS3 is finally going to eventually surpass xbox 360 and wii in sales eventually, I dont want to buy a new a console every 5 years I would rather wait 10 years, Everybody likes PS3 cause it double up as blu-ray people.
one of my comment got deleted somehow, seriously
These kinds of articles are weak unless they includes sales reports for the other two console giants.
If you hadn't read the article but just the comments you would have guessed that nothing had happened. Losing billions of dollars in a quarter would seem alright. Sony fanboys...
has ps3 outsold 360 finally ?!!!!!!!!!!! they are now almost even !!!! a HOT period for console war !!!!!!!!
@caketoo I don't think its that people don't want 3D in their homes. Its more that it cost a lot in this bad economy.
Interesting, and frank, quotes from Kaz Hirai to The Wall Street Journal this week: "We really need to buckle down and be realistic. I don't think everybody is on board, but I think people are coming around to the idea that if we don't turn this around, we could be sitting in some serious trouble. We can't just continue to be a great purveyor of hardware products, even though some people expect us to do that." I can't believe all the denial and rationalization going on from the die-hard Playstation fans. Sony is a financial mess right now and the Playstation division is not a shining star for the company. I would not be surprised to see drastic layoffs in this division while they downsize and focus on the divisions still making them money (movies, music and financial services). His comment about hardware was probably a hint at what's to come - shifting from hardware (TV's and Consoles) to services - movies, music and maybe games for other systems. Sony could very well follow Sega's lead next generation. If Vita struggles in the US and Europe as much as it has in Japan, shareholders will no longer tolerate the huge R&D and initial hardware loss structure of the console industry any longer.
just hope the ps4 lives up to its hype unlike the ps3 failed to do....without most of the exclisive 3rd party support in their pocket there will be even more pressure on them next gen. specialy with the way the xbox brand name has grown this gen. they could be in real trouble if they spit out a bunch of lies when they show off the ps4....
still almost a million ps2's sold...tenacious little box o fun!
Well Playstation 3 has caught on if a little late. Sony will ride out the economic storm. They always do.
Ps2 is still selling, that is just great.
Good old Playstation. The world around it falls into ruin but it just keeps getting stronger! Goes to show all the haters :) When you look at all the exclusives already lined up for this year I'm predicting big things for the Playstation. Sucks for Sony as a whole, but if the economy manages to sort itself out they'll be on the up again.
Considering all the huge setbacks they have had last year I think they have done surprisingly well. Barring anymore massive disasters this year I think they will definately shine through overall.
I wonder when they'll officially discontinue ps2...
@CaptainHerlock Use the word totally much?? My point was if Sony completely did away with the physical PS2 hardware they might save a little money by not building a console in obvious decline. I'm not saying I'd want to play a bunch of ten year old games but having the option would be nice besides I don't have RGB cables or S-Video cable for my PS2 so if I hook up the system I'm stuck with a crap picture on a HDTV.
@AnGiTheGamer backward compatible is there you just need to buy a older version of the PS3 like the 60G might not find it new but used. Also if they do add backward compatible to the ps3 slim then the price will go up too and higher price = no one buy.
well at least theres some good news but i will say id be on my ps3 more if sony would stop takeing psn down so dang much i mean in jan it went down 3 times and now feb 2 it went down for 19hours and for what? everytime it comes up i dont see any big changes other then that its all good
I see the same thing I do with Nintendo..when your system is selling well..and you sell at a loss with each system sold..shouldn't this be expected? I for one don't consider this bad at all..it is only proving ps3 sales are on the rise which means more first party titles sold! :)
@AnGiTheGamer Yeah, backwards compatible would be nice, especially being able to upscale them. Then again, how would they make money off of those HD remakes? :)

Sad though, as I really like most of Sony's electronic lineup, except for their car audio. There Sony Explode stuff is very weak! I have a 46in 1080p Bravia LCD, which I've had for over 6 years, and it is running superb. My 320gb PS3 is also running flawless. I knew the PS3 would gain ground once their great first party titles hit the market. Its funny how many journalists, or websites reported that Sony needed to reduce the price of the PS3, or remove the Bluray drive , because it wasn't selling as well as the 360/Wii during the first year and a half, now those same journalists, and websites are recanting. Good for Sony with the PS3, just goes to show you, games sell systems, plain and simple. Hopefully they'll get their other markets going. It seems like Samsung has the market on lock-down, with Best Buy being their biggest supporter. I swear I can't get a Best Buy brochure without seeing a Samsung LCD/LED on the front!
I did say in another story that Sony was not doing well at all and some crazy fanboy told me I was wrong and that Sony is killing every one in TV's Blu-Ray and all the other things they make.. I hope he makes a comment here. LOL. Any ways, the only one who makes money off it's game box has been big N. Sony and M$ make it back with fees from dev's making games for them and selling other crap. It take a few years for them to start making money on units. M$ started making money on the 360 last year. Really, any comp that makes more things will hurt more. They make TV's game units, MP3 players, Blu-Ray players, sound systems, and all kinds of other stuff. They are a big maker and now adays guys like LG, vizeo, Samsung, and Panasonic are really making good stuff and selling for less. Right now Samsung and Panasonic are making some of the best stuff. Sony has never made the best. I remember a time before the playstation brand when Sony brand was that poor mans go to TV and could only be found at K mart or some low end store. They have come a long away but SOny only did well because of its name behind the playstation. I do not mean to sound like some Sony hater or anything like that but it is the truth.
