Resident Evil 6 boasts 600 developers

Executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi calls project largest undertaken by Capcom; game to meld action, survival horror.

Capcom appears to be sparing no expense with Resident Evil 6. In a message posted to YouTube this week (below), executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi characterized Resident Evil 6 as being the largest project undertaken by Capcom to date, with some 600 developers involved worldwide.

"Between the 150 staff members in Japan and everyone around the world, we have more than 600 people involved. A lot of work has gone into this game," Kobayashi said. "Resident Evil 6 is by far and away the most ambitious game in the series."

With Resident Evil 6, it appears as if Capcom may seek to reconcile Resident Evil's survival horror roots with more recent installments' action-oriented gameplay. Later in the video, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi indicated that the game will be a blend of action and survival horror, which the team is calling "dramatic horror."

Announced last week, Resident Evil 6 features a split plotline, with one fork following the travails of Leon S. Kennedy in the US and another taking up with Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member Chris Redfield in China. The game is expected to arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 20.

@Otaku313 I will admit that the AI isn't really helpful alot of times. I guess you are referring to trying to play the game on harder difficulties with the AI. Fortunately, I have two distant friends that enjoys playing RE 5, so I was able to play through the tougher difficulty settings. I guess we just have to see what happens when the game comes out. Maybe you can tell the AI to hide in a garbage can, LOL! Or maybe that did away with some of the features that forces two characters to be together. You never know. Now if there is one RE game with co-op I am not fond of it is Operation Raccoon City.

Otaku313 5 pts

@vengefulwilberg Ok, thats something we can agree on. My ONLY problem with RE55 CO-OP was that if I wanted to play "single" player I dont want a dumb as nails sidekick getting me killed all the time. But since the game(levels and all) where built around CO-OP, that would be impossible. If RE6 has it, I wouldnt care less about it if I can go through the campaign alone, if I wish.

vengefulwilberg 7 pts

@Otaku313 Well....I never said every single game needs co-op. Not all games need co-op. If alot of the things that God of War had was taken out due to co-op, then I wouldn't really accept it. And the Darkness 2 seemed to suffer; because of the bad direction they went with the co-op feature. The game is far too short. Resident Evil is a great franchise and the co-op in RE 5 was great; so why not. If the co-op feature was done poorly I would have had doubts about making another RE game with co-op.

Otaku313 5 pts

@vengefulwilberg Does every game need CO-OP to stay relevant?

Godyssey 11 pts

@vengefulwilberg Its ok. I saw it on Reddit like 30 minutes after the trailer came out.

vengefulwilberg 7 pts

@Godyssey Sure is. I couldn't believe it. LOL! If you want to see for yourself I can find the link and post it here. LOL!...again.

Godyssey 11 pts

@vengefulwilberg LOL @ you saying thats originally from the Gamespot forums XD

@Otaku313 Dead Space was pretty darn good as far as scares go; however after you beat the game then what? I agree that Dead Space was really scary; however there isn't a whole lot of replay value. I played resident evil from the very beginning. I know RE 5 is less scary. I never said RE 5 wasn't less scary than the others. I still feel coop isn't the problem. Obscure 1 and 2 are old survival horror games that are far scarier than RE 5. And both Obscure games actually had 2 player coop. At least this game will be a lot better than Operation Raccoon City. And the rest of my post is only irrelevant; because you don't agree with it.

Otaku313 5 pts

@vengefulwilberg "All of this complaining over Resident Evil being less scary needs to end. I agree with the need of more scares; but co-op isn't at fault for that. People need to stop blaming coop for lack of horror. Single player games are great; but don't last after you beat them. The co-op experience makes games a whole lot more fun and they last much longer. I like single player games; but I welcome change as long as the gameplay and story is good." 1.Yes, Resident Evil 5 was less of a horror game then even its predecessor. And IMO, the original Dead Space had alot more scares than even that. 2.CO-OP is one of many reasons RE5 was not scary 3.The rest of your post was irrelevant.

