I miss the days when games were supposed to be fun and it wasn't REALLY about money; it was about making badass fun games. You didn't expect anything BUT a good time. Whether it had multiplayer or not was never the issue. Oh how the times have changed.
Activision start-up studio's job listings reveal outfit tapped to bring series into the action adventure genre is working on a first-person shooter for the franchise.
When Activision first revealed that Sledgehammer Games was working on a Call of Duty title, it specifically said the game "will extend the franchise into the action adventure genre." Whatever tweaks the developer makes to the gameplay formula, the end result will apparently still fall under the series' standard first-person shooter description.
A number of job postings on Sledgehammer's official Web site state in no uncertain terms, "We are actively recruiting top talent for our Call of Duty First Person Shooter development team." However, not all the available positions include that phrasing; a post for a senior sound designer lists the team as making "an action title in the Call of Duty franchise."
Whether the first-person shooter is the same game or a separate project from the previously confirmed action adventure is unknown. As of press time, an Activision representative had not returned a request for clarification.
After firing the cofounders of original Call of Duty studio Infinity Ward, Activision put its plans for the series into overdrive, setting up a dedicated Call of Duty business division. The publisher's slate already includes November's Call of Duty: Black Ops from Treyarch, a new Call of Duty from Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer's action adventure, and a Call of Duty massively multiplayer online game. Activision has also trademarked a number of potential Call of Duty titles, and rumors have surfaced about Raven Software working on the franchise.
@FatalAffinity Hope not,Infinity Ward have become a joke. They offer little in the way of support and don't listen to the community: MW2 on PC proved that as did the Wii port Treyarch ended up doing because IW couldn't be bothered.Call Of Duty should remain with Treyarch, they do offer support and are interested in balancing their games out. A beta was a waste of money from a business perspective because Modern Warfare 2 was going to sell big regardless of what state it was in;and it did.Activision are pumping out game after game because it's big profit every time.People forget that Activision are essentially running a business and if they can make easy money somewhere they will. Alot of people blame Activision for how Infinity Wards games turn out but IW never really listened to Activision anyway. If they did,CoD 4 wouldn't of been set in the modern era. Most gameplay faults are also largely at IWs hands, they developped the engine. Alot of people will say Call Of Duty 4 was the best in the franchise but that's only because of the period it was set in.Although Call Of Duty was popular it wasn't anywhere near as popular as it is today and that's thanks to Call Of Duty 4 not being set in World War 2. Both World at war and Black Ops are more complete games then the IW predecessor.Treyarch are doing a better job.
I really hope that Respawn Entertainment wins the lawsuit and claim rights to the Call of Duty and Modern Warfare franchises. Activision has been forcing out a game every year without properly going through the phases. MW2 didn't get a Beta because Activision supposedly claimed it was a waste of money. TreyArch has been leeching off of the franchise as much as Activision, and in my opinion, has been releasing the same game, a year after IW, if only with a different setting. If Infinity Ward was the only company allowed to make the CoD games in the past, the franchise would not have been milked so badly. IW would have been able to work at their own pace to make sure the game is perfect, but Activision seems to not care about product quality in any way, they only think of making a quick buck. PLEASE OH PLEASE Let Respawn win the Rights!!
I was hoping they would go the other way. Greek and Roman battles or Middle-age Knights or Cowboys and Native Americans. Give me a musket, bow and arrow, or a sling shot! Man the catapult! Then introduce some crossover multi-player games: Cowboys vs future soldiers. I'm only half kidding. I'm not sure they could profit from a full game in those settings, but it would make for some cool downloadable content. Stretch out the release of main titles and give them a better polish, and keep us entertained with some lighter fair in the interim.
I personally hope the Call Of Duty series and Respawn wash out ;they've made their millions making unfinished games with poor servers and glitches left, right and centre.
@ jaredhurlbert Activision are going places;the 2 creators have done there bit in creating the concept. All they were doing from there on were increasing payouts. They fired them because they no longer need them, the CoD name in itself is cemented to almost always be a success.Fanboys will buy anything with Call Of Duty branding no matter how bad or good it is;it will always sell. Infinity Ward started CoD but Treyarch are doing a much better job at advancing the series and bringing new ideas.Either way though, the series is over-milked.
Activision you guys are the worst. You guys fire the 2 people that made you guys rich and now you use Call of Duty like you truley made it.I hope Respawn and EA Screw you guys over.
Personally i don't want anymore COD because they're obviously just pilling up and it will just turn into another Guitar hero. But don't bash the new guys yet, they MIGHT actually come out with something good just don't get your hopes up/down until a review comes out.
activi$on is a big cash sucker with poor plans for such a cool series thats we used to play since the first call of duty from iw the cod logo now is nothing but a body with no soul in it becuse the peoples who crated it are no longer with it so thanks for ruining call of duty activi$on i hope the new iw devlopers studeo came with epic games with the help of ea.
@Reiken37 Business:A usually commercial or mercantile activity engaged in as a means of livelihood (From Merriam-Webster) No where does it say "Keep your customers happy". Are gas stations or supermarkets supposed make you happy? No, they make it so you can go to work and eat food, while they make money in order to pay bills. Its called capitalism. You're welcome to join it.
whatever Sledgehammer come out with, i hope Glen can maintain the same quality with his previous work, Dead Space.
I must say that I'm done with the Call of Duty franchise. It's like the sports games and the Guitar Hero franchise. Tired of buying a new version every year. Give me something completely new and I might be interested.
LOL... Activision is burning money again. MMORPG = PC = Fail. I don't think Activision realizes just how pissed off PC gamers are that they wasted 60 bucks on a piece of crap that is nonfunctional online now and has a 4 hour campaign.
