Capcom CFO tells Reuters summit that latest survival horror shooter was just 30,000 units from going quintuple-platinum at the end of April.
Capcom ended its 2009 fiscal year with a bang in March, seeing total revenues near $1 billion as early-year releases Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV compensated for the publisher's weak holiday-quarter lineup. Capcom's zombie-infused shooter paid particular dividends, with RE5 seeing an initial global shipment to retailers of 4 million units.
As part of the Reuters Global Technology Summit in Tokyo, Japan, last week, Capcom's chief financial officer, Kazuhiko Abe, provided an update on RE5 sales, saying that the survival horror game sold 4.4 million units globally by the end of March. That same month, US game industry sales were down 17 percent year-over-year as RE5 led software with a combined 1.52 million units across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game.
Abe also indicated that RE5 is quickly approaching the 5-million-unit-sold mark--if it hasn't already achieved the milestone. "We are still enjoying strong demand, very strong demand, that is," the executive said. "In the single month of April, sales came to as many as 570,000 units." Combined with 4.4 million units already sold through March, RE5 would have needed to sell a mere 30,000 units in May to surpass the next platinum-level milestone.
Abe further noted that RE5 sales are now expected to exceed 1 million units during Capcom's current fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010. The PC edition of the game is expect to launch later this year. Earlier this month, the publisher forecast fiscal-year sales of ¥95 billion ($961.3 million), with operating income projected to rise to ¥15.5 billion ($156.9 million).
This is one of the best games of the series. I cannot stop playing it, either in story mode, mercs, or versus modes. It is simply awesome, and I hope they are really working on RE6. 8)
and there is a rumer going round that capcom are working on re6 and i hope they are. with the same game style
this game is mint the grapices are the best grapices i hv seen in a action/adventure. the story line is great also. every thing in this game i love. and if anyone once to play with me on it my psn is cs-7 and i also hv the dlc for it
I wonder how many of these 470,000 copies have had their competitive multiplayer components "unlocked", i.e. how many millions of extra $$$ Capcom has made by charging US$5 to unlock the competitive multiplayer...
xophaser, I completely agree with you, RE 5 was the bets game to come out this generation. I love the combat system and yes even the can't walk and shoot crap people seem to B%$£$ about, as I stated before, Thats RE's style, if you wnat to move and shoot play something else. I want capcom to bring back the scary atmosphere aswell. RE 4 was aswome with the regenerators, they were creepy as hell. Bring back some insane creepy foes in the next Installment Capcom.
Fady117, RE5 is nothing more than an extension of RE4. Just like RE2 through CV and 0 were nothing but RE1 with extra maps, story and puzzles. Now for your information, RE4 and 5 are far from anything COD or Halo-like, etc. If people find similarities between these RE games and Gears, they should realize that RE4 came out almost 2 years before Gears 1, a game whose own creators are cited to be inspired by RE4 (and other games). RE5 was made for those who liked RE4, and there were many. What's beyond me is, how come no one complained when Halo 3 was so similar to the other Halos, when Gears 2 was practically more of Gears 1, when all the CODs were so much alike. Oh, and that list of 'rip-offs' you made, that's plain nit-picking. Childish to be honest.
Hey did anyone notice the rip-offs.... that biker looked like he swinged the chain like in Ghost Rider!!! and hey, the zombie in red shirt, he opened the mouth like in Blade 2 (movie). Plus u have most of the action in broad daylight (as in RE: Extinction movie). damn, Capcom need to tweak their franchise even more!!! RE's losing its spirit....
Had one thought in mind... guys, this franchise is losing its essence, if it hasn't already lost it with RE4 and Code Veronica. I played Code Veronica and felt it more like an action game. RE4 was mostly run-and-shoot-em-all. But both were better than RE5. I agree, Capcom are integrating more action than horror in RE, plainly for money (coz that's how COD and GOW fans like it). We already have GOW, COD, Unreal, HALO, Quake, Doom, BioShock, L4D, Killing Floor, FallOut. etc. MAKE SOMETHING SPECIAL, CAPCOM. GIVE US SOMETHING SCARY. SCARCE AMMO. RIDDLES AND RIDDLES. TOUGH LAST-MINUTE SITUATIONS. LOTS OF DARKNESS AND DIFFICULTY. AND PLEASE, A BIT FASTER ZOMBIES. Anyone agrees with this?
So 5 million people bought Resident Evil 4.5? Only major upgrade here is now Ashely has a gun and your inventory is smaller.
The game's great but I really hope none of those 5 million are buying the vs mp. Then Capcom might realise that what they did was very wrong.
@dubel_07 I don't want to play this because it's more of an action game than a survival horror game.
Ahh yes... people speak their minds out talking like they know it all when they should really only speak for themselves... its kinda really hard making these games so I am happy with what they gave... I myself am a Leon guy but it would be cool to finally see em together (Chris and Leon)... and i prefer the variety of guns in RE4 cause of their specialties e.g. Red9 with Stock. They say there will be another RE so hope they keep the Co-op...
I see on a lot of post that people didn't care for the way that RE is heading to action than survival horror. I was thinking how Capcom can please both type of people. Do like the Call of Duty series. You now have 2 differnt series now.Capcom can do the same. The virus that created slow-moving zombies is still out there. Also, Capcom can go back in the past get stories with the slow-moving zombies. Capcom just has to be made to believe that there is money in doing this.
