PSN accounts getting a name change
Beginning February 7, the PlayStation Network will be officially folded into Sony Entertainment Network; new terms of use prohibit canceling preorders.
Later this week, PlayStation Network accounts will become Sony Online Entertainment accounts, the Japanese technology giant announced today.
The change will happen on February 7 when players sign on to the service and accept the new terms of service, user agreement, and privacy policies. At that time, all PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita (but not PSP) accounts will be rebranded as SEN.
According to Sony, the change is in name only, and users will not be asked to change their passwords or usernames.
"This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music, and more," reads a line from Sony's statement.
The Sony Entertainment Network was first announced in August as a service that included Sony's three major online businesses: PSN, Video Unlimited, and Music Unlimited.
The new terms of service and policy agreements include a number of changes, among them a specific clause that preorders placed through PSN cannot be canceled.
"You may not cancel a preorder at any time, and refunds are not available for preorders, subject to applicable laws," reads the line from the document.
In September, the PSN's terms of service agreement was updated to prohibit class-action lawsuits against Sony. Months later, Sony was sued over the issue, with a northern California man claiming unfair business practices on the part of the technology giant.
[CORRECTION]: This article originally stated the change was set to take effect February 8. We regret the error.
Btw this just get's more ridiculous obviously Sony just is Microsoft there the same businesses in my opinion.
lame - any store allows for refund if u cancel a preorder unless its already sent or like day before or so not that i would ever buy a preorder or full game from ps3 store anyway - their prizes are insane compared to normal places where u actually get a box and dont use up ur hard drive space... i know companies need to earn money but if they try too much they will end up loosing customers... how hard is that to understand???
@linkdarkside Yes
do VITA games have thouphys?
What's even better...the new TOS allows them to track children who are signed up under a parents account. Couple that with them not being liable for loss of personal data and I guess we know where all the pedo's in the world want to work.
@dxdevilex0 Yeah exactly, it's a coincidence.. The fact Kaz hasn't even started in his position yet pretty much takes him out of the equation. He'd have no reason to implement such measures anyway, it'll be the executives of marketing making those decisions.
So... Is it me, or Sony is all of a sudden being as greedy as MS? Soon enough Live and PSN will be both bad.
@warhawk-geeby Kaz just got annouced to be president and now this? It's too much of a coincidence if you ask me.
The one who orders from Sony are the people like the websites from which we normally order like amazon , flipkart , play Asia etc ..... They have to pre order so they can stock up and sell us
Thank goodness I don't pre-order anything on official game company websites, including PSN/SEN. Who'd want to pre-order or even buy from these official sites and portals anyway? Their prices are generally terrible.
Two options: Don't pre-order from Sony or make absolute sure that you will definitely want what you are pre-ordering.
remember, if you use your credit card, you can always put a stop order/payment on your purchase from the credit card company so sony still can't steal your money
inb4 Sony e-shop
piss off sony ....................
Well reading that clause, you can cancel and get a refund for your pre-order as long as it is allowed under state law or even federal law. I see no problem here, :)
Who preorders over PSN anyway?
is what happening really THAT big of an issue... :\ was THAT many people really planning on cancelling. xD
another greedy move from sony..... this is to stop you from canceling your pre order after you find out the games didnt live up to the hype.. this change will only help sony not its gamers.....
i used to be so proud of Sony, and my playstation. this is so terrible. But i still won't buy the X-Pac
WTF Happened to this company. We were number 1. supposedly untouchable this gross mis-management must be stopped.
they changed it JUST FOR THE NAME?????? come on sony, even i don't believe tht, all i can see is money
Wow....im amazed and quite shocked at how far the games industry will go for money.
They're inventing all kinds of new "incentives" to preorder games and now they can tap into a new market of trapping people in contracts to sell their games because the were blinded by the "EXCLUSIVE PREORDER IN-GAME BULL SH*T ORDER NOW!". The whole industry is going to sh*t.
PSN sounds better imo, but I guess if Sony wants to join movie, music, and game communities together, then SEN is the way to go. It is a mouthful, though, I will admit. Say.... SEN is NES backwards!
online play that all i want thanks
So now I have a SEN account. And cannot cancel pre-orders. PSP accounts are still PSN? Since the PSP 1000E model from the Pal region doesn't have wi-fi no need for a SEN account.
I got excited thinking they would allow people to change their PSN ID now. Oops
Good lord they are replacing the letters P, S and N with S, E and N!! THE SKY IS FALLING!
Well I can truly say I've never pre-ordered anything from PSN, but the clause in the terms of service is fairly harsh. You can cancel a pre-order anywhere else in the world, may guess is this will get shunned. And quite possibly another lawsuit. @dxdevilex0 Kaz hasn't started his position yet.. it's April 1st. And I sincerely doubt this had anything to do with him :?
Non-refundable online preordering... that sounds like a cash net for unwary travelers.

Well if they make the move to start paying for online gaming because of this whole name change then Sony is gonna be in some deep sh!t... That's one of the main reason most ppl at on psn and what about the playstation name...? Will we still call playstation home playstation? PS+? I just hope its just a name change period.. nothing more
Seems like making Kaz the president was a wrong move.
as long as they don't start charging for online because remember they said "PSN will always be free" well PSN will end tomorrow and SEN will take over but i suppose on a business standpoint for sony it makes more sense to keep everything under one roof (so to speak) well we will see tomorrow wont we
I see the sense now in sticking with Xbox Live. PSN sounded more free then SEN.
Tomorrow will be the End of the World :D 8th of February Lets wait and see what can happen when we turn on our PS3s
Seems consumer protections and privacy is becoming extinct. America is the new China.
Hmm..... SEN, for some reason I automaticly think Nintendo....... Oh yeah. Anyways I could care less, I just want some kind of party or cross chat feature.
Is not earth shattering as it seems.
I'm about to join this SEN, guess I'll never know what psn was like
People pre-order over the PSN.....why?
will anything happen to my ps+ suscription?
"You may not cancel a preorder at any time, and refunds are not available for preorders, subject to applicable laws, this industry is getting rather hostile to consumers
Ok fine. They changed the name. So what? How about changing stuff in their system that matters? -_-
Sounds like Sony is trying to help us all forget about the PSN hack last year lol
@ mario-nin-freak What do you mean they don't want to sound like Nintendo Network? By calling it SEN they are much more like Nintendo Network now, instead of their brand name (PlayStation Network), it's their company's name now and the Nintendo Network use Nintendo's company name, not Nintendo's brand name (Wii, 3DS, etc.).
If Sony was a goverment it would be on a path to dictatorship
"SEN", easier to say, but I like "PSN" better.
prohibit canceling preorders.??? what the . . . .