I for one would love a CoD tactical shooter in 3rd person. Just not as tactical as that one series by Pandemic where you only place troops. Hammer something? I think.
@Chickan_117 Yeah, I know. I get carried away sometimes. Lolz. Can't help it if some butthurt fanboy starts calling me inferior and inadequate and what not. Clearly his parents don't give him enough attention, so he has to come and start using big words to make himself feel better. But hey, I gave him the attention he needs.I'm done with the dude anyways. If he reported me like I encouraged him to, won't be long before I get banned. :)
By all means people, be angry at the suits. But give the new team a chance, they're no different than us.
Why must we suffer more CoD games, when will people realise that they're not actually very good games? Bad Company 2 and to a certain extent Red Dead Redemption have both proven that there are more challenging and fun competitive online games than CoD.
Personally I'm not sure what to make of this. I'm receiving all this talk of expanding COD into new genres with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. I think it's time they stopped making the same game and tried something new however, if it's done poorly, the COD name will be irrevocably damaged. At least it's Activision who, for their faults, do have the funding and will spend it to milk a franchise. This can either kill or save a series. @GBPackersrule - Lol, reading the comments I wonder if you've heard the term "don't feed the trolls" :)
its time we get our government to work for us for a change. we need them to pass a constitutional amendment to not allow a series to go past 3 games.
@DarthTall Oh and by the way DarthTall, my skill is perfectly fine. Not MLG status, but I ain't no scrub either. So I am certainly not "inadequate" or "inferior". (Yes I know I don't have to play it, but when I do the experience is broken) Maybe its the fact that game gives you camper items like a heartbeat sensor, or killstreaks that encourage you to rack up kills by sitting next to a doorway than actually going to your target. So please, So enough with the big words. If your trying to come off as smart, you're not doing a very good job.So enough with the big words, you're not fooling anyone. So I'll go "stew in my misery" (you know, the misery that bought my truck, my crib, etc.) while you sit behind your monitor and bring a knife to a gun fight. I know you're 40 and a growing boy, but try not to let your hormones drive your emotions. You may come off as rude.
@PeguinIzzy I've been on board since 2008. I got nothing against COD, they are just bleeding the franchise dry. Not worth paying $60 every year for essentially a copy and paste.
@DarthTall I don't need your pity, I get by perfectly fine without it. So don't "feel sorry" for me. The only people I feel sorry for are people who report users "for clear insults of others" because they can't handle the truth. Then again, I don't really care. If you insulting the Packers (who I hate by the way, my name is a contradiction) made you think you would get under my skin, you failed at that as well. Of course, you're going to report me again, but I am just about through with this website anyways. Getting me another suspension will just be water under the bridge. And by the way, I don't hate people who disagree with me. I hate people who are so blinded by their ignorance (you defending COD like its your child) they can't grasp the concept that the game isn't the messiah. I don't care if you like COD. If that is your cup of tea, more power to you. don't post comments praising COD, then not expect people to disagree with you. Report me again, see if I care. Out.
One word: Boycott. The FPS genre is already saturated, and unless the next CoDs do something groundbreaking, they would be all too easy to boycott and ignore. I am a fan of Treyarch, but unless Black Ops has zombies, there is nothing compelling about their new release. Crossbows? Puh-lease. Sometimes, it's more important to show brand loyalty/enmity than anything else. I will be boycotting all future Activision/CoD games and opting inside for EA/Respawn based solely on principle since I believe nothing in the CoD lineup will be that much better than what Respawn will ultimately come up with. Anyone else on board?
The CoD title will remain for quite some time...after all, brand name sells, and the CoD universe is very well fleashed out.
This is getting crazy. How many CoDs does Activision want? Just make up a new IP and stop calling everything Call of Duty!
I just don't see why they feel the need to release all of these games under the Call of Duty moniker. I mean, if the whole point is that Sledgehammer's game was going to be a different genre, and the MMO game is, you know, an MMO, why do they all need to be Call of Duty? With this many titles under the same branding, you're losing buzz and business for exactly the reasons you can see below...
This is getting a little ridiculous, and this is going to be different than any other CoD? NOPE. Quantity over Quality with these people.
Bobby Kotick thinks video games are like toothpaste...if he can come out with a new flavor every six months he figures that will keep bringing in the cash. Not sure why he hasn't figured out from the other IP's he's destroyed that this business doesn't work like that. Guess he's a slow learner.
Now begins the fueling of the CoD overrated rocket, so that it will soon blast off to heights as great as, perhaps even more than, the highest of them all, Gaylo. Get e-angry, RQ this page and go jump 80 feet in the air with your sUpEr BlaSteR. Because it's true.
As much as I think the CoD games aren't anything special, they're certainly not bad games. You'll be pretty much guaranteed that the game won't suck. It won't be great, but it will certainly be better than most.
i was thinking today they milked call of duy dry call of duty 5 was ok but modern warfare 2 stuffed it up big time if it was a bit more diffrent they could of kept milking it for 6 years but ever since they fired the 2 creators of infinity you can just tell that call of duty is a failing series kind of like how standoff ok for a while but then it got a bit repetive
I've never quite gotten what the hype was about. Call of Duty 4 singleplayer was kinda fun, but not that great, and the multiplayer got boring real fast, as it was mostly rush and kill. Modern Warfare 2's singleplayer was even worse : respawning enemies and the action was waaaay scripted. Ofcourse for whatever reason, people keep buying the games and they keep getting good reviews and as long as they do, the more they are milking the CoD franchise just by adding a few weapons and a few features in the next game. This has gone far enough.