@Albaficas Or you could you could L2WRITE  Also you really should have learned how reply to someone by now (try putting @ before my name). No i am not going to tell you how old i am, what kind of fool do you take me for? And yes i did finish school, stop trying to score cheap points, its pathetic. Bedsides i hardly think age has anything to do with anything, your ignorance is the problem here. "ES5 was cleary a gears of wars copy" er, no it wasn't, they are completely different games, dont be so ridiculous. "i was talking from res5 and after so y it is a a gears of wars copy but with zombies...." well that makes little sense not only because of the the poor grammar, but seriously how is that an argument for anything? it is just a load of nonsense BS. *Sigh* fanboys are so stubborn and ignorant...there was very little reason for me to respond; it will only flow straight through your head anyway.

TTDog 31 pts

Here's hoping one of them thinks that maybe, just maybe, it'd be a good idea to let the player move and shoot at the same time.

GamerLegend10 such a nap u are...did u finish school btw? how old are u? L2READ....RES5 was cleary a gears of wars copy nothing will change with 6 save this post and u see. i was talking from res5 and after so y it is a a gears of wars copy but with zombies.... An yes capcom SUCKED this gen The only good game they made this entire generation was capcom vs marvel 3 and i hope street fighter x tekken the rest was trash and no sellers games.

"dramatic horror." -Now I'm nervous. I passed on RE5 because of a backlog of "action" games. Still, RE6 clearly borrows from RE2, so I will keep my hopes up.

vengefulwilberg 7 pts

OK people enough stealing the "BJ" line from the gamespot forums and grow up. Be original.

kkee 19 pts

So, RE6 will be a long, well structured game with excellent production values, bug free and no chance of a delay. I wonder how many copies Capcom will have to sell to make a profit?

DeadrisingX1 26 pts

You sure that's going to be enough developers for this game Capcom? ;)

AdventFFVII 5 pts

Make co-op optional or online only, keep single player as ONE player, make it difficult to find healing items and ammo, story that makes some kinda sense, a good final boss for once, no multiplayer, no senseless DLC (outfits, skins, etc) and no "Ultimate edition" released three to five months after, and I think it'll be a hit.......

666Rich666 53 pts

I don't like how they're putting action before the horror. I played Resident Evil games because they had creepy environments and stories. If I want a game where i have tons of ammo and non-stop action I wouldn't be playing a Resident Evil game. I really hope they bring the game back to its roots, seeing s how RE5 didn't even feel like a RE game.

OreoPoptart 6 pts

I guess I'll never finish this game if I get it 'cause the credits will never end

franzito 45 pts

RE is overdoing it or this is just veiled despair to revitalize the series after the wrong turn with RE 5. The 6 on the cover is just plain ugly and the trailer with old Leon and tons of action made me dizzy. Forget about good ol' RE: a whole action game seems to be coming up, even more intense than RE 4. But where's Claire, CAPCOM!?

charlieboomboom 5 pts

capcom traded adv for action....its dino crysis all over again

Nightelf123 6 pts

I just hope that it become like this trailer and don't change like RE5

Godyssey 11 pts

The 6 on the box is a giraffe getting a bj. Cant get it out of head.

Pete5506 16 pts

Capcom must have a ton of money to have 600 people work on this game

onixevil 7 pts

resident evil developers had makes the first TRUE "3D" game on console so you can mention any developers "copy of the game " except RE developers

GamerLegend10 52 pts

@Albaficas Not only are they different in almost every way, but are you seriously suggesting that RE (started in 1996) is copying gears of war (started in 2006 (a whole decade later)) ??? Don't be ridiculous. And no Capcom does not suck, you are just blinded by your compulsion to be a fanboy.

clqtte 5 pts

600 people mean 60 hours game play......

DanielL5583 8 pts

@Landsharkk Yeah...that was dumb of me. That was just the first thing that came into my head, for some reason. Maybe because I'm interested in history, WWII especially... But yeah; who knows how this is going to turn out. It's not always what you've got, but how you use it. With Kobayashi being a part of it, I have little fear in this falling flat on its face (that was brave of me to say that, since Capcom are losing a lot of steam).