@LindBergh2007 That was the most funnyest comment I have run into all day.. " Sony's best option is to upgrade PS3's graphics cards with Radeon 5000 chips or something and sell it a markup." Sony is coming out with PS4 in 2013... Duhhhh.
tarv4973. By that time, SEGA could be on their way out with another console.(they're launching a new tablet this spring and have filed a new multimedia trademark called "ORBI".) Sony's best option is to upgrade PS3's graphics cards with Radeon 5000 chips or something and sell it at a markup.
If Vita flops in the US and Europe like it is in Japan, Sony is going to be in real trouble. The Playstation 3 is just now starting to earn a profit for them. They can't afford to end its life cycle early to move to the next gen like Nintendo and Microsoft can. I personally think Sony should wait it out and see how sales of the Wii-U and Nextbox do before jumping in.
Sony will probably make more profits but with a new CEO and president, noone really knows for sure. At least PS3's still selling. Wish they were backwards compatible.
Soothsayer42. As of 2012, there's no such thing as a PS4. No trademark,no patent, nothing. It doesn't exist.
ah ps2 backward compatability - that boat sailed when they removed it -hoping to make a buck by recoding the ps2 games and sell them on- line unfortunatly not many of the publishers went along with the scheme too late for PS2 compatability- either have a fat boy or a ps2. just hope they don't leave out PS3 compatabilty when the next gen is released
I don't want sony to drop their cutting edge habits, but I still want them to make profits somehow.
PS3 is still the best ;) and so will the PS4
@CaptainHerlock The real story is in Sony's TV wing.
@MJ12-Conspiracy I've seen this whole "if they totally like put PS2 backward compatibility in like totally the PS totally 3 they'd totally sell more totally consoles... totally". The PS3 is still a loss leader. They make money on the GAMES, not the console. If you buy a PS3 and play your ten year old PS2 games, that completely defeats the purpose, and you might as well have bought a PS2.
Wow i'm surprised the ps2 actually sold at all.
So according to GameSpot the "other Playstation business was largely in decline..." were a handheld that's going to be replaced by a new model, and an eleven year old console that everyone already has? GameSpot; Fair and Balanced.
@8a8eh911 Pathetic Xbot
Nothing news worthy here really, PSP sales dropped because of PSV, its software sales dropped because anyone planning to buy PSV in the near future would have to pay to play the sames games again. PS2 is old and PS3 is becoming cheap enough for even the less fortunate. A mistake Nintendo made was announcing WiiU so early, that lowered their holiday sales, and while 360 typically leads weekly sales in the US, the rest of the world doesn't think its that great of a console, combine those two and PS3 sales go up. PS3 still sold the least in the US during the holidays, but i blame that on their economic situation, and also both 360 and Wii had consoles at about $100 Most people at this point have an HDTV, at least an upscaling DVD player, and some also have some sort of sound system, those are all thing that people tend to keep for several years. Laptops, and especially cell phones are things that consumers replace more frequently. Sony also needs to get beck in the OLED/4K development market, cuz thats what the next gen TVs people will upgrade to, i don't want 3D, definitely not one that need active shutter glasses. Passive 3D TVs are still new and need some refinement. Digital cameras sales are also on a decline for two reason, cell phones, and there is no need to go from 12mp to 14mp, I bough 12.1mp last year, up until then i used a 3.2mp camera that i have had since 2003
@fedetacoSony Best products = Ps3, Bravia lcd, and I hope PS vita Dvds, playstation move and sony Ericsson cellphones ......well the opposite.... My favorite laptop from sony was my old Sony Tr3a mini laptop. I think they do pretty well in that division.
The change in sales for all PS consoles are expected. On the other hand, the overall drop in business for Sony is dire news indeed. I hope I won't soon see a day when I can no longer buy high quality Japanese electronics.
I only come here to read the thumbs down comments.
Sony Best products = Ps3, Bravia lcd, and I hope PS vita Dvds, playstation move and sony Ericsson cellphones ......well the opposite....:(
They should've mentioned how much long the company could take a beating for.
@pszone, Wat did you say?

Sony might have a great plan for PS4 and there is a lot PS3 Excsllives and they keep them coming . Even sony lose a lot money they will have a big plan what might will work out. Sony dont care if they win like i said its nothing about winning . reason mircosoft on top because the red ring and pp keep buying them. Next xbox will not let you sale your own games and your stuck with the games and see how want to get more richer. I have no against it but i dont like the idea the next xbox turning like and no i buy new games not pre owned but im thinking other pp who havent got much money. For a game so anyway so ya they doing next gen games for ps4 but they want to take there time since sony dont want to rush anymore and thats gd thing for me and ps3 owners
Sony are copy cats Ps3- Xbox360 Ps3 move = Nintendo wii Cameras = Cannon Tv screens = Samsung Seriously sony stop copying and make your own ideas. The world is a better place without you
Ya babe sony is going down to the sewers and microsoft back to the top where it should be and always will
