Race Driver One on the GRID
Third iteration in Codemasters' TOCA racing series will take to the streets for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in mid-2008.
Last year, Codemasters felt a name change was in order for its long-running Colin McRae rally-racing series, at which point it aptly dubbed the through-the-trenches racer DIRT. The UK-based publisher today unveiled a similar tack with its TOCA street-racing series, replacing the game's working title, Race Driver One, with the punched-up moniker GRID.
Presumably in reference to a racetrack's starting grid, Codemasters' latest racer again lets aspiring Andrettis hop behind the wheel of various high-powered automobiles for street and drift racing. GRID features a turbocharged version of Codemasters' DIRT game engine, as well as car and environment damage. Players will be able to compete in a variety of race types across the US, Europe, and Asia. For more on GRID, check out GameSpot's recent preview.
GRID will arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in mid-2008. It has not yet been rated or priced.
from the interviews with codemasters CEO it sounds like they've taken the good stuff from TOCA and dumped it in favor of stuff with a 'broader appeal' for the US market - so no v8supercars, no DTM, just a clone of NFS type racing... They have said they may resurrect TOCA in a new format, but it will be a looooong way off... it's a shame really it was a great series...
it better have the scottish guy in, he makes the single player with this game !
I like it. I've always been a GT racer but this has grabbed my attention.
I hope this game gon be better than NFS pro street
Is this game gonna feature ACTUAL touring car events like the the Australian V8 SUPERCAR CHAMPIONSHIP! or just stuff like drifting and what looks to me like illegal street racing?
look better than nfs prostreet.. hahha
In response to the Jeff Gerstmann story, I would add that I saw a demo/review on Bravo and it looked very poor indeed. Sounds like he gave it a proper review. Looked similar to but far poorer than Army of Two. If this is true, I don't think we can trust the reviews on this site anymore.
Nooooooo, what on earth? "street and drift racing" You have got to be joking!?!?! I've loved the TOCA/RaceDriver games from the start, now you do this? Drift racing SUCKS!!!!!!
We've heard an unsettling rumor today from an anonymous tipster that longtime game reviewer Jeff Gerstmann from Gamespot has been let go. That wouldn't necessarily be newsworthy, but the conditions under which he was allegedly dismissed were. According to the source, Gerstmann was fired "on the spot" due to advertiser pressure for his review of Eidos' Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. A visit to Gamespot shows that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game has taken over the site very prominently, with backgrounds and multiple banner ads all pitching Kane & Lynch. Allegedly, publisher Eidos "took issue with the review and threatened to pull its ad campaign." Jeff's review was certainly less than glowing. He assigned the game a 6.0, otherwise known as "Fair" on the Gamespot scale. The game is currently enjoying a Metacritic score in the 65 to 69 range, which the site describes as "mixed or average reviews." According to our tipster, it wasn't necessarily the score that was reason for Gerstmann's rumored axing, but the "tone" of the review. Gerstmann has been no stranger to controversial reviews, as his scores of 10 for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 8.8 for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess had sensitive internet users up in arms. It's now possible that many bitter fanboys may have had their wishes for his firing granted. As our tipster points out, if the rumor is true, it could point to a distressing precedent at Gamespot and parent company CNet. "As writers of what is supposed to be objective content, this is our worst nightmare coming to life," wrote the tipster. Our efforts to confirm the story with Gamespot haven't proved successful. Our current requests with PR, Gerstmann and other CNet contacts have either gone unanswered or yielded a "no comment." http://kotaku.com/gaming/rumor/gamespot-editor-fired-over-kane--lynch-review-328244.php

WHY!?!?!?!? i loved the tocas. and the race drivers. why do we now have to drift and street race in our "pimped" out loser mobiles?? screw street racing games! they suck ass. i want british touring cars, DTM championship, the australian super touring cars and GT cahmpionships. thats what made the race drivers so good as it was made up of many different classes of championships which were all amazingly fun circuit racing. i dont wanna make my car "better" by giving it a crap paintjob and adding un-aerodynamic skirts and a spoiler.leave this crap to the awful need for speeders.
DIRT was the successfull game, and now coming Race Driver, thats perfect thinking.
Excellent!!
that would be the 4th game in race driver series. with street racing and drifting this sounds like an all new game. this sounds great
What do they mean 3rd iteration? Wasn't there 3 games on the last gen consoles? Or does it mean this is the third generation of systems the series has shown up on?
Well I like Dirt even tho I've never really been into the series and ended up buying it. I hope this game will be just as fun.
as long as the series are there, im interested.
I look forward to a demo, Codemasters. :)
NiCE
Sounds good...But we'll have to wait and see.
V8 SUPER CARS !!!
cool! not sure if I should get it for PS3 or PC...

This is the most underrated racing series on the market. It's been great for years and has never been truly appreciated in the US.
i might get this 1.
Sounds like it could be good.
It sounds interesting.......
can't wait
Car and environment damage... I hope they do it right. If they do, this will definitly beat NFS.
Cool...though I'd have to admit to some queasiness reading the 'version of the Codemasters DIRT game engine.' DIRT was a fun game, but very arcadey and my biggest complaint was that the vehicles handled poorly and the sense of momentum was just wonky. Given how TOCA's driving has held up previous iterations, I hope they're doing some serious turbocharging to that engine to fix its flaws, otherwise I'll easily go from a buy to a rental.
I just love TOCA Race Driver series.... this can be the ultimate racing sim... errrr... no, maybe not but the game should be great!
okayyyyyyy
