20th-anniversary premium edition of Sega's upcoming mascot platformer packed in with a cross-generational Sonic statue, gold ring, art book, soundtrack, documentary, and more.
Last month, retailer listings suggested that Sonic Generations would be receiving a special edition exclusive to Europe with an extra stage and other digital goodies. Although that package has since showed up on North American retailer sites as a preorder bonus, today Sega announced that there will be a second premium edition that's definitely exclusive to Europe.
In addition to the game, the Sonic Generations Collectors Edition will feature a 20th anniversary statue with both modern and vintage versions of Sonic, as well as an individually numbered prop gold ring. Rounding out the package are an art book and soundtrack covering the mascot's two-decade run, a documentary titled "History of Sonic: Birth of an Icon," and an assortment of downloadable content. Sega has not said how much the premium edition will cost gamers.
Sonic Generations will touch upon three different eras of the Sega mascot: the classic 2D Genesis days, the move to 3D with the Dreamcast, and then today's modern HD graphics phase. Sega has rebuilt a number of levels from games gone by for Sonic Generations, and players will be able to speed through these stages in 2D and 3D perspectives. Sonic's abilities will also depend on the incarnation that players choose, as the spin dash and spin attacks will be open to Sonic 2D, while his 3D persona will be able to use the homing attack and sonic boost abilities.
Though the stages will be reimaginings of classic levels, Sonic Generations will feature a new storyline. In it, a "mysterious new power" opens up rips in space time, which pull Sonic and his crew back in time, where he battles new challenges alongside his former self.
Sonic Generations is set for a November release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with a Nintendo 3DS edition planned but with an unannounced release window. For more on Sega's latest, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Sonic Generations..
@Super-Poke-Bros Yeah, I mean Sega. I was thinking of Assassin's Creed for some reason when I posted it. My bad :)
@XeonForce "This is why console region-locks suck." What are you talking about? PS3 is region free. If you only have 360, then shame on you. I have both btw.
Dayumn... that looks like a pretty slick special edition package. No North American release is a stupid decision though...
****! im from north america and this is "exclusive" to europe! agg how i hate this kind of things! ***** man!
NOOOOO I WANT THAT!!!!! AHHH RELEASE IT IN NORTH AMERICA I DONT CARE HOW MUCH IT COSTS I MUST HAVE IT!!!
This Collector's Edition looks sweet, I hope SEGA brings it to other regions so more fans can get it (including myself) :P
Normally I wouldn't care because I don't buy Collector's Editions...but this is the ONLY Collector's Edition I want and now I probably won't be able to get it. Hopefully I can import it some way.
For all the North Americans that are complaining: we usually get awesome pre-order stuff while the rest of the world is left out, let them have a turn, yeah?
when is sega bringing back old sonic!!! (not that crappy sonic the hedgehog 4 episode I, which was very short and a copy of sonic 1, 2 and 3) i mean, a true sequel to sonic the hedgehog 3!!!
Dammit. I already preorded it and all im gonna get is a casino night minigame, MINIGAME. and europe gets all this? bullcrap.
That's definitely really cool. But I'm more concerned if they fixed the game since the demo showed problems. And all 3d Sonic games so far have been huge disappointments. Sonics legacy has been tarnished thanks to terrible games and weeaboos. Sonic Sez: He used to be cool.
Why can't we have nice collector's editions like that here in North America instead of bland and underwhelming promises of minuscule DLC as the only preorder bonuses?
won't do any good if the game is as crappy as Sonic Unleashed..... What about this: "Sonic Generations confirmed to have a revamped engine of Sonic CD" now that's some kick'n awesome news! changing 2d to 3d stages...what a laugh,.. fans don't need that, they need good old sonic: 2d platformer at highest speed with adrenaline battles and puzzles
Why are they putting a story in this? I suppose they have to, but really, what was ever so wrong with "Robotnik is trying to rule the world by turning cute little animals into mean robots, sonic has to go save the animals and stop Robotnik's growing army." That set up the levels nicely, and got us right to the speedy action! At the very least, I hope the story in "Generations" is very, very light.