NeoIostars 37 pts

with a dev team that size, there's no wonder they can push it in less than a year. And... *sniffs* ...are those day-0 DLCs I smell...?

Lhomity 26 pts

As long as they let me skip the credits at the end, so I don't have to sit through 15 minutes of the same dramatic theme music, I'll be happy.

endorbr 99 pts

If there are actually 600 people directly involved with making this game that really kind of worries me. That old adage about too many cooks in the kitchen comes to mind.

fgjnfgh 6 pts

What? Are your janitors involved too Capcom?

firzok 5 pts

@ryzocks you are spot on about the length of the game as Resident Evil 5 was quite short compared to Resident Evil 4. It took me 28 hours on my first playthrough in Resident Evil 4 while i finished Resident Evil 5 in about 9 hours on solo.

Oldboy08 21 pts

Sweet, I will def pick it up and play it with my gf, she is a huge RE fan. Played through RE5 with her help, yes, she is way better than I am at it. Cant wait to play through RE6 with her. :D!

[continue] Also recently Mikami had showed on its facebook page some video from the Resident Evil 3.5 build, and there were A LOTS of extremely good ideas that were left out for reason beyond my knowledge, but that add so much to the atmosphere and mood. That early 3.5 build almost put RE on par with the first 4 (and especially the first 2) Silent Hill game under a pure atmosphere and mood point of view... and that's was quite an achievement. As I said I hope they reconsidered most of those ideas for this next episode... I just can't wait to play it!

giocher 8 pts

Glad to see that they have brought back the survival horror part of the game. RE5 wasn't bad as an action game, not bad at all, but its biggest flaw was that it wasn't a survival horror anymore. And while that happened, games like Dead Space 1&2 demonstrate how you could make a third person (with almost the same command scheme too) action game and make it a survival horror at the same time. And they had too build a story from scratch too, while Resident Evil could count on a strong base storyline that needs just a few adjustments too eliminate the loophole in the script and has plenty of opportunity to create new stories, subplots, misteries and conspiracie without feeling old or recycled; although it has to be said that every horror fan is always looking for some recycled elements in the genre, just because they are part of it, and yet they want some new possibly revolutionary elements too add freshness to the genre... (feel quite weird to talk about freshness in a game that is mostly based on the rotten bodies corpses of zombies). I really hope that this new RE6 is going to be as great as it looks, and it seems a good idea to bring it together both the very good action parts of RE5 with Chris (after all chaos derived from horror goes well with action), and the even better horror part from RE4 (and the previous titles) with Leon (because real horror needs a slower pace even if it has a badass protagonist).

s4dn3s5 20 pts

I couldn't care less, hundreds of devs were on RE5 too. And it sucked. Craft a good game, than tell us about how expensive and hard it was to make it.

leeko_link 57 pts

600 developers? Two of those developers must have been Stan Lee and Sam Raimi of Spider-Man. You can tell the RE6 logo and closing in the trailer had a very Spider-Man style presentation.

June-GS 12 pts

Largest project ever, huh? If "large" project size can translate into "good" project quality, I guess we'll see.

WarioBro64 5 pts

@Vangaudius Hahaha, that's hilarious! I'll never be able to look at that logo the same way again!

Vangaurdius 6 pts

Uh, guys. Guys.... Capcom. Yo capco- CAPCOM! Just thought I'd let you know that your 6 looks like a woman giving a blowjob to a giraffe. Just thought I'd let you know.

godzillavskong 44 pts

I hope they're good developers. I don't think it really matters what the number of developers is, which I know they want to have a lot of people on it to give it all the attention it deserves, just keep it RE. I actually enjoyed the DLC for RE5 a bit more than the actual game. Going back to the mansion was awesome and this one looks to be going back to it's roots. My favorite will always be RECV on the Dreamcast though!

mohna16 5 pts

i like how they keep the same theme and style from old versions :)
