Shadow of the Colossus movie gets Hanna writer

making a movie on this terrible game? wtf?

A game with no dialogue, one boy, one horse, and twelve big things that wander around minding their own business sounds like perfect material for a movie.

 Maybe if they go the route of a silent movie something can be salvaged from the inevitable wreckage that will no doubt ensue (if you compare it to the game, of course, as it may be a perfectly good standalone movie).

I loved the game, but a movie from it? To me it doesn't go near what I would call a good idea, specially about this game, it doesn't even have a story (don't tell me that it was to save that woman, that's like a paragraph long), the great thing about that game was that it was a complete experience, there was no dialog or whatsoever, it was just you riding your horse fighting those monument-like creatures, the thoughts were left to you (not that I appreciate games without story, but this one is an exception). 

I would hope that the story gets a VERY EXTENSIVE fattening, 'cause this game pretty well suffices for cinematic storytelling and visuals in the actual gameplay...So you can guess whether I would prefer vegging in the theater or working my brain and motor skills in a game...Pretty much.

Yesss! That's what this game really need(movie). The game is not perfect because the lack of story telling. They should narrate back story each time we beat each boss. I know there's still room on the disc. Just like we don't get to know much about what happened in the original Dead Space until the animation version of it and Dead Space - Extraction(prequel of the game) surfaced.

i'm pessimistic about about game based movies, but this one i'm pretty sure they're going to screw up. the game isn't about good acting or engaging dialog, it had very little of that. how can they capture that in a movie without boring the audience to death?

all i can say is good luck to the movie producers, because this will be a hard one to make if they want it to be as epic as the game.

I could never find this game in my local game stores back in the day. Always wanted to play it and never got the chance.

Hanna was a great movie with a nice, streamlined script and strong writing overall. So at least it's got that going for it.

They should make action-figures instead.

i hate to keep harping on this, but no one should make this a film.  Shadow Of The Colossus is so beautiful because it is a game, and it's something you have to experience for yourself rather than watch.  i could go on for hours, but the biggest thing people don't understand, when tapping videogames for ideas, is that their very nature sets them apart from other media.  there is no way the Uncharted movie is going to come anywhere near the game.  we've seen that movie before, and it's fine; anything in Uncharted has already been touched on by some action movie somewhere, and the beauty of the game is that you actually do it.  you're doing it.  you're controlling that character and living vicariously, albeit frustratingly, through that character on screen.  

there is no sense of accomplishment in watching a movie like there is in finishing a videogame.  the adventure belonged to you alone because you did it, you won.  take that exhilaration away, and you are left with a  filmmaker's hollow interpretation of what they thought the game felt like, and the sheer brilliance of gaming is that everyone walks away with their own experience, and their own impression that that game left on them.  that's what i want, and that's why i play games.

Hanna script was okay.  The direction was bad.

I am so scared the are gonna have an Arnold Schwarzenegger like person belch out a one liner after each monster dies like, 

"the bigger they are the harder I climb", "you missed, I now hit you in your black smoke hole", "I'm the juggernaut, bitch"  With a steroid induced stroke Austrian like voice. 

The movie Hanna sucked very hard, and quite frankly all of the talent listed above who have been signed on to this "amazingly creative work of gaming art", well all of them are really not that good and come from no field related to SoC or ICO. 

Personally I would get that guy who did Pan's Labyrinth.  

This movie is taking an extreme gamble, because the only way it's going to work is by having very little dialogue.  I can't imagine it being any kind of action movie where it's pepper with corny one-liners.  Heh... watch the movie come out before The Last Guardian.

Hmm, wonder how this will turn out. Not gonna lie, it'd be quite boring watching 1 person kill 16 Giant creatures in the ways we already know it's supposed to be done. Let's cross our fingers!

One of my favourite games of all time ... I'm pretty certain they can only go wrong with adapting this.

The beauty of the game was partly in its ambiguity - the plot, the morality of killing the collosi and the dreamlike visuals. In fact the plot seems to start at what would be the middle of any other story; we don't know how the girl dies and we don't know how it is that he has that pimpin sword. 

Please - if you're reading this writer man - play the game first and don't deviate from what it was originally trying to do. I realise sequentially killing 16 giant monsters spread across an otherwise uninhabited and eerie land probably wouldn't work directly in movie form, but at least leave the overriding sense of ambiguity and contextual mystery intact.

What do you figure happens first, this movie is released or The Last Guardian is released?

I don't have high hopes for this, but I'll watch it as a fan of video games and movies. 

Please just follow what happens in the actual game. I got burned so hard by The Last Airbender.

I never saw Hanna but apparently it got pretty good reviews, especially for his first movie, and the same goes for Josh Trank. I'm not going to say that its for sure going to be good but considering most movie tie ins don't get good writers or directors it seems like this movie might have a shot.

Also, to people who complain about video game adaptations in general, I just want you to know you are full of shit. Yes, there has not been one single good video game movie (at least not a major one, I apparently the Professor Layton one was good) but there was a time where most comic book movies were TERRIBLE. With the exception of the first two Superman movies and the first two Batman movies from the 70s and 80s it wasn't until the last 15 years that we have gotten some genuinely good comic book movies. Yes, there were maybe one or two besides Batman and Superman that were pretty good but in comparison to what we have gotten since Spiderman in 2004 that is nothing. Yes, maybe there are some bad superhero movies (looking at you, Green Lantern) but Hollywood has done a fantastic job with finally understanding how to adapt the works of one medium (comic books) into another (movies). It will happen someday with video games, we just have to wait for someone to finally figure it out.

Considering movies nowadays actually make less money than games, and most movies based on games suck, why do they even bother?! Make. More. Games.

95% certain this will be garbage, as most video game to movies are.

Hanna was a waste of time -- the story was terrible.

If the previews don't look completely terrible, I'll check it out once its in Redbox or on Netflix.

The only way this movie would be remotely appealing to me - or, at least, not utterly offensive - would be if they went with a Tim Burton-esque stop-motion/animated style.  Making it live action is just a surefire way to ensure it'll be a colossal turd.

Also, it wouldn't hurt if they got a writer who'd done something that wasn't bland, lifeless and completely forgettable.  (And while I would prefer someone like Guillermo del Toro as director on this, Chronicle was so much better than it had any right to be - I'm really surprised how much I enjoyed it, given I f*cking hate the entire 'found footage' genre - so Trank earned himself some serious cred with me and I'm curious to see what else he can do.)

Most Sony Pictures productions are crap since 2008. I don't put high hopes for this.
