Latest issue of Game Informer magazine reveals official appellation for Konami's upcoming horror title; narrative details remain scant.
At Konami's 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo press briefing in June, the publisher premiered its latest Silent Hill game. At the time, it was given a working title of Silent Hill 8, but now Konami has gotten more specific.
According to the latest issue of GameStop-owned Game Informer magazine, Silent Hill 8 is now called Silent Hill: Downpour. The title--from Czech developer Vatra Games--is due out on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sometime in 2011.
Narrative details surrounding the title remain scant, but the title's debut trailer (embedded below) reveals some new information. Gamers will play as ex-inmate Murphy Pendleton, a man who suffers from lucid visions when he sleeps.
Further, Downpour will remain a third-person horror game in which players will be tested by puzzles, creatures, and various otherworldly beings. Additionally, as its name suggests, Silent Hill: Downpour will heavily feature the element of water.
Outside of a well-received remake of the original, the Silent Hill series has been dormant since 2008's Double Helix-developed Silent Hill: Homecoming.

Personally i prefer the Silent Hill 4, but this not kind of bad actually, not hating Homecoming but dunno Homecoming atmosphere really not too much horror if i do said so myself. When I see this trailer, a convict doing jailbreak and run to Silent Hill??? Bad choice mate...
Give it to team silent already... or re-brand the whole series to something else, or let it die, but having said that this actually looksquite good. anyone notice his prison suit turns into one of those orange day glow ones halfway through when it first shows the otherworld? probobly a prison metaphor of some kind, i heard the guy that did the graphic novels is doing this game now , and they were apparently quite good.
Calling Homecoming "ok" is being incredibly generous. It was one of the worst current gen titles I've played. Parts of the game seemed like they were not finished. The whole middle third of the game was way unbalanced, the animation during cutscenes looked like it was done in google sketchup, etc. I'm not too encouraged by this trailer either. Not much is shown but from what I see it looks like it's going to be a point A to point B game and they've totally done away with the exploration aspect of the series. We'll see . . .
It seems to have a atmosphere similar to SH 2. I hope it keeps the phsycological horror that made SH what it is now.
The last good Silent Hill was three. Two was the best. One was the godfather of psychological, claustrophobic, I-can't-see-what-the-F-is-in-front-of-me horror. They need to give the franchise back to the Japanese.
Let's hope the downpour will only consist of rain, and not some other, less pleasant, brownish substance.
Silent Hill Homecoming was ok but in my opinion wasn't as good as what 2 and 3 and even 1 on the PS were. I'm excited to see what this game develops into and am curious with the change from a foggy desolate town to a rain beaten scene as to what this does for suspense and horror aspect SH is famous for.
@MJ12-Conspiracy resident evil 1 i did not like so much i played it on the gamecube 2 and 3 are in my top 10 favourite games of all times you should play it i love the graphics of silent hill and the spooky atmosphere and all but this is what you call a thriller not a horror game right as you said it plays with your head and all honoustly i love the graphics and style but it dont scare me i rather play resident evil 2 and 3 style 4 was good also but taking away the zombies and the crazy sounds aaaaand most of the blood and innocent people being eatin alive this made me doubt about resident evil and let me play silent hill and alone in the dark i couldnd play silent hill honoustly! i was bored and i missed resident evil but i respect you silent hill fans for letting konami create so much titles and still kinda the same style i like the camera better now of resident evil but i hope they will bring back the style of 2 and 3
@acsam12304 I agree. I have too many games I have like 20 games sitting around. 5 XBLA and 15 360 and ps3 games. I go through my games as fast as I can. I rarley keep any games. halo series, uncahrted 2. killzone 2. I would keep other games longer and play them agian or more if there were not so many games to play.
game companies need to slow the way the F down when making games, now and days game companies are popping game after game left and right. they really need to stop slow down and take there time making a game. because a lot of games now are half @$$. after seeing the trailer hopefully it will be as good as it looks. but i wont be holding my breath
some of the comments below reflect how i was wondering about the silent hill series myself and to be honest, as long as it is not another waste of £40 like a lot of the poor sequels that i've had the misfortune of buying in the last few months, then i'll be happy! After all it is a good chain of games and stand much taller than most of the poor sh*te out there and yes i also include 'homecoming' as a good game too...
Trailer looks good, but any game can look good in a trailer. Hopefully it is better than Homecoming which was ok but nowhere near the quality of 1,2 & 3.

hmmm, doesn't look bad. liked the flashlight part. btw i replayed silent hill 3 last week and i remembered to love it back then but now it seemed kinda repetitive. is that just me? hmm hope they have some good ideas for this one. oh, another question: i wanted to buy the last silent hill (homecoming) like more than a year ago, but bought dead space instead (awesome!) cause everyone said homecoming sucked. should i buy it anyway now that it's 20 euros? or does it really suck that hard? cheers
Nostalgia , why there are no much great games like SIlent Hill 1 and Max Payne 1. hopefully this downpour will be as good.
tbh im growing tired of all these silent hill games, we could have had a new, promising and ORIGINAL ip with Harker, but no that gets shelved so the team can work on silent hill ¬¬

Wow. Doesnt look to bad. Hopefully it's nothing like Homecoming. That SH had it's moments, but ahhhh....I need to play shattered memories and origins. Heard those were actually getting SH back on track. This one looks good also.
@ResEv: Team Ninja did Metroid: Ohter M, not Ninja Theory. Hold off your judgements regarding DMC, Ninja Theory is great with story, animation and atmosphere. With Capcom financing the next game they should be able to overcome their one weakness: producing a glitchless game.
@KoolzKatz So, basically, you want the character to be just another cliche, psycho prison guy. A morally irredeemable character? If he were to somehow be morally redeemable by the end of the game, sure. Then again, the innocent prisoner is just as cliche, especially framed ones. Just saying that we have enough morally irredeemable characters in video games as it is. Either way, at least it's not yet another father looking for their lost daughter. =p
@RedWave247 I see it differently, i dont want it to be a situation where hes innocent or hes an ex-con but its not his fault as that an easy copout. It would be more interesting if the character was someone who was bad and who was responsible for something bad and that way you have morality coming into question.
makes some sense, I mean if they're in the 8th installment of the series it can be intimidating to want to play it if you've never played a Silent Hill game, like you've missed out on the backstory, renaming it Downpour helps... plus they've basically done the same thing with Homecoming, Shattered Memories, Origins, but The Room was still called Silent Hill 4: The Room, but that's kind of where they made the transition with the titles I think
ooowiieee, looking good! I'm finishing up Homecoming right now and I do not see what so many people dislike about it, (please no spoilers.) I am very much looking forward to this entry in the series. There seems to be a lack of truly great survival horror games out these days and Silent Hill always hits the frightening mark. I also LOVED the Silent Hill movie. I kind of wish they would do a second one based more directly off the second game. It is the best game to movie iteration out there in my opinion. I hope they keep up the good work.