Chris-Parker I totally agree with you man! I pretty much wrote my review based on that main aspect in itself. I mean seriously the resident evil franchise is suppose to be survival horror to extreme... Not Left 4 dead running gunning type of game. But yeah anyways I'm glad the game is doing pretty well but gosh I hope they bring back the good old days with those type of graphics the new game would be pure sweetness.
I dont no why everyones not happy with it. It may not have been the best resident evil but it was still a realy good game. Gaaaahhhd chill your beef :P
Personally I didn't rate Resident Evil 5 that much! It seems to have moved away from what I loved about the series! I hope that the next game steps back a little to the old errie mansion/ lots of puzzles vibe. Plus I wanna see proper Zombies again not red eyed men throwing axes. Just my opinion!!!
@ Spanishflea12 Meanwhile you have an avatar of one of the most overrated, metrosexual video game characters of all time. Awesome. Loser.
no puzzles? mostly. no excitement? what does that mean, the game is not exciting? how exactly is that objective. cheesy one-liners? wow, so you've never played an RE game before, i see. The series lost its horror since Code Veronica when you could shoot at two targets at the same time with dual wielded SMGs. i doubt RE5 is just money, there is so much detail and polish in certain aspects of that game, i just can't agree with you there. Also, learn what an FPS is, because RE4 and 5 are definitely not FPS.
The only reason it earned so much money was because its just like every other first person shooter. Its just an action game with a familiar title. No puzzles, no excitement, cheesy one-liners, and the abolishment of horror in the series. Sorry Resident Evil 5 fans, but this game isnt what it should have been, its just money now.
BilSabab, You like an old-school RE dog like me. Bring back more puzzles, scare and atmosphere (no bad camera angle/control though). I paused before I opened those doors back in the days. I guess the younger crowd could compare the scare/chill of Dead Space to the orginal RE1. Since Dead Space used the same tricks, I didn't really feel the scare, plus I had plenty of amno.
Great to hear I loved this game going through Pro right now. I think it was way to short and the ending was so disappointing (can't remember the last time i was this disappointed with an ending). Other then that one of the best games I've played this year.
good for capcom. They are without a doubt on the best in the game industry. I'd have to say this though I liked Resident evil 4 alot more, but 5 was really good too..... and the co-op was just plain fun. One thing I did like about Resident evil 5 is the achievements weren't so hard... I mean they were, but not impossible.....like some other games out there...
@xophaser Completely agree with u mate, it was a nice evolution the franchise made with RE4, but in 5 it kind of lost its essence, not saying its a bad game , its definitely one of the best games of the year, however Capcom should reconsider going back to the spooky atmosphere of the previous titles and at least make some puzzles, no too tedious though. So, for me I'm fine with the combat system of now, but it would be great if they mix it with some aspects from the previous games, cuz if peope ask for the character to run'n shoot, then this franchise will become simply like another FPS.
Congrats Capcom on that impressive sales milestone. Though I wished that the atmosphere and some enemy types in RE5 had changed it was still a great game it had awesome Co-op and the game was fun from start to finish. Hope RE6 or any other spinoffs are as fun as RE5 and scary as RE 4.
Been enjoying RE, since the "Jill-sandwich and master of unlocking" lines. Played RE5 too much, got all trophies except for "Who Do You Trust"(no $5 download also) Agreed with most people here, it needs to go back to its root as a survival horror, but then it won't be a shooter. Then you get shooter fans that say it too tough. Survival horror give you like barely enough bullets like Silent Hill.
like all RE's the first part is scarey! but they need to bring back the horror in the game, I love RE4 and 5 but the Zombies having machine guns is too much. thats a shooting game not RE. take a chance capcom bring back the survival horror with RE4 and 5 style, even make it co-op, overcrowd with zombies and puzzles, the puzzles dont have to be hard but it adds that scare factor. but as a fan each RE has been excellent but i havent had no fear like that first RE, or maybe its because i was 11 lol
Yes RE5 is a great game IMHO. i do not get all the whining some people do about the game. the Sheva AI is great, it could have had a little longer campaign but even as it is its longer than a lot of exclussive games like gears of war and killzone 2. Greatgame well worth my 60 bucks thats for sure
@ da_illest101 I wouldn't say it was horrible...just not fun, scary or with a good story :( The gameplay was solid though. LOL :)
uh, RE5 horrible? are you kidding me? the game was far from horrible, in fact, it was great. give me a break. people over-react so much when their ridiculous hyping is not satisfied.
Good for Capcom, I enjoyed a lot the game and practically play it to 100% cuz of the great replay value it has, now that they're doing so well can they finally start working on some franchises like Darkstalkers or any other crossover fighter, pleaseeee...
I was really hoping that a company charging 5$ for content that should have already been included would get less sales, but I admit that I did end up renting RE5
Well survival horror would have been good. Most gamers like action nowadays. I've played RE since the first one was released on PS and it's been nice watching the series grow into what it is. To be honest I'd never go back to old school Resident Evil.
While it wasn't as scary as the other 4 installments, and the soundtrack wasn't very memorable, it's still a pretty good game in terms of gameplay and co-op.
It seems that most ppl in this forum didn't find the game scary enough. Well the co-op did take away from the fear. While playing the game I was pretty damn scared but not totally scared like I was when I was RE 4 or 3. I guess if you want a scary game then you guys should buy Dead Space. That game will scare you half to death.
