German magazine interview with Maxis' Lucy Bradshaw suggests fifth core installment in city-building franchise on the way next year with new game engine, multiplayer, nonlinear roads.
Gamers will have a new SimCity title to play from series creator Maxis in 2013, if a new report proves accurate.
German gaming magazine GameStar (via Spanish games site Rinconsimmer) spoke with Maxis developer Lucy Bradshaw, who confirmed SimCity 5 is in development at Maxis. She also noted that work on the Spore and Sims franchises kept the developer from revealing SimCity 5 sooner.
The magazine suggests that the new entry will run on an all-new game engine called Glassbox and will feature multiplayer support, updatable buildings, and nonlinear road patterns.
As of press time, EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter.
EA and Maxis are holding an event at the 2012 Game Developers Conference next week, with the companies calling it "huge." The event's website was recently updated with word that Academy Award-winner Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, Deadwood) and Charity Water founder and CEO Scott Harrison will speak during the proceedings.
Here's my wish list for the next Sim City: 1-Look like Cities XL 2-Play like Simcity 5 That's all, thank you.
I can't wait! Cities XL is starting to get dull (especially since the 2012 'version' is just 2011 with new packages that don't even work). Time for Sim City to reclaim it's place as king of the city sims. I just hope they don't turn it into an xpac monster a la Sims. Ugh.
Has anybody found the original article on the German website? I've looked for it cause I speak German but I can't find it...
Just don't sell the franchise to EA. They took the Sims from a great electronic toy and turned it into toilet fodder.
I just heard about this, and OH MY GOD if this really happens, Maxis/EA, just take my money now - I'm ready.
I am so amped for this game if it is true. I hope it won't be flop like its predecessor! It's the kinda game that I'm happy to invest a couple of hours in! It's a very cartoonish look, so it may not take itself too seriously!
SimCity 4 is the most epic of series and now SimCity 5 in 3D, I have high hopes that it will surpass SimCity 4, that first look means a lot how disaster like crash in road will affect others, what we do to prevent it is expend in socialization of safety driving or suggest shuttle bus or build more police station or do one way road, build subway etc, can't wait!
@Blackheart_RE Streets of SimCity 2 would be epic. I used to love playing that game and even importing my cities into the game. I'd also love to get my hands on a SimTower 2.
This is awesome! Can Maxis please go back and save The Sims 3? EA has killed all the fun out of that game...
And hopefully the driving part of the game will be a little more playable, if it's in there at all. Driving on shoulders is cool and all, but the pedestrians...oh the sim-manity! *squish*
About damn time. WOOHOO. :) Now, hopefully you can still play in offline mode. I can't do multiplayer because of crappy ping times. Not that I'd probably use multiplayer.
@CarlaBeat11 count me in on that :P I always watched other players cities which where awesome while mine where small and ugly :P
No, no, no.... SC5 was DUE by 2010. All SimCity fans know a true successor is at least that much overdue. This just reports it as being expected in 2013.
wow!!! I thought my grandchilderen would be the next generation to see a new simcity game... :D I hope they keep the good elements of simcity 4 and make the game awsome!!! P.S. Societies SUCKED!!!!
I loved Sim City on the Snes. I hated Sim City 2000 for the PS because it was so slow. Too bad that Will is no longer with Maxis.
At last!!!!!! I love these games! I wonder if Simcity 5 will support Dx11 and if it does.....I can't imagine how much beautiful it'll be!!!
Sim City has come so far! I remember being addicted to Sim City 2000 on the PlayStation. Was the ish!
Woo Hoo. Simcity 5. Please, Please keep to the simcity 4 formula. No dumbing down like societies. Any multiplayer is ok as long as it does not affect singleplayer.
@swmeek EA is a software publisher, not a developer. They don't make Sim City, Maxis does. Pretty lame attempt to just cry about EA again.
Oh joy another buggy EA game. maybe just maybe EA will pull their heads out of their hind ends and do something right for a change.
Guys the picture here is just artwork not an actual screenshot! Look here for more (if I can post this link here) http://www.simcitycentral.net/gallery/simcity-5/
OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDD!!! all hope was lost or so I thought. Now don't make it a sim city societies please, keep your eyes on how the earlier games were awesome. :O
Oh thank you! CitiesXL tried and failed with this game genre. SimCity is the superior city builder and we've needed a new one for a long time. Just please don't dumb it down or mess it up like CitiesXL (which even in the 2012 edition only runs on a single core of your processor)
Oh man baby cant wait..Bet there building it because they need some new update engine, for the sims series lol..They use the simcity series for backdrops in the sims..Hopefully its not sim societies man that game stunk to high heaven..Bring on simcity 5 day one purchase for me..Hopefully like some of yall said..Id like to see more rpg elements in the game..Some more micromanagement as some one else stated..Im just happy this is finally coming to the community..Its been a long time since we had a true successor to the franchise..
So EA is the publisher on this ? My crystal ball tells me there'll be first day DLCs that cut out important features of the game to be sold separately, shop specific preorder bonuses to further split the game up, EA's draconian Origin DRM, forced online mode (justified with a "social features" excuse) and if rumors are right that it's also developed for consoles then this will be another franchise destroyed. Yay, what's the next franchise EA will run into the ground I wonder ? I'd rather send out another donation to the OpenTTD developers or throw it at Paradox (in the hopes that they create a DRM free SimCity like game in the Cities in Motion engine) before giving a single cent to EA.
