Skyrim soars past Battlefield 3 on XBL activity
The latest entry in The Elder Scrolls franchise only bested by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops in most recent Xbox Live stats.
Earlier this week, EA offered an update on Battlefield 3's sales figures, saying the multiplayer-centric first-person shooter has now sold some 8 million units. But despite those lofty figures, the game hasn't been able to keep up with Bethesda Softworks' latest role-playing game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Xbox Live.
As revealed by Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb via his blog, Skyrim was the third most-played game by Xbox 360 users connected to Xbox Live for the week of November 21. Bethesda's latest RPG fell in just behind Activision's Call of Duty stalwarts Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops. Battlefield 3 logged a fourth-place performance.
Skyrim's success has not been limited to the console space. In November, Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media boasted that the game had set a new Steam record with more than 280,000 concurrent players logged in on Skyrim's launch day.
Skyrim recently received a 1.2 patch that was set to fix various issues experienced by players on all platforms. Notable problems included progressive game saves causing frame-rate issues on the PlayStation 3 version of the game and a reduction in texture resolution when installed to the hard drive on the Xbox 360. Response to the patch has been mixed, with players reporting continued problems and new issues including backward-flying dragons.

The only reason why people were even "online" while playing Skyrim was to download the MUCH NEEDED patches. Great game though. RON PAUL 2012 FREE SKYRIM
***voice of the Dos Equis guy**** I don't die very often when I play Skyrim....but when I do, I saved 15 seconds ago....stay paranoid my friends.
Everyone here is giving props to Skyrim, and rightly so !....but if you like this type of game you have to check out Dark Souls.....its a different style of fantasy, but I think it is just about as fun as skyrim, and its huge too.
A game is a game, its like saying chess isnt a board game but checkers are. its good to see a truly creative traditional fantasy do so well in this saturated FPS market, its the same way I felt about the success of the latest deus ex game. Its good to see interesting and unique gameplay getting some attention over the (in my opinion) worn out military FPS genre. There are a bunch of great titles out right now that are not COD or Battlefield, we as gamers should explore them all.
am I the only one who thinks it's wrong to compare a RPG game to a FPS game? they're too different, still I like RPG better, campain last for dozens of hours (and if you want to get all items, hundreds of hours probably) of fun.
if ur followers could be controlled by friends via xboxlive, no one would play anything else
if only skyrim could now beat black ops and mw3 and be the most played game on xbl
Imagine what the next Elder Scrolls game will be like on the next generation of consoles.Awesomeness!
@Grimkillah wtf are you talking about...
Serve EA right for putting f'ing MP on every SP game (ME3, Dead Space 3, rumored DA3).
playing on xbox, gotta say im glad for the patch to textures when running from hardrive, this game just seems prettier now :) although i have come across backard flying dragons XD
What's ironic is I just remembered reading an article when Oblivion came out saying single-player games were about to die off and Oblivion would be the last major SP game released for consoles. The numbers don't lie. Singeplayer games are here to stay.
Skyrim is easily the best game of this generation, alongside with the original Bioshock.
I like black ops better then MW3 and BF3 kills them both.
Go skyrim!
How is Black Ops still in the top? I tried giving that game a fair try but after getting max lvl once I sold it, the only people that like that game I notice usually havent played MW, WaW or MW2, its for kids and it sucks IMO I am shocked its still being played at all let alone this much. I have lost faith in gamers.
@botsio Morrowwind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are all Elderscrolls and all First Person
player play skyrim more than any game that was release this year. ^_^
the more player on COD and not on BF3 mean less idiots playing BF3 and that can only be good and skyrim is a super game even with the flying backward dragons LOL (please patch)
Skyrim - Best overall game I've played. BF3 - Best Multiplayer. Simple as that.
wow!skyrim the elder scrolls i've never seen gothic games go first person.it is third person as usual.skyrim breaches this.i'm impressed.
@dangermouse2k, good job the Xbox doesn't have an internet explorer if you know what I mean
@tizmond I couldn't of said it any better!

Don't you love how our activities are always being tracked?
@mad_krips I feel your pain buddy. The difference being I own the game and have 160 hours logged on... but I'm like a crack addict. I need some serious rehab time, this game is stealing my soul! The sad part is... even if I manage to cure myself, I'll just end up coming back, why? Three letters, D... L... C... My life is truly dead XP At least you have yours, save it!
This doesn't prove anything except that The Elder Scrolls series is very popular.(As Bethesda's reputation increases with ES and Fallout franchises) Probably the only single-player game on the top 10 for XBL. It's my favorite game this year, but would be better with the ability to play with other real people, like maybe a Minecraft-type thing. Multiplayer is the future, sorry non-competitive nerds. "Online shooters are very 1993"?? WTF? LMAO. Most people wouldn't even know you could play computer and video games online in 1993. Could you even do that back then?
WTH Newegg, I had plans tonight to play Skyrim. Not in mail, not happy
Activision should make their on console and put all their games on it only, and that would be great,i mean im sure they could wtf have they done with all that maney, i mean they have the elite service, why not a console com on activision you know you want to, come on, and put ALL your piece of shiit games on it and make them exclusive to it, im sure all your "fans" will support you.
More games like this please.
Not surprised by this, given that the Skyrim midnight launch at my local Gamestation was mobbed. Even busier than the Gears 3 launch. To me, this is conclusive proof that people are crying out for decent SINGLE player games. Hopefully other devs will take note and rid us of the usual half-assed online shooters that get churned out & recycled every year. Online shooters are very 1993. We've moved on people. There's a reason that the term "First Person Shooter" originally started as "Doom Clone".
I'm not surprised that people still play Black Ops...just the amount. Wow
Skyrim's in-game dedication is as high as any limitless FPS Multiplayer, Let's just say It isn't as popular to play this type of games worldwide as it is to play War-Based shooters Like CoD and BF. No Offense to the WOW gamers but sales speak for themselves.
@weedman1985 Totally agree with you. 9 out of the 10 games I bought in my entire life were because of the single player. Make more single player games
Skyrim ftw!
Skyrim soars past MW3 on PC/Steam.
So much for all the failures who claimed that Single player games do not sell. Yes, I'm looking at you EA and Activision.
@iRaphas13 No. They just counted how many people were playing....
Wait, Skyrim has multiplayer?
yea skyrim and bf3 allllll the wayyyyyyy!!
@bodamer That's the exact reason I didn't buy the game. Sure I could have got it for Xbox, but I'm not funding their crap any more. They screwed me over with Spore and now they aren't getting any more of my money.
The people at Bethesda softworks don't make video games they make digital art;may they only get better at what they do
@anthonycg, Not forgetting 'Depth' and 'Immersion' : )
2012 Candidate: Nord, Red Guard, Dark Elf.. Choose! Choose!
its said because both of those call of duty games were thrown together in less than a year but skyrim took about 4...cod fans=consumer whores.
Battlefield fans are always in Call of Duty pages, while Call of Duty and Elder Scrolls fans just play their games and are having fun.
Something about a game with a plot I guess...
@firehawk998 Couldn't agree more.
@mad_krips: My god man, learn some self discipline and your wife/mom wouldn't have to govern you so harshly..
its unbelievable that there are still idiots playing MW3 while this game is 100000000 times better
