PS3 to require HDMI for HD movies, games?

Sony you should totally package an HDMI hub with this. Better yet send me a Bravia with like 10 HDMI ports cause I only have 2.

@colonialpikachu you are wrong. component cables are the red green and blue cables for video and red, white cables for 2 channel audio. the yellow cable for video and red, white cables for 2 channel audio is called a COMPOSITE cable. Composite can only do 480i. A good component cable can do 1080p. but since the cable is analog. the quality of the cable effects the picture quality greatly. that isnt the case for hdmi, since the picture is digital. and hdmi can do hd sound.

@survivor9712 first of all I don't agree with the people thumbing you down. All this component, composite, HDMI cables stuff is understandably confusing. If you had a Playstation 1 back in the day you had a set of Composite cables that came with it to plug into your TV. They were the Red, Yellow, and White RCA cables. Now component cables are the same type of plugs, but they are color coded differently. They have red, green, and blue RCA plugs. However, I believe that those 3 cables alone only give you the picture on the screen. You may need another set of red and white RCA cables for the sound. HDMI is the best for 2 reasons... With only 1 HDMI cable you get picture AND sound, and it also looks the best as far as picture quality.

@ survivor9718 Component cables are those old white/yellow/red cables you had with a Gamecube or PS2. The newer ones are red/blue/green and can carry more data, so they can take HD signals.

Remember, there's a reason that the HDMI format is a standard. Because it's a standard, the actual cable is not going to differ between manufacturers. The most that companies selling "high end" HDMI cables can offer you is better insulation. At a good deal you can get 3 HDMI cables for $7. Much better than 1 HDMI cable for $100.

Just remember this people. I don't care what anyone tells you there is BARELY any difference between the $10 HDMI cables and those bullcrap $100 Monster brand cables. For the average person you can pay 10 bucks and be fine.

@JOKER677 Cables are cheap, yes. But TVs aren't. Some people have perfectly good full HD TVs without HDMI inputs (just yippers instead). They would have to get a new TV just to watch BR movies in HD.

What's do bad about the switch? These are around 10$ on Amazon if your not trying to buy Monster cords for 100$

@Zerabp I suppose I should be letting him defend himself, but OriginalXboxGmr has already stated that he owns a Sony Wega KD-30XS955 CRT set (no flat panel) that can display as high as 1080i. That's still a whole lot nicer looking than DVDs or Blu-Rays restricted to 480i.

@OriginalXboxGmr If you are watching any hd medium on a non-hdtv you are wasting your time it will not look any better then dvd unless you upgrade your tv.

Well, I suppose it sucks, but I really don't like playing my PS3 with component cables, HDMI just looks so much better and it only costs like $10. Pay any more and you're wasting your money for no difference in quality. So...sucks for people still on Standard Definition. I understand there's still a lot of people who use SD, but, well, nothing you can do in this case.

@OriginalXboxGmr Either that, or try to snap one up now while the ones that support HD over component are still available. My thing though, is that this isn't really Sony's fault this time. Much as they may annoy me with a great number of other things, with this they're just following the standards for Blu-Ray players that everyone else must adhere to as well. It's crap all around.

Sony claimed to get rid of BC because they wanted PS3 gamers to buy PS3 games and not anything from that awesome library of PS2 games, and now they get rid of watching movies in HD probably because they want people to buy Sony's overpriced HDTVs. Fine, if I get a new HDTV at a comparable price to a Sony HDTV then I'm getting a Samsung because they're better anyways. Anyhow, I'm glad I have a launch PS3 with BC and can play movies in HD with component cables, seemed a bit overpriced when I got it but when I read stuff like this I'm glad I got it when I did.

@beanz777 I'm ashamed to say this but when I got my first ps3 I used my ps2 component cables for about 6 months lol. I like games based on fun factor; I don't care about graphics. Later I bought both a component hd cable and a hdmi cable to compare. They both show the same in HD; however the hdmi cost 4 times as much as the hd component cables. I wish the game companies just package everything inside the box and charge higher. I can't stand buying a product; only to have to go back to the store to buy another product; to run the product. I just bought. That's false advertising.

Why are people worrying about component cables at this age, I'm already started thinking of wireless HDMI connections.

So there are people who still use component? That's a bit dated now, the only thing in my house using anything other than HDMI is the Wii thing the wife uses and my old PS2.

This is complete bs****... 5 years into a console you'd expect them to get their act together...The PS3 will be a true case study for mishandled product management... It's PS2 compatible.... Now it's not.. It has state of the art hd gaming.. for like 3 years years ps3 titles were subpar to x360 with same games only up to 720p... You have 2 hard drives capacities... There have been like 7 (from 20gb to 320gb... Lets do a genius move and launch without rumble feature in our controller.. Now its dual shock again... You can run other OS... now you cant..... It has 4 USB ports.. now it doesnt..... It has internet gaming... not for a month a half... It protects your personal and credit card data...not really... It has a great new avatar system PSHome... It's really crappy... It supports HD video through your $30 dolar OFICIAL SONY COMPONENT cable... Now it doesnt... As a consumer i think it is the system that i have been more let down... PS. - I own one..It got "yellow lighted"...Waiting to buy a new one...Meanwhile..I have a component cable... I play online ... I have a huge ps 2 library... i watch blu rays... But ultimately.. I loath what sony has done with the PS3

@wisealex Exactly. This isn't going to hinder the pirates in any way, so all it does is hurt the legitimate users. As it usually seems to be with copy protection and DRM in most cases. Granted I suppose there aren't that many people watching Blu-Rays over component, but still. At least they aren't restricting the games with this.

Why? Because hard disk recorders don't usually have HDMI inputs, so it will be harder to record HD films and pirate them. Not that it will stop the pirates they will just use BR equipped PCs anyway.

This is pretty moronic. I mean why? What does it really matter, all its going to do is have the tech junkies that work @ best buy and gamstop list it as a negative for the playstation when customers ask questions. bad idea.

@Mondrath You are confusing composite (one phono cable) with component/yipper cables (3 phono cables). While composite cables can only really handle PAL or NTSC, yipper can handle full HD.

I think this is a bad idea. I understand, but still think bad idea.

Component cables on the Wii allow you get at least get 480p output, while composite limits you to 480i. I use component cables on my PS2 for 480p output in games that support it, and it makes a world of difference on an HDTV.

Component supports 1080p just fine, as long as the copy protection doesn't prevent you from using it (which it always has for Blu-Rays). Games run just fine at 1080p over component, and look exactly the same as 1080p over HDMI.

@OriginalXboxGmr The issue with that is that this isn't Sony's doing, it's a requirement of the AACS standards. Any Blu-Ray player made after Dec 31st 2010 cannot display Blu-Ray movies any higher than 480i over component. So buying a standalone Blu-Ray player won't help any, unless you get an older one. The idea is still ridiculous to me, but this one doesn't seem to be on Sony. And fortunately, I haven't heard anything about them updating the older PS3s to remove this feature, which they won't be required to do as far as I'm aware.

This makes sense. Even though the current PS3 can output to HD television component output is not true high definition. How many people have a PS3 who output to an old television anyways? Isn't that sort of like buying an actual race car for use as a daily driver?

I once asked a Sears employee if a tv I was buying was HDCP compliant, and he said "Durs, HDCP cables don't exist" I said "No, *** hole, is it HDCP COMPLIANT?" *****ing MORON! :roll: 2. No crap you need HDMI cables for hd movie playback. Blu Ray requires HDCP compliance.
